UFC 149 Update: Akiyama Injured, Bahadurzada Steps in Against Alves

With judoka Yoshihiro Akiyama off UFC 149 due to injury, Siyar Bahadurzada has stepped up to face Thiago Alves in Calgary. The UFC announced the matchup earlier today. Bahadurzada recently debuted at UFC on Fuel 2, where he quickly dispatched Paulo Thiago with a vicious display of striking. The win extended the Afghani fighter’s win-streak to seven and also earned him “Knockout of the Night.” Alves will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Martin Kampmann at UFC on FX 2. Alves appeared to be on his way to victory before succumbing to a guillotine choke. UFC 149 takes place July 21 in Calgary, Alberta and will be headlined by a featherweight title fight between champion Jose Aldo and Erik Koch. MMAFrenzy.com

Paulo Thiago and Alessio Sakara handed medical suspensions after UFC on Fuel 2 losses

After a UFC on Fuel 2 card filled with finishes, it appears Paulo Thiago and Alessio Sakara, who each suffered knockout losses, were the only two fighters issued medical suspensions. Both Thiago and Sakara will be forced to sit on the sidelines for 28 days. Thiago was defeated by Siyar Bahaduzada in what was named the show’s Knockout of the Night. The strike-based stoppage was the first the Brazilian had ever suffered in his career. Meanwhile, Sakara was handed a loss by Brian Stann in the evening’s co-headliner. The loss was his second straight though the first time he’d been knocked out in nearly four years. Both suspensions were first reported by MMAJunkie. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC

UFC On Fuel 2 Results: Siyar Bahadurzada's Right Hand Not Broken

Siyar Bahadurzada made quite a splash this past weekend at UFC on Fuel 2 when he knocked Paulo Thiago out cold in just 42 seconds. In his post-fight interview, Bahadurzada mentioned that he had hurt his right hand (the one he used to KO Thiago) 10 days before the fight, and feared it was broken. He apparently was barely able to make a fist while warming up in the cage. It didn't stop him from putting a hurting on Thiago though, and he got some more good news from his doctor today: @SiyarTheKillerSiyar Bahadurzada GOOD NEWS: My right hand is not broken! UFC on FUEL TV 2 results: Paulo Thiago brings planking back after Siyar Bahadurzada knocks him out (Pic)

Who said planking was dead? His form may be a little off but Paulo Thiago brought back the fad in a big way when he got caught rushing in on Siyar Bahadurzada and was knocked out cold at the UFC on FUEL TV 2: "Gustafsson vs. Silva" event that went down yesterday (Sat., April 14, 2012) in Stockholm, Sweden. Fist met face, face met canvas, and the perfect picture you see above was the result. Outside of the embarrassment of the position, the loss drops Thiago to just 1-3 in his last four fights. Granted, those losses came against strong competition (Diego Sanchez, Martin Kampmann) but failing to win moderately big fights tends to lower a fighter's career ceiling. Will the Brazilian supercop ever break through? That remains to be seen. In the meantime, enjoy this picture of him planking with assistance from the UFC newcomer, Bahadurzada. UFC on Fuel TV 2 results recap: Siyar Bahadurzada vs Paulo Thiago fight review and analysis

Paulo Thiago has stepped into the cage with some of the best welterweights on the planet, including four current top 10 opponents, even beating one of them. He'd never been stopped before despite his crazy strength of schedule, only ever losing a trio of decisions to some top names in the UFC. So needless to say, he was expecting to at least last more than a minute yesterday (April 14, 2012) when he stepped into the Octagon against Afghani-Dutch transplant Siyar Bahadurzada on the main card of UFC on Fuel TV 2 in Stockholm, Sweden. So what in the world did Bahadurzada do to end Thiago's night so early? And where do both welterweights go from here? Follow me after the jump for our Siyar Bahadurzada vs. Paulo Thiago UFC on Fuel TV 2 post-fight review and analysis: Bahadurzada was more of an wild and aggressive striker while Thiago was more of a counter puncher, but that's not what happened when the fight started yesterday. Instead, Bahadurzada claimed the center of the cage early and kept feinting at Thiago, practically begging him to come at him. Finally, perhaps after getting flustered from 30 seconds of nothing happening, Thiago uncharacteristically lunged forward with a looping right hand. Cool as a cucumber, Bahadurzada winged a left hand over the top while stepping backwards which missed but he followed it with a right uppercut which caught Thiago on the way in and cracked him directly on the chin. The combination of Thiago's forward movement with the perfect strike on the button sent Thiago to the ground where he faceplanted completely unconscious just 42 seconds into the match. For Paulo Thiago, we didn't get to see much from him, but he strayed from what he does best in the stand-up. He got impatient and decided to initiate some offense and it cost him dearly. He likely was significantly better than Bahadurzada on the ground and would have been able to counter the former Golden Glory fighter well if he had just waited longer, but his eagerness to throw a big strike backfired. I'd like to see Thiago step in against someone along the lines of Claude Patrick next, or perhaps a further step down like Besam Yousef or even Luis Ramos. For Siyar Bahadurzada, damn was that a nice debut! He didn't get to show much of his skills as he only connected with the one punch, but stopping a guy who had never been stopped despite such a difficult strength of schedule is nothing to scoff at. Paulo Thiago is a terrific talent and he absolutely crushed him with just one strike. That's some serious power. I'd like to see him continue to develop although he's going to get thrown in against a top 20 talent most likely in his next fight. Perhaps someone along the lines of the upcoming Pascal Krauss - John Hathaway winner, the Matt Brown - Stephen Thompson winner or maybe even the Mike Pierce - Carlos Eduardo Rocha winner. Regardless of who he faced, I want to see more of "The Killer" inside the Octagon. So what did you think, Maniacs? Were you as stunned by the ease of Bahadurzada's victory as I was? Or did you expect the powerful Afghani fighter to make a big splash in his debut? Sound off! UFC on FUEL 2: Siyar Bahadurzada Knocks Paulo Thiago Unconscious

