There's nothing I could say about last night's Strikeforce title fight of Gilbert Melendez vs. Josh Thomson that hasn't already been said by UGer, Neil McCauley, in this thread on The Underground. In just one swift post, the guy encapsulated my entire belief system regarding the outcome of Melendez's sixth consecutive title defense. This Neil McCauley then went on to make an even more accurate statement within the message board thread, securing my complete admiration for his way of thought. I'm sure he's probably a giant dork normally, but last night he was a friggin' superstar.
The truth is, no one in the UFC can run through Josh Thomson, and people that expected Gilbert to completely demolish a guy that's only been finished once in his career is just an unrealistic notion. As far as the entire 'Kawajiri thing' people have brought up -- last year I sat next to Thomson on my way from Singapore to Tokyo and we discussed his Dynamite!! 2010 bout with Kawajiri. He essentially told me he was lured into the fight on very short notice due to the enormous amount of money DREAM offered (and actually paid) him. I'm sure if that bout went down again, the result may be different -- but that goes with everything in MMA.
The point of all of this is that it's completely disrespectful to boo anyone that put on an incredible performance for your price of admission. It also goes without saying that if your fiancé is muay-thai fighter Kerri Ann Taylor, all the moronic fans will be taken care of as illustrated in this following video.

Want to become M-1 Global's Light Heavyweight Champion, but not have to get punched in the face or submitted by former titleholder Vinny Magalhaes in the process?
No problem! Just buy his belt on Ebay.
That's right, the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Champion, who continues his war of words with M-1 Global Director of Operations Evgeni Kogan, says he's done with the overseas promotion after they failed to give him a title defense while under contract.
That means he's got no reason to hold on to the strap and has offered it to the highest bidder, which as of Monday morning (May 14, 2012) is right around $2,600. Not bad for a guy that was one fight away from winning The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 Finale.
The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt, who is also training Chael Sonnen in his spare time, is the winner of five straight, finishing all five of his opponents in the process en route to capturing M-1's 205-pound title. And that didn't stop him from packing on a few pounds to win the 99 kilogram division of the 2011 ADCC submission grappling world championships by defeating Fabricio Werdum.
Now you can own a piece of mixed martial arts (MMA) history for a few thousand bucks. Just don't be surprised if the M-1 mafia shows up at your house, asking to have it back.

Chiesa has had to endure the death of his father during the season and was able to outwrestle Jeremy Larson to advance. His opponent, Joe Proctor, a teammate of Joe Lauzon, tapped out Chris Tickle to get here.
The call was originally planned to include coaches Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber, but both have been pulled after Cruz's recent injury which forced him out of his planned title defense.

It appears that UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will be meeting Dan Henderson on September 1st. The card hasn't been announced yet, but would likely be called UFC 151 based on currently scheduling. MMA Fighting relays the info:
UFC president Dana White said that the organization was targeting an early September date for the UFC light-heavyweight champion's next title defense, likely on Labor Day weekend.
That would put it exactly three weeks after UFC 150 in Denver and three weeks before UFC 152 in Toronto, which seems like a good fit. No location has been determined for the tentative card as of yet.

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva puts on a show for fans down in Brazil while training for his upcoming title defense against Chael Sonnen, reportedly scheduled for UFC 147 on June 16, 2012, in Sao Paulo.
There's a lot of doubt surrounding the event, however, from whether or not it will take place in Sao Paulo or Rio de Janiero, to Sonnen repeatedly claiming he's signed no contract and the rematch against Silva has yet to even be officially offered to him.
UFC President Dana White has repeatedly stated that it's happening, it's happening in June and it's happening in Brazil. We'll see.
In the meantime, enjoy watching Silva hit mits to the soothing sounds of DMX's cover of "Aint No Sunshine."
As expected, UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos will make his first title defense on May 26 in Las Vegas.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is set to defend his title in the main event of UFC 145 on April 21 in Atlanta, but who he will face has not been decided yet and depends on tonight’s UFC on Fox 2 main event between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis.
