The UFC’s ambitious all-heavyweight PPV card is a little over a week away from unfolding in Las Vegas and the ride has been a smooth one since things initially hit a speedbump with Alistair Overeem’s suspension for an elevated T:E ratio.
Now, with the match-ups all firmly planted in place, as part of the final build towards the May 26 show a quartet of competitors attached to UFC 146 will be sitting down with media to participate in a conference call promoting the event. Joining the festivities will be champion Junior dos Santos, top contender Frank Mir, former title-holder Cain Velasquez, and newly-signed Strikeforce scrapper Antonio Silva.
The call starts at 1:00 PM EST and, as usual, Five Ounces of Pain will be tuned in to relay highlights back to readers as they occur on the line.

After the success of TUF Brasil the UFC will continue the international expansion of the Ultimate Fighter brand with a stop down under for an upcoming season pitting Australia against the United Kingdom. Nicknamed “The Smashes”, the show will start taping later this year and is currently in the process of screening talent.
No coaches have been named at this point though it’s likely each will hail from his team’s respective region. Weight-classes are also up in the air at this point though the UFC’s casting call states the company is looking for fighters between 135-170 pounds.
“Australia and the UK have a fierce, long-standing rivalry, and where better to settle the score than in the UFC’s Octagon,” said UFC’s Managing Director of International Development Marshall Zelaznik. “The popularity of MMA has exploded in Australia and the UK, with gyms opening all over the respective countries. There is an athlete in one of those gyms who hasn’t had the chance to show the world what he can do – The Ultimate Fighter is going give to him that opportunity. We’re going to discover the UFC’s future stars, you can bet on it.”
Notable competitors on the UFC’s roster from Australia include Kyle Noke and George Sotiropoulos while a number of British Mixed Martial Artists also call the promotion home such as Brad Pickett, Dan Hardy, and Michael Bisping.

The UFC’s next stop on FOX grew this week when the organization announced a pair of heavyweight fights attached to the August 4 event. Most notably, Matt Mitrione will battle Rob Broughton in hopes of shaking off any lingering funk from his October loss to Cheick Kongo.
In the other bout, Philip De Fries (8-1) will face off against Oli Thompson (9-3).
Mitrione’s decision defeat to Kongo was the first stumble of his career, winning five straight scraps to open up his MMA career after joining the Ultimate Fighter 10 cast with zero bouts under his belt. Four of his victories have involved some form of strike-based stoppage including those against Kimbo Slice, Tim Hague, and Christian Morecraft.
Broughton has also struggled as of late, dropping his last two tilts after earning a win in his Octagon debut. The 29-year old Brit is 15-7 in his career with twelve finishes.
UFC on FOX 4 is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles with a middleweight match-up between Brian Stann-Hector Lombard headlining in addition to other featured bouts on FOX such as Joe Lauzon-Terry Etim, Ben Rothwell-Travis Browne, and Lyoto Machida-Ryan Bader.

In promotion of the UFC’s third appearance on Fox, Zuffa fighters rang the NASDAQ bell earlier this week in New York’s Times Square. Jon Jones, Frankie Edgar and Strikeforce’s Ronda Rousey were on hand as well as UFC on Fox anchor Curt Menefee.

This has been the only real mainstream promotion for today’s card (if I’m missing something, please let me know in the comments) on the network. And, it wasn’t even the New York Stock Exchange. Nevertheless, a good photo op and another subtle hint that New York should have MMA. It’s interesting that Rousey is getting a push from Zuffa as she recently was on TUF Live and testified against against AB 2100 in California.

The UFC’s third offering on cable network FX will feature an anticipated rematch between top flyweights Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall, promotion officials announced Tuesday.
The UFC’s historic 2012 continued last Friday night when the organization unveiled the latest season of TUF, bringing the popular reality show to a new network along with a new format. While the show drew mild criticism from fans expecting a more-polished product, Dana White was thrilled with how things went off considering the number of potential problems with a live show let alone one without past production to learn from.
“Going into this thing … you’re always nervous when you do something new and do something different. We worked long and hard on this show to make sure this came off with no hitches,” said White to MMAJunkie, adding, “I’m very happy to with how it came off. It was perfect. Everything went according to plan. There were literally no hiccups whatsoever.”
“It’s not easy doing this live. Nobody’s even done this before, and it could have gone any more perfect,” he concluded.
Though there may have been a few minor issues, including a curse word or two making air as well as some questionable decisions created by the single-round set-up, for the most part the TUF 15 debut was well-received based partially on half of the bouts ending in some form of a finish.
“We’ve got a lot of guys who are very good, guys who are strong finishers,” the pleased UFC President stated. “I love that. I love guys with killer instincts.”
TUF 15 is back this Friday night with another live fight between two of the sixteen men who made it into the house as well as highlights from the past week including coaches Urijah Faber-Dominick Cruz selecting their teams.

