Vinny Magalhaes Claims $100,000 Ebay Sale of M-1 Challenge Belt

Vinny Magalhaes is done fighting for M-1 Global, but he apparently still managed to use the company to make a hefty payday. The man still recognized by M-1 as light heavyweight champion put his title belt for sale on EBay. As of Tuesday morning, the page was gone, as Magalhaes announced over Twitter he had sold the gold for $100,000. On Monday's edition of The MMA Hour, Magalhaes, who is waiting out a period in which M-1 can match contract offers from other promotions after a bitter parting of the ways, explained his motivations for putting the belt up for sale. "Somehow I cannot fight until September or so, so I may as well just keep myself relevant by making news," he told MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani. Most fans remember Magalhaes for his stint on the "The Ultimate Fighter 6," where he lost to Ryan Bader in the season finale card. Since then, Magalhaes, a Rio de Janeiro native and ADCC gold medalist, has gone 7-1. That includes all five of his victories in M-1, where he hooked on in 2010, with all of his wins coming via stoppage. The marriage between fighter and promotion came went south when a public war of words ensued between Magalhaes and M-1 representative Evgeni Kogan. Magalhaes claimed Kogan was openly rooting for his opponent during Magalhaes' last M-1 fight. "I've never had a problem with M-1 as a company," he said. "They always paid me for the fights they were supposed to. My only problem is with Evgeni Kogan, which was a personal problem. He was at in my last fight, he decided to root against me, and since that day things haven't gone well." Magalhaes doesn't regret making his complaints with Kogan public. "I mean, when he rooted against me he didn't do it behind the scenes," Magalhaes said. "He made it public ... He said I was an unemployed gigolo fighter, what does that even mean, is he calling me a prostitute?" His contract expired at the end of December, but not without several hitches. "I have no obligations to fight for them." he said. "I had a contract to fight for them through January. They had a show in November, they didn't use me, they had a show in December, they didn't use me, and in January my contract expired." Because Magalhaes held the belt, though, the company had a 60-day window in which they could exclusively negotiate with Magalhaes, followed by a 120-period in which they could match any offer from another promotion. This means he won't be free to deal with other promoters without M-1's interference until July. But that's OK with him. "I've just decided not to talk to anyone for 120 days," he said. "So if there's no one to talk to, there's no offer, and if there's no offer, there's nothing [for M-1] to match. Sometime in July I can walk away and sign with whoever I want." In the interim, the Xtreme Couture fighter is keeping busy by helping train Chael Sonnen for his July rematch with Anderson Silva. Magalhaes confirmed to The MMA Hour that he has received death threats from fellow Brazilians for working with Sonnen, who has made no secret about his thoughts for the country. "It might just be some kid trying to be the tough guy on the Internet," said Magalhaes. "But nothing you think it actually might happen." It would seem inevitable for Magalhaes to return to the UFC. He welcomes the notion, and he says he would like another chance to fight Bader, who TKOd him in their bout. He makes it clear, though, that he's not specifically trying to troll Bader for a rematch. "I fought Ryan Bader, that's the only fight anyone remembers," he said. "Everyone says I got a glass jaw, I got dropped, but in reality, that's the only fight that I ever lost by TKO, that's the only fight ever. TUF finals, I've never been dropped or KOd oterh than that fight. Everyone says I have a glass jaw because of that fight, but that's the only one. I want to give payback to Bader because he's the one who forced me into that situation." "I won't walk into UFC and call out Bader. He's a top-six fighter right now. You don't want to walk into a promotion and start calling out people. But if I get two or three wins, maybe I can get a fight with him." Magalhaes, of course, know the perils of Ebay, so it remains to be seen whether the high bidder will actually follow through. "I don't know if these bidders are for real, if they're going to really spend $14,000 [the high bid at the time of the interview] on a belt that isn't worth not even a dollar, so it's up to them to pay that much. Maybe they're looking to pay that much because it's my belt not because its an M-1 belt."

BJJ Black Belt Vinny Magalhaes To Help Chael Sonnen Train For UFC 147

Chael Sonnen is dead-set on learning from his loss to Anderson Silva via triangle choke in the fifth round. Sonnen, who was winning the fight on all three scorecards before “The Spider” caught him and forced the submission, will be training with second-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Vinny Magalhaes, according to Magalhaes’ Twitter account. Forget about my last post about competing. Instead, I’m heading to Oregon to help the UFC MW (middleweight) Champ get ready for his title fight in Brazil. Referring to Sonnen as the champion is something Sonnen himself has done since falling to Silva, as he believes he won the title because he won the fight. Silva, of course, will enter the fight as the UFC middleweight champion. Magalhaes is currently a free agent after leaving M-1 as its champion because of a contract issue. He is a former runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter, and has won his last five fights. Silva-Sonnen 2 takes place in June at UFC 147 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sonnen’s decision to bring in someone with the credentials of Magalhaes shows that he does want to improve his game, and hopefully avoid another submission by Silva. Bernardo Magalhaes To Meet Henry Martinez At UFC On FX 3

Two men looking for their first win in the UFC will meet at UFC on FX 3 on June 8th. They have a fair amount in common - they both lost their only UFC bout to men much bigger than them. The news comes from FightBulletin.net: Australian based UFC fighter, Bernardo‘Trekko’ Magalhaes has revealed to FightBulletin.net that he will face Henry Martinez at UFC on FX 3. Magalhaes (11-2), the Cage Fighting Championship lightweight champion, dropped his UFC debut to Tim Means at UFC on Fuel 1 last month. Martinez (8-2), a Greg Jackson product, stepped in as a late replacement at welterweight to face Matt Riddle at UFC 143. Despite giving up a ton of size, Martinez was very competitive in the bout and lost by split-decision. He will now drop down to his natural weight class and face Magalhaes. The bout is expected to take place on the preliminary card. SBN coverage of UFC on FX 3

