LAS VEGAS (May 8, 2012) - Undefeated 19-year-old prospect Guilherme Bertholdo (6-0), the nephew of UFC Middleweight Champion and pound-for-pound great Anderson Silva, will look to extend his perfect run in Muay Thai's amateur ranks and move one step closer to turning professional when he faces off with Chris Lazaro (7-2) of Las Vegas, Nev. in a welterweight (147 pounds) matchup on the undercard of the Lion Fight Muay Thai VI: Schilling vs. Marcus II full-rules Muay Thai event at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Saturday, May 12, live on LionFightPromotions.com.

MMA is a sport that I eventually will focus on in the future but, for now, I want to sharpen my striking and compete in an all-striking sport."
Bertholdo said he is knocking on the door of gaining his United States citizenship and would like to eventually represent America as a member of the U.S. National Muay Thai Team.
"I am learning from my senior (training partners) how to conduct myself and perform like a true fighter, I am not attending college. Black House Team Nogueira is my college."
Bertholdo's opponent, Lazaro, is a 24-year-old member of Hard Knocks Muay Thai gym and student of Renzo Asparria, whom Lazaro has been training with for the last two years. The matchup with Bertholdo will be Lazaro's first since he sustained a broken thumb during training last year.
"I love this sport and I've been eagerly waiting to get back in the ring. That time has come now that I'm healed up and I'm looking forward to putting on a great show," said Lazaro, a technical fighter known for staying in the pocket with his opponent and throwing hard uppercuts.

LAS VEGAS - As a Las Vegas-based business co-owned by casino magnates Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, the UFC and its executives must be transparently clear when it comes to the legitimacy of their contests.
MMA website CagePotato.com recently learned that lesson the hard way when a satirical photo caption prompted a formal demand for retraction.
Yet UFC president Dana White has recently made it a point to announce via Twitter each week the betting lines for bouts on "TUF: Live." Is it a conflict of interest? White certainly doesn't think so.
Logistical problems with a planned UFC 147 show in a Rio soccer stadium have forced the move of the Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen rematch to UFC 148 in Las Vegas.
Leave it to the United Nations to go and muck up what could have been the biggest and most amazing fight crowd in the history of our sport. These guys can't even get something as simple as world peace correct so of course they would go and mess up something that could have been absolute magic for our sanctioned violence loving hearts. According to Dana White at the UFC 148 special press conference held in Brazil today, the Silva vs Sonnen rematch will not take place in a massive soccer stadium in Brazil and will now be hosted in Las Vegas on July 7th, 2012.
The United Nations has scheduled a huge conference in Brazil for the week of this fight and there is simply not enough hotel rooms or security available to host an event of this size at the time the UFC planned to bring this event to the country. According to Dana, Anderson was really upset that the fight was not going to happen in Brazil anymore and it took alot of talking, but Anderson finally agreed to take the fight in Las Vegas. During the press conference, Chael responded to the venue and location move with, "my plan was to come into your country, take your money and bring the belt back to America."
Las Vegas is considered "the fight capital of the world" so it is the next best location for a fight of this magnitude, but I can't help feeling a little bit bummed that we won't have another mega-dose of that same electric energy we experienced with UFC 142: Rio. Damn.
Leave it to UFC President Dana White to drop a bombshell on Twitter late at night.
That's exactly what he did tonight, though, when he announced that Alistair Overeem is officially out of the UFC 146 main event against Junior dos Santos on May 26, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. He will be replaced by Frank Mir.
Taking off to Atlanta!!!! May 26 th is now Mir vs JDS for the HW title in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand.
More on this breaking news in just a bit.
Official Press Release:
Las Vegas, Nevada – A new welterweight contender will emerge on Friday, June 1 at the Pearl at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas when rising stars Jake Ellenberger and Las Vegas resident Martin Kampmann lock horns in a pivotal five-round main event. Plus, a phenomenal season of The Ultimate Fighter® Live will come to an end as the UFC® crowns its next Ultimate Fighter with a six-figure contract to compete in the world’s premiere mixed martial arts organization. The
UFC heavyweight No. 1 contender Alistair Overeem will not face time in jail over a misdemeanor battery charge. Instead, Overeem was sentenced to 50 hours of community service and ordered to undergo anger-management counseling, in a report published by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Over New Year’s weekend, reports surfaced that Overeem shoved a woman at the Wynn Resort. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department issued a citation to Overeem.
There was no trial, and Overeem did not appear in court, as a deal between his attorney and the district attorney’s office was presented to the standing judge. The matter will be dismissed as long as the conditions are met.
Overeem is set to challenge UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos for the title at UFC 146 on May 26 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The incident happened just days after “The Reem” claimed the No. 1 contender position by defeating Brock Lesnar on December 30.

Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, 31, was sentenced in Las Vegas, Nevada court today to 50 hours of community service and anger management counseling for battery charges related to an incident in a Las Vegas nightclub. The top UFC heavyweight also received a suspended 90-day jail sentence. If the terms of today's sentencing are met, any follow-up punitive action will be dismissed.
The striker faced a maximum of six months in the Clark County Detention Center and not more than a $1,000 fine. Overeem must appear in court again on Las Vegas on September 26th.
The charges Overeem faced resulted from an incident that took place at the Wynn Las Vegas on January 2nd of this year. A woman alleges Overeem pushed her in the face, which caused her to "stagger back".
The former Golden Glory fighter was not in attendance at today's hearing. He was instead represented by his attorney, David Shesnoff.
Overeem was in attendance at today's press conference in Las Vegas promoting UFC 146. He faces Junior dos Santos on that May 26th fight card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the organization's heavyweight title.
LAS VEGAS - The UFC's international expansion has a new destination.
UFC president Dana White today said Macau, a special administrative region of China known for tourism and gambling, is expected to host a UFC event soon. Just how soon?
"Very soon," he told MMAjunkie.com following a UFC 146 kickoff press conference in Las Vegas. "It will happen this year."
Muhammed Lawal wasn't the only one to have his day in court today.
No, UFC heavyweight number one contender Alistair Overeem was also scheduled to appear in court in Las Vegas today, though he sent his attorney, David Chesnoff, to act in his stead in addition to waiving his right to trial.
"The Reem" was accused of shoving a woman at a Wynn Casino in "Sin City." He was charged with misdemeanor battery and faced up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Thankfully, it didn't come to that. The Las Vegas Review Journal brings word of Overeem's punishment:
Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight Alistair Overeem was sentenced to 50 hours of community service and to undergo anger-management counseling as the result of a battery charge stemming from an incident at a Las Vegas nightclub on New Year's weekend. ... He also received a suspended 90-day jail sentence. If the conditions of his community service and counseling are met, the matter will be dismissed. Overeem is to appear in court on Sept. 26.
Simple enough, right? An anger management class and 50 hours of community service or jail. Easy decision.
Thankfully, none of this will affect Overeem's upcoming heavyweight championship showdown against Junior dos Santos at UFC 146 on May 26, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The press conference for the event was held today, which "Demolition Man" was in attendance for in lieu of appearing in court. Get up to date on all that by clicking here, here and here.

The Ultimate Fighter Live Finale likely will take place June 1 at The Pearl at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com via email that the UFC has requested the date and venue.
In addition to the reality show's tournament finale, the event features a Jake Ellenberger vs. Martin Kampmann welterweight headliner.
The annual Independence Day weekend card in Las Vegas is scheduled for fireworks with an exciting middleweight matchup set for the event, as Rich Franklin is expected to take on Cung Le. Franklin will once again be fighting at middleweight after fighting between 195-205 pounds for the last 4 years. UFC 148 takes place on July 7th at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Franklin (28-6-1NC) has not fought since losing to Forrest Griffin at UFC 126 in February 2011. He was expected to face off against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 133 in August, but Nogueira withdrew to injury. Franklin was pulled from the event due to being unable to find a replacement opponent. He then underwent sugery for a torn labrum, forcing him out of action until later this year. As stated, Franklin has not fought at middleweight since defeating Travis Lutter at UFC 83 in April 2008. He then fought four times at 205 pounds, and twice at a 195 pound catchweight, going 3-3 during that span.
Le (7-2) made his UFC debut at UFC 139 in November, after having fought in Strikeforce for the previous four years. Le lost to Wanderlei Silva via 2nd round TKO, after having dominated the first round. Le will likely have to be given instructions to Las Vegas, as he has not fought away from his hometown of San Jose since 2004. The Taekwondo expert continues to have an interest in acting, with four films scheduled to be released in 2012.
UFC 148 takes place on July 7th at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and is headlined by the rubber match between bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.

