Joe Camacho and his macho guillotine-busting choke series

[div class="notice" class2="icon"]The following is from an article on DstryrSG, part of the MiddleEasy Network.[/div] Grapplers, it's been a Gracie heavy week so far at DSTRYR/SG, so we felt strongly that we had to mix it it for all of our sakes.  In the world of no-gi grappling and in MMA, it seems the guillotine is still king, despite all the training grapplers and fighters do to defend and defeat it.  We still see it commonly attempted and employed.  Just the other night on UFC on Fuel TV, Cody McKenzie scored yet another funky unorthodox version of the classic sub against Marcus LeVesseur.  It's all a testament to the technique's effectiveness.  But, you know this. Enter Aloisio Silva black belt and MMA fighter, Joe Camacho and his variation on the now famous "Von Flue" choke (made famous by its namesake, Jason Vonn Flue).  This is a tough and advanced maneuver from my perspective, but it looks totally doable, and Joe's got an entire string of options that spring from it. You will not have a problem watching over two hours of Chael Sonnen on the Joe Rogan Experience

Three years ago, Joe Rogan had a tree growing out of his toilet. It's amazing that a tree could emerge from a large pipe devoid of light, but it's even more amazing that someone was reincarnated as a tree in a toilet. Hopefully, it was some evil guy like Joseph Stalin and that was his punishment for his general douchebagary throughout history. An entire life spent feeding on the leftovers of whatever Joe Rogan had the night before -- and in complete darkness. Suddenly your life ends when some plumber does this to you. Despite being surrounded by excrement, I would much rather spend my life as a tree in a toilet than to be trapped in the cage with an angry Chael Sonnen. Last night, Joe Rogan and Chael Sonnen were locked inside of a room for over two hours and talked about everything in this universe -- and that's all that really needs to be said. {iframe}http://player.vimeo.com/video/42174849{/iframe}

UFC Ultimate Fighter Live Preview: Joe Proctor Vs. Chris Tickle

Week 6 of UFC's The Ultimate Fighter Live is upon us, and we are ready to determine our 5th quarter-finalist. This week's bout was made by Urijah Faber and pits his #4 pick Joe Proctor against Dominick Cruz #7 Chris Tickle. Last week's Michael Chiesa vs. Jeremy Larsen fight was a bit one-sided, but this week should get us back to a more competitive fight. Keep reading for an in-depth breakdown of each man, plus fight videos. As always, The Ultimate Fighter airs live on FX Friday night at 10 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT. So far in the show, Chris Tickle has received a fair amount of screen-time, but it's been due to his made for reality TV persona, not his fighting. We've seen him wear a gas mask, steal a parking sign, refuse to take part in Faber's workshop, and complain, complain, complain. Oh, and we saw him look like a buffoon during his staredown last week with a very prolonged "Come at me bro!" that just seemed silly. This week, the story writes itself - can he back up all his talk, or is he just a blowhard? Unfortunately for Proctor, I expect he'll take a back seat to Tickle this week. CHRIS TICKLE (7-4)5'9" | 29 years old | 69.5" reachTUF record: def. Austin Lyons (TKO, R1) Tickle hails from Illinois and has fought primarily in the Midwest circuit. He's listed as training out of Onestep Fitness, though it's been mentioned a few times on the show that he doesn't have a real formal camp he trains with. Tickle is currently on a 5 fight win streak that includes victories over fringe UFC veterans Brian Geraghty and Steve Berger. He had a rough start to his career, going 2-4 in his first 6, with all 4 loses coming via submission. Though he didn't show it against Lyons, Tickle's base is wrestling. He has a nice Greco-Roman style throw that he favors to get the fight to the mat. But over the course of his career he has focused more on his striking. As we saw on the premiere, he's a hyper aggressive fighter who likes to come out swinging - the kind of person tailor made for UFC bonuses. He throws it all into his shots, winging every one with power. And he does have nice KO power - he's won 5 of 7 via KO. He also has a decent, and probably overlooked, submission game. His biggest problem is that aggression. He throws himself fully into his punches, his kicks, and his submission attempts, but can do so a bit too recklessly. Particularly on the ground, he can get into trouble by going for a submission without first securing position. But that aggression also can quickly overwhelm opponents and earn him the definitive victory. Against Proctor, expect him to try and make it a slugfest and score the big KO. JOE PROCTOR (7-1)5'10" | 26 years old | 72" reachTUF record: def. Jordan Rinaldi (Dec) Joe Prcotor is a Massachusetts native training under UFC Lightweight Joe Lauzon. After starting his career as more of a boxer, Proctor has really emphasized his jiu jitsu game in recent years under Lauzon's tutelage. He has 4 submission wins and has been the distance 3 times. In his last fight, he won the Reality Fighting Lightweight title from Matt Bessette. In terms of technique, Proctor has come a long way from the start of his career. Watching his early fights, you see a wild striker who windmilled punches with no regards for defense or planning. He's since tightened that game up quite a bit from a technical standpoint, and also crafted a clear purpose to his strikes. Like his mentor Lauzon, Proctor uses his strikes to create an opening, then seizes that opening to lock on a submission. This was on full display against Rinaldi, where Proctor used the smallest of openings to secure a perfect guillotine. That said, his striking still has some areas to work on. He's very focused on his hands at the expense of a more complete striking game. He also still has a tendency to get hit, and while he's demonstrated a good chin, it's been tested a bit too much for my liking. For the Tickle fight, look for Proctor to be patient and try to lock on a submission for the win. Prediction: Joe Proctor by submission, round 1 I might be overestimating the comparison, but this is the kind of fight Lauzon excels in, and I think Proctor will do the same. Tickle is over-aggressive and reckless, and Proctor will find that opening and close the show. I suspect this will be short, but action-packed. Fight footage in the full entry. Hockey Fight of the Day: Joe Thornton vs. Drew Doughty

