UFC Quick Quote: Shane Carwin's doctor is '100 percent' certain that he will return to UFC

"The first thing, and this is something I've shared with my wife and family, is my love for the sport. This is what I love to do, and it's something I'm very passionate about. I'm chasing my dream. I'll see my surgeon, and I think it's 100 percent, most likely, that I'll be cleared. What's going on right now is the nerves in my legs are regenerating from the surgery I had in my mid-back. It was the T-10 through T-11. A bulging disc, ruptured disc, compressed spinal cord. It's tough to come back from, but I'm excited, and the surgeon has been very positive. One of my concerns is, how is this gonna affect me when I'm 65? Am I still gonna be able to be healthy and move around? He said, with 100 percent assurance, that I'll be fine. If the doctor said it was a definite risk to my health, yeah, I have a family. I have two kids. I have a loving wife at home, and that's the most important thing to me is my family." -- Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Shane Carwin has been on the shelf since June 2011, when he lost to (now) current UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos at UFC 131 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since then, Carwin has had to undergo multiple surgeries, extended rehabilitation periods and has gone back and forth several times regarding the time table for his Octagon return. During an interview with HDNet's "Inside MMA," Carwin revealed that he will be meeting with his surgeon soon to talk about his return to mixed martial arts (MMA). But after such a long layoff, what can fans expect from the man who once held the UFC Heavyweight interim belt? Will he still be able to do the things that he was once capable of in the cage? And if he does return this year, who do you Maniacs want to see him square off against?

B.J. Penn Shoots Down Teased Fight with Josh Koscheck

UFC president Dana White recently sparked rumors of B.J. Penn’s return to action, citing recent conversations he’s had with The Prodigy during which he’s indicated his desire to come out of retirement. Penn himself put the brakes on those rumors, explaining that he’s still essentially on the fence about ever fighting again. Today, UFC welterweight Josh Koscheck got people excited again for a possible Penn appearance when he Tweeted the following: #UFC just offered me to fight BJ Penn…I said YES!!!!! Just waiting on him!!!!!! Let’s scrap bra? Once again, Penn shot down the possibility of a return to action at this point. The 33-year-old responded to Koscheck on Twitter, letting him know that he won’t be making his next big money pay day with his help. @joshkoscheck I know it costs a lot of money to live that lavish lifestyle, big house, fast cars & you need big fights but sorry I’m not coming back anytime soon! Penn last appeared in action at UFC 137 in October, where he lost a lopsided unanimous decision to Nick Diaz. The Hawaiian legend announced his retirement following the fight and has not competed since. Recently, he’s softened his stance some and leaves a door open to some future return, though he insists he’s happy taking the time to himself right now. MMAFrenzy.com

UFC president Dana White credits Donald Trump for return to Atlantic City

Next month, the UFC returns to Atlantic City for the first time in seven years. But the return to the New Jersey city is one Dana White has wanted to make for some time. As the UFC president recently said, the city was one of the first to open its arms to the Zuffa-owned UFC more than a decade ago, and White credits one person for that: Donald Trump.

UFC 146 changes: Roy Nelson's new foe; Jamie Varner returns

A pair of injuries have forced changes to the much-anticipated UFC 146 on May 26, leading to a new opponent for a popular heavyweight and the return of a former champion. An undisclosed injury forced Gabriel Gonzaga to drop out of his main-card heavyweight showdown with popular Roy Nelson. In his place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena will step Dave Herman. Nelson is coming off a loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143, in which he took a hellacious beating but survived to a decision. The fighter nicknamed "Big Country" has dropped three of his past four bouts, all via decision. Herman (21-3) has won three of his past four fights, but is coming off a second-round TKO loss at the hands of Stefan Struve on Feb. 15. An injury has also taken lightweight Evan Dunham out of his undercard match against Edson Barboza. Substituting for Barboza is former WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner. Varner won the WEC title in Feb. 2008 and held it nearly two years. But his title loss to Ben Henderson kicked off an 0-3-1 run that led to his Zuffa departure. Varner (19-6-1) his won all three of his fights outside of Zuffa, included the past two via first-round finish. He’ll have his work cut out for him in his return bout, as he faces a foe in Barboza (10-0) who’s not only unbeaten, but has won Fight of the Night honors in his past three matches. His most recent win was a sensational spinning wheel kick KO of Terry Etim at UFC 142. The new fights were announced by the company on Tuesday night.

