It doesn't matter if people think Luke Rockhold is a Top 10 middleweight or not. The Strikeforce champion said he'll just go out there and take it, whether you want to give it to him or not....
Strikeforce champ Luke Rockhold believes his next opponent Tim Kennedy is a very worth opponent. On the other hand he doesn't hold Derek Brunson in quite the same regard.
Slick submission-specialist Ronaldo Souza had hoped to make his claim for a chance to win his Strikeforce middleweight title back from Luke Rockhold by beating opponent Bristol Marunde in convincing fashion last night at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey. While the 32-year old lived up to his expectations in terms of finishing Marunde off, turning in a solid performance along the way, it appears his plans for a crack at the champion will have to be put on hold due to injury.
Shortly after the bout’s conclusion “Jacare” revealed he’d hurt his left hand in the fight’s first round and was limited by the damage despite looking fairly sharp on his feet. X-rays have since confirmed Souza actually broke it in addition to his thumb, a fact he acknowledged earlier today on Twitter.
No specific turnaround time was mentioned but, with Souza sidelined for at least a few months, it looks as though Tim Kennedy should now be set for the next shot at Rockhold’s belt as had been expected.
Souza took Marunde out with a Rear-Naked Choke in the third frame of their main card clash, the twelfth submission win of the 15-3 Brazilian’s career. He has now won five of his last six scraps with the only exception involving the decision defeat to Rockhold.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ronald "Jacare" Souza is one step closer to reclaiming his belt.
The former Strikeforce middleweight champion picked up his first victory since losing the belt to Luke Rockhold and tapped out late replacement Bristol Marunde.
The fight kick off the main card of "Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey" at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. It aired on Showime following prelims on Showtime Extreme.
Well, Dana did say he would never fight in the UFC again so we can't call him a liar!
This could be a good addition to the Strikeforce roster assuming he can stay out of the troubles that have plagued him in the past. I am hopeful because Luke Rockhold could use a solid challenge.
In person, Luke Rockhold looks like a guy that knows the words to at least one Bone Thugs n Harmony song. He's not MMA's version of Johnny Cage, leave that to KJ Noons. Luke Rockhold is just a guy that hits people so hard that he breaks his hand over their craniums. Evolution never expected Luke Rockhold to exist. Otherwise, the human species would have developed stronger hands. Perhaps Luke is one of those mutants that appear once every 10,000 years that gives humanity a glimpse of what our species will soon evolve into. According to that explanation, in the future all humans will have 10-1 records and be Strikeforce middleweight champions. Finally, a future I can believe in. The Jetsons had it all wrong.
LayzieTheSavage caught up with Luke Rockhold shortly after we published the video of Keith Jardine's mom attacking someone who we thought was related to Luke Rockhold. It turns out that...well, maybe you should just listen to the interview below. Props to Ester Lin for the banner picture.

Luke Rockhold wants to face the UFC's best. So does Gilbert Melendez. Kid Nate asks 'why not have an annual MMA Super Bowl and let the best face the best?' Read it at MMA Nation.
Luke Rockhold tore through Keith Jardine in the first round on Saturday to defend his Strikeforce middleweight title. Then he asked for fights against the UFC's best.
Questions abound for tonight's Strikeforce events. Will Luke Rockhold retain his championship belt? Does Keith Jardine have a future at middleweight? Can Robbie Lawler get back on the right track or is his career on its last legs? As with most things, the answers lie...in fisticuffs!