Vinny Magalhaes in negotiations to join UFC roster

It looks like the odds are increasing as far as the probability of Vinny Magalhaes returning home, at least professionally, after severing ties with M-1 Global in recent weeks. Magalhaes, who vacated M-1’s light heavyweight title to be a free agent, is apparently in talks to rejoin the UFC after a run to the Ultimate Fighter 8 final but prompt departure from the organization afterward. According to an interview on MMAJunkie Radio, Magalhaes is negotiating with a number of promotions with the UFC being amongst them and “definitely attractive”. Magalhaes also elaborated on his decision to abandon M-1 Global after one of the company’s chief officials was seen cheering for an opponent, as well as coaching him, saying, “The first thing I said when I heard about it was, ‘I’m never going to fight for these guys again. A few months later, that’s still my thought.” The 9-5 Magalhaes has won seven of his last eight fights with a decision defeat in the bunch. However, all of his victories involved some form of stoppage including five submissions, a testament to his accomplishments outside of the cage as a high-level BJJ practitioner. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC

After Strained Relationship, M-1 Champ Vinny Magalhaes Declares Free Agency

Champions generally don't leave their promotions while in the midst of a title reign, but that's exactly the route that Vinny Magalhaes is planning to take. As he tells it, the decision to part ways with M-1 has been a foregone conclusion for months, and the impetus came smack in the middle of his last match.Last October, Magalhaes was in the midst of successfully defending his light-heavyweight championship against Mikhail Zayats at an M-1 show in Phoenix when his manager Juan Sanchez heard M-1's director of operations Evgeni Kogan openly rooting for and instructing Zayats."Once that happens, I don't know how you can trust somebody," Magalhaes told MMA Fighting. As it turns out, he can't. And so on Tuesday, Magalhaes (9-5-1) declared his free agency, saying he's lived out the terms of his contract. While Sanchez told MMA Fighting that M-1 has a matching period, he doesn't expect them to equal any new deal. There's little doubt he'll be a hot commodity, as the 27-year-old has gone 7-1 since ending his first UFC run in April 2009. Magalhaes and Sanchez believe that the M-1 relationship had first been fractured before the Magalhaes-Zayats match. Before Fedor Emelianenko had been scheduled to fight Dan Henderson, Magalhaes had been invited to help him train in Holland. The offer came uncompensated, and Magalhaes had just started a new job at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, so to him, the decision was clear to stay home. Then, days before Magalhaes fought Zayats, M-1 head Vadim Finkelstein was quoted as saying he was going to invite Magalhaes to train with Emelianenko as he prepared for Jeff Monson. The pairing made sense as Magalhaes is a highly decorated grappler who had just captured first place in the Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling world championships. But no one from M-1 had ever approached Magalhaes about it, so when he was asked about it just days before his own fight, Magalhaes said he wouldn't do it without getting paid."I didn't think it was a big deal," said Magalhaes, who first came to prominence as a finalist on season eight of The Ultimate Fighter. "I didn't feel like I said anything bad. I just said if they want a service, they have to pay for it. But apparently Evgeni took it as an insult. It's not a package, like I fight for M-1 so I have to give them that service for free. It doesn't work like that. They only paid me to fight."Shortly thereafter, though, Magalhaes and Sanchez claim that they didn't even pay him for that. Magalhaes says he was pulled off two shows in late 2011, and communication between the sides was cut off aside from one contract extension offer."They don't have that many fighters," Magalhaes said. "It's not like they didn't have spots for me."M-1's Kogan declined to offer any comment when reached by MMA Fighting. But according to Sanchez, under the terms of the deal, Magalhaes' contract ended on Jan. 13, and on Tuesday, his exclusive negotiating period came to a close. "The No. 1 thing is to honor what you sign, and we've honored exactly what he signed for on the contract," Sanchez said. "The fact is, they didn't let us finish up the fights, but we've honored everything as far as time, and we haven't talked to any other organizations or taken any outside fights."That will change quickly. Sanchez plans to begin fielding offers immediately, and Magalhaes, anxious to fight, says he hopes to have something signed as early as the end of this week. The UFC is likely to be one of the interested parties, even though Magalhaes washed out quickly in his first run there. He says now that the opportunity came too soon. It was one he wasn't even looking for when it happened. Largely because of his friendship with Dan Henderson, Magalhaes was given a spot on TUF without ever trying out. When it came time to fight though, Magalhaes wasn't a complete mixed martial artist, relying on his overwhelming ground game to win. He eventually lost in the finals to Ryan Bader. That defeat served as a wakeup call about his future."I shouldn't have been in the UFC with the experience I had at the time," he said. "I didn't know how to fight. Three years later I can say, I had no idea what I was doing. I had no strategy. I would just go out there and hope that I would get taken down to the ground and maybe get a submission. But I had no strategy other than that."His journey since then has been about rounding out his skills, and it was with that in mind that he signed with M-1, hoping for frequent fights. In his four bouts, he earned four stoppage victories, two by submission and two by TKO. The chapter of his life apparently over, he'd like to return to the UFC, but is willing to listen to offers from other promoters, including Bellator. Anyone really, except for M-1."I've always been a competitor," he said. "It sucks for me to find motivation if I don't have a goal. Of course, I do have a goal. I know I'll fight, but for a while, it's been hard to fight motivation to be in the gym full-time. So hopefully, in the next few days I'm going to have an opponent somewhere. I'm really looking forward to that. In my mind, if I'm in the sport, I don't want to be just another guy. I want to be the best. I want to be fighting for a title. I want to be a champion."

UFC On Fuel TV: Tim Means Dominates Bernardo Magalhaes To Lopsided Decision

Tim Means defeats Bernardo Magalhaes by Unanimous Decision. The judges scored the fight 30-27, 30-26, and 30-26. Tim Means had size on his Brazilian opponent Bernardo Magalhaes and utilized it to cruise to a unanimous decision. For the entirety of the fight Means worked from range and battered Magalhaes with punches to head and body. It was the body shots that were truly the decider as Magalhaes crumpled several times to the canvas from the power of the strikes. Means looked far more comfortable on his feet working multiple punch combinations that opened up the face of his Brazilian opponent. Magalhaes was unable to find his range and resorted to throwing inaccurate overhands. He didn't fare much better on the mat. Means was too relentless from top position and continued to damage Bernardo's ribs. The judges score cards reflect how one sided the fight actually was. Means picks up a huge win and Bernardo will likely be relegated back to the regional circuit with this loss. SBN coverage of UFC on Fuel TV