Though this bout may feature the Los Angeles Kings’ Drew Doughty against the San Jose Sharks’ Joe Thornton but it might as well have been David vs. Goliath considering the size-difference between the two. Joe Rogan Fires Back At Claims He Needs To “Take It Down A Notch”

During a recent edition of the Joe Rogan Experience, a podcast put on by the color commentator for the UFC himself, Joe Rogan, Rogan fired back at recent claims he was told by a FOX producer to tone down his announcing during an event. I’ve been doing the UFC for how long? (Expletive), who knows? ’97. It’s very rare does anyone say anything. But, once we started going on FOX, the producer had to actually tell me in my ear, the FOX executive was like, ‘Tell him to take it down a notch.’ When I’m actually fired up…of course (people) like it! But these (expletive) dummy executives – and I’m not saying the FOX ones – I’m saying pretty much a huge percentage of the group of people in the ‘producer’ position, a lot of them think they’re creative. You can’t tell me to deliver the way I deliver. I’ve been doing it forever. Rogan and Mike Goldberg handle pay-per-view and FOX events, while the new team of Jon Anik and Kenny Florian have been hosting the other cards. Many people complain about Rogan’s style, but he has stuck with the UFC and helped them reach another audience through his former and now returning show, Fear Factor, along with his comedy acts. Joe Namath has confidence in Peyton Manning’s NFL future ()

All but one year of Joe Namath's 13-year NFL career was spent with the New York Jets, so the Hall of Fame quarterback knows a little bit about what Peyton Manning is going through right now. Manning, who missed the entirety of last season following multiple neck surgeries, was released from the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday , drawing a close to a legacy that turned around the downtrodden franchise. Much like Namath, who left the Jets in 1977 to play one season with the Los Angeles Rams, Manning is now looking for his first team since being drafted by the Colts 14 years ago. "I made that move after 12 years and it was very difficult. So much newness involved and I made the move because I wanted to play," Namath told Yahoo! Sports. "The move was made because the Rams' coach was Chuck Knox and I had a relationship with him, one dating back to high school, actually. I thought I was sound enough to play and the Jets were going through a rebuilding situation and Richard Todd wanted to play. But I see Peyton going to a contender; I can't see him going to someone who can't contend. If he goes to Miami, he'd be in that situation certainly." Namath (a contributor to the Shutdown Corner Blog during the playoffs ), sees that Manning playing in Miami with the Dolphins would make sense, especially since the team finished last year on a strong note and has several offensive playmakers plus a good offensive line. In addition, Manning lives in south Florida, seemingly making it a natural fit. On Friday, Manning visited the Denver Broncos, and the Arizona Cardinals will also get consideration from a quarterback who has thrown over 54,000 yards and 399 touchdowns in the regular season alone. First and foremost, Namath is concerned with Manning's health, but he doesn't think teams should shy away from him just because of the neck surgeries and nerve impingement. "I wouldn't be surprised if he can play another five years if he's healthy," Namath said. "The number one thing with him is his arm strength because he does have excellent health otherwise .If anyone can swing this and be successful it is Peyton Manning — and let's not forget that Joe Montana was reasonably successful in Kansas City after all those years in San Francisco. I'm not concerned about him going somewhere new. I'd want to see him throw that ball. What about that arm strength?"

Pat Curran demolishes Joe Warren to win the Bellator featherweight strap

Joe Warren loses in the most spectacular of ways, every one of his losses have been a highlight to remember. His weird 'no tap' loss to Bibiano Fernandes, his knockout loss to Alexis Villa. If you ask us, everything Joe Warren does is full of guts and a tenacity that normal mortals will never be able to wrap their minds around. When he was cheering on Hendo at Hendo Vs. Fedor he was louder than Russians four, possibly even five times his size, and that's no easy feat. Joe Warren half-asses nothing, and his round three loss to quickly rising star, nay, now established star, Pat Curran, was filled with Warren's usual amount of grit. Warren was outsized (Curran looked like Stefan Struve compared to Warren) and being outstruck by Curran from the beginning of the fight. Somehow, Warren found any way he could to close the distance and take Curran down to the best of his undersized abilities. It didn't work so well in round one, where Warren was rocked by a brutal and well timed knee, but Warren survived into the second round then revealed to his corner he had a possible broken hand. Then, through a never-ending supply of takedowns, Warren wins round two. Between rounds Curran's corner tells him he's down two rounds to nothing, so 'turn it up' and that he did. Curran poured it on Warren so bad I felt guilty that I lived a few short miles from Team Curran. Witness this massacre by your new Bellator featherweight champ, Pat Curran below. [Source]

Hey people, let's not forget UFC on FX 2 airs live and free tonight!