Luke Rockhold vs. Keith Jardine
On Sept. 10, 2011, Luke Rockhold won a hard-fought, five-round victory over Ronaldo Souza at Strikeforce World Grand Prix: Barnett vs. Kharitonov in Cincinnati, Ohio, to become the Strikeforce Middleweight Champion.
Coming into last night's (Jan. 7, 2012) headline fight versus "The Dean of Mean" Keith Jardine, Rockhold was a perfect 7-0 in the Strikeforce organization.
Before his victory over "Jacare," Rockhold wasn't garnering a ton of media attention, largely in part to the fact he hadn't really fought any big mixed martial arts (MMA) names.
Last night in "Sin City," Rockhold made short work of Jardine, the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) standout, showing fans and pundits alike that he's for real.
After the jump, we'll take a look at what may be next for one of the few remaining Strikeforce belt holders, Luke Rockhold:
"Business as usual."
It's a phrase that will forever go down in mixed martial arts (MMA) infamy.
As Luke Rockhold and Keith Jardine prepare to duel for Strikeforce gold on Saturday, it was revealed that women's champion Cristiane (Cyborg) Santos has been suspended.
Tomorrow night is Strikeforce: Rockhold vs Jardine and I know what you're thinking: What's a Rockhold? But if Luke Rockhold keeps slinging soundbytes like he has over the past few days, people might actually start caring more about him. He's thrown poop at Keith Jardine and here he is talking Brock Lesnar down:
"I think he was just playing a role. I saw right through him. His confidence looked very ... it didn't appear real. Did you see him singing the rap country? When he started rapping along to the country song I was like ' what the hell is this guy doing?' I almost saw his lip quivering as he was walking into the cage. He just looked like he was playing a role. He was kind of believing his own hype that people were putting in his ear. I saw true confidence out of Overeem and a true fighter. Lesnar's what I thought. All the media and all you guys had Lesnar taking it. The fighters had Overeem. I think he brought a whole new audience to the sport. So I can't exactly say it's a negative. People really need to see who the true fighters are. Lesnar's not the best in the world. He just got the right matchups and the right fights."
He also talked himself up for a UFC title shot against Anderson Silva, which is quite adorable:
"UFC-wise -- anybody over there. I don't care; I'd fight anybody in the top 10. They say Anderson Silva's only got four fights left; I want to be one of those four fights. I want to get on that track. Whoever I've got to go through to get there, that's what I want. I'm not saying I want him right away, but I want one of those four fights. It's always been a dream to fight the best in the world; that's what I live for. I hate second place. I hate being second best. I want to challenge myself against the best in the world, and right now, all the highest-rated guys are in the UFC."
Yeah, let's wait and make sure you can paste a Keith Jardine before we get that crazy, OK? But still, bravo to Luke Rockhold for pulling some press. I don't know if it's him starting to say things or the media starting to pay attention, but by the end of this whole event people may actually know who he is.
Strikeforce will make its 2012 debut on Saturday from the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. The main event of the card will feature a Middleweight title bout as Luke Rockhold defends his title against Keith Jardine, who will be making his Middleweight debut on the card.
The fighters stepped on the scale earlier this evening at the HRH Lounge inside the Hard Rock.
The fighters will compete on Saturday, with the preliminary card beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET. The main card will begin at 10:00
Can I just get this out of the way: I'm so thankful Strikeforce is still around. If Strikeforce wasn't in existence we wouldn't be able to have these fascinating interviews with Strikeforce champions using MMA math to leverage title shots in the UFC.
You know what? They should just make an entirely new reality show focusing around the Strikeforce fighters. It can focus on all of the fighters that the general public doesn't know about and build the brand and the fighters like TUF did. There can even be built in rules, like if you win the title and defend it twice then you are granted the next possible title shot in your weight division in the UFC. Fighters from the UFC will be calling out the fighters from Strikeforce, there will be cross promotional fights and all the while human stories could be told outside the training and cage. Hopefully at the very least this show could get Tim Kennedy and Jacare more fights. Zuffa, you can email me Jason@MiddleEasy.com if you want to flesh out this sure fire hit show.
Now I will get off my TV show pitching soapbox. Watch this interview with Luke Rockhold explaining to LayzieTheSavage what he thinks his future looks like in the Strikeforce middleweight division, and what a good run of wins can do for his chance at Anderson.

Strikeforce champions Gilbert Melendez and Luke Rockhold remaining with the promotion was a key element of the promotion's new broadcast contract with Showtime.
The welterweights will be going to war inside the hexagon early next year, as a pair of Strikeforce prospects, Tyron Woodley vs. Jordan Mein, have been booked to square off against each other at the "Rockhold vs. Jardine" event on Jan. 7, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The promotion announced the match-up late yesterday.
Woodley, just two years into his mixed martial arts career, is already 9-0 with seven of those wins coming under the Strikeforce banner. His latest victory, a unanimous decision drubbing over Paul Daley back in July, was supposed to be the catalyst to bigger and better things for the American Kickboxing Academy product.
It wasn't. But squashing another prospect should do him some good.
Despite the fact that he's just 21-years-old, Jordan Mein has amassed a record of 23-7 since his professional debut back in June 2006. That includes a third round technical knockout win over Evangelista Santos in his Strikeforce debut back in September.
He's currently riding a six fight win streak and hoping to break into the big time at the expense of Woodley. Prospect pick-off time!
Strikeforce: "Rockhold vs. Jardine" is headlined by yep, you guessed it, Luke Rockhold and Keith Jardine, which is worth watching for no other reason than it might see "The Dean of Mean" become middleweight champion despite going 3-6-1 over his last 10 fights.