Brookins Drops Bombs: UFC on FUEL TV Prelim Results

OMAHA, February 15 - The final fight on the UFC on FUEL TV: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger Facebook prelim broadcast at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Wednesday pitted two featherweights fighting out of Florida: wrestler Jonathan Brookins vs. BJJ ace Vagner Rocha. And after two early bouts that went to the judges, the crowd erupted after the free-spirited Brookins clocked a quick KO win. Despite being ground specialists, both men showed crisp striking in the opening minute, trading kicks, straights and targeted hooks that stunned one another. When Rocha caught one of Brookins’ kicks and went for a takedown, Brookins landed on top and quickly landed half a dozen powerful blows with his right hand that put Rocha to sleep at 1:32 of the first round. Brookins, the TUF 12 season winner, upped his record to 14-4, netting his first knockout win since his first pro bout in 2006; Rocha departs 7-3.Anton Kuivanen vs. Justin Salas Two debuting lightweights met in a closely-matched second fight of the night. Using his full arsenal of wrestling skills and strategic striking, Colorado’s Justin Salas bested the Estonian-born, Finland-based Anton Kuivanen by scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.Both men started by moving forward, the Finnish Kuivanen opting for more flashy kicks as the Trevor Wittman-trained Salas stuck to power punches. After a few struggles for takedowns, Salas finally scored with a huge one. Unable to pass into mount, he stood over Kuivanen, landing one blow from above before being tripped to the mat by Kuivanen’s long limbs. Bouncing back to their feet, Salas added in low kicks while Kuivanen scored with more shins to the body.In round two they both circled, and though only a two-inch reach differential separated the fighters, Salas struggled to get inside and found himself throwing far more strikes than Kuivanen and landing far fewer. Kuivanen connected a couple of times early on before being bulled to the fence by the former college wrestler.  As the chessmatch threatened to turn into a stalemate, Kuivanen turned up his standup and Salas answered with another trip to the wall, dragging Kuivanen down to the mat briefly.  Salas switched it up and controlled the center to start the third, coming out aggressively with fists that backed Kuivanen against the wall. “J-Bomb” used  momentum and speed to lift his opponent and dump him on his back against the wall. As he started to work his ground and pound, Kuivanen went for a heel hook and Salas appeared to be briefly in trouble. Salas worked his way out and as the two stood up, Kuivanen landed one kick, then traded low blows with Salas. Salas again shot in, trapping Kuivanen against the wall, where scored with one connecting fist. As Kuivanen became more aggressive, Salas used that kinetic motion to scoop Kuivanen into the air for yet another impressive slam to end the round. Kuivanen’s nine-fight win streak is snapped as he falls to 16-5; Salas’ pro record now stands at 10-3. Tim Means vs. Bernardo Magalhaes Two lightweight newcomers tested the Octagon in the night’s first fight, with Tim “Dirty Bird” Means earning the unanimous decision over Bernardo “Trekko” Magalhaes via scores of 30-27 and 30-26 twice The first round built steam, as the two UFC newcomers circled cautiously for the first minute or so. Means, with a 5-inch height advantage, tested his range but kept his distance, trying to avoid the BJJ black belt’s all-but-sure takedown attempts. The first one came two minutes in, and Means countered with a nasty knee – one of nearly a dozen he would land in the round.  With that, Means’ confidence grew, and he took the center of the cage, peppering Magalhaes with punches at will and grabbing him in the clinch to deliver knees – five in a row at one point. One knee dropped the intrepid Magalhaes, and Means followed him to the mat, but when “Trekko” reversed, Means quickly slipped away to the safety of his feet, and the end of the first round drew cheers from the half-full Omaha Civic Auditorium. Round two played out much like the recent Diaz vs. Condit did... in the eyes of Diaz' fervent fans, anyway . Means stalked his increasingly frustrated opponent around the Octagon, backing him against the fence and delivering punch combinations. With no luck on his feet, Magalhaes desperately dove for a takedown, earning another knee in the process, and Means again pulled himself out of harm’s way. “Come on,” yelled Means, as Magalhaes used lateral footwork to avoid damage but mounted no real offense on the feet. The goading eventually spurred a couple of wild overhand attacks from the smaller lightweight, and Means cut off his opponent into closer and closer quarters. Again dropped, Magalhaes curled up as Means delivered body blows, then returned to his feet, forcing Magalhaes to follow. In the third, Magalhaes became more aggressive with his takedown attempts, and paid for those as well. During two attempts at a single-leg, Means issued vicious hammerfists and elbows from the top, until his opponent let go of the hold. Exhausted or out of game plans, Magalhaes stayed on the ground, and several times had to be directed by the referee to stand up. At the end of the fight, the bloodiest Magalhaes again returned to the ground, this time of his own accord. The Brazilian-born, Aussie-based Magalhaes’ record falls to 11-2 with the loss, while Means returns to New Mexico with a record of 17-3-1.

Report: Newcomers Bernardo Magalhaes and Yoislandy Izquierdo to Meet at UFC on Fuel 1 in Omaha

A pair of UFC newcomers have been matched up for a lightweight bout at UFC on Fuel 1. It will be Brazilian-born BJJ specialist, Bernardo Magalhaes, taking on Cuban native, Yoislandy Izquierdo on the February 15th card in Omaha, Nebraska. Izquierdo confirmed the booking on his Facebook page: Feb 15 I will be fighting ufc on fuel tv!!! More info to come. Despite his Brazilian heritage, Magalhaes has lived and trained in Australia for several years, coaching fighters at his TP Fight Team in Sydney. He has also competed extensively for Australia's top promotion, Cage Fighting Championships, winning their lightweight title in 2010 and defending it successfully this past June. Magalhaes was scheduled to compete for ONE FC in a super-fight against Martial Combat lightweight champ, Ole Laursen, in February, but he appears he bowed out of that match-up to make his UFC debut instead. Izquierdo was born in Cuba, but is now a resident of Hialeah, Florida where he trains at Young Tigers Federation alongside UFC bantamweight, Alex Caceres. Although Cuba is known for producing talented wrestlers, Izquierdo's background is in striking, having trained in karate and san-shou since he was a teenager and while serving time in Cuba's military. Since making his pro debut just two years ago, Izquierdo remains undefeated in six fights with three TKOs and one submission to his credit, and he's the current holder of the Championship Fighting Alliance lightweight title. The co-main event for the Brazilian show boasts Vitor Belfort against Anthony Johnson. Magalhaes, a Brazilian, has been competing around Brazil’s circuit for the past two years, earning his most recent victory earlier this month by split decision over Ismael de Jesus. Fabio Maldonado Draws Caio Magalhaes as New Opponent for UFC 142

