NSAC Commission Meeting Live Video: Nick Diaz's Punishment And Chael Sonnen's TUE Request

The Nevada State Athletic Commission will be meeting today at 12 p.m. ET for a a commission meeting that will see a pair of items with significant impact to the UFC. A 28 item agenda will conclude with two items featuring some of the biggest stars in mixed martial arts as Chael Sonnen and Nick Diaz have their fates determined in different ways. First up, Sonnen will be requesting a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone replacement therapy. After having been busted after his first meeting with Anderson Silva for elevated testosterone levels, Sonnen is trying to get everything in order prior to their UFC 148 rematch. Nick Diaz's punishment should also finally be sorted out as he is finally on the agenda after a lengthy (and kind of stupid) process that saw his team as well as the NSAC seem to go to painstaking lengths to ensure nothing happened quickly or was done in anything resembling an orderly fashion. Having covered a ton of these meetings previously, sometimes they run quickly, other times an agenda item or two take forever and, as such, those final two items may come up quickly, or after a lengthy discussion and then maybe a bathroom break. We'll have a live video stream after the jump, so make sure you hang out here and talk about what happens. Live video, courtesy of MMA Junkie: Streaming by Ustream

Alistair Overeem Live NSAC Hearing Updates

Alistair Overeem will have his Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing today in his attempt to get his fighter's license despite testing positive for a 14:1 testosterone level, well above the maximum allowed 6:1 ratio. The test result led to Overeem being removed from the UFC 146 main event title shot against Junior dos Santos. We've talked about the situation a lot over the past weeks including looking at Dr. Johnny Benjamin shooting down the excuse Overeem gave for his elevated testosterone and a look at the full agenda for the meeting. Inside MMA was going to stream the meeting, but given that it no longer has any impact on the actual UFC 146 event, they will not be doing so. I'll provide live updates after the jump once the meeting starts at 12 p.m. ET. Live updates will be provided here at the start of the meeting: - Meeting start time 12 p.m. ET

Official Agenda For Alistair Overeem's Nevada State Athletic Commission Hearing

Alistair Overeem will take part in a Nevada State Athletic Commission meeting today at 12 p.m. ET to address the situation with his failed UFC 146 random drug test. After turning in a sample that showed a 14:1 testosterone ratio with the highest accepted level by the NSAC being 6:1. Overeem has been removed from the UFC 146 main event title shot against Junior dos Santos, but claimed in his explanation of the failed test that he was not withdrawing his request for a fighter's license from the state. We will see what Nevada has to say about all of that today during the hearing, which Bloody Elbow will provide live updates of this afternoon. On the agenda there are thirty-six pieces of "new business" with the entry for "Request by mixed martial artist Alistair Overeem for a license, for possible action. (Record 36-11)" checking in at number 36. So, barring a motion to address Alistair's item on the agenda early, it will be a long meeting for those listening and watching for Overeem alone will be in for probably 90-120 minutes of stuff they have very little interest in. The actual full agenda in PDF format can be read here. Some familiar names will be getting their licenses, likely with nothing much to report as guys like "Sugar" Shane Mosley, Mike Brown and Mark Hunt are on the agenda because they're over 35 and have to take this extra step for licensing as a precaution. There's also a lot of Nevada boxing camps looking for state grants to travel to competitions that have to be gone through as well as assignment of officials to fights and events. So a lot of business before Overeem's turn comes up. We'll have updates during the meeting and reaction to the decisions made during the meeting throughout the day.

Hybrid icing finds strong support at NHL GM meetings; red line reinstallation stalls ()

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Of all the ideas related to player safety in the NHL discussed at the GM meetings, the one with the best chance of becoming reality is hybrid icing. It has gained support in recent years. It was tested at the league's research and development camp in Toronto the past two years. And when the league's general managers broke into small groups Monday at their annual meeting, it had unanimous support among the seven GMs who discussed it, according to the Chicago Blackhawks' Stan Bowman. All 30 GMs will discuss it Tuesday. If it has enough support among the whole group, the GMs will recommended it to the competition committee. It would have to go from there to the league's board of governors for approval. "To me, it seems almost that there's no reason it wouldn't be supported," Bowman said. "We'll see maybe if there's something we're missing when we bring it to the bigger group, but you still have a competitive race for the puck. You're not eliminating injuries, but you're reducing the likelihood that guys will get hurt on those plays. It seems like there's a lot there."

Nick Diaz license suspended in Nevada, Commission prepares for disciplinary meeting