Strikeforce on Thursday made official its rumored Jan. 7 fight card at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas pitting Luke Rockhold against Keith Jardine.
The Strikeforce: "Rockhold vs. Jardine" fight card is starting to come together with today's addition of Robbie Lawler vs. Adlan Amagov and Muhammed Lawal vs. Lorenz Larkin for Jan. 7, 2012, at "The Joint" from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The five-fight broadcast will air live via Showtime at 10 p.m. ET on fight night.
First up on the docket is the return of Robbie Lawler (18-8). The "Ruthless" one is on a rare two-fight consecutive losing streak for just the second time in his illustrious 10-year career.
He'll be looking to get back into the win column against the dangerous Adlan Amagov (9-1-1), who fight fans may remember from the pounding he put on Anthony Smith at the "Challengers" event just last month.
Which one of these middleweights gets their licks in during what could be the final days of the Strikeforce promotion?
Joining them in "Sin City" is Muhammed Lawal (8-1), who rebounded from his 205-pund title loss to Rafael Cavalcante with a thunderous knockout of jiu-jitsu wizard Roger Gracie back in September.
Looking to dethrone "King Mo" is undefeated prospect Lorenz Larkin (12-0).
"The Monsoon" rained on Nick Rossborough's parade earlier this year at the Strikeforce Challengers 19 event, his fourth win of 2011.

A middleweight title fight between Luke Rockhold and Keith Jardine is official for a Jan. 7 Strikeforce show. Robbie Lawler and King Mo Lawal are also on the card.
Speculation has been running rampant as to exactly what is going to become of Strikeforce once its current contract with Showtime runs its course. The promotion has seen several of its champions move over to the UFC, leaving what many see as a shell of an organization.
Gone are Nick Diaz, Dan Henderson and Alistair Overeem and when Luke Rockhold defends his Strikeforce Middleweight title in January it will be against Keith Jardine, a fighter that has zero Middleweight fights to his name. In short,

Keith Jardine will likely meet Luke Rockhold for the Strikeforce middleweight title on Jan. 7, as “The Dean of Mean” makes his 185-pound debut to kick off 2012.
Strikeforce middleweight champ will put his belt on the line in early 2012 as expected but will not do so against Tim Kennedy, a deserving contender with success at 185 pounds who was unfortunately sidelined with a recent injury. Stepping in for Kennedy will be seasoned veteran Keith Jardine.
The 17-9-2 “Dean of Mean” will be making his divisional debut at the event after a slew of success at light heavyweight including wins over former UFC champions Forrest Griffin and Chuck Liddell. He is coming off a Draw against Gegard Mousasi in his first appearance under the Strikeforce banner.’
Rockhold Expected Kennedy in January
News of the bout was reported by MMAFighting, citing sources close to the event, but Strikeforce has yet to confirm the show or match-up on an official level.
Rockhold was last seen outpointing Ronaldo Souza in September to win the middleweight title. He holds an overall record of 8-1 with notable victories in the past against Jesse Taylor and Paul Bradley.

It seems as if Strikeforce will survive, at least based on some recent comments made by middleweight champion Luke Rockhold who is appears to be looking at defending his title for the first time since winning it with Tim Kennedy serving as an opponent.
Rockhold defeated Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza for the title back in September, claiming a decision victory. The American Kickboxing Academy student is currently 8-1, having won his last seven fights.
Kennedy, who served for years in the U.S. Army while simultaneously being a MMA fighter, defeated Robbie Lawler and Melvin Manhoef over this past year. He is 6-1 in his last seven fights with the lone loss coming at the hands of Souza.
“I think Tim Kennedy is out there, and from what I’ve been told, that’s probably my next fight,” said Rockhold, in a recent interview with Tatame. “Nothing’s official, but they told me to get into training camp and get ready. So, I’m thinking January I’ll be fighting.”
Rockhold is glad to be the Strikeforce title-holder and enjoys competing for the company, but he still has his sights on joining the UFC down the road.
“Like I said, nothing’s official,” Rockhold said. “I look forward to going to the UFC (one day). I think me, Kennedy and “Jacare” would be very well in the UFC.”

"I wasn't gun-shy at all. I got right back in [the gym] against a lot of good guys that hit hard. I was sparring with Luke Rockhold and King Mo getting ready for his fight. I feel I could have fought a while ago and I just wanted to take some personal time off and focus on some other areas outside of fighting. I'm anticipating coming back strong on the 24th ... I went back to my basics, jiu-jitsu class and just going back to where I started, learning all over again. I helped a lot of the Strikeforce guys in their training camps so I've been training for quite a while. Fighting Matt Hughes is a good comeback fight for me. I think the fans deserved this fight a long time ago and now we're getting the opportunity to do it."
Former UFC welterweight number one contender Josh Koscheck tells media members on today's UFC 135 conference call that he's ship-shape and ready to go in Saturday night's clash against former division champion Matt Hughes. "Kos" has been calling out the aging legend for quite some time and finally found himself paired off against the flinty farmboy after Diego Sanchez was bounced from the Denver card due to injury. But is this a fight that fans "deserved?" Or simply a good tune up "comeback fight" for one of the original "Ultimate Fighters?"