I woke up this morning at around 4am and the only thing on my mind was some cookies I baked earlier in the week. So I went into the kitchen popped a cookie in the microwave for a second, warmed it up, ate it and seemingly satisfied-I fell back asleep. Two hours later I woke up in the midst of a dream about making out with Joe Rogan. This was simultaneously weird and awesome. Surprisingly awesome. Joe if you happen to read this, I'd just like to say--impressive performance. Since I don't normally wake up to dreams about fully clothed, wall-grinding, necking sessions with Joe Rogan-I can only assume a dream interpreter would tell me my dream was just something to remind me that I can check out Joe and UFC on FX 2 tonight. Seems like there isn't a ton of talk about this card which is a shame because there are some potentially mind scrambling fights lined up on the card. From the flyweights to the main event of Alves vs Kampmann, we should be in for a fun night of free fights.  Get ready for it with this clip of all the main card guys telling the Aussie press how they believe they will win tonight. I'm going to go take a nap and try to restart my Joe Rogan dream. Enjoy!

UFC 144 Results: Anthony Pettis Knocks Out Joe Lauzon In The First Round

Anthony Pettis defeats Joe Lauzon by knockout. The stoppage came at 1:21 in the first round. Early head kick from Anthony Pettis. He followed it up with a leg kick. Joe Lauzon came forward with punches but wasn't able to land anything. Anthony Pettis landed a side kick to the body and then followed up with a left high kick that came out of nowhere. Joe Lauzon was dropped and Pettis followed up with punches until the referee dove in to stop the fight. Joe Lauzon expected the kick to land low and left his head wide open. Anthony Pettis was the last WEC lightweight champion and was expected to be the number one contender when the company folded. Injuries to Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard forced him to take a fight against Clay Guida. Pettis lost his title shot in the loss. Joe Lauzon made his UFC debut with a knockout win over Jens Pulver. Since that win he has been unable to string together a group of wins to break into the top of the division. SBN coverage of UFC 144: Edgar vs. Henderson

Melvin Guillard hopes Anthony Pettis wins this weekend at UFC 144 so he can get a rematch with Joe Lauzon.

The statistics of the UFC’s long history of rematches tell you absolutely nothing about what would become of a rematch with Joe Lauzon and Melvin Guillard. About half the time, the fighter who won the first time ended up winning the second time, the other half of the time, the fighters went 1-1, requiring a rubber match that yields even less conclusive data. In Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard’s situation, they’re actually 1-1-1, so we still need to see a definitive rubber match. Yes, we do. Stop trying to fabricate a counter-argument, they’re not finished fighting until we see them fight for a fourth time. We miss the days when fighters were less well-rounded and the outcomes of their fights were more decisive. So does Melvin Guillard, who continues to insist that he’d beat Joe Lauzon nine times out of ten, and remains disgruntled with Joe Lauzon's choice words for their last fight. A few week ago, Melvin came off a loss to Jim Miller and promised to devote an entire year to BJJ in order to never succumb to another submission defeat again, but today, he’s firing back at Lauzon’s comments from earlier in the week via MMAWeekly. “Lately on my Twitter some posts have been popping up and I’m like what the hell is this? So I’m looking and next thing I know it’s people talking about Joe Lauzon hit the nail on the head, he was right, so I went in and read the article and all of a sudden he’s blasting me talking about he slapped me and he choked me out, and Melvin’s going around telling everybody I got lucky. I never said the dude got lucky. I said it was a good fight, I always gave Joe Lauzon the respect that was due, and I thought he was the better guy that day. Did I think the fight was a fluke on my part? Yeah, the fight was a fluke on my part, but I never took anything from him. So I guess he misinterpreted what I said.” “The new me, I’m trying to be respectful and handle it the right way, but at this point right now I’m kind of fed up with it. The old me is about to come out on Joe Lauzon. He’s about to take Rich Clementi’s place of being that guy that I just don’t like… For me, I feel disrespected because I’ve done nothing but talk Joe Lauzon up, even when a lot of interviews and fight analysts were still not giving him the credit that was due saying that 9 out of 10 times he would win that once, and I would win the other nine. So people were bashing him and it wasn’t even me, and I’m standing up for him saying that Joe Lauzon is a top competitor, he can be in the top five, top ten or whatever. Now he’s blasting out at me and I have not said anything bad towards Joe Lauzon.” “In the 10 losses I have in my MMA career, I haven’t rematched anyone I’ve lost to. Not once, I’ve never really cared for rematches because I felt they won, now I’ll move on. Right now, I’m at the point where this fight means something to me, I have something to prove against Joe Lauzon, so this is a rematch I’m asking for… Right now, I’m looking to watch the fights in Japan and I’m praying that he loses to (Anthony) Pettis because I want a rematch against Joe Lauzon. I don’t want to fight nobody next but Joe Lauzon… I don’t even care how it goes, I just want to see Pettis win and I want an immediate rematch with Joe Lauzon. Hopefully, I can get that rematch by fourth of July in Vegas… I’m tired of just being nice to these guys, I try to be nice, not befriend them, but be nice and respectful when I see them around. I feel like I’m being slapped in the face being that guy.” If a rematch transpires, I the only certainty is that I will be watching it. With regards to an outcome, odds makers have proven that they are not to be trusted whenever they’re leading you to believe that you should bet against Joe Lauzon. These are the same odds makers that said Frankie Edgar could never beat anyone in his entire career. Props to all of you who saw through these lies.