Dana White says Shogun Rua's next fight will be against Thiago Silva

Big Brazilian brawl? Yes, please. UFC President Dana White has been answering fan questions on Twitter and, as usual, he's dropped a few interesting nuggets worth passing along. The most noteworthy of which is the fact that when Mauricio Rua returns to the Octagon, he will do so against Thiago Silva. No event, date or location was revealed. For "Shogun" it will be his first fight back inside the Octagon since dropping a controversial decision to Dan Henderson back at UFC 139 in Nov. 2011 in San Jose, California. That pill seems even more bitter in hindsight now that it's been confirmed "Hendo" will go on to challenge Jon Jones for the light heavyweight championship later this year. As for Silva, he made his long awaited return to the cage just this past April 14, 2012, in the main event of UFC on FUEL TV 2 against Alexander Gustafsson, a fight that saw him lose via decision after three hard fought rounds. The Brazilian bomber didn't exactly impress in his return but considering how long he was on the shelf, expectations weren't exactly high. They likely won't be high for this one, either, as the degree of difficulty is actually going up despite his loss. As stated, no date was announced for this fight to take place but there are plenty of available options. UFC 149 could use another big bout on July 21 in Calgary. UFC 150 is set for Aug. 11 and needs a solid co-main event. No matter where this one ends up, what are your thoughts on the match-up, Maniacs? And who wins?

Georges St-Pierre Says MMA Training Will Resume in Two Months

ATLANTA -- Look out UFC welterweight division. Georges St-Pierre's knee is getting stronger, and it appears he's on track for a fall return. The champion is in town for UFC 145, and with his rehabilitation progressing well, he was all smiles as he walked pain-free and limp-free into the event's open workouts. During a brief interview session, St-Pierre told the media that he recently began running, as the two surgeries on his right knee continue to heal well on the long road to recovery. Because of that, he's on schedule for his return to MMA training, which he hopes will be in about two months."In two months it will be 100 percent," he said. "Now I feel something that it's not 100 percent, but in two months there's no doubt in my mind. I don't want to mess it up. If I try to jump and go too fast, I will have to do it all over again and I don't want to make the same mistake." The "same mistake" refers to a previous injury to his left knee. That time, he believes he came back too quickly and overcompensated with his right knee, leading to unnecessary damage.Because of that, St-Pierre is restricted in what he can do. He said he's currently engaging in a lot of pool exercises, gymnastics, and running. He's also getting the itch to get back in the gym, which is one he won't be able to scratch for some time. When he does return, interim champ Carlos Condit will be waiting for him.Given the timeline, a return on the promotion's November 17 return to Montreal sounds like a real possibility, but St-Pierre said given his layoff, which will hit the one-year mark on April 30, he is only concerned about when he returns, not where."Wherever it is, in England, the US, I’ll fight. I'm just going to be happy to be back and fight. When you get hurt for a long time and you're forced to pull away from training and you're forced to stop doing what you like to do everything, it makes you see things in perspective. And I just want to get back. Wherever the fight will be, I will be glad to fight, and I’m very anxious to come back."St-Pierre, who will turn 31 years old next month, said that while he has no problem in facing Condit, he wouldn't fight teammate Rory MacDonald, who many consider to be a future threat to the title. St-Pierre said that by the time MacDonald reaches the No. 1 contender spot in around two years, perhaps he will have moved on to middleweight. But first things first, and that's returning. He's on the short end of his six-month overall recovery time, and now he can start to think about fighting again."It’s awesome," he said. "I’m in good shape now, but I’m not in fighting shape."

Brock Lesnar WWE return 2012 update

For those of you still clinging on to the hope that there is hope of a Brock Lesnar return to the UFC, it's time to let it go. Those of you hoping he'll make a triumphant return to the WWE ring, on the other hand, have reason to be optimistic. That's because rumors are swirling all around Miami, Florida -- site of this weekend's WrestleMania 28 -- that Lesnar is around and in deep negotiations to return. He was teasing as much not long ago when promoting his spot in the WWE '12 video game release. Of course, he was still under contract to the UFC at the time and had yet to retire, which he did after losing to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 this past Dec. 30, 2011, in Las Vegas, Nevada. But now the path is clear and it looks like he's taking it. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has the report: Regarding Brock Lesnar rumors for the weekend, the two sides have been talking in recent weeks, as was hinted in the Dwayne Johnson interview last week when Lesnar's name was brought up as a possible opponent for next year. Meltzer is referring to an interview The Rock gave recently in which he hinted at the possibility of a match against Lesnar at next year's WrestleMania 29 in New Jersey. UFC President Dana White has already made clear that Lesnar can go back to WWE if he so chooses and the Meltzer report confirms as much. That doesn't mean it's going to happen but rumors were flying before Lesnar's UFC career was even finished, with Mark "Undertaker" Calaway even making an appearance at UFC 121 to instigate a confrontation. So for all you crossover fans out there, stay tuned for some potentially big news. And remember you can check out CagesideSeats.com to get your pro wrestling fix.

