We're back for another edition of the Bloody Elbow News Roundup and we'll try to focus on things completely unrelated to the dog and pony (and weed and testosterone) show in Las Vegas today. Well, one piece of non-Diaz/Sonnen news came out of the meeting that might be of interest so I'll touch on that, but the rest of this post will be NSAC-free. Instead we'll look at what's next for Josh Barnett, who Anthony Pettis wants to fight next, check out part two of UFC Primetime, and try to figure out why Bob Sapp is such a strange guy. Here we go.
The futures of the two Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix finalists Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier have been debated since Cormier emerged victorious on Saturday night. Cormier will likely fight one last time in SF after his hand heals, but what about Barnett? It's well-known that The Warmaster and Dana White have had their differences in the past. Would he come to the UFC? Maybe get released? Neither, apparently. According to Sergio Non of USA Today, Barnett will fight once more in Strikeforce:
But it turns out that the other tourney finalist, Josh Barnett, also will have one more bout in Strikeforce, parent company Zuffa told USA TODAY on Monday.
Barnett also suffered a broken hand in the bout and he won't be back for a while either, but it's very interesting that they're willing to leave Barnett floundering in a dead SF heavyweight division.
Switching gears to this weekend's UFC 146 card in Las Vegas, NSAC confirmed today that veteran referee Herb Dean will be in charge of the main event bout between UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and challenger Frank Mir. And if you missed episode 2 of UFC Primetime: Dos Santos vs. Mir, you can check it out below (part one can be seen here):
After the jump we'll hear from UFC lightweight Anthony Pettis, take a look at a couple of videos leading up to JDS winning the heavyweight title back in November, and give you the chance to listen to Bob Sapp's bizarre interview with MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani earlier today. There's a couple of other tidbits in there too.
Dale Earnhardt's grandson Jeffrey Earnhardt is making his MMA debut tomorrow night in North Carolina. (via MMA Fighting).
Invicta FC 2 now has five bouts scheduled for the card (via MMA Rising).
Anthony Pettis spoke to BJPenn.com about his recovery from injury (he's not back to full training yet) but he'd like to return at UFC 151 on September 1st. He was asked if he'd like to fight Donald Cerrone next, but he has other ideas:
For me, I want to fight Nate Diaz! I mean I was promised a title shot a couple of times, they said it after my Lauzon win, you know that I was probably next in line. Then all of sudden Diaz comes out and he has a good performance against Jim Miller and I am forgotten about. So I mean I want to fight the guy that beat Cerrone and get the #1 contender spot. I’m looking for a title shot here in my next couple fights or you know one more win and then a title shot.
Paula Sack was able to get some great footage of Junior dos Santos before his UFC on Fox bout with then-UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, and two of the videos have been recently released. You can view them both below (via the UFC's Youtube page).
Finally, we'll close out with some goofiness. Everyone's favorite MMA circus act, Bob Sapp, was a guest on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani today and...well, it was odd. Sapp comes on at 2:13:35 of the video and you've basically got to hear it for yourself. He admits that he won't take damage in a fight so he doesn't suffer any long term effects from it, even if he's making 30-40k a fight. Ariel then asks him if he's throwing fights, and he once again says he fights for money and he won't take damage. A long, bizarre rants follows and his constant laughing is just playing creepy. Check out the video below, or check MMA Fighting for some of the choice quotes.

While he's no longer scheduled to appear in the main event of UFC 146 against Junior dos Santos next month, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight Alistair Overeem is still expected to appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today (April 24, 2012) at 12 p.m. ET.
Overeem's management yesterday sent out a press release that blamed his 14:1 T/E ratio, which is more than twice the state's maximum allowable limit, on an anti-inflammatory he'd been taking for a rib injury that just so happened to be laced with testosterone.
It is not 100 percent known today whether Overeem will actually state his case before the commission or if he'll be officially withdrawing his license application and asking for a continuation.
Whichever occurs, MMAmania.com will be LIVE, updating all the details on the happenings of the commission hearing today.
We'll have complete updates of the hearing after the jump:

The information regarding K-1 is really beginning to pour out and in a hurry. The show that we all knew was happening has finally been formally announced by the new owners of K-1. LiverKick took some time today to speak with Doug Kaplan, the head of K-1 Global, and were impressed with what we heard. This announcement solidifies the names that we've seen kicked around for the MAX tournament, with a few spots still open.