The UFC's lightweight division is more crowded with talent than ever before, which should make 2012 quite an interesting year to sort things out at the top.
A tabulation error at UFC on FX 2 has caused a massive miscue in the UFC’s ongoing flyweight tournament and placed a controversial bookend on the promotion’s third trip to Australia.
This Saturday, February 25, the UFC will head to Japan to present UFC 144. In the evening’s main event Frankie Edgar will defend his UFC Lightweight title against former WEC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson.
While the UFC’s Lightweight division may not be one of the “glamour” weightclasses, it is without a doubt one of, if not the, deepest weightclasses in the UFC and when the two top fighters in the division face off on Saturday it should be something to see.
Here’s a
Middleweight Jason Miller has been given a shot at redemption after falling flat on his face in his return to the Octagon this past December, as it was announced this weekend that the colorful competitor will face C.B. Dollaway at the UFC’s annual Memorial Day Weekend event. Miller lost to Michael Bisping after the two faced off as coaches for TUF 14 in what UFC President Dana White labeled as one of the “most lopsided” fights he’d ever seen.
News of the May 26 match-up was confirmed by the UFC, as well as Miller who went on Twitter to write, “Gonna show the naysayers and more importantly, us monkeys what I’m capable of.”
Prior to his loss to Bisping the 31-year old Miller had won two in a row. However, he has not beaten a relevant adversary in more than four years, taking out Tim Kennedy in December 2007 before making a 4-3 run with victories over Katsuyori Shibata, Kala Hose, Tim Stout, and Kazushi Sakuraba, so “Mayhem” will have a lot to prove come showtime at UFC 146. He is 23-8 overall with nineteen stoppages including submissions of Denis Kang and Robbie Lawler.
Dollaway will also be out to show fans (and his employers) he still belongs in the UFC after being finished in a pair of consecutive clashes. The 11-4 Ultimate Fighter finalist has gone 5-4 since his time on the show.
No other fights have been revealed for the card though it is believed heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos will defend his title against Alistair Overeem in headlining action.

The UFC’s inaugural main event on Fuel TV will go forward as planned, as both Diego Sanchez and Jake Ellenberger hit their marks at Tuesday’s weigh-ins.
Two of the UFC’s most talented middleweights – Alan Belcher/Rousimar Palhares – have agreed to mix it up on May 15 in New Jersey as part of the main card at UFC on FOX 3, an addition completing the quartet of clashes scheduled to air on the network’s airwaves.
UFC President Dana White confirmed the bout earlier today via Twitter.
The match-up will mark the second for Belcher since returning from an eye injury that kept him out for more than a year and nearly ended his career based on the severity involved. His first involved an opening round stoppage of Jason MacDonald at UFN 25, the third straight victory for the 17-6 Roufusport fighter.
Belcher Feared for Future After Frightening Injury
The 14-3 Palhares is also in the midst of a three-fight winning streak with a January submission of Mike Massenzio serving as his most recent appearance inside the Octagon. Known for his devastating submissions and overall power, “Toquinho” has had his hand raised in the past against the likes of Ivan Salaverry and Dan Miller.
The other three fights set for FOX are topped by headlining action from Jim Miller-Nate Diaz with Lavar Johnson vs. Pat Barry and Josh Koscheck vs. Johny Hendricks rounding out the broadcast.