UFC President Dana White announced the news during UFC on Fox 2, which featured Jones as an analyst alongside hall of famer Randy Couture.
Jones (15-1) choked out Lyoto Machida in December for his second title defense and fourth win of the year. “Bones” planned to take several months off, but asked the UFC to book his next fight after only a few weeks and will likely meet Evans, his ex-teammate and former light heavyweight champion, or Davis, an undefeated NCAA wrestling champion.
Stay tuned to MMAFrenzy.com for more on Jones’ next fight at UFC 145.
Officially or unofficially, Antonio McKee sees his fight with Brian Cobb at MFC 32 as a title defense, and plans to leave no doubts following the fight.
UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos, who will face Alistair Overeem in his first title defense, discusses his opponent, as well as his lingering knee injury. Dos Santos is complimentary of Overeem's recent performance against Brock Lesnar, but says it's he and the Dutchman now, and someone is getting knocked-out.
UFC lightweight Gray Maynard helped dominant champion Jose Aldo prepare for his latest title defense, along with enjoy some sun and fun in Brazil.
Maynard reportedly spent more than three weeks at Aldo’s camp, helping the UFC featherweight champion train for his fight against Chad Mendes. Maynard called Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas his home, but has trained at a number of gyms, including American Kickboxing Academy and Nova Uniao.
Here is what Maynard had to say about Aldo’s overall skillset:
“I knew he was good, but I had no idea he was as good as he is in every area. Really unbelievable, especially his takedown defense. That goes for all of Nova Uniao [Aldo's home gym] also. He’s really one of the most, if not the most complete fighter I’ve ever worked with.”
Aldo has remained undefeated in the WEC/UFC, and has quickly climbed the pound-for-pound rankings — a dominant win against Mendes will only help him gain more fans.
Mendes is a tough guy and skilled fighter, but I just don’t think he’s ready for someone like Aldo.
"I met Gray when I was going to fight Kenny (Florian), he was the main event against Frankie (Edgar). We were always joking around with each other. From there we started a friendship. I told him it would be great if he could come train with us. Good for him and good for us. It's great to have such a talented guy come over. And thank god, now was a good time for him to come. He came around now that I am needing a wrestler to train with. Gray is a great wrestler who has a lot of experience and is a great competitor. So it was great to have him test our skills. I hope this partnership will last, and that he will come train for his fights here. For us to learn from him and for him to train with a lot of good lightweights."
UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo brought in the big guns to prepare him for his next title defense against Chad Mendes at UFC 142 this Sat., Jan. 14, 2012, at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. After striking up a friendship at the UFC 136 event they both competed on, Aldo asked former lightweight title challenger Gray Maynard to come help get him ready for the biggest grappling test of his career. It was incredible timing, really, that led to these two getting together just in time for "Scarface" to get some solid work in with an accomplished 155-pound wrestler. But will "The Bully" be able to teach him enough to defeat "Money" Mendes this Saturday night?
Strikeforce produced it's first offering of 2012 tonight, with an entertaining line-up from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Reigning Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold made his first successful title defense in the headlining bout, stopping Keith Jardine in the opening round. In the co-main event, former Light Heavyweight title holder Muhammed Lawal knocked out Lorenz Larkin, while heavy-handed veteran Robbie Lawler finished Adlan Amagov with a well-timed flying knee...
LAS VEGAS - Luke Rockhold's first title defense proved a rather quick and efficient one.
The Strikeforce middleweight champion used a late-first-round onslaught to batter UFC vet Keith Jardine - a former light heavyweight making his middleweight debut - and claim a TKO victory.
The title fight headlined "Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine" and aired on Showtime. It took place at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
In bout after main-card bout, proven Strikeforce commodities meet their
lesser-tested counterparts at Saturday's "Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine" event in Las Vegas.