The big news are the participants in the K-1 World MAX Final 16 so far, which we have the names of twelve fighters, with four spots still being negotiated. Also there are a few Heavyweight Superfights being planned, with some absolutely huge names in talks to fight. Hopefully we'll have more on that next week, as well as venue information.

I'll admit it up front: I can't stand professional wrestling. I generally think the activity is gutter theater and the association with MMA problematic if unavoidable. But I also know Lesnar energized the mainstream media in a way to cover MMA like almost no fighter before him has done. In that sense, I both detest and love the man.
Join me for today's live chat at 1 p.m. ET as we discuss Lesnar's future, what's next for Nick Diaz (after his BJJ super fight), whether Muhammed Lawal could join the ranks of professional wrestlers now that he's on the outs from Zuffa and whatever YOU want to talk about. The floor is yours, so bring your best questions, comments, gripes and praises to today's discussion.
Remember: you can login to today's live chat using Facebook, Twitter or simply by creating your own account.
Alright, be back here at 1 p.m. ET. I'll talk to you fine folk then.
Dana White confirmed this news to mmajunkie.com today but did not give specifics as to the cause for Lawal's release.
Muhammed has certainly had an awfully bad run of things lately considering his positive test after his fight with Lorenz Larkin, had microfracture surgery and suffered multiple flushings and operations after that due to an infection and just today was fined $39,000 along with a 9 month suspension from the aforementioned positive test.
After Lawal's hearing today he had this to say about NSAC commisioner Pat Lundvall:
I honestly feel like Lundvall was a racist bitch asking me if I can read or speak english, Go on somewhere with that [expletive]!!!
This to me is a pretty clear case of "it is not what you say but how you say it". If Mo had a problem with what was said to him ( I don't blame him for feeling offended) he really should have just talked about it rationally, without name calling and swearing. Just posing an open ended question about it to a few media outlets or on Twitter would have accomplished a much more positive result (pun not intended). Lashing out in this juvenile manner may have cost him his job and I can't say I blame Zuffa for giving him the boot.
Surely there will be much more on this to come in the following days.

Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, 31, was sentenced in Las Vegas, Nevada court today to 50 hours of community service and anger management counseling for battery charges related to an incident in a Las Vegas nightclub. The top UFC heavyweight also received a suspended 90-day jail sentence. If the terms of today's sentencing are met, any follow-up punitive action will be dismissed.
The striker faced a maximum of six months in the Clark County Detention Center and not more than a $1,000 fine. Overeem must appear in court again on Las Vegas on September 26th.
The charges Overeem faced resulted from an incident that took place at the Wynn Las Vegas on January 2nd of this year. A woman alleges Overeem pushed her in the face, which caused her to "stagger back".
The former Golden Glory fighter was not in attendance at today's hearing. He was instead represented by his attorney, David Shesnoff.
Overeem was in attendance at today's press conference in Las Vegas promoting UFC 146. He faces Junior dos Santos on that May 26th fight card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the organization's heavyweight title.

Today (Sun., Feb. 5, 2012) is the big day, Maniacs. No, it's not just the day after a major UFC event, though UFC 143 was a big one.
No, today is Super Bowl Sunday.
On top of your usual top flight MMA coverage, we'll be mixing in live updates of the big game today between the New England Patriots and New York Giants. We know some of you folks simply prefer MMA and believe me, there's plenty of that to go around, but we also know there are just as many football fans, including myself. So let's have some fun with this.
After all, it's the last game until next season.
After the jump, get all the information you need to know on today's game from the official kickoff time to a live stream online.
Super Bowl XLVI takes place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, for the very first time thanks in large part to Peyton Manning and his many successes with the Colts that helped get the stadium built. Ironically enough, he's likely going to be playing for a different team next year.
Super Bowl XLVI is scheduled to officially kick off at 6:29 p.m. ET time. The NFL is rather stringent when it comes to kickoff times, so you can bank on that football flying through the air right around 6:29 p.m. ET time (5:29 p.m. local).
Super Bowl XLVI will be broadcast live on NBC with Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth doing commentary. Of the many "A-team" broadcasters, they're one of the very best. However, if you can't get to a television and you're only able to get online, there's no need to search for an illegal stream. For the first time ever, NBCSports.com will stream the game on its site.
The Super Bowl XLVI halftime show will feature Madonna in the NFL's latest bid to find a really old performer who won't embarrass them on live television. If you're looking to place blame for the recent spate of old time musicians rocking at the big game, you can thank Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake for trying to get cute and ruining it for everyone.
The Patriots are favored by three points despite the fact that they lost to these same Giants earlier this year by four points at home.
There you have it, folks. Stay tuned later today for live coverage and updates of Super Bowl XLVI.