We are a little over two months into the UFC’s seven year deal with the FOX television families and one of the biggest complaints about the deal is the fact that Fuel TV is not readily available to many fans of mixed martial arts.
Overall the channel is available to approximately 36 million homes in the United States, a far cry from the 100 million homes that received the UFC’s former partner, Spike TV.
This week Fuel TV will, at least temporarily, remedy that situation as they will offer a

Here’s the UFC’s new pay-per-view intro that replaced the gladiator opening. It’s not bad, definitely better than the gladiator, but I feel like it’s missing something.
Dana White said they spent an “obscene” amount of money on it. Maybe they would have been better off using that money to license The Who’s Baba O’Riley so they could use the video they play in the arena to amp up the live audience before the main card starts. Now that video gives you goosebumps and gets you pumped up to see some fights.
The ratings are in for UFC on FOX 2, and while the UFC’s second fight card on the network did not top the November 12, 2011 one hour special that the promotion used as an introduction, the numbers were still strong.
The ratings for the three fight card peaked during the main event between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis, when an average of 6.08 million viewers were tuned into the event.
The overall average for the fight card, which ran two hours and nineteen minutes, was 4.661 million viewers. The
MMA Weekly reports that tonight’s UFC on Fox 2 drew 17,245 for a gate of $1.2 million. It was the UFC’s first appearance at Chicago’s United Center since UFC 90.
Although the attendance figures were solid, the gate figure pales in comparison to UFC 90 when the gate exceeded $2.8 million. On that night, Anderson Silva defended his title against Patrick Cote.
Via MMA Weekly:
The promotion’s last trip to the Chicago area was the Allstate Arena in the suburb of Rosemont for UFC 90. That event drew a slightly lesser attendance of 15,359, but drew more than double the live gate, totaling $2.85 million.
The gate did beat the first event televised on Fox at the Honda Center in Anaheim. That event drew 11,600 for a gate of slightly over $1 million.
In addition, MMA Junkie reports the bonuses were announced and each received $65,000. All of the prelim fights received the night’s bonuses.
Lavar Johnson: KO of the Night
Charles Oliveira – Sub of the Night
Evan Dunham and Nik Lentz – Fight of the NIght
The UFC’s most charismatic middleweight, Chael Sonnen, will now get his wish to rematch Anderson Silva after edging out a close decision victory over Michael Bisping.
Evan Dunham talks about his win over Nik Lentz, the blood in the fight, how he feels about the stoppage, and where he feels he belongs in the lightweight division.
It may not have been the consensus “Submission of the Year” but if you’re a MMA fan there’s no doubt Frank Mir’s finish of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140 is etched into your memory. For those who have suffered some sort of massive head trauma since then, Mir locked on a Kimura and broke the Brazilian’s arm after “Minotauro” refused to tap to the technique.
While Nogueira’s intestinal fortitude was respectable it also put him on the shelf for a significant period for time in order to recover from his shattered limb. However, now that he’s undergone the necessary surgery the popular pugilist is already back to lightly working out with the pace expected to pick up in the coming months. Nogueira updated fans on his condition in an interview with TATAME where he reflected on the loss and pulled a positive out of the situation.
“I was really upset about what happened, but it wasn’t meant to be,” the 35-year old icon explained. “I had it in my hands, I saw the knockout, but I stopped and used a completely mistaken game plan. I stopped punching when I shouldn’t and I paid it with a loss.”
In terms of how his arm is doing now, Nogueira continued, “The doctor told me after six weeks I can do my cardio, but I gotta wait at least two and a half months to put impact on my arm,” adding he’s been swimming as a means of strengthening it.
“I think about fighting in the middle of the year, but I gotta be patient,” Nogueira concluded, saying he was trying to be read in time for the UFC’s rumored stop in Sao Paolo, Brazil this June. Until then he’ll continue rehabbing with the expectation his affected bones will have fully solidified by the end of February. The show is expected to feature champions Anderson Silva and Junior dos Santos in respective action with the background of 100,000 fans in a soccer stadium.