Light heavyweight, Stanislav Nedkov, was one of the several fighters to drop off January's UFC 142 card last week, although Nedkov was dealing with a visa issue, and not an injury. Now, the UFC has wrangled up a replacement for him to square off with boxing specialist, Fabio Maldonado, and will be a fellow Brazilian and Nova Uniao representative, Caio Magalhaes. The UFC's Brazil office tweeted the news yesterday: ufc_brasil UFC Brasil Oficializando: @MaldonadoMMA enfrenta o estreante Caio Magalhães no #UFCRio2 - típico duelo Striker vs. Grappler no Octógono. Vinny Magalhaes wants to leave M-1 Global not because of the company, but due to Executive Director Evgeni Kogan

Vinny Magalhaes is a guy that can so obviously tool every man, woman and child on the ground that it's borderline hilarious. Alright, well maybe not so much tool children on the ground -- that's more of a Penn State thing. Magalhaes' Brazilian jiu-jitsu is the closest thing the world will ever get to a real-life Game Genie. That's the greatest example I can possibly use to show his dominance in the jiu-jitsu world. It's like legally cheating. Besides, Vinny Magalhaes can't help it if he's the new reigning +99kg ADCC champion. He can't take back the six gold medals he snatched at the Rio de Janeiro State Jiu-Jitsu Championship Tournament, or the Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu Championship gold medal he has sitting on his stack of other gold medals he obtained from being the American National Jiu-Jitsu Champion. Vinny can't help that he's dominant in jiu-jitsu. He suffers from an illness known as 'tapticulous,' symptoms include forcing other people to tap if they unfortunately venture into his vicinity. It's highly contagious. Vaccinate your children this Winter. We caught up with Vinny Magalhaes this week, and he told us that he does intend to leave M-1 Global, but it's not due to the company. In fact, the company has treated him quite well. However, it's the executive director, Evgeni Kogan, that he just can't handle anymore.

Vinny Magalhaes Upset With M-1 Global, Looking for Way Back to UFC

Friday night's M-1 Challenge 27 bout didn't go as planned for Vinny Magalhaes. He was given a very tough fight by Mikhail Zayats where it appeared that his inability to get and keep the fight on the floor would be his undoing. Zayats was able to land solid combinations, using a stiff leg kick to either open or close the flurries. Eventually Vinny was able to land a head kick that dropped Zayats and follow up with a flurry of punches to get the stoppage to retain his M-1 light heavyweight championship. A time of celebration for Vinny turned into a time of frustration upon rewatching the fight. He took to Facebook to vent: After rewatching the whole fight, i just realized that everytime i fought for M-1 against a Russian fighter, i was the hand picked guy... i mean, i am assuming that after seeing one of the M-1 directors rooting for my opponent everytime he'd hit me, but not having any reaction when i'd hit him nor when dropped him. Thanks M-1, i appreciate your business, you can have your belt back. Two things: Vinny entered the cage as anywhere from a -400 to -500 favorite. He clearly wasn't "hand picked" for anything. He also was the favorite in his previous M-1 fight against Victor Nemkov. Some of his anger no doubt comes from M-1 acting as though he should train with Fedor Emelianenko for free. But it is very bad form for a promoter to actively root for one fighter over another if they manage both men. I'm sure the Russian based M-1 wants a Russian guy to win their title, but they need to hide it a little at ringside. Their failure to do so has Vinny upset and looking to get out of their promotion: @VinnyMMAVinny Magalhaes Hey @danawhite, how many more wins do i need? @ufc in 2012 for me?Oct 15 via Twitter for AndroidFavoriteRetweetReply M-1's behavior upsetting what may be their only marketable and recognizable fighter (outside of Fedor) is but one of many problems facing the promotion as they continue to look to make a name in America.

M-1 Challenge 27 results and recap for 'Magalhaes vs Zayats' on Oct. 14

M-1 Challenge 27, which aired from Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, last night (October 14, 2011), is officially in the books. It was a night of peaks and valleys with four very entertaining fights combined with one of the year's worst. In the main event of the evening, Ultimate Fighter season 8 finalist Vinny Magalhaes defended his title against Mikhail Zayats in a very entertaining back and forth affair. While both men were seasoned ground fighters, especially Magalhaes who was recently coming off a gold medal performance at the ADCC world grappling championships, the fight was primarily kept on the feet. Magalhaes was aggressive early, but he had some trouble with Zayats' technique and especially his leg kicks. He was wobbled on multiple occasions by some nasty kicks to the outer and inner thigh. When the champ took the fight to the ground, despite showcasing some flashy sweeps and passes, he was unable to secure any submissions as Zayats did a terrific job of escaping danger and hopping back to his feet. Just when the crowd was beginning to smell an upset, Magalhaes threw a right hand and then followed it up with a huge right head kick that clocked the Russian in the back of the head, leveling him. The champ followed up with ground and pound to score a TKO victory, the first he's ever truly secured with his stand-up skills.  The rest of the night featured some lightning quick finishes as well as a match that fans would have paid extra to see end 20 minutes earlier. When M-1 heavyweight champion Guram Gugenishvili was injured in training, the promotion kept rolling forward, offering an interim heavyweight title fight between his original challenger Kenny Garner and undersized heavyweight Maxim Grishin. This fight was brutally bad. It had a few decent moments early with Garner tagging Grishin in the stand-up but they would repeatedly clinch along the ropes where Grishin has truly refined his "grab the ropes to stay upright" technique. Both men were pretty exhausted by the midway point of round two and then the fight was marred by some pretty awful reffing. Three times the ref stopped the fight because a fighter had gotten too deep under the ropes on the ground but only once was the match resumed in the center of the squared circle at the same position. That's horrible inconsistency.  Also, Grishin was gassed so badly he was taking about 15-20 seconds just to get to his feet. That should have either cost him a point for stalling or the ref should have stopped the fight via TKO due to exhaustion. That was unfair to Garner to allow nearly 1/12 of the round to slip by because a man can't get to his feet. The fight finally ended in round five after some close submission attempt by Grishin put him in bad position and he tapped to strikes after repeated hammer-fists from Garner. When they showed M-1 heavyweight champion Guram Gugenishvili in the crowd, he was guffawing uproariously. He shouldn't expect much trouble from either man in the near future. The other three fights were fantastic, each ending in quick succession, less than three minutes combined.  Daniel Madrid got off to a terrific start working his stand-up and then quickly slapping on an armbar to score a completely overwhelmed Tom Gallicchio just 48 seconds into the first round. Keep an eye on Madrid. The kid looks like a legit welterweight prospect. Swiss welterweight Yasubey Enomoto kept things rolling by holding his own in the striking against Josh Thorpe before latching on a triangle choke the instant the match went to the ground. He really put some torque into it and forced a tap in just over a minute. Russian prospect Arthur Guseinov, on the heels of one of 2011's most memorable knockouts in his last match, appeared to be trying to top it early before being taken down by his American opponent, Eddie Arizmandi. When Arizmandi's inverted triangle choke failed, Guseinov immediately latched onto a leg and went to work with a heel hook that forced another quick tap. With the win, Guseinov showed that he can be dangerous both on the ground and on the feet. All in all, it was a pretty fun night of fights. The attendance appeared to be abysmal and media will likely be talking more about the horrendous Garner-Grishin fight and the lousy refereeing/ commission oversight than anything. One issue that really stood out in this show was a whistle to signal that there were 10 seconds remaining in the round. In both fights that actually made it out of the first round, fighters dropped their guard and began walking to their corners when the whistles blew. How hard is it to get some wooden blocks and clap them? That was very dangerous and rather incompetent on the commission's part, or whoever's job it is to give the 10 second warning. So did you tune in tonight, Maniacs? What stood out to you most? Did the good in terms of entertaining fights and exciting finishes make up for the one bad match and some lousy refereeing? Let's hear it!