Fired Up Melvin Guillard Wants A Rematch With Joe Lauzon

A war of words is brewing between Melvin Guillard and Joe Lauzon… after their fight. It usually happens the other way around, but not this time. Guillard inadvertently started it when he told reporters he beat himself after Lauzon choked him out in 47 seconds at UFC 136. We hear that a lot from fighters, but in this instance, the person who won said wait a second, I’m pretty sure I’m the reason you lost that fight. “I keep seeing all these interviews where (Guillard) is like, ‘Oh, Joe didn’t beat me. I beat myself,’” Lauzon testily said. “No, I smacked you in the face with my fist, and you went down and I choked you. I’m pretty sure I’m taking credit for that.” Not exactly an untrue statement, but it set Guillard off anyways. Guillard went off on a rather lengthy tirade about Lauzon’s comments and respecting his fellow fighters. Ultimately, what it boiled down though is that Guillard wants a rematch. “The new me, I’m trying to be respectful and handle it the right way, but at this point right now I’m kind of fed up with it. The old me is about to come out on Joe Lauzon. He’s about to take Rich Clementi’s place of being that guy that I just don’t like,” Guillard said. “Right now, I’m looking to watch the fights in Japan and I’m praying that he loses to (Anthony) Pettis because I want a rematch against Joe Lauzon. I don’t want to fight nobody next but Joe Lauzon,” Guillard said. “I don’t even care how it goes, I just want to see Pettis win and I want an immediate rematch with Joe Lauzon. Hopefully, I can get that rematch by fourth of July in Vegas.” I’m not sure a rematch is really warranted even if Lauzon loses this weekend, but hey if Guillard thinks it was just a fluke and these guys have beef, then why not? I’m sure Joe wouldn’t mind proving it wasn’t as long as he doesn’t leave Japan with a title shot. Image via Esther Lin for MMA Fighting

Right now, I'm looking to watch the fights in Japan and I'm praying that he loses to (Anthony) Pettis because I want a rematch against Joe Lauzon. I don't want to fight nobody next but Joe Lauzon. I don't even care how it goes, I just want to see Pettis win and I want an immediate rematch with Joe Lauzon. Hopefully, I can get that rematch by fourth of July in Vegas." -- As if it wasn't enough for Joe Lauzon to rock and submit Melvin Guillard in just 47 seconds at UFC 136 last Oct. 8, 2011, in Houston, Texas, "J-Lau" also rubbed some salt in the wound by bagging on "The Young Assassin" via Twitter when he was choked out by Jim Miller in his very next fight. That, combined with some other assorted trash talk, has Guillard seeing red and eagerly awaiting the result of this Saturday night's (Feb. 25, 2012) UFC 144 bout between Lauzon and Anthony Pettis. In the event the latter emerges victorious, Guillard has UFC matchmaker Joe Silva on speed dial and ready to annoy for a rematch, preferably by the Fourth of July weekend fight card in Las Vegas. That's what he tells MMAWeekly.com, anyway. He's not exactly in a good position to be asking for anything, considering he's lost two fights in a row, both by submission and both inside the first round. But a Lauzon loss would open up his dance card, so why not? Any Maniacs want to see Lauzon vs. Guillard part deux?

Joe Rogan wants us to know that his bromance with Rampage Jackson is extensive, he has no beef with him

The stereotype that black people enjoy fried chicken is marginal at best. Most people I know, regardless of race, enjoy fried chicken. They also enjoy fried seafood, potatoes, Oreos, and Dana White even takes it as far as enjoying Fried Butter at the Wisconsin State Fair. It’s hard to blame people for enjoying fried food. In fact, if I wasn’t on a diet at this very moment, I’d be battering everything in my refrigerator to throw it into hot oil, just for fun. Earlier this week, Rampage had some choice words for Joe Rogan in reference to criticism over his fighting style, but today, Joe Rogan has issued a response by reminding the world that he’s a Rampage Jackson fan, and even goes as far as to recall sharing some Popeye's fried chicken with him. Good choice, Joe. It's undoubtedly the most consistently tasty chicken in existence. There's never been a moment in my life in which I was disappointed in the quality of any item on the Popeye's menu.

