Jonathan Brookins credits loss to Erik Koch with change in attitude

It may sound funny to outsiders but to truly excel in Mixed Martial Arts an individual has to be somewhat of a masochist, enjoying the blood, sweat, and tears turned in daily while training to become the best fighter possible. When the process feels more like work than pleasure it typically shows in an athlete’s performance, a fact TUF 12 winner Jonathan Brookins can attest to. When he meets Charles Oliveira inside the Octagon he’ll do with the same mentality leading to his opening round knockout of Vagner Rocha in February, though one he didn’t obtain easily as you might expect. “I feel like losing to (Erik) Koch taught that I need to fight,” admitted Brookins of his 2011 stumble to the Roufusport product in an interview with Fightline. “Before that I think I thought I could just get away with coasting in there and just holding somebody down. I wasn’t in a good place mentally before that fight, but that was a great wake up call!” Now, with a new mindset, Brookins feels unstoppable and plans to prove it on June 1 when he takes on “Do Bronx”. “If I am not enjoying training and I am not giving it my all, then everything is meaningless,” said Brookins, also adding he had made some changes in his personal life where his camp was concerned and loving his chosen professional endeavor more than ever as a result. As good as Oliveira may be, it also appears Brookins is not necessarily worried about anything he offers. However, rather than his indifference being a matter of disrespect, it’s actually quite the opposite as the 26-year old is simply is too thrilled with challenging himself against someone like “Do Bronx” to fret about anything else. “No concerns about Oliveira, just excitement because I think he is one heck of a fighter,” Brookins exclaimed on his upcoming opponent. Brookins holds an overall record of 13-4 with a 2-1 record under the UFC banner. Eleven of his wins have involved some form of finish including eight by way of submission. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC

UFC featherweight Charles Oliveira gets June bout with Jonathan Brookins

This summer Brazilian phenom Charles Oliveira will look to go 2-0 as a featherweight against a fellow rising star at 145 pounds in the form of TUF 12 winner Jonathan Brookins. The two twenty-somethings are set to meet on the main card at the Ultimate Fighter 15 Finale, an event headlined by a battle for #1 contendership between Jake Ellenberger-Martin Kampmann. The UFC confirmed Oliveira vs. Brookins earlier today along with preliminary pairings between John Albert-Byron Bloodworth and Pat Schilling-Max Holloway. “Do Bronx” Vows to Keep on Improving Oliveira made his featherweight debut in memorable fashion a few months ago with a Calf-Slicer submission of Eric Wisely. The seldom seen technique resulted in the eighth tap-out of the 15-2 fighter’s career with six TKOs to his credit as well. Comparably, Brookins is 13-4 with eleven stoppages, meaning fans are almost certainly in for some form of finish come showtime on June 1. Like Oliveira, Brookins is also coming off an opening round win, notching a TKO against Vagner Rocha in February. PHOTO CREDIT – DETHRONE Tweet

Vagner Rocha released by the UFC

It looks like Vagner Rocha’s knockout loss to Jonathan Brookins earlier this month at UFC on Fuel 1 was enough to convince the UFC’s brass the 7-3 lightweight was no longer an asset to the organization, cutting him from the roster as a result. The defeat dropped his record inside the Octagon to 1-2, though in fairness to Rocha he made his debut against Donald Cerrone on short notice and went the distance. Rocha’s release was first reported by TATAME where he said his next move will be to rest for a bit after an extended training period due to a previous bout being cancelled prior to him facing Brookins. The BJJ blackbelt started his career off with five straight wins having since alternated between success/defeat in each of his subsequent outings. His lone UFC win came against Cody McKenzie who he submitted in the second round of their rumble with a Rear-Naked Choke. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC

UFC On Fuel TV Results: Jonathan Brookins Knocks Out Vagner Rocha

Former Ultimate Fighter winner Jonathan Brookins managed to continue his impressive UFC career by knocking out Vagner Rocha in the first round of their UFC on Fuel TV bout. Rocha looked very capable of winning the fight in the stand-up early landing good left hands and looking a bit quicker to pull the trigger and avoid danger than Brookins. It was when Vagner attempted to get a takedown that the fight turned. Rocha tried to get the body clinch and take the fight to the ground but Brookins reversed, ended up on top and quickly unloaded with a series of shots that knocked Rocha out. It was a violent ending that improved Brookins to 2-1 in his official UFC bouts, with the lone loss coming to a title contender in Erik Koch. It will be interesting to see how the UFC wants to handle Brookins going forward. SBN coverage of UFC on Fuel TV

UFC on FUEL Results: Jonathan Brookins Knocks Out Vagner Rocha

Jonathan Brookins earned his first victory since winning The Ultimate Fighter on Wednesday night's UFC on FUEL card, unloading on Vagner Rocha with several hard right hands on the ground and knocking him out in the first round. For Brookins, who lost to Erik Koch in September, it was a big win that gets his career back on track, and he said afterward that he was delighted to beat a well-regarded opponent like Rocha. "Vagner is super tough," Brookins said. "So I'm really thankful. ... That's just the way it goes sometimes. It could have been either one of us right there." It didn't take Brookins long to get on top of Rocha on the ground and knock him out with vicious ground and pound, but Brookins said he isn't going to take any time to celebrate because he's going to get right back to work. "I'm thrilled, but it's back to the drawing board for me," Brookins said. "I've got to grow and grow and grow. I'm just thrilled to be growing in this organization."