Cain Velasquez Anxious To Return From First Career Loss

When Cain Velasquez defeated Brock Lesnar and became the UFC heavyweight champion, many felt like he could reign atop the division for several years. Instead, Velasquez was forced to sit out for several months due to shoulder problems and when he did return, Junior dos Santos knocked him out in the first round and claimed the title. Now, Velasquez will make his return to the Octagon this May at UFC 146 against a fellow former champion in Frank Mir. The bout has been designated as a No. 1 contender match, as dos Santos defends his title against Alistair Overeem on the same card. During a press conference to promote UFC 146 Tuesday, Velasquez discussed why he feels fully-capable of returning from the loss to dos Santos. I mean, I love what I do. It’s just like wrestling, if you have a loss, it’s not the end of the world. You have to come back stronger. You can’t really dwell on that kind of stuff. Velasquez feels like he was slow in reacting to dos Santos, but does not plan on doing the same thing vs. Mir. This should be an exciting fight, as Mir will look for the submission, while Velasquez will try to implement his strong wrestling base. Photo credit: Esther Lin/MMA Fighting

Mike Pierce vs. Carlos Eduardo Rocha Set As First Official Bout for UFC on FX 3

Following the biggest fight of his career over Josh Koscheck in which he came up just short, Mike Pierce has his next opponent lined up in Carlos Eduardo Rocha. The two welterweights are scheduled to square off at a yet to be announced UFC on FX 3 event. The UFC has an event in place on June 8th at a city and venue that will be announced in the near future. Pierce (13-5) called out Josh Koscheck prior to UFC 143 in February, and he got his wish. Unfortunately for Pierce, he was on the losing end of the matchup according to the judges’ decision. Now Pierce will look to rebound against Rocha (9-1), who has not fought since losing to Jake Ellenberger at UFC 126 in February of 2011. Rocha was scheduled to return to the Octagon at UFC 134 in August, but was forced out his return to Brazil due to elbow surgery. He has since moved to Los Angeles to train at team Black House. The loss to Ellenberger was the first of Rocha’s career, after starting out 9-0, which included a win over Kris McCray in his UFC debut at UFC 122. Prior to the loss against Koscheck, Pierce was enjoying similar success over the last two years, going 4-1 in that span. Now with three split decisions in his last three fights, while being on the losing end of two of them, Pierce will look to make a statement in his return against Rocha. While the event has yet to be formally announced, UFC on FX 3 is expected to take place on June 8th, the week after The Ultimate Fighter Live season finale. Sean Sherk Ready to Return to the Octagon, Wants Top Name Opponent

Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk is ready to return to the UFC. After recovering from multiple injuries over the past year, Sherk is hoping to return to the Octagon before year’s end. Sherk last fought at UFC 119 in September 2010, defeating Evan Dunham via split decision. “The Muscle Shark” (36-4-1) has fought just twice in the last three years, which includes a decision loss to Frankie Edgar at UFC 98 in May 2009, and the win over Dunham at UFC 119. Between those two fights, Sherk pulled out of three scheduled fights due to injury.  The scheduled opponents for Sherk were Gleison Tibau, Jim Miller, and Clay Guida. This is the third extended layoff for Sherk, as he also faced nearly a year-long layoff following his UFC 73 win against Hermes Franca in July 2007. Following the fight, Sherk failed a post-fight drug test, testing positive for the steroid Nandrolone. However, his suspension was reduced to six months after successfully appealing the charges. He returned to the cage against BJ Penn at UFC 84 in May 2008, losing to the Hawaiian via TKO. Now, after yet another long period of inactivity, Sherk is set to return. He went to his Twitter account to declare that he is ready, stating “I will be coming back before the years end. But I need a good fight, not some chump who needs some fame!” Sherk has long expressed his desire to continue fighting top contenders, instead of being relegated to fighting prospects. With top contenders such as Clay Guida, Gray Maynard, and Anthony Pettis currently without a scheduled opponent, plenty of options are available for the former champion’s return.