The event's headliner features middleweight champ Luke Rockhold's first
title defense, and it comes against longtime UFC veteran Keith Jardine,
who's attempting to reinvent himself in a new division.
The co-main draw has the well-traveled Strikeforce veteran Robbie Lawler meeting middleweight Adlan Amagov.
According to noted oddsmaker Nick Kalikas of BetOnFighting.com, it's none other than Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar. "The Answer" opens as a -130 favorite headed into his next title defense against Ben Henderson, which is scheduled for UFC 144 on Feb. 26, 2012, over in Japan.
"Bendo" comes in as the smooth underdog at +100.
Anyone jumping on this line with wallets wide open? Or do you expect a dramatic shift as we get closer and closer to fight night?
It's pretty incredible, when you think about it, that Edgar still isn't getting the credit he deserves after consecutive amazing come-from-behind performances against Gray Maynard, the last of which resulted in a fourth round knockout win.
"The Bully" was taken down but Edgar still can't get no respect.
Henderson, on the other hand, deserves every bit of the accolades he's currently receiving for the 2011 fight campaign he just put together.
After ending 2010 with the most humiliating defeat of the year, "Bendo" dusted himself off, picked himself back up and headed for the Octagon to reinvent his name.
And that's exactly what he did.
Mark Bocek, Jim Miller and Clay Guida all stepped up to the plate and struck out swinging, as Henderson laid waste to each one of them, all within the span of eight months.
But is he good enough to snatch the 155-pound title away from Edgar?
We're still a ways away from fight time, Maniacs, but who do you like for your money and who ya' got straight up?

Contrary to popular opinion (and LowKick.com's own Community Rankings), UFC Champion Frankie Edgar is not the best Lightweight in the world. Instead, according to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, that honor belongs to the San Jose based organization's title holder, Gilbert Melendez. Undefeated since 2009 and currently riding a six-fight winning streak, Melendez recently made his third consecutive title defense, defeating top contender Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision...

The bout headlined the Showtime-televised main card of "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal," which took place at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego.
SAN DIEGO - Her layoff lasted 18 months; her latest title defense lasted 16 seconds.
After a year-and-a-half-long layoff due to stalled contact negotiations, Strikeforce women's featherweight champion Cristiane "Cyborg" needed little time to make short work of overmatched opponent Hiroko Yamanaka.

Sick of talking, and ready to do some walking.
That's the current mindset of Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez as he nears his third title defense, which comes against Jorge Masvidal.
Usually, he doesn't mind doing media. But this fight has been different.
UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones is in the spotlight this weekend for his title defense against Lyoto Machida and a win would complete a great 2011. Regardless of the result at Saturday's UFC 140, ESPN SportsNation is giving fans the opportunity to cement his status for what he's done.
The popular show has named Jones one of eight finalists in their second-annual "Awesomest Dude Of The Year" contest, a bracket where online voting decides who moves onto the next round. Jones is the only MMA representative and fans can vote exclusively on Facebook for who they think should move on.
Jones is paired up against someone that watches him frequently in big MMA fan, actor and WWE talent Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Jared Allen and Tim Tebow from the NFL, Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin from the NBA, extreme sports star Travis Pastrana and women's soccer player Hope Solo are also in the tourney. (Yes, Solo is nominated for 'Awesomest Dude'). Over 270,000 votes were collected for 2010 winner and soccer star Landon Donovan.
Jones is 3-0 so far in the calendar year with wins over Ryan Bader, Mauricio Rua and Quinton Jackson. A victory over Machida Saturday would give Jones wins over three former UFC champions in one year, which would be a first.
SBN coverage of UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida
This Saturday is UFC 140: Jones vs Machida in Toronto, Canada. As they do with every event, the UFC is holding a pre-fight press conference for fans and media this morning. The presser will be the final media appearance for the fighters before the weigh-ins tomorrow afternoon.