Earlier today, Yahoo’s Dave Doyle announced that today was his last day as MMA/Boxing editor at Yahoo! Sports.
Doyle stated the following message via social media website Twitter:
Today is my last as MMA/boxing editor at Yahoo! Sports. It’s been an awesome ride working with great folks. Thanks for everything.
Sources tell MMAPayout.com that the cutting back on non-mainstream sports by Yahoo was due to their tumultuous 2011, which saw Yahoo’s stock dip under $17 and saw gross revenues decline by over 20%. Another key member of Yahoo’s MMA team is long-time MMA and Pro Wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer, who also been with Yahoo since 2007. His contract is also up this week. At this time, it is unsure whether Meltzer will be able to continue his affiliation with Yahoo Sports, as the struggling company tries to workout it’s budget for the new fiscal year. Longtime Boxing and MMA reporter Kevin Iole, Steve Cofield, and Maggie Hendricks are reported to be staying with the team.
Yahoo will now shift their coverage to more mainstream sports, such as the NFL, NBA, and MLB, instead of those that are more niche such as combat sports (i.e. MMA, Golf, NASCAR). Rumors of a possible shakeup within Yahoo! Sports first began around the Summer of last year. The dismal fiscal results made sure those early rumblings came to fruition.
In terms of Yahoo’s fiscal 2011, Forbes stated the following:
“Even with gross revenues declining by over 20% in 2011, Yahoo’s Q4 2011 results were hardly a surprise, as the company completed a tumultuous year filled with leadership and investor squabbles. For now, CEO Scott Thompson has acknowledged that the company has to deliver more monetization on digital content in 2012, which is a must for Yahoo to stop its shrinking presence in the online ad space.”
Yahoo will now try to focus on it’s core business, which will include selling off Asian assets and letting go non-performing Yahoo! properties, as Yahoo’s CEO Thompson has stressed “effective allocation of capital as a priority” moving forward.
This isn’t the first mainstream sports media shake-up that has impacted MMA. In November of 2011, AOL’s MMAFigthing.com was sold to Vox Media – parent company to SB Nation- after AOL has also been struggling financially. A few days later, USA TODAY Sports Media group (Gannett) made the announcement that they had acquired MMAJunkie.com.

I'm happy we can all mutually agree that the hottest incarnation of Angelina Jolie was the one portrayed in the 90s cult-classic, Hackers. It's 2012 and I'm still trying to find a chick that can pull off short hair while effortlessly rocking a motorcycle jacket. Once that happens, you won't be hearing much from me -- regardless of an impending 2012 apocalypse on civilization.
Today during the press junket for UFC on FOX 2, Dana White clarified his stance on SOPA and discussed the recent hacking of UFC.com which occurred last weekend. Jokes on you, UGNazi (the hacker group that attacked UFC). Dana White doesn't even care that you hacked UFC.com. In fact, he challenged hackers to do it again. USA Today has the transcript of today's statement:
Is SOPA the perfect bill? No, it's not.
The only thing that we're focused on is piracy. Piracy is stealing. You walk into a store and you steal a (freaking) gold watch, it's the same as stealing a pay-per-view.
I don't care what your twisted, demented idea of stealing is. These kids that grew upon the Internet have never had to pay for anything, so they think you shouldn't have to.
Keep hacking our site. Do it again. Do it tonight.
You know what's happening is? These guys look like terrorists now, and a bill that was about to die is about to come back. ...
I'm not afraid of the Internet. I love the Internet. It's fun to get on there and cruise around and stuff. I'm not afraid of you.
You want to keep hacking our site, go for it. Watch what happens. You're hurting yourself.
Well, when you challenge a group of individuals that hacked the FBI and the Department of Justice's website all within two weeks, of course they're going to respond. Here's what JoshTheGod stated just a few minutes ago regarding Dana White's digital invite.
If anything does go down tonight, we'll be sure to keep you informed of any l33t shenanigans. Those UGNazis are tough -- they must use Gibsons.
Update: Now it appears that Dana White and Anonymous are having a debate about piracy on Twitter. Intense night!