The UFC’s first preliminary bout telecast on the FX Network clearly shows that fans aren’t yet used to the promotion’s switch to the Fox family of networks.
With a new focus following a loss to Jim Miller last March – the first loss of his career – Kamal Shalorus is ready to get back on track at UFC on FX in Nashville.
ESPN's Outside the Lines looks at fighter pay in the UFC, and the UFC responds with a video of their own with footage not aired during owner Lorenzo Fertitta's interview with the cable station.
UFC president Dana White talks to Todd Harris and Kenny Florian about the promotion's international goals on this unaired segment from "UFC Tonight" on Fuel TV.
One of the UFC’s primary goals in 2012 is to overcome the adversity they’ve faced getting MMA sanctioned in New York and finally put on a show there, likely at Madison Square Garden based on the historical significance and location. And, to hear UFC President Dana White talk about it, the odds appear to be in favor of such a thing occurring at some point sooner than later.
White recently discussed the cause’s current status where he was not only enthusiastic about their chances but already has a fighter in mind for headlining action.
“Real close,” White replied when asked how far away MMA in NY was in a conversation with MMA Fight Corner. “It’s going to happen and I guarantee it’s going to happen this year.”
Based on the uncertain nature of exactly the “when” would actually occur it’s clearly impossible to have a match-up already made for the UFC’s eventual debut in the Big Apple. However, White knows who he’d prefer to book for the card’s main event.
“It would be nice to go in there with, probably, Jon Jones,” the hard-working head honcho revealed.
Jones, the transcendent UFC light heavyweight champ, hails from Rochester, New York.
Currently the hang up preventing MMA’s sanctioning in New York relates to a handful of State politicians who feel the sport is too brutal as well as what is believed to be a butting of heads between the culinary union and Zuffa based on an issue with the lack of union workers at Fertitta-owned Station Casinos.

Next Saturday, Jose Aldo will put his title on the line against Chad Mendes. Their match headlines the UFC’s second foray into Brazil, after a wildly successful first show earlier this year. Jose, whose list of conquered foes contains Urijah Faber and Mike Brown, will be putting his title on the line for the fifth time.
So what makes Chad "Money" Mendes different than Urijah Faber and Mike Brown? That's the question I asked myself when breaking down the scrap between Aldo and
The UFC announced that MetroPCS will be the exclusive wireless sponsor of the UFC. The deal makes the second sponsor the UFC has picked up this month.
Via UFC press release:
MetroPCS will be integrated within UFC’s digital media assets and will produce exclusive content that will be distributed across several MetroPCS channels, including metropcs.com, MetroVISION, MetroSTUDIO and the company’s social media channels. MetroPCS customers will also have exclusive access to wallpaper, ringtones and other mobile accessories featuring their favorite athletes of the Octagon®.
Additionally, MetroPCS will participate in the UFC’s widely popular Octagon Nation Tour™, hosting the fully-customized, 18-wheeler UFC truck at store locations across the country. This will bring the excitement of the Octagon to consumers around the nation, with the chance to meet their favorite UFC athletes and take part in the UFC’s ultimate fan experience on wheels.