UFC Set to Return to Canada with Debut in Calgary for UFC 149 on July 21st

After postponing an event for March 21st in Montreal, the UFC is set to return to Canada for the first time in 2012. But this time, instead of making a return trip to Montreal, Vancouver, or Toronto, the organization will be making its debut in Calgary. The event, likely to be UFC 149, is expected to take place on July 21st at the Scotiabank Saddledome in downtown Calgary. The Scotiabank Saddledome, home to the NHL’s Calgary Flames, has a seating capacity of just over 19,000. No fights have been announced for the event, but a few UFC fighters fight out of the province of Alberta, including Nick Ring and Jason MacDonald. Former UFC fighters including Jason Day and Tim Hague also hail from Alberta. The UFC has held three events in Canada the last two years, and is expected to do so this year. The last UFC event to take place in Canada was UFC 140 last December, which took place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. A return to Toronto is expected in 2012, along with the postponed event from March in Montreal.

Nate Marquardt is finally making his return to MMA. After being released by the UFC last June, Marquardt was set to return to action with England’s BAMMA organization. However, after multiple delays, Marquardt was released from the organization. Now he is set to return to Zuffa, but this time under the Strikeforce banner. Marquardt was released last June just hours before he was set to make his welterweight debut at UFC on Versus 4 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Marquardt was unable to gain clearance to fight due to his hormone replacement therapy use. After the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission announced the decision, UFC President Dana White released Marquardt from the organization. He last fought at UFC 128 in March 2011, defeating Dan Miller via unanimous decision. The veteran of 14 UFC fights, Marquardt debuted for the organization at Ultimate Fight Night in August 2005. His UFC career got off to a rocky start, with Marquardt testing positive for nandrolone, an anabolic steroid, following his debut. But he never failed another drug test following his first issue, and did not run into any problems until his release from the UFC. Marquardt is expected to make his Strikeforce debut against Tyron Woodley, with the matchup expected to be for the currently vacant Strikeforce welterweight championship. Stay tuned to MMAFrenzy.com regarding the full announcement of Marquardt’s signing with Strikeforce.

Marquardt returns to Zuffa

MMA Fighting reports that Nate Marquardt has returned to fight under the Zuffa banner with Strikeforce. The welterweight’s signing ends an exile that began last June when he was dismissed on the eve of his main event against Rick Story. Post-UFC Marquardt signed with UK promotion BAMMA but never fought for the company. His last fight was a win in the UFC last March. Adding Marquardt to the Strikeforce roster provides some notoriety and depth to the company’s welterweight division. Marquardt’s return was announced on Fuel TV’s “UFC Tonight.” Payout Perspective: Marquardt’s dismissal was due to elevated testosterone levels claimed to be related to hormone replacement therapy. While Marquardt’s departure from the UFC was somewhat messy, his return to Zuffa is beneficial for both. For Strikeforce, it provides the roster with a notable figure that can spark the welterweight division. For Marquardt, its a second chance with Zuffa and leaves open the possibility of returning to the UFC. The one issue that may hinder Marquardt is the potential stigma that he was terminated from the UFC due to PED use. Marquardt has not had a fight since last March so no one knows how he will be when he returns.

UFC On Fox 2 Video: Matt Hughes On Retirement, Diaz/Condit Winner

While at UFC On Fox 2 Saturday, MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani caught up with former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes and when asked about his fighting future, Hughes said he wants to compete but there's a few factors that may prohibit that. The 38-year-old said that he wants to return to the UFC, but his wife wants his fighting career to be done. The deciding factor? UFC President Dana White. At the time of the interview, Hughes said he hadn't talked to White yet but hoped to very soon. He didn't lay out a timetable for a return, but if given the green light, he wants to return as soon "as this old body can get back into shape". Hughes has lost his last two fights to B.J. Penn and Josh Koscheck by first round knockout, respectively. After competing three times in 2010, Hughes fought just once in 2011 against Koscheck who was an injury replacement for Diego Sanchez. Hughes also picked his winner for this Saturday's Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit UFC 143 bout for the interim UFC Welterweight Championship. See that on the 90 second video after the jump. Georges St. Pierre Looking To Return Late This Year

UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre has revealed a tentative timeline for his return to action. The injured champion told Inside MMA that he is planning on resuming hard training in July, and is looking to return to the Octagon in late October or early November of this year. Hard training will [resume] in July, and fighting again... for the timing to get back I would say the beginning of November. I can come back in November. You think you will fight before this year is up? Oh yeah, of course. I hope so, please, give it to me... Late October, beginning of November. That would be good. St. Pierre was scheduled to defend his title at UFC 137, and then at UFC 143, but was sidelined due to an ACL injury. If he does return at the end of October, it will be roughly 18 months since his last fight, an April 2011 title defense against Jake Shields at UFC 129. The question for the UFC will be what to do with the Welterweight title in the meantime. Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz fight for the interim belt on February 4, leaving a full 9 months before a possible title unification bout with GSP. That's a tough timeline. Do you gamble on GSP returning as scheduled and put the belt on hold for 9 months, potentially leaving a hot Condit or Diaz out of action for the bulk of the year? Or do you schedule an interim title defense - a move that could lead to another title change and potentially weaken interest in the unification match? And if you do schedule another defense, who is the challenger? It's a tough call, and I imagine depends in part on how Condit vs. Diaz plays out. But either way, it's good to hear that GSP is on his way back. Whatever you think of his style, his absence from the division is notable, and I'd rather see him fight than fade away due to injury. Full video, including some advice from Phil Davis, in the complete entry.

Gina Carano's Return To MMA Remains Doubtful

While it often seems like Showtime and Strikeforce (or at least Scott Coker) are banking on Gina Carano to return to the cage and resume her fighting career, we've certainly not had any indication from her that it would happen anytime soon. Gina's major motion picture debut is coming soon with the release of Haywire on January 20 and the early reviews indicate a bright future on the screen for the former champion. Sergio Non of USA Today sat down with Gina to talk about the film but also asked about her future in the sport: You've been hesitant in talking about your future in MMA, one way or another. What criteria would you use to make a decision about returning or not? (chuckles) There are certain things that I always dreamed of, like fighting in the UFC. That was a big one. I don't know. There's just certain things that I feel like haven't been accomplished there. There's such great women coming up in the sport; seems like a wonderful time to be in women's MMA. So I'm not sure. I'm going to kind of get on the other side of Jan. 20th and give back to this film what it gave to me. Because it was -- I won't lie and say it wasn't the best time of my life, because it absolutely was. It was really fun to creatively express myself in a sport and a passion that I love, without having to try and hurt someone. I know that there's so much that you can do in a lifetime with acting and there's only a certain amount of time you can fight. I'm keeping all these things in mind. I'll definitely know a lot more in a couple of months. Is that a way of saying that you'd be done with fighting if the movie does well and high-quality offerings come rolling in from Hollywood? Not necessarily. I think that the right offer has to come in either way. I was told that by a wonderful actress whom I've always kind of looked up to and watched in her career, the good and the bad. She told me something and I'll always remember it. She says, "No matter what, you've got make the right decisions for yourself in this life. You have to stay true to yourself." Sometimes that means walking away from something that you don't want to walk away from because you think the opportunity's going to be so great. Or sometimes that's doing something that nobody believes in, like when I started Muay Thai and I got hard time for fighting and looked at sideways for thinking that that was a profession. I think it's just going to feel right when it does. I'm not sure exactly what is going to take that decision. I'm just trying to get on the other side of Jan. 20th and look back and know I gave it everything I had to give back. Then I can have a clean slate and start and land where I'm at. To me it sounds like a return isn't happening any time soon, but doesn't quite want to permanently close the door.

UFC 142: Will The Old Vitor Belfort Return Against Anthony Johnson?