Hero Joe Lozito made a statement at psycho killer’s sentencing

MiddleEasy is clearly the Family Guy of the MMA blogosphere: when they decide to write something, they flap their fins until they pick some random idea balls from the tank, throw in an MMA link, say “baller” several times, and boom, it’s a post. So imagine my surprise when I came across their post on the Joe Lozito story, and the introductory idea ball actually related to the rest of the story. Bauzen from MiddleEasy likes chicken sandwiches, AND he had a chicken sandwich with Joe Lozito! After cleaning my pants and recovering from the shock of seeing a logical connection in a MiddleEasy article for the first time ever, I discovered that the rest of their article on the Joe Lozito story is actually pretty awesome too. About a year ago, Lozito was just minding his own business while taking the New York subway to work when he inadvertently became a hero by stopping psychopath Maksim Gelman, who had killed four people on a murderous rampage because a hot girl didn’t like him: There was a delay as an ‘emotionally disturbed person’ boarded the same car and proceeded to pound on the operator’s door. If you’ve spent any extended time in New York City, none of this would seem out of the ordinary. In fact, I would venture to say I’ve never experienced a completely “normal” subway ride getting anywhere in the 25+ years I’ve lived in this city. Unbeknownst to Joe, this particular unhinged man was the focus of a city-wide manhunt following four consecutive murders stemming from the night before. When the conductor essentially told the man to get lost, he turned his eyes to Joe, the person geographically nearest to him at that very moment. He reached to his belt line and retrieved an eight-inch chef’s knife, the kind you’re probably accustomed to seeing in a kitchen, stared directly into Joe’s eyes and muttered “You are going to die”. Within seconds, the knife traveled into & out of Joe’s arms, shoulders, and head; a total of seven times. Joe immediately planted his legs on the vinyl-coated floor and shot for the most important single-leg takedown of his life while the train came to a screeching halt. A passenger must have triggered the subway’s emergency brake lever upon seeing the savage attack commence. Bleeding profusely, Joe wrestled the man to the ground, disarmed him, and more or less single-handedly brought an end to the Maxim Gelman 24-hour killing spree, while the rest of the subway’s patrons resisted getting their hands dirty. Several moments later, two New York police officers emerged from the conductor’s cabin, where they had resided for the duration of the train’s course. They immediately arrested Gelman and graciously accepted credit for apprehending NYC’s most wanted man while Joe continued to bleed out onto the dirty floor of the subway car. Nobody knows exactly what prompted two armed personnel sworn to protect and serve the people of New York to wait as long as they did to come out and pick up the suspect they were specifically stationed to look out for that day. It was nearly 25 minutes after the attack began when the train proceeded to the next station and Joe finally made it into an ambulance where his bleeding cuts were tended-to. To date, he credits his survival to a single compassionate passenger, Alfred Douglas, who found some clean napkins to compress his most critical wounds and kept him alive long enough for medics to take control of the situation. Even with long-lasting emotional and physical scars, Joe managed to sneak some humor into his allocution at one of the nutcase’s sentencing hearings, which happened on February 15 (after da jump): read more

UFC 144: Joe Rogan Responds To Rampage Jackson

Yesterday we posted an interview with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in which he bashed UFC commentator Joe Rogan for favoritism. Jackson was doing some media in advance of his UFC 144 co-main event against Ryan Bader this Saturday in Japan. Rogan took the opportunity to respond to Jackson on his Joe Rogan Experience video podcast. Some quotes: "I love Rampage. I don't mean to be rude when I assess things. I'm just trying to look objectively and figure out how a dude could be doing better than he's doing." "I like Rampage as a person. I enjoyed hanging out with him." "All I'm trying to do is objectively assess what someone could be doing differently." "I'm just trying to commentate. I'm not looking deep into someone's soul." "I can't do what I'm supposed to be doing and try to protect someone's feelings." "When I tell him to throw leg kicks, it's just because the guy has awesome leg kicks." "The last thing I want to do is add more pressure, add more stress (to a fighter's job)." They also speculate about why Jackson no longer slams opponents the way he did back in the Pride days, whether or not Joe should be worried the next time he runs into Rampage, and Joe names his all-time fighter. Brazilian middleweight Miquel Falcao was coming off his debut win over Gerald Harris and was set to fight Alessio Sakara. But Falcao was injured, leading to a replacement with Rafael Natal. But just 19 days before the fight Natal injured his knee, making way for the debut of unknown fighter Chris Weidman. What's interesting about this change of plans is that Johnson's win over Torres granted him his bantamweight title fight against Dominick Cruz. The Joe Lozito Story

