2012 UFC programming in Canada still a wild card
With a number of UFC cards being aired in the early part of the year across many of the Fox network channels, it’s still unknown as to who will be picking up the cards in Canada.
Fuel TV is not available in Canada yet, and FX Canada has specific Canadian content guidelines imposed by the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) which may hinder their ability to live UFC events to their own schedule. They are required by the CRTC to play at least 15% Canadian content on their channel in the first year, and with the fact that they will be showing The Ultimate Fighter and its replays, it may be difficult to shuffle their schedule to allow for another three hours of US Broadcasting while maintaining their own original content and balancing the impositions placed on them. It should be noted this imposition increases to 25% in the third year.
A Look at the UFC’s Deal with FOX
In Canada, Rogers Sportsnet has normally picked up UFC Fight Night cards as they air, and have often aired events tape delayed for the US (such as UFC 138) live. However, they have never had to take on as daunting a schedule as the UFC plans to have in the 1st quarter of 2012 and beyond, especially on weekdays. One UFC card, for example, is planned for Wednesday, February 15, the same night that Sportsnet has committed to airing a Vancouver Canucks hockey game.
With the exception of the Ultimate Fighter, weekday commitments were never required. Rival Network The Score carried of the WEC events, and on the very rare occasion the UFC held an event on the weekdays, Sportsnet would usually pick it up and air it somewhere in their network.
With over 2000 hours of UFC programming scheduled to take place on the Fox contract in 2012, and Sportsnet airing much of it already, along with their own in-house MMA programming, it may not be long before you see a dedicated Rogers Sportsnet MMA channel in place to rival the Fight Network and The Score’s Fighting Series.
In the meantime, Sportsnet has confirmed they are looking into their scheduling, and will announce what they will be airing shortly.