There's a phrase you are likely going to hear at some point between now and the end of Saturday night's UFC 142 card from Rio. Probably more than once. And it won't be the last time you hear it either. That phrase? The Old Vitor. When Vitor Belfort steps in to face Anthony Johnson, a lot of folks will be clamoring for the return of The Old Vitor. And if he wins? "The Old Vitor is back!" It's happened before. A lot. In pretty much every Belfort fight for the past 10 years there has been this lingering spectre hanging over the fight - the spectre of The Old Vitor. But all of this raises a rather important question. Just who is this guy? Who is The Old Vitor? It's a valid question, particularly since many new fans may have never seen this Old Vitor in action, only heard tales of him or seen old grainy footage, like the UFC's version of the Yeti. But The Old vitor is very real. He's also been elevated to somewhat of a mythological status that blurs the real story a bit. When people refer to The Old Vitor, they're likely referencing one thing - his insanely fast hands. Vitor Belfort burst onto the UFC scene way back at UFC 12, defeating his first 3 UFC opponents in less than 3 minutes (if you've never seen any of these fights, here's Belfort vs. Scott Ferrozzo, currently free at UFC.com). And he did it all with blazing hand speed, swarming his opponents and overwhelming them with punches. The most famous example of this came in 1998 when Vitor blitzed Wanderlei Silva at UFC Brazil, knocking out The Axe Murderer in just 44 seconds. But around 2000, Vitor slowed down, and those blitz KO's were left behind. As a result, any time Vitor has scored a quick KO since then, you hear cries of "The Old Vitor is back!" You heard it against Marvin Eastman in 2003, against Kazuo Takahashi in Pride in 2006, and against both Matt Lindland and Rich Franklin in 2009. The thing is, that's not the complete picture of The Old Vitor - it's only half the story. The rest of The Old Vitor is characterized by his early loses to Randy Couture and Kazushi Sakuraba. That Old Vitor is a man who, yes, had scary and sudden KO power. But if he didn't get that fast KO - if you pushed him into deep waters - he was likely to fold. The Old Vitor didn't face a lot of adversity, but whenever he did, he could not overcome it. Since 2007, Vitor has seen a real resurgence in his career. He's 6-1 in that time, with that only loss coming against Anderson Silva, and has shown more consistency than at any time since his very earliest days in the sport. Part of that return has been shedding the image of The Old Vitor. He's no longer as reliant on that fast KO. Against fighters like James Zikic and Terry Martin, he's showed a trait never in his old arsenal - patience. Yes, he still can end your night very quickly, but he now looks for the opening. And if he doesn't get it? If you push him back? He will wait, not give up as he did in the past. He has kept the best of The Old Vitor, while shedding the worst. And that makes him a scary fighter indeed. Some may be hoping for a return of The Old Vitor against Anthony Johnson tonight. But with The Old Vitor comes a lot of baggage. Me? I'll be looking forward to another strong performance from The New Vitor. SBN coverage of UFC RIO 142: Aldo vs. Mendes

Report: Fabricio Camoes Returns as New Opponent for Reza Madadi at UFC on FX 1

With Rafaello Oliveira injured, the UFC has called up another Brazilian lightweight to fill in against the debuting Reza Madadi at UFC on FX 1 in Nashville. Tatame reports that former UFC fighter, Fabricio Camoes, has been tapped to return to the Octagon and face Madadi on the January 20th card. In an interview with tatame, Morango said that he only has to sign the contract for his return to the Ultimate is finished: "I look forward to this agreement coming soon. It will be my chance to return to the Ultimate. I worked hard this year, I made some good fights, went to third, but my opponent was injured. I think I'm worthy of this opportunity." Camoes is a BJJ black belt who made his UFC debut in late 2011, drawing with Caol Uno in a fight that Camoes would have won if not for a point deduction. In his next fight, he was choked out by Kurt Pellegrino, and that was apparently all the Zuffa brass needed to see before sending "Morango" packing. Since that time, Camoes has competed for Tachi Palace Fights, winning two fights over UFC veterans Steve Lopez (a TKO), and Efrain Escuero (a decision), who was also recently called back up to the UFC as a short-notice replacement. Gabriel Gonzaga: “The UFC is my home…”

When heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga returns to the Octagon next month at UFC 142 he will have been away from the infamous eight-sided cage for more than a year, opting to recompose himself after a pair of losses in 2010 led to his release by taking some time off to focus on his love of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. However, with his mind back on Mixed Martial Arts, the 32-year old Brazilian is ready to get back into the mix starting with unbeaten newcomer Edinaldo Oliveira at the UFC’s return to Rio de Janeiro on January 14. Five Ounces of Pain was able to catch up with Gonzaga as he prepares for the bout to get, his reaction to hearing from his former bosses at Zuffa, as well as his opinion on Oliveira and what fans can expect to see this time around. “It was natural,” Gonzaga explained of return to the UFC. “I feel I never left. The UFC is my home, they take care me very good (and) I have a lot of friends there. I am excited to see everyone again!” As far as his opponent, a 13-0-1 Jungle Fight veteran with eight TKOs, “Napao” isn’t concerned about the relative unknown nature of what Oliveira brings. “I know what everyone knows,” began the 12-6 Gonzaga. “Ednaldo is though fighter and come from a great camp. But at this point I am not worried about him; I am worried about my training and I am going to be very well-trained for this bout.” Gonzaga also expects a return to the form that saw him earn a shot at the UFC heavyweight title in 2007. “I am ready to have a big run in the UFC again and it will start now at UFC 142. I want to thanks those who have been contributing for my training camp here at Team Link. It is going great,” said Gonzaga enthusiastically. The bout between Gonzaga-Oliveira is expected to take place on the FX-broadcast undercard portion of UFC 142, a show headlined by featherweight champion Jose Aldo putting his gold up for grabs against unbeaten wrestler Chad Mendes. Despite Close to UFC Career, Mirko Cro Cop Plans Return to Kickboxing