A year ago, I discovered a little sandwich shop on Mulberry Street that produced the finest Chicken Parmesan sandwiches I’ve ever had. That entire summer, I continued frequenting the restaurant and also discovered their turkey sandwiches were enchanted with an unknown mysterious additive. No, it’s not just a turkey sandwich. They do something miraculous with turkey, skipping several generations of culinary & technological advancements to produce a sandwich that I refused to tell anyone about, because I didn’t want the most ballerish sandwichery in NYC to be discovered. Later that year, Anthony Bourdain’s highly acclaimed “No Reservations” show on the Travel Channel discovered the same place and America’s most outspoken food snob proclaimed “Torrisi” as one of NYC’s best kept secrets, thereby shredding any hope I had of keeping my gustatory treasure to myself; after millions of people watched the hour-long dissection of how amazing their food was, and how no other comparable restaurant sourced their ingredients as honestly, locally, and sustainably as them, it became instantly impossible to even see a table outside of their lunch hours. Formerly smug and well-fed foodies were forced to settle for something far less extraordinary in Little Italy just down the street, but on Wednesday, February 15, I found myself walking back up that same street for the first time in months to have a sandwich with Joe Lozito – avid MMA fan, assistant treasurer at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center, loving father of two, and self-proclaimed Chicken ‘Parm’ aficionado. I tried to explain how amazing these sandwiches were, and insisted we endure the hour-long wait for a table (thanks to Anthony Bourdain’s endorsement). Ultimately, we were in great spirits following our brief walk up Mulberry Street, which consisted of smiles, jokes, and laughter as he brought closure to a yearlong saga that played out in New York City’s criminal court system. On February 12, 2011, Joe entered New York City’s subway system en route to work, following a routine he has practiced for years, just like millions of his fellow “straphangers”, as they’re known locally. What differentiated Joe from everyone else on the train was that his years of watching MMA would ultimately save his life, and the lives of every other man, woman, and child on the train that day. The "one" train he normally took uptown wasn’t in service that morning. Indifferently, Joe boarded the "three" line. He assumed a seat in the front car nearest to the subway operator’s quarters and waited for the doors to close but there was a delay as an ‘emotionally disturbed person’ boarded the same car and proceeded to pound on the operator’s door. While Joe was rushed to the hospital, the local news coverage of his ordeal exceeded any other headlines that week. There wasn’t a single channel covering sports, pop culture, or politics, where the story wasn’t about Joe Lozito stopping a madman on a killing rampage. Less than a day later, Joe was considered medically stable enough to talk to media regarding his horrifying experience on the subway. Throughout the entire media-blitz, the reoccurring question remained, “How were you able to overcome a man stabbing you and end up disarming him?” Joe’s humble response, over and over again, was, “It’s something I’ve seen guys do in the UFC on a regular basis, but without the knife.” It’s the story he told FOX, ABC, CBS, TMZ, and finally Dana White - who responded by deeming Joe a true life “hero” and subsequently invited him and his family to sit at a VIP table at UFC 128 in Newark, New Jersey. Since then, Joe has sat ringside at multiple MMA events, considered a guest of honor - and in our opinion, it’s well deserved for many reasons. Besides the gravity of what he was able to overcome, protecting dozens of horrified passengers, this was the first time that all major media sources united to produce a story regarding Mixed Martial Arts in a positive light in a state where the sport is still illegal - In fact, it remains the ongoing joke of the MMA world that people like Bob Reilly have ignorantly (and without rational consideration) called mixed martial arts “savage” and unfit for the state of New York. I’d venture to guess that people like Mr. Reilly or any of his constituents at the New York State Assembly would struggle to remember any time when a baseball, football, or basketball fan was able to use what he saw on TV to stop a ruthless murderer and save potentially countless lives in the process. Needless to say, Joe Lozito is not impressed by their ignorance either. Eleven months later, MMA is still illegal in New York and Maksim Gelman will serve 200 consecutive years in prison without the possibility of parole. The local media swarmed the sentencing, capturing disturbing images of the psychopath verbally lashing out while the victims’ families cried over their lost loved-ones. It was a top story in a city where there’s rarely enough time to cover something that happened a full calendar year ago. Despite the lunacy, it wouldn’t be Gelman’s last time in court or his final hurtful remark. Just 27 days later, on February 15, 2012, Joe returned to court to face the man who tried to kill him, who was to be sentenced for up to an additional 25 years in prison, a formality at this point, but a final opportunity for Joe to say his piece to the murderer. While our cameras were not allowed in the courtroom, a brief transcript of Joe’s final statement to Maksim Gelman was clear and concise: “This guy has a lot of time he has to start serving... I don’t want to keep him here.” Joe proceeded to acknowledge Alfred Douglas for saving his life by giving him first aid after the attack. He then looked directly into Gelman’s eyes. “When you attacked and I took you down, you went down real easy,” “You didn’t take me down, you jerk-off,” Gelman fired back. Looking at the courtroom, Lozito responded, “Look, it’s the funniest Russian since Yakov Smirnoff.” A brief moment of laughter overcame the courtroom. Joe proceeded. “I appreciate that you chose me, I really do... Maybe if you’d continued your extreme cowardice, you would have picked on another person, a woman and maybe she couldn’t defend herself. Or a child.” Gelman resumed interjecting, “You fucking jerk-off. Moron!” “Why are you so angry?” Lozito mocked back. Clearly infuriated, Gelman began hollering loudly, forcing the judge to tell him to keep quiet. “Just think about the lives you have changed,” Lozito resumed, then listed the names of Gelman’s four victims. “They’ll never get to walk the face of this earth because you’re a spoiled little boy who nobody listened to as a kid. Instead of taking your ball and going home, you threw a tantrum.” “I wish you all the best. I hope you rot in your cell and you have hell to look forward to, so enjoy it.” Given a last chance to speak on his own behalf, Gelman’s final words were simply "Kim Kardashian, will you marry me?” followed by one last insult towards Lozito, “That jerk-off can suck my dick.” “No thank you, for the record,” Lozito replied as he took his seat and awaited the judge’s sentencing. "We've been subjected today to something of this man's evil, unrepentant nature," Judge Carruthers said. "Remove him." He handed down an additional 25 years in prison to the pre-existing 200 year sentence. Gelman was escorted out through the back of the courtroom for the last time, and the remaining spectators in the room were left looking around at one another in abrupt disbelief at what they had just witnessed. A quadruple homicide + attempted murder convict wasn’t in the same league as the other criminals before the judge that day. That kind of evil wasn’t even in the same galaxy of most people’s notions of reality. At a charity event MiddleEasy attended a few months ago sponsored by the New York Mixed Martial Arts Initiative, Joe was uncertain how he’d handle himself once the day arrived. It was our first time meeting, and he was reluctant to introduce himself, despite effortlessly being the most charismatic man in the room. My initial impression was that he was a soft-spoken individual who could say a lot without saying anything at all. The look on his face often tells a variety of stories. Joe will probably wear the physical scars of the wounds he sustained for the rest of his life, but emotionally, I’m convinced nothing could ever break him. When the time had come, Joe took a deep breath, stood up, and proceeded out of the courtroom just as confident as he walked in, answered a few questions amidst a flock of impassioned photographers and journalists, then insisted he wanted the best chicken parm sandwich on the island of Manhattan. Luckily, I knew just the place… We toasted a round of beers in the spirit of closure to a year-long wait to say his peace. You could ask Joe Lozito 10,000 different ways, and he’d deny that he’s anything remotely close to a hero, but the reality of what he did transcends any notion of just being humble. It’s because of him that dozens of people who rode the subway got home safely on the night of February 12, 2011. A year later, the people who sat there while Joe was getting attacked by a monster continue live their lives as though nothing ever happened, and they may never fully grasp how lucky they were that this particular MMA fan was aboard that train. Not only is Joe Lozito a hero, but he’s a person that can never be thanked enough for putting himself in harm’s way so that nobody else had to. If you haven’t yet, you should take a moment to send him a simple “thank you,” on Twitter. He whole-heartedly appreciate every single motivational message you send his way, insisting it makes his physical and mental recovery that much more bearable. He also responds to every last message and is always up for a discussion about sports. On a personal note, it’s people like Joe that give me faith in humanity, humility, and make me proud to be in a position to tell his story. Thank you, Joe Lozito. I’m proud to consider you a hero, and a friend. Additional thanks go out to Jason Nawara for editing this footage we obtained by sharing this day of closure for a lot of people.

