Atlanta -- UFC welterweight Chris Clements spoke to the media on Saturday about his victory and UFC debut over Keith Wisniewski at UFC 145. Clements argued his punching power and attacks to the body were what made the difference, discussed the controversial stand-up by referee Fernando Yamasaki and talked the joy of making it to the UFC and winning in his debut.
You often hear about bouts being "striker vs. grappler", but they generally don't end up like that. The bout between Chris Clements and Keith Wisniewski most definitely was. Clements picked up a split decision victory over Wisniewski, taking two cards at 29-28 and 30-27 while Wisniewski took one 29-28 card. When it was on the feet Clements was totally dominant, hurting Wisniewski multiple times with an Alexander Shlemenko-like display of spinning attacks. It was another story when Wisniewski could get it to the ground though, with him advancing to mount twice and almost choking Clements out.
Clements opened the bout quickly with a leg kick and a glancing right. Wisniewski pinned Clements against the fence and got the takedown. He worked from side control against the cage and almost advanced to mount. Clements was able to land a back elbow that cut Wisniewski open, but Wisniewski continued to work on the ground, this time in half guard. Referee Fernando Yamasaki stood the fighters up when it appeared Wisniewski was definitely working. Clements got the best of the standup, landing a bunch of punches while Wisniewski tried to respond. Clements hurt him wish a spinning back kick and he fell to the mat, but when Clements engaged he almost got caught in a triangle. Clements closed the round with a spinning back fist.
The fighters opened the second throwing bombs at each other, but Wisniewski ducked under and tripped Clements into half guard. Clements got back to his feet against the cage, and spun away with a nice spinning back fist. Clements was throwing huge looping right hands, but Wisniewski responded with a big front kick. Clements continued to throw heavy single shots, most of which landed. He also tried some spinning attacks with varying degrees of success. Wisniewski was able to get a takedown again, and advanced immediately to mount. Clements rolled over and Wisniewski tried to latch on a choke, but he wasn't able to secure it. Wisniewski had a body lock and was working body punches, but Clements responded with some damaging back elbows from the floor when the horn sounded.
They opened the third with some wild striking, but Wisniewski moved to get the takedown again quickly. Clements landed a couple of solid knees and grabbed a single leg of his own, but they reset in the middle. Clements started to tee off on Wisniewski again, landing a spinning backfist and another spinning back kick. Wisniewski took the shots and fired back with some right hands of his own. Wisniewski went back to looking for the takedown, but ate a standing elbow for his troubles. Another spinning backfist landed, and Clements followed up with a hard knee. Wisniewski ended up on his back eating shots, but survived to the final bell.
Clements entered his first UFC hoping to continue a four-fight win streak. Wisniewski lost his last bout to Josh Neer by TKO at UFC on Versus 6 last October.

ATLANTA -- In an early bid for a Fight of the Night Award, Chris Clements out-struck Keith Wisniewski en route to a spirited split decision win.
Clements survived some early trouble on the ground and was able to keep things standing throughout much of the rest of the way in scraping past the veteran Wisniewski for the victory. The judges scored it 29-28, 29-28, 28-29.
It was the first octagon win for Clements, who was making his UFC debut. He improved to 11-4 overall.
The first round was wild, with Wisniewski scoring an early takedown, only to see the referee stand them up even though he was in half-guard and working. Clements took advantage of the opportunity, dropping Wisniewski with a body punch and working him over from the top.
The second was just as competitive, with Clements throwing a variety of spinning strikes, many connecting. Wisniewski later scored a takekdown, but Clements didn't surrender from the bottom position, landing a series of elbow strikes while Wisniewski had his back.
The duo shared an embrace as the third round began, and continued the scrap, with Clements dropping Wisniewski late in the round with an overhand right. He looked for the finish from the top but couldn't get it. Still, it was enough to earn the victory.
Wisniewski fell to 28-14-1 with his second straight defeat.
ATLANTA - Chris Clements made a successful UFC debut after posting a gritty and hard-fought performance against fellow welterweight Keith Wisniewski.

A welterweight bout between Josh Neer and Mike Pyle has been added to the fight card of UFC on FX 3. Pyle tweeted the news on Friday morning.
UFC on FX 3 is scheduled for June 8, 2012 and is headlined by a flyweight semi-finals rematch between Ian McCall and Demetrious Johnson. Fans can decide the location and venue of the card by voting in the UFC's Hometown Throwdown sweepstakes.
Neer (33-10-1) enters the contest riding the momentum of a six-fight win streak, including a pair of stoppage victories over Keith Wisniewski and Duane Ludwig since rejoining the UFC for his fourth tour of duty. At 28 years old, "The Dentist" has proven himself to be a fearsome finisher, ending 29 of his 33 wins before reaching the judge's scorecards.
Across the cage, Pyle (22-8-1) looks to continue a recent career resurgence that has seen the 36-year-old taste victory in four out of his last five appearances, capped by a 82-second TKO victory over Ricardo Funch in January. Notably, "Quicksand" is one of only four men to ever defeat world-renown welterweight Jon Fitch, handing the AKA product a first-round loss in his first professional fight.
Josh Neer managed to survive an early onslaught from Duane Ludwig before locking in a deep guillotine choke that put Ludwig to sleep.
After the fight hit the mat, Ludwig tried to scramble and left his neck exposed to an extremely gritty veteran. Besides being rocked on the feet during an initial striking match, Neer also realized he had to keep busy:
“When I was on top of him I could feel blood trickle down my neck,” Neer said post-fight. “I didn’t know how bad the cut was above my eye, so I knew I had to finish him and finish quick. I saw an opening and got him.”
Since returning to the UFC in late 2001, Neer has gone 2-0, including a TKO against Keith Wisniewski last October. Expect the former FMS product to receive another tough test in the lightweight division later this year, while he hopes to build his UFC resume (again).