The woman Alistair Overeem allegedly face-shoved on NYE weekend in Vegas now has her day in court:
A representative for the Nevada District Attorney's office told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Overeem's non-jury trial is set for March 27 in Las Vegas. Non-jury trials are the state's standard for misdemeanor charges. If convicted, Overeem faces up to six months in prison and a maximum $1,000 fine. Las Vegas defense attorney David Chesnoff will defend the fighter in court.According to the "Las Vegas Review-Journal," Overeem was cited by Las Vegas police on Jan. 2 when he allegedly pushed or shoved a woman in the face, "causing her to stagger back." Overeem wasn't technically arrested and instead was summoned to court on Feb. 21, when his trial date was set.
Alistair's side of the story as told second-hand by Dana White is that "some lady started yelling at him and swinging at him", which doesn't sound that surprising. Vegas is a city full to the brim of women willing to f*ck a troll for 150 bucks. What will they do to potentially land a six, seven, or even eight figure settlement? Pick a fight with a contender for the UFC heavyweight belt?

That's the problem with gangsters. You get rid of one, like Whitey Bulger, and five more pop up in his place.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White was roaming the streets of Manhattan yesterday to help promote his upcoming UFC on FOX 3 fight card, booked for the IZOD Center on May 5, 2012, in East Rutherford, NJ. The "Diaz vs. Miller" event is designed to bring live mixed martial arts (MMA) action to fans living in the five boroughs (and beyond).
True, the UFC still doesn't play in the "Empire State," but neither do the "New York" Giants.
Unfortunately for ZUFFA, parent company of the UFC, it's not because they don't want to, it's because they can't. As White explains, the "political crap" stemming from a longstanding beef with the "dirty guys" and "gangsters" from the Las Vegas Culinary Union, has had a ripple effect that reaches as far as the East Coast.
Those comments (via ESPN.com), after the jump.
"Why hasn't it happened? It's a lot of political crap. The union out in Las Vegas is the reason it hasn't happened as funny as that sounds. It has nothing to do with MMA or the UFC, it has to do with the union. My partners, the Fertitta brothers, own the fourth largest gaming company in the country and they're non-union and the Las Vegas union has been doing some dirty stuff. They're dirty guys. Gangsters! The culinary union in Las Vegas. The guys who run the culinary union in Las Vegas are dirty, dirty, dirty, dirty guys."
Ever since the state of New York imposed a ban on MMA in 1997, ZUFFA officials have been trying to somehow reverse it to hold an event in the "city that never sleeps." In fact, for the last four years, White, the Fertittas and several fighters on the UFC roster have been lobbying for the ban to be lifted.
They even took it took court.
The ban remains intact, despite the positive economic impact that a live UFC event would have on the state and surrounding areas. The UFC President has also expressed his desire to hold an event in the famed Madison Square Garden (MSG), stating that a show in the "world's most famous arena" would do very well monetarily for both the UFC and Manhattan.
So far, there hasn't been enough political pressure to get it done.