Joe lauzon's UFC 144 Vlog 1- Featuring the head cam of doom

See, what Joe Lauzon needs to do here is expand on his behind the scenes look of a fighter doing the UFC countdown show. Lets get another camera crew in there to document the behind the scenes of the people documenting the behind the scenes. Kind of a Russian doll situation where instead of porcelain dolls you have multiple camera crews documenting each other while a camera crew documents a fighter. We could spin down the rabbit hole further but it needs to be cut off at roughly four crews. I've thought this through. Any more than that and it would get really cramped in the gym and Joe needs his space. Always give Joe Lauzon his space, not to mention we have to think about the sanity of the guy who needs to edit all this footage together. Watch Joe Lauzon's UFC 144 Vlog numero uno, in which he has a head cam. [Source]

Joe Palooka: Where Marvel Meets MMA

A “palooka” is defined as an inept fighter or otherwise un-special individual. In the case of MMA-oriented comic book Joe Palooka, the two-issue introductory series does not live up to the main character’s last name, being much more than simply average. Created by longtime fight announcer Joe Antonacci, Joe Palooka was released in digital form last year and is on the cusp of getting the full-fledged hardback treatment in the coming months. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a set of them and, as both a fan of comic books and Mixed Martial Arts, tore through them both in less than twenty minutes. Before getting to the review aspect of this article here are the basics. The story centers on Nick Davis, a fighter with potential who gets mixed up in a situation leaving him on the run from law enforcement. On top of the general investigation a detective is also personally invested in the case for reasons revealed early on. Davis explains his circumstances to his girlfriend, Nina, and heads to Mexico to try and disappear while she works on clearing his name. While there he adopts the moniker “Joe Palooka” after entering an area event in Tijuana, chokes out their toughest guy, and accidentally causes enough ripples to have word get back to police. The first issue ends with Davis on a storage ship headed off into the sunset. Issue two picks up with his adventures on the ship where – surprise – there’s an underground fight club featuring the crew. Davis, as you may have already assumed, is involved by the end where he’s again triumphed against a fearsome foe. However, unbeknownst to him, Nina has been located by the cop with the vendetta and is being held at gunpoint as things fade out. The positives in the pair of pieces definitely outweigh any negatives. Davis is a layered character who stands up to the bad guys, as basic a definition for a superhero as can be offered. However, he’s no saint, and his anger puts him in some bad situations giving him the hint of diversity needed in any interesting protagonist. The artwork is vivid and detailed with fight scenes grounded in reality rather than over the top, i.e. comic-bookish. It tells the tale of MMA in a unique way and is beautifully illustrated in certain instances. My complaints are minor in nature, as both issues were somewhat short and left me wanting to see more going on between the covers. I’m also hopeful Antonacci branches out in terms of the overall story, as it could feel repetitive to readers if every comic is structured the exact same way. There are only so many “bad asses” Davis can beat on the underground circuit. He needs a rival; someone he can’t beat with his current skill-set who also happens to be a terrible person in real life. What is Batman without The Joker or Superman without Lex Luthor? Introduce a foil and let their feud blossom. Finally, call me a hooligan if you must, but I noticed a distinct lack of profanity. If there is blood and a gun there needs to be curse words. It is MMA and I suspect guys who are sailors by day, fighters by night use the occasional four-letter word that isn’t “poop” or “deck”. Overall I enjoyed reading Joe Palooka and would recommend people give it a look, especially if they are into both comics/MMA. You can get the digital copy for $1.99 at Palooka.com, truly hard to beat in that format, and I imagine the print versions won’t be much more when bundled together as an introduction to the potential-laden series. It’s also a great way to support a cause that has sponsored guys like Jimy Hettes, Johny Hendricks, Brendan Schaub, and Dan Miller. I was actually hoping one of them would show up but such was not to be. However, I’m under the impression something along those lines is planned for a future issue. Bottom line – don’t be a palooka, buy a Palooka. Or two of them for that matter. PHOTO CREDIT – JOE PALOOKA

WBC kickboxing bout between Joe Schilling-Simon Marcus approved for “winner take all” terms