It looks like Duane “Bang” Ludwig will no longer have to ask for signatures of random losers on Facebook so that his knockout of Jonathan Goulet almost six years ago can be recognized as the UFC’s fastest ever. The adulation-hungry Ludwig was informed on Saturday via the post-Myspace home of Internet attention whoring, Twitter, that the UFC is changing the official time of his 2006 fight to four seconds. This means that we all have newfound respect for him as a ninja and love him with every part of our bodies, especially our peepees. According to BleacherReport, Ludwig was thrilled that he is now THE MAN:
“One of my students, Blake, actually texted me on Christmas Eve saying, ‘Congrats,’” Ludwig, 33, recently explained to Bleacher Report. “I said, ‘Thank you, but congrats on what?’ Blake texted back, saying that Mr. Dana White tweeted me saying, ‘For (Christmas), you have the fastest KO in UFC history and it will be changed ASAP.’
“I said, ‘Thank you,’ pulled up Twitter and (saw) Mr. White's tweet and was so happy. I screamed, ‘F yeah!’ pretty loud and tweeted Mr. White back, saying, ‘Thank you!’ I started texting a few people like my wife, Bas Rutten, my manager, Sven Bean and a few others. I replied to a few tweets and was just so happy.”
Unfortunately for Ludwig, his goal of being universally worshiped will not be completely realized, as the NSAC has concluded after lengthy consultations with its lawyers that the four seconds of the Ludwig-Goulet fight is REQUIRED to carry the legal name “11 seconds” from now until the apocalypse. Yes, that’s right, America has strayed so far from its “Land of the Free” moniker that even time itself is imprisoned by the the red tape of government bureaucracy. That’s it, I’m off to join Jeff Monson. Ludwig would also probably prefer to ignore the fact that an officially-recognized two-second knockout happened when Ryohei Masuda met Takahiro Kuroishi in a 2008 RINGS fight. But whatever. Duane is such a ninja that we probably can’t even see his tears fall before they run off to slash someone’s throat somewhere. The Ludwig-Goulet fight can be seen here.
Nick Diaz is set to face Carlos Condit in the main event at UFC 143. When that fight concludes, Diaz will either walk out of the Octagon as the UFC’s interim welterweight champion or he will leave the Mandalay Bay Events Center with his first loss in 12 fights...
Hiroshi 'Iron' Nakamura is excited to test himself against the best bantamweights in the world, and he believes those fights will take place in Bellator, not the UFC.
The UFC’s newest sponsor, Respect Your Universe, Inc. (RYU), has signed its first UFC star as it has entered into a deal with welterweight Jon Fitch. The Portland-based brand will sponsor Fitch at UFC 141 in his match with Johny Hendricks.
Via RYU press release:
“We are all very excited to have Jon join the RYU team as our first Mixed Martial Arts athlete,” commented John Wood, President of RYU. ”Jon embodies the spirit and essence of respect, honor, strength and nature; the pillars of RYU. We look forward to working with Jon and his team in the continuing growth of RYU.”
Recently, RYU announced it was UFC’s newest sponsor as UFC 141 would be its first event with the brand’s presence. The sponsorship deals come in lieu of its first full line of clothing this spring, tagged “Built for Athletes, Suited for Style.”
Payout Perspective:
RYU follows in line of most UFC brands that also sponsor its fighters. We shall see how the RYU brand determines how it picks and chooses its fighters. Fitch is a calculated “get” as he could be a top welterweight depending on how he comes back from his shoulder injury. RYU stresses that it uses recycled and organic material in its clothing. It may fit in with Fitch’s lifestyle considering his vegan diet although that may be assuming too much.
Returning heavyweight jiu-jitsu ace Fabricio Werdum will face off with well-rounded contender Roy Nelson at the Feb. 4 event, which emanates from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Additionally, featherweight prospect Dustin Poirier will lock horns with hard-punching wrestler Ricardo Lamas.
Two pivotal confrontations have been announced for the UFC’s second network television effort, as the No. 1 contender for both the middleweight and light heavyweight titles will be decided at UFC on Fox 2.
Though the UFC’s recent run of live events is set to end this weekend, fans couldn’t have asked for a better note to end on as UFC 139 is stacked from top to bottom with talent including as good a PPV card as has been seen in some time.
Four of the show’s main players will sit down with media this afternoon to discuss their bouts at UFC 139 including headliners Dan Henderson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, as well as Cung Le and Wanderlei Silva whose middleweight match-up appears destined to end with one man seeing stars.

While there’s no doubt the spotlight is on FOX tonight for the UFC’s historic debut on network television, Bellator is also putting on a solid show worth at least the effort to record or watch when it replays tonight at 11:00 PM EST.
Bellator 57 is highlighted by a pair of Season 5 Tournament finals featuring a quartet of respected competitors
In one match-up, middleweights Alexander Shlemenko and Vitor Vianna will duke it out. Shlemenko, who went the distance against 185-pound champion Hector Lombard after winning an earlier season tournament, will be looking for his sixth straight win since the loss, while Wand Fight Team staple Vianna made it clear he’s more than just a BJJ expert with a sub-minute knockout of Bryan Baker last month in the semifinal round.
On the other side, UFC veteran Ben Saunders will look to make highly-touted youngster Douglas Lima the next victim on his run towards a date with welterweight title-holder Ben Askren. Then again, doing so should be no east feat considering Lima’s ongoing eight-fight run.
Five Ounces of Pain will be tuned in when prelims start streaming through Spike.com at 4:00 PM EST until the final shot of the 7:00 PM EST broadcast on MTV2/EPIX when main card action goes down.