Not that this is some big surprise but a meeting was held today in Nevada to suspend Nick Diaz's license stemming from his failed drug test at UFC 143 this past Feb. 4, 2012, in Las Vegas. The meeting held today was more or less a formality and simply a way for the Commission to temporarily suspend Diaz's license while preparing for a disciplinary meeting later on. MMAFighting.com has more: During Wednesday's meeting, commission chairman Skip Avansino requested notes and minutes from the 2007 Nevada matter, as well as any related disciplinary information from other states in preparation of Diaz's upcoming hearing. The stage was also set for a possible defense that could include a retroactive request for a medical marijuana exemption, as Eccles noted a belief that "the question will come up" given Diaz's personal license for medical use in California. It's interesting to point out that Diaz could use his medical marijuana license in California has a defense for his failed test in Nevada. There's no real precedent for a matter such as this at present time so there's no discernible way to tell exactly what that will mean regarding potential discipline or lack thereof. All we know is that this is the second time Diaz has failed a drug test in Nevada and the Commission is going to attempt to punish him accordingly. Diaz's drug test failure marred an event that was already crawling in controversy, thanks to the main event bout going to a five-round decision finish that few were satisfied with. In fact, Diaz retired in disgust after the bout, proclaiming his dislike for the scoring system in place in MMA. His team, led by Cesar Gracie, immediately started campaigning for a rematch, so that didn't last long, of course. Jake Shields, a teammate of his, believes he'll rediscover his love for MMA during the suspension that is surely coming, whenever that may be. And for however long it may happen. Unless, of course, the retroactive marijuana medical exemption defense actually works. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for further updates to this story as they happen.

Nevada Suspends Nick Diaz's License, Prepares for Medical Marijuana Exemption Request

A temporary suspension of Nick Diaz's fighter license was issued during a Wednesday meeting of the Nevada state athletic commission, stemming from the positive drug sample he produced during the weekend of UFC 143. The suspension was requested by Nevada deputy attorney general Christopher Eccles, and unanimously approved by the commission until a follow-up disciplinary meeting can be scheduled. At that hearing, Diaz will have the opportunity to present a defense. He was not present at Wednesday's meeting. When he does sit before the commission, he will likely have to answer not only for his recent drug screening failure which saw him test positive for marijuana metabolites, but also for a previous failed screening back in February 2007, also for marijuana. At that time, he was suspended for six months and fined 20 percent of his purse. During Wednesday's meeting, commission chairman Skip Avansino requested notes and minutes from the 2007 Nevada matter, as well as any related information from any states in preparation of Diaz's upcoming disciplinary hearing. The stage was also set for a possible defense that could include a retroactive request for a medical marijuana exemption, as Eccles noted a personal belief that "the question will come up" given Diaz's personal license for medical use in California. NSAC executive director Keith Kizer recently told MMA Fighting that no fighter had ever applied for a medial marijuana therapeutic use exemption, but that the commission would take the same steps as normal when considering the request. In addition to as much as a one-year suspension, Diaz faces the possibility of a financial fine, as the commission asked to receive "full data" on his purse as well as any bonuses. Diaz earned a salary of $200,000 for the bout, but likely received undisclosed bonuses that can also be affected. Diaz has hired Las Vegas attorney Ross Goodman to defend him during the upcoming hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.

Strikeforce's 'Cyborg' Santos to appeal suspension at April 9 CSAC meeting

Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos will appeal her one-year license suspension at the California State Athletic Commission's next meeting on April 9. CSAC Executive Director George Dodd confirmed the news on Monday with MMAjunkie.com, though he said the agenda for the meeting hasn't been set. Santos was suspended less than a month ago after her victory over Hiroko Yamanaka at "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal" when a pre-fight drug test came back positive for steroid metabolites.

Alistair Overeem / Nevada State Athletic Commission Meeting Live Updates

We'll have live updates from the Nevada State Athletic Commission meeting at 6 p.m. ET. The rumors surrounding Alistair Overeem will be put to rest one way or another at that time. For days there has been speculation that Overeem was going to be pulled out of the UFC 141 main event against Brock Lesnar due to a licensing issue. There have been rumors of injury which have been shot down and even talk of some sort of pre-fight random drug testing issue. But everything remains rumor and hearsay at this point. Overeem is one of three fighters currently on the agenda looking to secure his license, but the other two (Vladimir Matyushenko and Keith Jardine) are over 35 and it is NSAC policy for fighters over 35 to not get the "rubber stamp" on their license applications and instead go through this process. It's still a mystery what exactly Overeem is doing on the agenda. So again, check back in at 6 p.m. ET as we bring you live updates from the meeting. SBN coverage of UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem

Report: Tim Sylvia vs Andrei Arlovski IV planned for Nov. 5 in Moline, IL

You know the old saying folks, don't shoot the messenger. Former UFC Heavyweight Champions Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski are apparently in talks for a fourth meeting, this time under the ProElite banner on Nov. 5, 2011, in Moline, Illinois. Cage Potato brought word of the possible match-up earlier today. The original Sylvia vs. Arlovski trilogy took place under the UFC banner back in 2005-06, with "The Maine-iac" getting a 2-1 advantage. Unfortunately the third (and what at the time was believed to be the final) meeting of the two was a five-round snoozefest that Sylvia won on points. And things haven't exactly gotten better for either fighter. "The Pitbull" recently snapped a four-fight losing skid, one that included three violent knockouts, to stop Ray Lopez as part of the resurrected ProElite card last month in Hawaii. Sylvia, who continues to struggle with his weight, was flattened by Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 castaway Abe Wagner last January for Titan FC before rebounding with a technical knockout win over Patrick Barrentine on the regional circuit. In short, both fighters look like a shell of their former selves and a fourth meeting seems unlikely to change that perception no matter the outcome. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information and details on this pending bout, as well as ProElite's debut in Moline, as they become available.