A third straight knockout loss brought a close to Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic's UFC career, but the Croatian apparently isn't quite ready to call it quits when it comes to combat sports. While he's rehabbing a torn right biceps muscle, he is also plotting a return to kickboxing, and says he will fight in a March 10 show in his nation's capital city, Zagreb. In an interview with Croatia's Fight Channel, Cro Cop revealed that he injured his right arm before his recent UFC 137 fight with Roy Nelson and decided to fight anyway. Even beforehand, he told fans that it was likely his last time in the octagon, and while he says he's done in the MMA realm, he plans to return to K-1 for the first time since 2003. "K-1 is the sport where I started," he said. "This is my first love and I find K-1 more attractive and more suitable for our Croatian fans than MMA." Cro Cop isn't scheduled to have his right arm removed from a cast until December 20, but despite his doctor's advice of staying on the sidelines for eight weeks, he has begun training in preparation for his return. Cro Cop was once considered the most fearsome striker in MMA while in PRIDE, and came to the UFC on a high note, just after capturing PRIDE's Open Weight Grand Prix after knocking out Wanderlei Silva and causing Josh Barnett to tap out to punches on the same night in September 2006. But his UFC tenure was rocky, going just 4-6 and never beating a top 10 opponent. As he has before, he voiced regret for his inability to find success in the organization, and admitted to some uninspired performances. "I'm really sorry that I did not achieve my goals in that organization and I didn't fulfill their expectations," he said. "They paid me very well. I'm really sorry about that. I gave it my best shot. I was a professional and did my best to prepare for every fight, but after PRIDE Grand Prix, to be honest, I didn't have motivation to go on." His K-1 opponent has yet to be named, but after being knocked out three straight times, there will be those that question whether a return to a striking-only sport is a good idea. But Cro Cop said he believes it will be a better fit for him given the less complex nature of it. Regardless, like many other fighters have discovered, the desire to continue competing has not been snuffed out even when your prime days are behind you. "This fire in me will last forever," he said. "This is not just some fight to me. Like every time, I will prepare like it's the most important fight in my life."  Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Efrain Escudero signs new deal with the UFC, returns vs. Jacob Volkmann at UFC 141

The Ultimate Fighter season eight lightweight winner Efrain Escudero's (18-3) sabbatical away from the octagon will come to an end at UFC 141. Sources close to the situation informed ULTMMA.com (www.ULTMMA.com) of Escudero's return to the Octagon over the weekend. The MMA Lab team member will fight prior to the New Year at UFC 141 versus Jacob Volkmann (13-2). UFC 141 is headlined by a heavyweight fight between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem and is scheduled for December 30 at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Escudero was submitted in his last UFC appearance by Charles Oliviera at UFC Fight Night in September 2010. After Escudero captured the TUF 8 contract he went 3-2 with UFC. The 25year old Escudero went 5-1 on the local MMA scene after his release from the UFC. Escudero was scheduled to meet Jeff Rexroad at Legacy Fighting Championship 9 in Houston, Texas on December 16th but pulled out of the fight when the opportunity to return to the UFC was presented to him. After a pair of losses to begin his UFC career Volkmann has reeled off four straight victories. Volkmann was submitted by Martin Kampmann in January 2010 and made the move down to lightweight for his next UFC fight. At 155 pounds Volkmann has defeated all four of his opponents via decision. A former University of Minnesota wrestler, Volkmann most recently had his hand raised versus Danny Castillo at UFC on VS 5 in August.