When thinking about the qualities one might find in a world class Mixed Martial Artist, especially those in the heavyweight division, words like “hardworking” or “ferocious” might spring to mind. However, as was recently shown on the UFC Primetime special attached to UFC on FOX 1, other crucial characteristics appear to be a solid support group at home and remembering your roots.
Though UFC champion Cain Velasquez and top contender Junior dos Santos, who face off in less than two weeks at the UFC’s historic debut on network television, were both shown training extremely hard in anticipation of their November 12 fight, the two hulking heavyweights also put a premium on time with friends/family as well as maintaining touch with their humble beginnings.
If you missed the show this past Sunday, the UFC has since been made available for public consumption through the internet. Enjoy!

The Ultimate Fighting Championship® announced today that it has agreed to terms with broadcaster Jon Anik, who will serve as a commentator and on-air talent for the fastest-growing sports organization in the world. The 33-year-old Boston native, who has served as a top ESPN host for nearly six years, will handle play-by-play duties for upcoming UFC® events to air on FX and FUEL TV. Jon will also fulfill the newly-created host position for the revamped Ultimate Fighter® on FX. In addition, he will host UFC’s new magazine show, Ultimate Insider, which premieres on FUEL TV in January.“Jon Anik has been a top tier talent at ESPN for a number of years and I’ve made it a priority to bring him over to the UFC as we start our new partnership with FOX,” UFC President Dana White said. “It’s critical to seek out the best talent in the business as our company continues to grow.” Anik, who began his stint with ESPN in 2006 as a SportsCenter anchor, has handled play-by-play duties for college football and the 2010 WBC heavyweight title fight between Vitali Klitschko and Shannon Briggs. He now heads Octagon-side with the opportunity to fulfill what he calls “a chance of a lifetime.”“The UFC is one of the strongest brands in sports, and in my opinion, it’s the greatest sport in the world,” Anik said. “The product speaks for itself. More frequently than any other sport, the UFC delivers. I had the chance to be on the road at UFC events when I was with ESPN and what separates the UFC from other sports is that it prides itself on being hands-on and fan-friendly.” “I look forward to helping play a small role in bringing the UFC to as many people across the world as possible. I’m really excited to a part of an organization that is filled with quality people who are the best in the world at what they do.”Anik, his wife, Christine, and their daughter, Riley will relocate to Las Vegas. He will be based out of the UFC’s corporate headquarters.
The latest bout added to the UFC’s annual New Year’s Eve Weekend event is almost certain to feature some form of finish considering the match-up’s participants.
According to the UFC, lightweight grapplers Jacob Volkmann and T.J. Grant will meet on December 30 at UFC 141 as part of a card headlined by former champion Brock Lesnar’s battle with devastating Dutch striker Alistair Overeem.
Grant was victorious in his lightweight debut after mixed results in the UFC at 170-pounds, locking in an Armbar on Shane Roller earlier this month at UFC Live 6 to pick his thirteenth win by way of submission in seventeen total wins. The 27-year old Canadian also holds past victories over Jason Burns and Ryo Chonan.
His opponent, playfully dubbed “Christmas” based on his resemblance to Jim Carrey’s character from Dumb and Dumber, will enter the evening on a four-fight winning streak with decisions over Antonio McKee and Danny Castillo in the bunch.
In addition to the above bouts, UFC 141 is also set to include Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks and Alexander Gustafsson vs. Vladimir Matyushenko.

Masterful middleweight champion Anderson Silva can now add UFC Undisputed cover-athlete to his already impressive list of accolades in the sport. Making the distinction even more special in nature, Silva was selected by the public who was, for the first time, given the option of choosing any of the UFC’s current title-holders to fill the coveted spot.
“Silva possesses a tremendous work ethic and incredible prowess inside the Octagon, making him an excellent choice to serve as our cover athlete for the game,” explained THQ Executive VP Danny Bilson of the fans’ vote.
Silva’s success in the cage often appears to be something straight out of a video game, making his choice particularly appropriate, including highly memorable finishes of Vitor Belfort, Rich Franklin, and Forrest Griffin.

Much like the past couple of season’s of the UFC’s venerable reality series The Ultimate Fighter, the current season is floating along in the ratings game.
Four fighters walked away from the UFC’s inaugural trip to the U.S. capital with $65,000 in post-fight bonuses, as Matt Wiman, Mac Danzig, Anthony Johnson and Stefan Struve were each awarded for their performances at UFC Live 6 at the Verizon Center.