Being born with the last name Gracie essentially implies you are destined to strap on a Gi at some point in your future to hone about the craft the family is synonymous with – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The same is true regardless of gender, a point driven home by Rose Gracie in a recent interview where she discussed her formative years and how her love of BJJ has translated into one of the fastest-growing submission-grappling tournaments in the sport.
“I always knew of jiu-jitsu being part of our lives (but) I don’t think I realized until I was much older the impact and the greatness behind it,” she began in a conversation with Jiujitsu Mania. “My dad (Rorion Gracie) moved to the US when I was very young with the goal of bringing Jiu-Jitsu to America. Because my dad was always gone I was able to spend a great deal of time with my grandpa Helio (Gracie).”
“I remember he would tell me bedtime stories where he would always somehow be the superhero with jiu-jitsu powers,” Gracie fondly recalled. “There was one particular story that was my favorite and it was about how he had jumped off a boat into the ocean to save a man and several sharks came to attack him and one by one he would armlock choke or triangle them and one by one he would defeat those sharks by using his jiu-jitsu ‘powers’. He would give me very specific details of the moves. That was my first jiu-jitsu ‘lesson’.”
More specific lessons soon followed and Gracie gradually began following in her family’s footsteps. The respect she soon gained for the art-form is one she still carries with her today.
“I am not sure what is going on today with jiu-jitsu but this is not what my Grandfather envisioned,” stated the mother of three. “My grandfather had expressed his dissatisfaction while he was alive by changing his belt from red to blue. Some people have somehow transformed the art and philosophies of jiujitsu into a commercialized product that is so far beyond its original application and intent that jiu-jitsu today is unrecognizable in comparison to its predecessor.”
To help get back to the BJJ roots established by her beloved grandfather, and the grandmaster of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (Helio), Gracie formed the Gracie Nationals a few years ago with rules including random drug testing and the ability to win by submission only.
“I wanted to put on an event that has meaning, an event that keeps the art true to its roots,” Gracie explained. “One day I was talking to one of my Grandpa’s black belts and my personal confidant Pedro Valente from Gracie Miami where he follows my Grandfather’s philosophies like no one else, and somehow he told me what I needed to do. It was like someone had opened a window of possibilities for me. It was surreal. The fact that I could potentially bring my Grandfather’s jiu-jitsu back to life was very inspiring and I never looked back.”
With her attitude and family connections it appears Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, and the sport of BJJ in general, are in capable hands.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today (Jan. 4) unveiled the latest addition to its ambitious 2012 line-up with UFC on FUEL TV 2, the second entry into the cable television network's live mixed martial arts programming on April 14 at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
Today's announcement, made during the UFC 142: "Aldo vs. Mendes" media conference call, did not reveal any potential match-ups; however, Swedish-born star Alexander Gustafsson, victorious over Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC 141 on Dec. 30, is likely a leading candidate.
USA Today has more:
Officials for UFC in recent years saw Scandinavia emerge as the brand's leading untapped market in Europe. Fans in Sweden and Norway have become knowledgeable about mixed martial arts, said Marshall Zelaznik, UFC's managing director of international development.
Europe had been a point of emphasis for UFC in 2009 and 2010, with shows in Ireland, the United Kingdom and Germany in those two years. But UFC visited Europe just once in 2011, while focusing on other regions such as Canada, Australia and Brazil to accommodate a surge of interest in those areas.
Alright Maniacs, we know the UFC is heading to Sweden and we also know where we can watch it. Anyone feel a little bogged down with all the upcoming events? Or is there no such thing as too many free fights?
Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for upcoming fight announcements to this still-developing fight card.