Siyar Bahadurzada waited a long time to make his UFC debut, but he didn't take long to make an impact. The first Afghan born fighter in UFC history knocked out Paulo Thiago, knocking the normally durable Brazilian completely unconscious in the first round of their UFC on FUEL 2 bout. He needed only 42 seconds to finish it out. Thiago opened the fight with a wild, slinging overhand right, and Bahadurzada countered with a short right while moving backwards. The punch landed right on the button, and Thiago collapsed face-first on to the mat. Bahadurzada didn't even need to follow-up on the walkaway KO. To add to the amazing finish, Bahadurzada said that he thought he broke his right hand about 10 days before the fight, but refused to see a doctor because he didn't want to hear any bad news. "I respect this guy a lot because Paulo Thiago comes out every time to fight," he said afterward. "I love those fighters who come to fight because I come to fight, and fans come to see a fight. I want to give them a fight." While it was the first octagon win for Bahadurzada, it was his seventh straight overall as he improved to 21-4-1. Meanwhile, Thiago's record fell to 14-4. The loss marked the first time in his career he's ever been stopped.

UFC on FUEL TV 2 results: Siyar Bahadurzada knocks out Paulo Thiago in 42 seconds

The UFC on FUEL TV 2 event taking place today (Sat., April 14, 2012) in Stockholm, Sweden, featured the long awaited Octagon debut of Siyar Bahadurzada, as he was taking on Paulo Thiago in welterweight action. Bahadurzada, known as "Siyar The Great," has been fighting professionally since 2002 and amassed a 20-4-1 record, including a six-fight win streak, before finally getting his chance to shine on the brightest stage possible. And boy did he make the most of it. Not only did Bahadurzada post a knockout victory that will likely earn him "Knockout of the Night" honors, he did so in just 42 seconds against one of the toughest opponents in the 170-pound division. Not much to say about this one, folks. Thiago came pushing forward with a winging right hand and Siyar was ready for it with a swift counter punch that landed short and clean. It was enough to put the Brazilian's lights out, just like that. Even more impressive was the fact that Bahadurzada may have entered the bout with a broken hand, as he revealed to Kenny Florian in the post-fight interview. It didn't stop him from using it to plant Thiago and post the first win of his young UFC career. At 27-years-old, the sky's the limit. Anyone know what to do with him next? Remember, too, to check out MMAmania.com's ongoing live coverage of all the main card action by clicking here.

UFC On Fuel 2 Results: Siyar Bahadurzada Knocks Out Paulo Thiago In 42 Seconds

Siyar Bahadurzada made an extremely impressive debut in the UFC, knocking out tough Brazilian Paulo Thiago with his first punch of their UFC on Fuel 2 fight. After a few seconds of measuring, Thiago came forward with a flurry and was caught on the button by a Siyar right hand that collapsed Thiago to the mat face-first. Bahadurzada landed a glancing left behind the ear on the way down, but it was already over. Bahadurzada, who had finished 16 of his 20 wins in MMA and now has six stoppages in under a minute, stated after the fight that he thought he had suffered a broken hand 10 days before the bout, but wasn't going to pull out. Doing to to Thiago, who had never been stopped before, with a broken hand is extremely impressive. Thiago was coming off a unanimous decision win over David Mitchell at UFC 134, his fourth victory in the organization. Bahadurzada, a former Shooto champion, was making his debut in the UFC and was on a six-fight winning streak entering the bout. SBN coverage of UFC on Fuel 2: Gustafsson vs. Silva

Whoa! Siyar The Killer just put Paulo Thiago to sleep in under a freakin' minute!