It will be Jon Jones' second title defense, a feat that hasn't occurred since Chuck Liddell held the light heavyweight belt. Since Liddell only Quinton Jackson and Lyoto Machida have recorded a title defense. Many fans consider Machida to be the only many in the division to challenge Jones due to his unorthodox style. The last time Lyoto fought was in Toronto against Randy Couture.
In the co-headlining position, Frank Mir faces Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera for the second time in his career. Mir was the first man to stop Big Nog by TKO but after the fight it was discovered that Antonio entered the night with a slew of injuries. Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre has been forced to withdraw from his February 4th title defense against Nick Diaz due to an injured ACL. Stepping in to replace the champ will be top contender Carlos Condit, who will now face Diaz in a 170-pound interim title fight.
UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones sees a much
bigger role in the UFC than just a delivery man for punches, kicks, and
throws.
Jones sees himself as an ambassador of the sport, and hopefully, a
figure that will elevate the industry-leading promotion to new heights
as it transitions to network TV.
"One of my main goals in the UFC is to try to change the sport for the
better (and) try to elevate the UFC organization to a different level
with the demographics," Jones said in advance of his title
defense this weekend against Lyoto Machida at UFC
140.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - When Cain Velasquez seized the UFC's heavyweight crown more than a year ago, he seized another title from Brock Lesnar that night too: "baddest man on the planet."
Velasquez returns to the octagon for his first title defense this Saturday at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. - the site where he captured the championship - to meet No. 1 contender Junior Dos Santos.
But the hype surrounding his bout with the Brazilian boxing specialist rolls off the former Arizona Sun Devil's back.
Speaking on FOX Sports, UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez spoke about his upcoming first title defense against Junior Dos Santos, this weekend in Anaheim, California. Currently 9-0 in his Mixed Martial Arts career, Velasquez won his title from the big hands of Brock Lesnar, after impressively finishing the former WWE Superstar in Round 1 at UFC 121. Velasquez has 8 KO/TKO finishes out of 9 professional fights. The only man to take Cain Velasquez to decision was Paris, France representative Cheick

UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre wants to recover the right way
following an injury that scrapped his planned title defense against
Carlos Condit.
St-Pierre on Wednesday told Sportsnet.ca
that he actually suffered two injuries - not one as originally reported
- and doesn't anticipate returning before the end of January or early
February.
"The recovery, I want to do it well," he said. "I don't want to do it too fast."
It appears the UFC will continue to struggle with PPV sales this year as one of their biggest stars, Georges St. Pierre, has been forced to drop out of his title defense next weekend at UFC 137. This is another major blow to what has already been a rather dismal year for the company.
Dana White announced through his twitter last night that GSP would be pulling out the fight due to injury, but it was later confirmed that the welterweight champion had sprained his knee during training. He’s expected to resume training in four weeks.
This of course leaves BJ Penn vs Nick Diaz as the main event for UFC 137. For us hardcore fans, this fight is still more than enough reason to purchase the card, but will casual fans feel the same way? It’s certainly an exciting match up but Nick Diaz was never a major draw for Strikeforce, and little has changed since then.
BJ Penn is still well known to even casual fans but I doubt he can carry this PPV on his own, and without a strong supporting cast it’s unlikely this PPV is going to be successful. This is a very unfortunate turn of events for the UFC after already having to move Nick Diaz from the main event but I’m sure they’ll recover just fine. With their FOX debut and Lesnar’s return to the Octagon later this year, things are still looking up.
Less than two weeks away from another title defense, current UFC welterweight champion Georges St Pierre was forced to withdraw from his bout with Carlos Condit due to a knee injury suffered in yesterday’s training. News of the injury broke from Dana White’s twitter feed “GSP out with Injury!!! It’s his knee” This is an [...]
UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre suffered a setback on Tuesday, spraining his knee during a sparring session at Tristar Gym in Montreal and subsequently bowing out of his title defense against Carlos Condit at UFC 137.