Popular UFC middleweight Vitor Belfort recently vowed to give fans a “behind the scenes” look at his camp as he prepares to face Anthony Johnson in a few weeks at UFC 142. “The Phenom” has since produced his first entry in the series, introducing viewers to a few of his coaches/training partners and then closing with a message affirming his mindset is wholly on getting ready for the fight rather than a future date with Wanderlei Silva or second shot at the divisional title.
Belfort Discusses Upcoming UFC 142 Vlog Series
“My head is on today,” Belfort explains in the clip. “Tomorrow will take care of (itself). Today is the day. Today is the day that counts. I’m gonna make every day count so on (January 14) will be the day I’m gonna perform my athleticism, techniques…but if I don’t take care of today tomorrow may not come. So we take care of today.”
Belfort-Johnson will take place as part of a PPV card featuring featherweight champion Jose Aldo defending his belt against undefeated grappler Chad Mendes. The 34-year old veteran will be looking for a second straight win since falling to Anderson Silva while Johnson will be making his middleweight debut after a successful run as an oversized 170-pounder.

Today was the big day for Georges St. Pierre’s knee surgery.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who is considered one of the best orthopedic surgeons in sports medicine, performed a complete reconstruction of GSP’s ACL and repaired damage in his meniscus at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles earlier today. According to GSP, the doctor said the operation couldn’t have gone better.
Good news! The surgery (ACL patellar tendon autograft reconstruction) was a total success! Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who performed the operation, said it could not have gone better. Ligament is super strong. Thank you for all the messages of support- gave me a lift!
St. Pierre’s recovery time is expected to be between 6-10 months depending on how he responds to rehab, so if all goes well, we may see him back in the Octagon late next year.

The CSAC righted a wrong today.
If you recall, Mackens Semerzier lost to Robert Peralta at UFC on FOX 1 after Peralta knocked him down with a accidental head-butt. The illegal strike was missed by referee “Big” John McCarthy, but the replay clearly showed that the headbutt, and not a punch as it appeared in real-time, started the final sequence that led to Peralta’s TKO victory.
Semerzier filed an appeal two days after the fight requesting that the result be overturned, and today the CSAC obliged by changing the official result to a no-contest.
Semerzier’s management, Sucker Punch Entertainment, tweeted the news earlier today and called for a rematch. No word yet though if he’ll get it.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) will convene later today in Las Vegas (Dec. 12, 2011) to discuss a litany of combat sports related topics.
Chief among them is Alistair Overeem, who is on today's agenda for, well, that remains to be seen. The mixed martial arts community has been abuzz since "Demolition Man" flew back to Holland earlier this month to care for his cancer-stricken mother.
Overeem, of course, is scheduled to headline the UFC 141 pay-per-view (PPV) event opposite Brock Lesnar at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Dec. 30, in a contest that is widely recognized as a number one contender's bout, designed to produce the next challenger for reigning division champion, Junior dos Santos.
While rumors are running rampant, it could be as simple as "The Reem" getting his official license to compete. Or it could be something that directly impacts the promotion's year-end fight card.
That's where we come in.
MMAmania.com will provide live updates and breaking news from today's meeting between Overeem and the NSAC beginning at 6 p.m. ET, right here, after the jump.

A new business partner recently told me that you'll never forget the day you sell your first company. Having been through the process himself, he easily rattled off the date he sold his first venture.

That's day MMAjunkie.com graduated from the little blog that did to the latest acquisition of the USA TODAY Sports Media Group.