Watch Vinny Magalhaes’ consciousness disrupting headkick from tonight’s M-1 Challenge

Just when you thought it was safe to walk around Phoenix, Arizona, Vinny Magalhaes gives us one more reason why no one should never expect to get their head kicked off their shoulders. I used a double negative there to pay tribute to the late 80s Nickelodeon gameshow 'Double Dare.' In retrospect, I would have beat that obstacle course like it owed me money -- because technically it would have. Check out this head kick KO from Vinny Magalhaes that just illustrates his opponent was never a fan of Wu-Tang Clan, otherwise Mikhail Zayats would have 'protected his neck.' [Source]

M-1 Challenge 27: ‘Magalhaes vs. Zayats’ Results & Recap

Lest we all think our MMA universe consists of only the UFC and Bellator, M-1 Challenge stepped out of the shadows for another installment on Showtime.  Dubbed M-1 Challenge 27: “Magalhaes vs. Zayats”, the event was originally supposed to be headlined by a title fight between heavyweight champ Guram Gugenishvili and challenger Kenny Garner.  But an injury put that bout on the shelf, so vying for the interim title of the Russian-centric promotion would be Garner and Maxim Grishin, while champ Vinny Magalhaes would be defending his light-heavyweight crown against Mikhail Zayats.  Given these pairings, plus three others featuring hungry fighters (literally – these guys were plain old starving), you just knew the event was going to be worthwhile.  So how did it go? The cards were stacked against Daniel Madrid in his match-up against Tom Gallicchio.  Gallicchio was the winner of last year’s M-1 Challenge ‘Americas’ welterweight tournament, he had over twice as many fights under his belt, and he had spent the last few weeks training with Dan Henderson et al. at Team Quest.  But Madrid made the most of his promotional debut, knocking the head of “Da Tank” back with a punch in the opening seconds of their bout, and when Gallicchio put him on the canvas with a takedown, Madrid deftly swung into an armbar from the bottom.  Gallicchio attempted to slam his way out but he was caught, and he tapped out at 48 seconds into Round 1. Swiss fighter Yasubey Enemoto must’ve wanted to outdo Madrid, because he too nailed a quick and smooth submission against opponent Josh Thorpe.  After a few seconds of back-and-forth overhand rights and crosses, Thorpe abruptly changed levels and easily took his foe to the mat.  But as soon as they went horizontal Enemoto was working his magic, trapping Thorpe’s arm and head with his legs and cinching on a tight triangle choke.  Thorpe tapped at 1:07 of the first round. Arthur Guseinov introduced himself to American viewers by decapitating Tyson Jeffries with a spinning backfist at the last US edition of M-1 Challenge.  Tonight, he was just as impressive, although he went in the other direction with his finish.  Taking on local boy Eddie Arizmendi, Guseinov came out winging a spinning back-kick, then attempted a throw.  The two scrambled, and once the Russian got on top he snagged Arizmendi’s foot and fell back into a heelhook.  This time the finish came at 50 seconds into the first round. Garner’s best work comes when he’s swinging wildly.  So it was that in his interim title match against Grishin, he scored early on with the kind of punches that would’ve made a windmill proud.  But Garner tired soon after, and when he began leaning into the Grishin, forcing him to carry his substantial 255-pound frame, the Russian grew exhausted and lethargic as well.  Round 2 saw Grishin take control with a takedown, a visit to mount and a close armbar attempt at the bell.  Unfortunately, that effort returned only briefly in the fourth round, where again Grishin got Garner down and went for an armbar and triangle choke.  The rest of the bout was ugly, though, with Garner and Grishin engaged in the sloppiest heavy-breathing festival ever.  Making matters worse was the referee, who flubbed a timeout when a fighter was fouled, messed up two restarts when the fighters slipped under the ropes, and even began a round while a cornerman was still in the ring cleaning up spilled water (!).  The end mercifully came when Garner got side-control and pounded on the Russian’s face, eliciting a tap out at 4:07 of Round 4, but I wouldn’t call Garner’s win a “victory” as much as I’d call it “meh”. How good is champ Magalhaes at jiu-jitsu?  So good, the Abu Dhabi champ can submit people just by looking at them (okay, not really).  Yet all that grappling prowess means nothing when your opponent can dodge most of your takedowns, escape trouble on the ground, and chop your lead leg with kicks that would fell a tree, all of which was the case with challenger Mikhail Zayats.  Magalhaes did have his moments when it came to man-hugging – in Round 2 he nailed a trip and landed directly into mount – but throughout it seemed Zayats was going to beat the TUF veteran to a pulp.  That is, until Magalhaes switched things up and threw an out-of-nowhere high-kick that clubbed Zayats in the neck and left him stunned and on all fours.  The champ wasted no time following up with punches, and the referee jumped in at 1:13 of the third round. Results: -Vinny Magalhaes def. Mikhail Zayats via TKO (Punches) at 1:13 in Round 3 -Kenny Garner def. Maxim Grishin via Submission (Punches) at 4:07 in Round 5 -Arthur Guseinov def. Eddie Arizmendi via Submission (Heelhook) at :50 in Round 1 -Yasubey Enemoto def. Josh Thorpe via Submission (Triangle Choke) at 1:07 in Round 1 -Daniel Madrid def. It didn't come easy, but it did come in spectacular fashion, as M-1 Global light heavyweight Vinny Magalhaes scored a third-round stoppage of impressive challenger Mikhail Zayats. M-1 Challenge 27 Results: Vinny Magalhaes Retains Belt with Third-Round TKO