In a somewhat unfortunate turn of events for this month's UFC 137 fight card in Las Vegas, Nevada, UFC President Dana White revealed on Twitter that Georges "Rush" St. Pierre is out of UFC Welterweight Title clash with Carlos "The Natural Born Killer" Condit. White tweeted "it's just one of those days", to the disappointment of MMA fans around the world that expected to see the French-Canadian in his second title defense this year:
White went on to add: "It's GSP'S knee. We will sit Carlos to wait for
While injury forced a short delay in Bellator lightweight champion Eddie
Alvarez's planned title defense with season-four tournament winner
Michael Chandler, fans won't have to wait long for the contest.
Originally scheduled to take place at this weekend's Bellator 54 event,
company brass recently announced the matchup has been moved back just
five weeks and will take place at November's Bellator 58 card.
Already featuring middleweight champion Hector Lombard in a 195-pound
non-title fight with Trevor Prangley, Bellator 58 takes place Nov. 19 at
Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
The year 2011 has been a banner one for Vinny Magalhaes.
So far he's registered four straight MMA wins (all finishes), captured the M-1 Global light-heavyweight title, and recently won a gold medal at the prestigious Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championships.
The grappling tournament acted as a weekend getaway as Magalhaes finished up his training camp for his first title defense, which takes place at Friday's Showtime-televised M-1 Challenge 27 event.
Sorry UFC featherweights, Jose Aldo is sticking around to make your life miserable.
When the world's largest fight promotion released a video chronicling "Scarface's" struggles to make the 145-pound limit for his title defense against Mark Hominick at UFC 129 back in April, whispers began of a possible jump up to 155-pounds.
Let's face it, a guy shouldn't have to turn himself into a skeleton just before he hits the scales.
Despite his weighty issues, Aldo went on to successfully defend his belt that night in Toronto. And he did the same just this past Sat., Oct. 8 in Houston, Texas, against Kenny Florian.
That marked his fourth title defense under the Zuffa banner and win number 20 in 21 career fights, including 13 in a row. Quite frankly, he looks unstoppable.
So why not move up, right?
Because he's still got plenty of challenges to take care of before he does all that. At least, that's what his coach, Andre Pederneiras told Sherdog.com:
"He'll keep fighting in his weight class. He might be invited to fight at lightweight, but he won't abandon featherweight, because, I believe, there are a lot of challenges left for him there. He's just arrived in the UFC and has only fought there twice. Also, I believe many 155-pound fighters will drop to 145 in order to get a title shot they couldn't get (at lightweight). So, he has a lot of fights to make before thinking about it."
Believe it or not, one of the 155-pounders that might just drop down for a superfight is current Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar.
That's because UFC President Dana White, who recently ranked "The Answer" the number two pound-for-pound fighter in the world (ahead of Aldo), has been pushing for the New Jersey native to make the drop.
The bossman thinks Edgar is fighting outside of his natural weight class and if he can win the championship 10 pounds above the weight he should be fighting, what could he possibly do at 145-pounds?
Could he beat Jose Aldo?
If Pederneiras is to be believed, and if White can be convincing enough, we might just find out.
Akira Corassani, contestant on season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter is back with another instalment of his video blog. This week, he has two special guests, UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez.
The trio of fighters were filmed at Ricardo Almeida’s gym in Hamilton, NJ just a few days removed from Edgar’s UFC 136 title defense. The three talk about Edgar’s recent title defense and briefly about Alvarez’s upcoming bout on November
After suffering a training injury to his elbow and arm, reigning M-1 Global champion Guram Gugenishvili has been forced to withdraw from his title defense at M-1 Challenge XXVII.
Underdog, fluke, one hit wonder: names like these have been associated with a lot of people but most recently, with UFC lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar. Going into his third match (and third title defense) in a rubber match with Gray Maynard, many felt that history could repeat itself and Edgar may lose the belt at [...]