USA Today Sports Media Group announced its purchase of MMAJunkie.com. The purchase includes “its related editorial assets across all platforms, including its daily radio show.”
Via USA Today press release:
With more than one million unique visitors per month, MMAjunkie.com is one of the leading online news destinations for the sport, as well as a content partner for several print, online and TV outlets. It also produces the daily podcast/radio show “MMAjunkie.com Radio,” with a TV simulcast syndicated through Fight Now TV.
MMAjunkie.com will retain its unique URL, and will also be rolled in to the USA TODAY Sports Media Group’s online coverage at MMA.USATODAY.com by mid-December 2011.
Payout Perspective:
Not only does USA Today acquire MMA Junkie, but Vox Media (parent to SB Nation) purchased MMA Fighting earlier in the week. The media consolidation can be a positive sign or negative depending on what your take is on MMA media. These acquisitions show that mainstream media groups see mixed martial arts as a growing industry as evidenced by the purchase of these sites. The MMA Fighting acquisition is interesting considering SB Nation has 3 other quality web sites in its stable. With the UFC deal, Fox legitimized the sport and tacitly made it acceptable for other mainstream media to look into the value of MMA. It will be interesting to see how much the sites will change in terms of content and look. Will MMA be covered by more mainstream sports media types? Both groups state that the sites will be “business as usual” as far as content.
We will see how each progresses and evolves under its new ownership.
MCLEAN, Va. - USA TODAY Sports Media Group today announced the acquisition of mixed-martial arts site MMAjunkie.com and its related editorial assets across all platforms, including its daily radio show.

"This is an exciting acquisition for us," said Tom Beusse, president of the USA TODAY Sports Media Group.

'Unanimous' is a name for a method of victory that I will never obtain in the cage. Unanimous would be the exact decision for a small group of people if you asked them if they want a handful of Goldfish crackers. The word unanimous is also the name for Whoa! TV's new video, featuring Nate Marquardt which comes out today, 11.11.11. Today resembles is a date that most likely resembles Wolverine's fully extracted adamantium claws. If written in numeric form, today also appears to be a hand with an extra finger.