John Olav Einemo returns to the Octagon in January against Mike Russow

The Golden Glory/UFC battle over paying fighters seems to be nearly completely over, as John Olav Einemo will make his return to the Octagon in January against Mike Russow. The UFC cut ties with all fighters that train under Golden Glory due to problems with how fighters were paid. However, the UFC signed Alistair Overeem, a former member of the renowned Dutch team, earlier this year, thus opening a window for other Golden Glory fighters to return to both the UFC and Strikeforce. Einemo-Russow will take place at UFC on FOX 2, a show planned for January 28 from Chicago, Illinois’ United Center. News of the match-up was first reported by MMAFighting. Submission-specialist Einemo lost his UFC debut to Dave Herman at UFC 131 this past June, dropping his record to 6-2 overall as a fighter. The bout was named the card’s “Fight of the Night”. Comparably, Russow is 14-1 in his career, holding a highly memorable win over Todd Duffee, as well as a victory against Jon Madsen, inside the Octagon. UFC on FOX 2 is currently set to be headlined by Rashad Evans and Phil Davis and is also rumored to featured a bout for middleweight contendership between Chael Sonnen and Mark Munoz. Five Fights To Watch in the Month Of November

Alright, so I learned my lesson. And that lesson is tat Ryan Jimmo should never be in a post about fights to watch. His fight with Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou was actually probably the one of the worst fights in October, with possibly only Matt Mitrione vs Chieck Kongo being a worse affair. So, with the lessons learned and a new month ahead, it's time for the five fights to watch in November. Cain Velasquez vs Junior Dos Santos, UFC on Fox (November 12th): Seriously, this is an absolute no brainer. So much so that if you aren't planning on watching this fight, I want you to never return. Let me list the ways this is important. It's the first UFC fight on Fox. It's the long awaited return of Cain Velasquez. Oh and it's also for the heavyweight title. Get psyched for this fight.  Ben Henderson vs Clay Guida, UFC on Fox (November 12th): It is a shame that this fight won't air on television as I believe that it would immediately capture the audience. If you want to watch this fight, you'll need to either check out the Facebook stream or Fox.com. Henderson and Guida are likely fighting for a title shot. Dana White has not committed to it but this is as important a fight as the main event in terms of the UFC's business.  Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez, HBO PPV (November 12th): It's the return of the most successful Pay Per View fighter. The UFC is so terrified of this fight that they are airing Cain vs Junior early to avoid a cross over. The fight promises to be extremely fun and if you have the extra cash to toss, this is the PPV to order.  Mauricio Rua vs Dan Henderson, UFC 139 (November 19th): Finally...THE HENDO HAS COME BACK...TO THE UFC! Dan Henderson returns to the UFC after capturing the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt and handing Fedor Emelianenko his third straight loss. His opponent is Shogun, who returns to the octagon after knocking out Forrest Griffin at UFC 134. Dana White has said that if Hendo wins, he'll get a middleweight (?) title shot.  Urijah Faber vs Brian Bowles, UFC 139 (November 19th): Urijah Faber and Brian Bowles is possibly the most important fight on the UFC 139 card. The two bantamweights will be fighting for a shot at Dominick Cruz and the fight promises to be an exciting affair.

Georges St. Pierre Shooting for Early 2012 Return

Earlier this week we were informed that UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre suffered a MCL sprain that forced him to withdraw from his UFC 137 bout with Carlos Condit. Mike Fagan explained a little more about the injury yesterday and explained that, given trainer Firas Zahabi's timeline, it appeared that we should see a GSP return to the cage some time in the first few months of 2012. In an interview with Sportsnet, GSP confirmed that exact target for his return: "The recovery I want to do it well, I don't want to do it too fast. Because now I had an injury and I tried to train on it and maybe made it a little bit worse. I need a good four weeks to do my physio and do it right. "I would say maybe end of January, possibly the beginning of February (for my return) ... Super Bowl, around this time." It can't be stressed enough that a sprain is a ligament tear. For some reason there is a segment of the population that hears "sprain" and thinks this is something an athlete should compete through, see the reaction to Jay Cutler's second degree sprain in last year's NFC championship game. St. Pierre suffered a partial tear to a vital and structurally important part of his knee. St. Pierre's is a grade one sprain which is good in terms of being a fairly short recovery but the biggest thing with muscle and ligament damage is to be careful not to rush back as you can end up doing more damage. To tie it back to the NFL again, we see running backs every year suffer high ankle sprains (sprains of the syndesmotic ligaments) and attempt to rush back to action only to re-aggravate the injury and end up on the shelf for even longer. The UFC is in a bad position with one of their few major drawing stars out of action, I just hope they don't put any pressure on GSP and his team to rush back before his body is ready.