Geeeez, Siyar The Killer just put a lot of doubters and Paulo Thiago to sleep, and all it took was thirty eight seconds and a right hand that will be feared in the welterweight division for some time to come to do it. I didn't even register what happened when I saw Thiago faceplant live, but after watching the .gif from Zombie Prophet about 45 times you can tell it was that right hand on the chin that sent Paulo Thiago faceplanting to the canvas with Siyar posing victoriously over him. The beautiful Swedes loved it. Let's look at the rapid and curse filled reaction from the Twitterverse. Re-sign Paul Daley to fight Siyar please. Thanks. [Source]

Thiago, who next competes this weekend at UFC on FUEL TV 2, fights for his country, he fights for his law-enforcement brethren, and he fights for his team and teammates. Jacob Volkmann vs. Paul Sass scheduled for UFC 146

Jacob Volkmann and Paul Sass have a date for Memorial Day Weekend, as the two UFC lightweights will compete at UFC 146 on May 26 from Las Vegas. News of the match-up was reported by the UFC. Volkmann (14-2) is a three-time NCAA Division 1 All-American from the University of Minnesota. He has won five straight bouts inside the Octagon since a pair of defeats at the hands of Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann during his run at welterweight. Comparably, Sass (12-0) is a perfect 2-0 in his brief UFC career including submission victories over Michael Johnson and Mark Holst. Of his dozen career wins, eleven have come via tap-out with a number involving his patented “Sassangle Choke”. Though the card is still developing, UFC 146 is expected to feature a bout for the UFC heavyweight title between Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC

Ricardo Funch Replaces Paulo Thiago, Will Face Mike Pyle at UFC 142

With Brazilian Paulo Thiago being forced out of his UFC 142 fight with Mike Pyle, the UFC had to go out and find a replacement. Instead of plucking someone off the current roster, they reached into the past to a degree. MMA Fighting has the news: In addition, the UFC Brazil Twitter account also announced that Ricardo Funch, who was released from the organization in 2010, has agreed to replace Paulo Thiago against Mike Pyle at the same event. Funch, who is a member of Team Link along with another recent UFC returnee Gabriel Gonzaga, was released by the UFC following an 0-2 stint in 2009-2010. He has competed just once since then, picking up a decision win over Ryan Quinn on a Northeast local card two weeks ago. Pyle is looking to rebound from his first-round TKO loss to Rory MacDonald at UFC 133. He had won three in a row before that bout. More SBN coverage of UFC 142

Prater vs. Silva, Pyle vs. Funch Signed for UFC 142

Filed under: UFC, NewsThe UFC has called upon a couple familiar names to fill two voids left open to due injury at UFC 142. Carlo Prater, who once fought Carlos Condit for the WEC welterweight title at WEC 32 in Feb. 2008, has agreed to replace the injured Siyar Bahadurzada against Erick Silva at next month's UFC 142 event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. UFC Brazil's Twitter account first announced the news Friday evening. In addition, the UFC Brazil Twitter account also announced that Ricardo Funch, who was released from the organization in 2010, has agreed to replace Paulo Thiago against Mike Pyle at UFC 142. Funch (8-2) is 0-2 in the UFC, while Pyle (21-8-1) is 4-3 inside the Octagon. The Prater-Silva fight will serve as a homecoming of sorts for the 30-year-old Prater, who was born in Rio. He went 0-2 in WEC before getting released after an Aug. 2008 loss to Brock Larson. Since then, Prater (29-10-1) has fought for Shine Fights, MFC, and Strikeforce, among other organizations. This fight will mark his UFC debut. The 13-1 Silva, who is considered to be one of the top prospects coming out of Brazil, looked impressive in his Octagon debut defeating Luis Ramos in just 40 seconds via TKO at UFC 134 in Rio. The win extended the 27-year-old's unbeaten streak to 10 in a row. UFC 142, headlined by Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes for the featherweight title, airs live on pay-per-view on Jan. 14.  Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Thiago Alves rumored for match-up with Martin Kampmann in March

Fresh off a pair of November wins it appears the UFC may be looking to pair talented welterweights Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann in a match-up on March 3 at a yet-to-be-named event. Both men have found a good deal of success inside the Octagon and hold multiple wins over respected adversaries making for what would almost certainly be an entertaining affair if it does indeed take place. News of the match-up was first reported by MMAWeekly with Alves also publicly discussing the potential bout. Kampmann is less than a week removed from his hotly-contested clash with Rick Story at UFC 139 where he came away with a Split Decision victory. The well-rounded Dane improved his overall record to 18-5 with the win, adding to past success against the likes of Paulo Thiago and Carlos Condit. Comparably, the 19-8 Alves beat debuting Judoka Papy Abedi at UFC 138 by picking up the second submission win of his career with the finish coming in the opening round of action. The performance marked the first stoppage for “Pitbull” in more than three years after a stretch featuring five in a row including wins over Karo Parisyan, Chris Lytle, and Matt Hughes.