Yes, that Don King. The flamboyant boxing promoter who just turned 80-years-old but remains as wily as ever.
The man who promoted such mega-events like the "Rumble in the Jungle" and the "Thrilla in Manilla," wants to use his savvy and know how from the boxing world to see if he can't compete with UFC President Dana White and the UFC.
From USA Today:
Calling MMA "sophisticated barbarism," he predicts MMA will complement, but never overtake, the "sweet science" of boxing.
"I'm looking forward to doing (MMA) too. And creating a competition between the UFC and whatever I call the MMA company that I put together," says King.
King may not be as prominent today as he was say, 20 years ago, but he's still got enough pep in his step to attempt such a daunting task.
But could he actually succeed in competing with the UFC? Our friends at BadLeftHook.com have an answer:
So will he enter MMA? Sure, he really might. Don's still a big thinker, but just isn't in the boxing game the way he used to be. If he thinks there's an opportunity in MMA, and he can get the right backing, he might give it a go. Will he succeed? No, he won't.
King's big complaint about boxing today is that cable TV executives have far too much power and far too little knowledge of the sport to actually succeed.
This has led to match-ups combat sports fans aren't willing to pay to see.
The power structure in MMA is a lot different and with that, King seems to believe he can become the next Dana White.
Anyone think he can? Who wants to see Don King in MMA?
It appears the "Mad Genius" is at it again. Speaking at today's UFC on Fox Media Conference Call, UFC President Dana White revealed his grand plan for the promotion's hit reality series, The Ultimate Fighter. After recently announcing that Brazil would play host to the very first International edition of the show, White elaborated today, explaining that the country will be just one of several to get its very own version of TUF....
LAS VEGAS - The traditional pre-event press conference for this week's UFC 137 show takes place today, and you can watch a live video stream of the festivities here on MMAjunkie.com.
Today's event, which is open to fans, takes place at Las Vegas' Brooklyn Bridge at New York-New York Hotel & Casino with UFC president Dana White and UFC 137 fighters B.J. Penn, Nick Diaz, Matt Mitrione, Cheick Kongo, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and Roy Nelson.
The video stream begins at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT local time).
It’s a big day for my partner in crime, Jim Genia, today. His first book “Raw Combat: The Underground World of MMA” finally hits store shelves.
Rather than tell you what’s the book about myself, I’m going to let Jim tell you about it in this interview with The Fight Nerd.
If you haven’t already pre-ordered the book, you can pick up a copy over at Amazon.
Congrats Jim!
File this one under "least surprising thing to happen today."
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today held a conference call for the media to promote its upcoming UFC 137 event that will take place on Oct. 29 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Thanks to a knee injury suffered by Georges St. Pierre, the B.J. Penn vs. Nick Diaz fight was bumped up to the main event, which, naturally, means Diaz will have to fulfill a few more promotional duties.
The first of which was today's call but, surprise surprise, the Stockton slugger was nowhere to be found.
When asked, UFC Director of Communications Dave Sholler confirmed that Diaz was, in fact, supposed to be on the call and that steps were being taken to find out where he is.
Finally, 45 minutes into the call, Diaz was located and joined the call. And immediately he claimed he had no idea about a call taking place today:
"I didn't even know there was a call. I was sleeping then my brother tells me there's a call so here I am."
UFC President Dana White expressed his frustration at the situation on Twitter by saying, "I'm hearing UFC dropped the ball on the Nick Diaz no show today!! SUCKS."
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Diaz's opponent, B.J. Penn, actually bothered to show up for the call on time and of course he was asked what his thoughts are on Diaz's disappearing act. Here was his response:
"Nick is Nick. That has nothing to do with me. He does always show up for the fight."
Thankfully, this means everything will go ahead as planned, which is good because this card could not have handled another high profile fight dropping out.
Especially this one.
"All's well that ends well," said Sholler about Diaz waiting so long to join the call.
Diaz maintains that he does what his manager tells him, nothing more, nothing less. He just wants to train and fight and that's all there is to it.
If only that were so, right?
Fans are invited today's "M-1 Challenge 27: Magalhaes vs. Zayats" official fighter weigh-ins.
The ceremony takes place at Metro Sportz Bar in Phoenix. The nearby
Grand Canyon University Arena hosts the following night's
Showtime-broadcast card.
The first fighter is scheduled to hit the scales at 8:30 p.m. ET (6:30
p.m. MT local time). All 14 fighters will also be available for
autographs and pictures following the weigh-ins.
A special UFC 140 press conference takes place today, and you can watch a
live stream of the proceedings here on MMAjunkie.com at 1 p.m. ET (10
a.m. PT).
The press conference takes place at Toronto's Air Canada Centre, which also hosts UFC 140 in December.
Featured at today's presser are UFC 140 headliners Jon Jones and Lyoto
Machida, UFC president Dana White, and UFC Director of Canadian
Operations Tom Wright.
You mad?
One might think Rashad Evans would be after news dropped today that his light heavyweight title shot, along with his grudge match, against Jon Jones went up in smoke.
And even worse, the one man that knocked him out cold, Lyoto Machida, would be taking his place at UFC 140 on Dec. 10 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
However, in a statement released today, "Suga" takes the complete opposite track and, in fact, says he's not upset at all. Injuries are an unfortunate part of the fight game and he knows that better than anyone.
It's because of that -- and his business savvy -- that he understands why the UFC made the decision to pass him up yet again. Here's what he had to say:
"After my last fight against Tito Ortiz, I dislocated my right thumb, which required it to be set back in place and held with pins. 24 hours ago, my physician removed the pins. At that time, I learned that it would require another three weeks of rehabilitation before engaging in any exercise or training that would require the use of my hand. Dana White and I spoke earlier today, and I fully understand his decision to put Machida against Jones for the title at UFC 140. Given the rehabilitation time I require for my dislocated thumb, I would not be 100 percent ready by December 10. The UFC has to keep making fights that entertain the fans. I would have done the same thing as Dana in his position. I'm asking for the fans to support me as I rehabilitate my hand, and I promise I will be back fighting very quickly."
Should the UFC have waited an additional three weeks to make the big money grudge match between Jones and Evans? Or did they make the right call inserting Machida and letting him take his best shot?
Opinions, please.

Rankings!
Our partners in crime over at BloodyElbow.com have once again published their divisional rankings for mixed martial arts in the nation’s largest daily newspaper, USA Today, for the month of September 2011.
For those of you unfamiliar with the process, here’s how it works:
"The rankings, which will offer a definitive perspective of top MMA fighters across all weight-classes, will be released monthly and published in the Sports section of USA TODAY, online at USATODAY.com and on SB Nation’s MMA commentary and community blog, BloodyElbow.com … The USA TODAY/SB Nation Consensus MMA Rankings are compiled each month by Nate Wilcox and Richard Wade of BloodyElbow.com. The rankings utilize each of the top MMA rankings from multiple unique sources.