HOUSTON - It had the makings of a disaster - a very familiar one - but UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar stormed back and scored an elusive victory over Gray Maynard at Saturday's UFC 136 event.
Edgar, who fought to a split draw with Maynard back in January, again found himself in a 10-8 hole after one round. But the champ stormed back to win the next two rounds before earning a fourth-round TKO victory.
The title fight headlined Saturday's UFC 136 event, which took place at Houston's Toyota Center. The main card aired on pay-per-view after prelims on Spike TV and Facebook.
UFC 136 promised and delivered an excellent line-up tonight from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Reigning Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar scored a dramatic fourth-round knockout victory over Gray Maynard in the headlining bout, bringing an end to the trilogy and retaining the 155-pound strap. Also successful in their title defense was Featherweight champ Jose Aldo, who outpointed Kenny Florian in co-main event, while Chael Sonnen was triumphant in return, securing a second-round submission victory
The M-1 Challenge XXVII card scheduled for Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix took a hit on Friday, just one week away from fight night. The promotion announced that M-1 Global Champion Guram Gugenishvili was forced to withdraw from his scheduled title defense against Kenny Garner due to injury.
Gugenishvili had been training at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas when the injury occurred earlier this week. According to M-1 Global, Gugenishvili injured his elbow during wrestling drills and after
According to noted oddsmaker Nick Kalikas of BetOnFighting.com, it's none other than Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. "Bones" opens as a big -375 favorite headed into his showdown against Lyoto Machida, which is scheduled for UFC 140 on Dec. 10 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
"The Dragon" comes in as the big underdog at +275.
Anyone jumping on this line with wallets wide open? Or do you expect a dramatic shift as we get closer and closer to fight night?
It's interesting to note that when the line opened for Jones vs. Rashad Evans just last week, "Suga" was an even bigger underdog than Machida, coming in at +325. But while oddsmakers believe the Karate master is a better match-up for the 205-pound champ, one constant remains -- the consensus opinion is that Jones is damn near unbeatable.
Is there any way Machida will be the man to dethrone him?
Jones is fresh on the heels of his first successful title defense, a fourth round submission victory over Quinton Jackson at the UFC 135 event on Sept. 24 in Denver.
Machdia, for his part, hasn't been in action since April 30 when he sent UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture to his retirement home with a jumping front kick knockout.
Prior to that, however, he had lost consecutive fights, a crushing knockout loss to Mauricio Rua, who Jones defeated for to win the title, and "Rampage," who Jones defeated in his first title defense.
Three for three?
We're still a ways away from fight time, Maniacs, but who do you like for your money and who ya' got straight up?

Jon Jones entered UFC 135's post-fight press conference with as many ice packs as bruises.
Despite a fourth-submission victory over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in his first title defense, Jones was issued a six-month medical suspension, and he needed a doctor's examination to rule out any serious injuries.
But UFC president Dana White said Jones essentially got a clean bill of health. Still, he's in no hurry to bring Jones back.
UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz's latest title defense is in the books, and the titleholder was a popular topic in this week's edition of The Sunday Junkie.
Cruz's win over Demetrious Johnson and the rest of the UFC on Versus 6 card, including some heavily debated stoppages, were discussed from all angles in our weekly reader-feedback feature.
This week's winner, Ohio's Kevin "Finish Him" Durig, focused on Cruz's performance and why he and other champs deserve credit they don't always get.
With his fourth-round submission win over Quinton Jackson at UFC 135, UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones scored his first successful title defense. He also moved to the No. 3 slot in the latest Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound poll.
Jones, who debuted in the poll back in March in the No. 4 spot, leapfrogged UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo in the latest installment.
Twenty-one MMA journalists, including MMAjunkie.com's John Morgan and Dann Stupp, vote in the monthly rankings.
"There are always two battles: One inside the Octagon and another one against the weight."
UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo details the struggles to make weight for his upcoming title defense against Kenny Florian at UFC 136: "Edgar vs. Maynard III" on Oct. 8 from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
Can "Junior" shred the pounds and then shred "KenFlo?" Or is anyone predicting an upset in "The Lone Star State?"
Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez was expected to make his second title defense in mid October against the season four 155-pound tournament champion Michael Chandler. Instead, the bout has been delayed due to a nagging injury in his training camp at the Philadelphia Fight Factory.
The top-ranked lightweight explains his current predicament to HDNet:
"Without giving anything away, I just want to let fans know and let people know I tried to work through the injury. It seemed like every time, it was basically the last 10 days, every time I would get a little bit of momentum, I would setback, get a little momentum, setback. In all honesty, for me, it wouldn't be right. I'd be selling myself short to go out there on the 15th and I'd be selling the fans short to go out there on the 15th. They would be expecting to see somebody and with the consistent injury bug, there's just no way I could get the momentum to be 100 percent prepared for the 15th. It's very important to rest my body properly. The fight is not cancelled. it's just postponed I think 30 days or so. I apologize to you guys. It's not in my nature to make my injuries a part of a promotion's problem, a part of the fans' problem but again it wouldn't be fair. It wouldn't be fair to the people wasting their night tuning in and seeing me at 60-70 percent."
We wish "The Silent Assassin" a speedy recovery. Do you expect to see him back on time, Maniacs?
Reigning Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz, who will look to make his fourth successful title defense when he meets Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson at UFC on Versus 6, discusses his opponent, as well as his expectations for the fight. Cruz acknowledges the competitor that Johnson is, but says he's planning to badly hurt "DJ" this Saturday night.
He certainly looked unscathed following his first-ever title defense, but light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones is on the bench for six months unless a doctor says otherwise.
MMAjunkie.com today requested and received a list of UFC 135 medical suspensions from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies' Office of Boxing.
UFC 135 took place this past Saturday, Sept. 24, at Denver's Pepsi Center. All in all, a total of 12 athletes were suspended following the event.
UFC 135 recorded a gate of $2,089,575 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, on Sept. 24, 2011, according to official figures from the Colorado Athletic Commission released earlier today.
The final attendance of 16,344 was a result of 14,247 tickets sold and 2,097 complimentary tickets.
UFC 135 featured the first light heavyweight title defense of 24-year-old phenom Jon Jones, who successfully defended his belt with a fourth round submission victory over Quinton Jackson.
And with a fairly mediocre undercard, it bodes well that "Bones" brought the boys to the yard to watch him ply his craft. The sky is truly the limit.
Jones impressive victory set up his second title defense, which will be against Rashad Evans just as soon as both men are healthy enough to compete.
It can't get here soon enough.
Also on the docket at UFC 135 was a welterweight showdown that may or may not have resulted in the retirement of Matt Hughes, who was viciously knocked out by a returning Josh Koscheck.
Nothing lasts forever.

Filed under: Bellator, NewsBellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez has suffered an injury that will prevent him from his scheduled title defense against Michael Chandler at Bellator 54 on Oct. 15 in Atlantic City, N.J.
Bellator says the fight will be rescheduled and possibly for later in the season.
"Eddie Alvarez has a huge heart and if there was any way for him to fight on the 15th, I know he would," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said in a statement. "Ed's in spectacular condition, so both of us are hopeful that this fight can potentially still occur later this fall."
Alvarez (22-2), who has won seven straight fights, competed once this year, making a successful title defense against Pat Curran at Bellator 39 in April. Chandler (8-0) earned his shot against Alvarez by beating Patricky Freire at Bellator 44 in May to win the season four lightweight tournament.
At the Bellator 54 event, bantamweight champion Zack Makovsky will remain on the card in a non-title fight against UFC veteran Ryan Roberts. In tournament action will be the two middleweight semifinals between Alexander Shlemenko vs. Brian Rogers and Bryan Baker vs. Vitor Vianna.