Filed under: M-1 Global, NewsIt didn't come the way most expected, but M-1 Global light-heavyweight champion Vinny Magalhaes successfully defended his championship, scoring a third-round TKO at 3:13 of the third round. Magalhaes, a jiu-jitsu star who just last month won the gold medal at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club submission wrestling world championships in his weight class, came into the fight with seven of his eight career victories by way of submission. And though he threatened at several moments of the fight, the end came after he slammed opponent Mikhail Zayats with a head kick, then finished him with ground strikes to force a referee stoppage. It was the fifth straight win for Magalhaes, who is now 9-5-1. Zayats had his moments, particularly in the standup, where he nailed Magalhaes with a series of leg kicks throughout the duration of the bout. But Magalhaes came alive in the third to pull out the win in the main event of a show held at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix. In an interim heavyweight championship fight, Kenny Garner outlasted Maxim Grishin in a fifth-round submission due to strikes. It was a bout that saw both men battle through exhaustion before Grishin could take no more with just 53 seconds left in the five-round affair. The fight was somewhat marred by some bizarre problems, including a shortened round when the ringside clock operator did not heed the referee's timeout signal, referee positioning errors on restarts from under the ropes, and Grishin's near-refusal to get back to his feet near the end of round four. Amazingly, Grishin nearly came back to win, nearly locking Garner in an armbar before Garner pulled free and blasted his way tot the victory. Garner (8-3) is expected to next face current heavyweight champion Guram Gugenishvili, who injured his elbow just last week. Gugenishvili is undefeated at 11-0. The other three main card fights all ended in a flash. In the opener, Daniel Madrid defeated Tom Gallichio via armbar in just 48 seconds. Then, Yasubey Enomoto topped Josh Thorpe with a triangle in 67 seconds, and not to be outdone, Arthur Guseinov finished off Eddie Arizmendi with a heel hook submission in just 50 seconds. Main Card Results Vinny Magalhaes def. Mikhail Zayats via TKO (strikes) - Round 3 (1:13) Kenny Garner def. Maxim Grishin via submission (strikes) - Round 5 (4:07) Arthur Guseinov def. Eddie Arizmendi via submission (heel hook) - Round 1 (0:50) Yasubey Enomoto def. Josh Thorpe via submission (triangle) - Round 1 (1:07) Daniel Madrid def. However, the only thing you need to know is Nika is the hottest ring girl that you've never heard of (she's single) and before Magalhaes trains Fedor for his upcoming bout against Jeff Monson, he wants to get paid first. Brian Hemminger of MMAMania had a candle-lit and intimate one-on-one with Vinny Magalhaes to clear the rumor that he will temporarily relocate to Holland to train with Fedor. Vinny stated that he would train The Last Emperor, but the dude needs to eat. Specifically, he wants to be compensated for leaving his job at Xtreme Couture since he has to deal with rent -- and all the rest of life's misfortunes. Well, besides the kid, that's not necessarily a misfortune. I mean, you know -- depending on what philosophy you subscribe to. "I've been asked this question a couple times today, nothing actually came up to me yet, I've just heard rumors like the head of M-1 he talked about bringing me to Holland to train with Fedor. That happened before too. My manager tried to negotiate with them and at first they agreed to come, blah, blah, blah but then when it was time for me to go, they said, "A lot of guys will train with Fedor for free just because he's such a legend," but I was like, "I can't go three weeks, not working. I have to pay bills. My son was 2-3 months old at the time. I couldn't train there for free," so I ended up not going." "So this time, it's gonna be the same way. If they're not gonna pay for me to be there, then I'm not going. It's not like I'm all about money, but if I'm not going to be working at Xtreme Couture, I'm not going to be holding my classes, I'm going to be leaving my family and my wife doesn't work so I want to support my family. I have to be compensated. You know, hopefully we can negotiate how that's gonna work. If they decide not to pay me, then I won't go." Personally, Vinny Magalhaes and I go way back. Far enough for me to repeatedly tell the same boring story that you've undoubtedly heard throughout the years. To make up for me publicly 'blowing his spot' unintentionally, I will follow him on Twitter and never unfollow -- starting right now. See, I told you so. [Source]

Vinny Magalhaes to Help Train Fedor Emelianenko? Not Unless M-1 Pays

Earlier this week I shared the word that M-1 was planning to bring grappling champion Vinny Magalhaes in to help train Fedor Emelianenko for his bout with Jeff Monson. MMA Mania's Brian Hemminger recently sat down with Magalhaes and the subject came up. Vinny made it very clear that he has no intention of helping out unless the Russian's team pays him for his time. From the interview: Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): There's a report that came out today and I've read rumors about this in the past as well that there's the possibility of you helping train Fedor for his fight with Jeff Monson. Is that something that you're planning on doing after your title defense? Are there plans in the works? Vinny Magalhaes: I've been asked this question a couple times today, nothing actually came up to me yet, I've just heard rumors like the head of M-1 he talked about bringing me to Holland to train with Fedor. I couldn't train there for free," so I ended up not going. So this time, it's gonna be the same way. If they decide not to pay me, then I won't go. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): Yeah, that makes a ton of sense. Who would want to put everything on hold to go offer your services for free when you have those responsibilities? Vinny Magalhaes: Yeah, that's the thing. They say to train with him would help me and everybody out. It's not like I don't have a good training camp in Vegas. It's not like I'm doing something with Fedor because I need to. It's not for me, it's to help somebody out. Of course, I feel like he's a legend and a lot of people basically train with him but like, I'm gonna be just coming out of a fight so it's not like I'm going to need to be training. It's not for me, it's for him. I'll definitely need to be paid or I'm not going. Good for Vinny. There's no reason to offer valuable services for free simply because Fedor is a legend. If they want his help, they can pay for it. Make sure you go read the full interview at MMA Mania.