Lightweights Edson Barboza and Evan Dunham have agreed to meet at UFC 146 when the promotion returns to Las Vegas for its annual Memorial Day weekend card.
Twitter strikes again.
Jason Miller recently asked mixed martial arts (MMA) fans to bombard UFC President Dana White with requests to give "Mayhem" another fight inside the Octagon despite the pathetic performance he turned in against Michael Bisping at the Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 14 Finale back on Dec. 3, 2011, in Las Vegas.
Apparently, it worked. That's because MMAWeekly.com brings word that Miller has been booked to square off against C.B. Dollaway at UFC 146 on May 26, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a middleweight contest that will likely see the loser leaving town, pink slip in hand.
On his Twitter account, Miller is already vowing to show up a changed man:
"I won't gas. CARDIO. CARDIO. TIME TO TRAIN HARD. MEDITATE. ZEN. ... I won't let you down. #whateverittakes"
The good news is Miller was given his second chance. The bad news is the match-up isn't a favorable one.
Dollaway, of course, is the NCAA Division I wrestler with the ability to drag Miller to the mat and keep him there for 15 minutes. He'll have to dodge a few submission attempts, surely, but seeing as he's lost two fights in a row and his job is likely on the line here, don't be surprised to see him go back to his bread and butter.
Being exciting is one thing, remaining gainfully employed another.
Either way, both men are teetering on the brink and shall be quite fun to see who it is that fails to tip toe the line and goes flying off the edge into the dark abyss consisting of MMA outside the UFC.
Stay tuned!
UFC 146 is the promotion's annual Memorial Day weekend event scheduled for May 26, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The only bout booked for the card at this time is the event headliner, as Junior dos Santos is expected to defend his heavyweight title for the very first time against Alistair Overeem.

Uh oh. Looks like Alistair Overeem is going to have more legal troubles than just his money dispute with Golden Glory in the next few months.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting that Overeem has been charged with one count of misdemeanor battery for allegedly pushing a woman in the face “causing her to stagger back.” The alleged incident took place in Las Vegas on Jan. 2, two days after he beat Brock Lesnar.
Overeem has since retained “famed” attorney David Chesnoff to fight the charge. Commenting on the charge, Chesnoff said: “There are two sides to this story and we intend on vigorously defending this. Alistair maintains his innocence.”
If convicted, Overeem faces a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. He’s set to appear in court in Las Vegas on Feb. 21.
So far, no further details about the incident have come out, so it’s unclear what events may have led to Overeem pushing the woman if that’s what in fact happened. It’s also unclear if this situation could impact the timing of his title fight with Junior dos Santos.

The UFC is expected to bring back its popular UFC Fan Expo back to Las Vegas in July, coinciding with its annual Independence Day weekend pay-per-view.
Top UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem has been charged with one count of misdemeanor battery following an incident in a Las Vegas casino soon after his UFC 141 bout this past month.
According to the "Las Vegas Review-Journal," Overeem is slated to appear in court on Feb. 21, and if convicted, he faces a maximum of six months in county jail and a maximum $1,000 fine.
MMAjunkie.com had been unable to confirm the long-rumored incident in recent weeks.
Filed under: UFCUFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem has been charged with one count of misdemeanor battery for an alleged incident inside the Wynn in Las Vegas just days after his TKO victory over former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar on Dec. 30.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Overeem is accused of pushing a woman in the face, "causing her to stagger back," during an incident at Wynn Las Vegas at around 3 a.m. on Jan. 2.
If convicted of the misdemeanor battery charge, Overeem could face a maximum sentence of six months in the Clark County Detention Center and a fine of not more than $1,000.
Overeem has reportedly retained the services of attorney David Chesnoff -- a famed Las Vegas lawyer known for representing everyone from celebrities to pro athletes to poker players to alleged organized crime member. Chesnoff told the Review-Journal that Overeem was not arrested, "but was summoned to court."
"There are two sides to this story and we intend on vigorously defending this," Chesnoff added. "Alistair maintains his innocence."
The UFC has thus far declined to comment on the story, but Overeem's win over Lesnar did set him up to face Junior dos Santos for the UFC heavyweight championship at an as of yet unannounced event. There's no word on whether the court proceedings may delay that fight. Overeem is due in court in Las Vegas on Feb. 21. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