Vinny Magalhaes, Mikhail Zayats on weight for M-1 Challenge 27 in Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ --The M-1 promotion moved one step closer to their Arizona debut with a successful weigh-in Thursday night in North Phoenix. All fourteen fighters booked for M-1 Challenge 27 stepped on the scales before a crowd at the Metro Sportz Bar. Both main event fighters Vinny Magalhaes (8-5) and Mikhail Zayats (14-5) made weight for their scheduled five round light heavyweight title fight. For Magalhaes the bout will be his first defense of the M-1 Global light heavyweight belt. A former Ultimate Fighter Season eight finalist, Magalhaes has won six of seven bouts outside of the UFC since his 2009 release from the promotion. The 27 year old Magalhaes recently added to his grappling resume with a win at the ADCC 2011 championships in September. A former middleweight prospect Zayats is fresh off a highlight reel TKO of Malik Merad (11-8) at M-1 Challenge 25. Zayats, a Russian striker, has won four straight bouts dating back to June 2010. In the heavyweight co-main event both Maxim Grishin (11-5) and Kenny Garner (7-3) made it below the 265 pound limit. Grishin was booked for the fight with Garner on one week's notice after four star heavyweight prospect Guram Gugenishvili (11-0) was sidelined with an elbow injury. A Russian fighter Grishin steps into the ring with a four fight win streak. Garner, a 25 year old big man, is 2-0 on the year. Grishin and Garner will battle for the M-1 Global Interim Heavyweight title with the winner booked for a possible bout with Gugenishvili.M-1 Challenge 27 is scheduled for Friday October 14th from Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix. The five fight main card will air live on Showtime at 11:00 p.m. EST/PST (Delayed on the West Coast).M-1 Challenge 27 Magalhaes vs. Zayats weigh-in resultsPhoenix, AZVinny Magalhaes (204) vs. Mikhail Zayats (205)Maxim Grishin (220) vs. Kenny Garner (255)Eddie Arizmendi (185) vs. Arthur Guseinov (186)Tom Gallicchio (170) vs. Daniel Madrid (165)Yasubey Enomoto (168) vs. Joshua Thorpe (166)Ryan Crouch (158) vs. Fredrik Lumpkin (156)Mike Chavez (168) vs. Joe Martinez (170)

Grappling King: An MMAmania interview exclusive with M-1 champion Vinny Magalhaes

Vinny Magalhaes has come a long way since a rough 0-2 stretch in the UFC. The finalist for season eight of The Ultimate Fighter has gone 6-1 in the last two years since his release from the world's largest MMA promotion and has found a home teaching Brazilian jiu-jitsu at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. In 2011 alone, he's gone 3-0 with three finishes and then to top it all off, he took first place in the 99 kilogram division in the Abu Dhabi Combat Club submission grappling world championships, the most prestigious jiu-jitsu tournament in the world which is held every two years. Just three weeks after winning the grappling title, Magalhaes is set to defend his M-1 light heavyweight title against scrappy Russian Combat Sambo practitioner Mikhail Zayats tomorrow night (October 15, 2011) at M-1 Challenge 27 in Phoenix, Arizona Despite still in the process of cutting weight, Magalhaes spoke with MMAmania.com today about his ADCC experience, his upcoming fight against Zayats and he addressed rumors of him being asked to help train Fedor Emelianenko for his Jeff Monson fight. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): Thanks for speaking to me on the day of your weight cut, that was very generous of you considering I know you had about 20 pounds to lose as of this past Monday. Vinny Magalhaes: Yeah, I've still got about four pounds to go. It's not so bad. I'm just a bit thirsty, that's it. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): You didn't train specifically for the ADCC this year, but you didn't do it for the last one either. Did that almost affect your confidence coming into this tournament. Were you just more relaxed, not having any pressure? Vinny Magalhaes: I would train maybe the opposite way and not training specifically. It really took the pressure away from me. I'm sure the guys who only do jiu-jitsu, it's all the pressure on them, especially the guys who have placed highly before. It's like, "I won before, and I'm expected to win, this is all I do." That's not me. It's like, I go there and think, "Maybe I'll get a medal, make a little extra money," but it's not any pressure on myself that I have to win. I don't feel like that any more with grappling tournaments. It definitely took the pressure away from me because I'm working on a different sport. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): Has your focus on training mainly MMA. Did that help at all for you in the ADCC? Are there any little things about the grappling for MMA that maybe gave you a boost for the tournament? Vinny Magalhaes: Well when I train MMA, I still work my jiu-jitsu and while it's a little bit different in styles of grappling, it's still grappling. The cardio for MMA is a bit more intense so I felt like I was in better shape than some of the guys competing there mainly because that was from my focus on MMA. I think that's what helped me the most for Abu Dhabi. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): I saw that you went out and worked with Eddie Bravo for a bit before the tournament and then you went and used some rubber guard in the tournament finals. Did that feel good to use something that you worked on and implement it? Vinny Magalhaes: Actually I just went to work with Eddie for just a day. I was supposed to work with him for two days but I just went for a day. The move I've been using now, I've been doing since 2008 so when I went to train with Eddie, it was just to make little adjustments, it's a move I've been using for three years now so it's not like it's something completely new or something I haven't tried in fights before either. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): Do you train often in a gi? I know you have your classes in Brazilian jiu-jitsu at Xtreme Couture. Are those all gi classes or no-gi? Vinny Magalhaes: My classes are all gi but I don't really train in my classes. It's a little like higher level, maybe brown belt or black belt that I roll with but it's nothing like I'm training every day with gi. Actually this last couple years I haven't really been training with the gi so most of my training is just focused on no-gi and MMA.  Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): I've noticed your stand-up has improved as well and I think it's from the work you've put in with Mark Beecher. He has a way of getting your striking to coordinate with your grappling better than other trainers. Can you talk about how working with him, it more combines the striking and grappling better than just working with a striking coach? Vinny Magalhaes: That's the reason why, it's not like there was no choice. That's exactly the reason why because of the way Mark works with MMA fighters. Just from working with the guy, he really loves his job and he understands grappling too so he understands the whole MMA game and that's why I decided to work with him. My striking is definitely getting better. It's not the level that I'd want it to be yet but it gives me enough confidence to trade a couple punches before trying to get them in the clinch and get a takedown or get it to the ground somehow. I've just gotta keep working on it. Mark the guy who's been helping me out with it and I feel it's a very good change from before.  I was working with just striking coaches and I worked with Shawn Tompkins. Shawn Tompkins was my first trainer in MMA and unfortunately, we were just not doing well together because he wanted me to be a striker and especially because I was coming from a jiu-jitsu background and just trying to turn me into a striker was not working. That's why I decided to make the change and start working with Mark. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): Do you feel that coming into this fight with Mikhail Zayats, he's a well-rounded Sambo guy but all his fights seem to go to the ground. I think you've mentioned that a couple times. Do you feel that you could potentially have a striking advantage against hiim? Vinny Magalhaes: You know, I don't feel like either one of us has a striking advantage over each other. To be honest with you, he got his first TKO win like his last fight and that was also a TKO on the ground. His last fight only spent like 30 seconds standing. He just took the guy down right away then he got the TKO on the ground. Neither one of are known for being a striker. Neither one of us ever have a history of knockouts and knockdowns on our record so I think this fight will eventually go to the ground and then he could attack me. I think I could get a TKO in my favor, a submission in my favor or a decision in my favor. Somehow it will end up in my favor. I don't think either one of us are going to turn this into a striking game. It's just not something I'd expect. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): I noticed that you were really impressed with Chael Sonnen not only with his offensive grappling against Brian Stann but also when he got up and started talking and had that awesome post-fight speech. Is that something that you admire, that he's able to combine all the facets of not only MMA but also add in the entertainment factor? Vinny Magalhaes: Well think about it. People want to watch WWE, they know it's fake but they like the whole like shit-talking. They like people getting mad at each other and I think Chael did a pretty good job. I think he went too far when he said he'd slap Anderson Silva's wife in the ass and I think it was crossing the line with that one but again, he's just being an entertainer. It's not like he really means it but whatever works for him, works for him. I don't think I could do that myself, I think it's fun, I thought it was great some of the things he said in the last fight. I laughed pretty hard. It's not like I admire him but I think he's funny. I'll be honest with you, he does a great job of trash talking to get more attention. I think that should become a bigger part of our sport. You have to, you can be a great fighter but sometimes being a great fighter isn't enough if you don't have a personality. I think that's what Chael's doing. He's a great fighter but he's also doing things that most guys aren't doing.  Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): It seems like, reading your interviews, listening to your interviews, that you seem much more focused on just winning right now and just getting a nice streak. That's more important to you than defending your title. You'd rather just get a lot of fights and keep winning. Is it really important to you to kind of get that rough start to your career behind you and get that record turned around. Is that more important to you right now? Vinny Magalhaes: It is man. I'll be honest with you, the belt was not part of my plans. When I first signed with M-1, it was all about the six fights they promised me and to go and get six wins. The belt came out sooner than I thought and I don't to sound rude to the promotion but it doesn't really mean anything to me. It doesn't mean more than the wins. I want to get wins on my record so having the belt, not so much. They could put me on the undercard fights and as long as I'm getting my wins and improving my record, that's what I care about most. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): Do you almost feel like you had a bit too much, too fast in your career? Do you wish it had started a little slower so your record would indicate your skill level better? Vinny Magalhaes: Some people blame the fact that I jumped to the UFC too soon but I don't think that was the reason I lost. I came from jiu-jitsu but always I should have focused on other areas of the game and I wasn't. I think that was my mistake. People can blame me for coming into the UFC too soon but look at Jon Jones. Jon Jones hadn't been training for long either and he jumped into the UFC and he's already the champion after just a few years. I'm sure he didn't go into the UFC just knowing wrestling. He went in knowing like everything, wanting to be great at everything and he got better, working on getting better in other areas and that's something I wasn't doing at first. I was just taking fights because I thought people would just take me down and I thought I would have the advantage on the ground and would only submit people and it would work out that way. Most of the times, they wouldn't take the fight to the ground, they'd just jab and try to keep the fight standing or like Ryan Bader. He's a wrestler but all he wanted to do was stand and throw big punches, it was like a lottery game. He knew that if we went to the ground I would have probably submitted him. The big mistake I made was transitioning to the MMA game without working on the other areas. I didn't give myself a chance to become a good fighter. Other than that, I didn't have the right gameplan or the right mindset. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): There's a report that came out today and I've read rumors about this in the past as well that there's the possibility of it about you helping train Fedor for his fight with Jeff Monson. I couldn't train there for free," so I ended up not going.  So this time, it's gonna be the same way. It's not for me, it's for him. I'll definitely need to be paid or I'm not going. Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): One of my last questions, you've probably been thinking about this fight for a while now. Hell, you were training for this fight instead of the ADCC's this year so how would you like this fight to play out tomorrow night?  Vinny Magalhaes: There's no secret, at least for now. Of course, once I feel that I'm training to be a good striker, not just decent, but once I am I could keep the fight standing for a couple minutes and see how it goes. But for now, there's no seeing how it goes. My goal is to take this fight to the ground as fast as I can and try to finish there either with a TKO or submission. I just want to get the fight there, hopefully end it in the first round. Vinny would like to thank his sponsors Chipotle, Equalibryum, Xyience, OTM, X-Guard, Fasttrak Insurance, Hyena Muay Thai, Ethika and Hostility. Also, fans can check him out on twitter @VinnyMMA for daily updates on his training. So what do you think Maniacs? Can Magalhaes continue his momentum from earning ADCC gold and put a beating on Mikhail Zayats tomorrow night? Does he have what it takes to make a successful return to the UFC? Sound off! Ben Thapa contributed to this interview.

So far he's registered four straight MMA wins (all finishes), captured the M-1 Global light-heavyweight title, and recently won a gold medal at the prestigious Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championships. The grappling tournament acted as a weekend getaway as Magalhaes finished up his training camp for his first title defense, which takes place at Friday's Showtime-televised M-1 Challenge 27 event.