When it comes to a fight later this month in Las Vegas a unique stipulation will be in place after both competitors agreed to a “winner take all” stipulation seeing one man walk away with the other’s salary on top of his own. According to a press release from Lion Fight Promotions, the full-rules Muay Thai fight between Joe Schilling (12-1) and Simon Marcus (22-0) on February 25 at Battle in the Desert 5 was approved for the terms this week by the Nevada State Athletic commission. “Joe was talking a lot about what he’s going to do to me and this and that, so I said ‘Put your money where your mouth is’. Money has never been the most important thing to me. What’s important to me is that I show people – especially the media that have him ranked ahead of me – that I can dominate Joe,” explained Marcus of the situation. “I’m going to kick his ass either way and, now it’ll just be more money in my pocket,” retorted Schilling, a training partner of UFC welterweight Nick Diaz. “I’m going to expose him and show everyone that he’s just a pop tart. Even the NSAC weighed in on the matter with chief executive Keith Kizer saying, “The winner take-all purse concept has rarely been used in Nevada. This certainly should bring added interest and intrigue to this contest.” PHOTO CREDIT – Lion Fight Promotions Tweet

ARE YOU EXCITED FOR THIS EVENT, JOE ROGAN?!

At "numbered" UFC events, there's a period at the end of the prelims broadcast when Joe Rogan and Dana White take a minute or two to shill the upcoming pay-per-view.  This always happens to coincide with the video/music intro played at the venue to pump up the crowd for the main card, so they end up shouting over the beautiful strains of "Baba O'Riley" as they try to convey that the PPV is sure to be awesome and you should totally buy it.  In the bowels of the Fightlinker chatroom, this has lovingly come to known as "YELLING TIME!!!!!!", and it is truly a magical time indeed.  In particular, UFC 143 promised to be so awesomely awesome (liars!) that Joe simply could not contain his excitement. The Fightlinker chatroom: come for the fight chat, stay for the thorough-yet-respectful discussion of Kim Winslow's lady-parts.

Carlo Prater believes Joe Rogan publicly humiliated him after the Eric Silva disqualification

It’s 49 degrees today in NYC following our first snowstorm of the year. It leads me to believe that Al Gore had the wrong impression about global warming all along. If I can put on a t-shirt in January and walk to the nearest bodega for a bag of plantain chips, loosing the polar ice caps seem like a fair sacrifice. In congested cities like Rio, those people see the sun almost every day, and the bi-product is some of the most beautifully tanned women in the Southern hemisphere. In fact, the only people complaining in Rio were the folks who weren’t keen on Eric Silva’s controversial disqualification over Carlo Prater, a decision the majority of MMA fans and media disagreed with. It’s been several weeks since the fight, and Carlo Prater is finally speaking about how he felt about it in this interview with Brazil’s Sportv.globo.com. “I think in the end I was made out as a villain. I wasn’t laying on the octagon for nothing after the fight. I want that to be clear. I had to stay in the hospital until Monday. They (UFC) asked me not to go public because, indeed, that wouldn’t do any good for me or Eric. IMO, Mario did the right thing. It’s been a long time since rules have been implemented. You are not allowed to do anything you want inside the cage. Watching the fight video I could see at least 9 blows to the back of the head. I think the way Joe Rogan behaved was completely unethical. He went with the crowd. A real professional doesn’t do that. He was acting like a fan when he should be acting as a shout caster. Mario is a million time more competent than him. He’s been living off this for 20 years. Joe Rogan is just a swagger, someone who walks amongst fighters but isn’t really a fighter himself. He doesn’t understand. Whatever… human beings make mistakes and I am not going to be holding grudges against him” This isn’t the first time someone has criticized Joe Rogan; but it is the first time that Joe Rogan took a position on a controversial stoppage and declared that the referee was wrong inside the octagon. While that kind of personal engagement to the sport might not be something we’re used to, I feel it’s exactly what’s missing in other sports. So often we find commentators sitting monotonous in a press booths, summing up what they see and offering little to no constructive interpretation outside of a fact sheet that’s handed to them, while Rogan lets his passion for the sport transcend the broadcast. Hopefully Carlo Prater and Joe Rogan can make amends before their next event together. Maybe they too can hug it out over a bag of plantain chips. [Source]

Carlo Prater's thoughts on Joe Rogan, Yamasaki's decision

UFC 142: Out Of Line Joe Rogan Harasses Mario Yamasaki After Silva vs Prater

In the second bout of the UFC 142 PPV card, Erick Silva blitzed Carlo Prater and earned himself an apparent stoppage victory via strikes early in the first round. After Mario Yamasaki waved the fight off, the talk began in the cage and the announcement was made that Silva was being disqualified because of strikes to the back of the head, giving Carlo Prater the victory. The ruling was questionable upon viewing the replay but what is unquestionably out of line was Joe Rogan calling out Mario Yamasaki repeatedly in the cage after the fight. He incessantly stated how bad Mario's decision was in front of a worldwide audience in one of the most unprofessional displays of broadcasting I have ever seen. It was right on par with Jim Gray's treatment of Pete Rose at the 1999 World Series. It is, in no way, Joe Rogan's duty to discipline or take any kind of action upon referees. He has no authority and was only able to render his decision on Mario's decision after multiple replays that Mario is not entitled to viewing in the moment. We have seen many fights overturned due to incorrect stoppages and that is the job of the athletic commissions, not post-fight interviewers. Joe Rogan has no right and no place getting in the cage and taking Mario Yamasaki to task over his decision. I am not defending the ruling Mario made in this fight. I think it is an incredibly tough decision to make during a huge flurry by a fighter trying to finish his opponent. The higher ups may change the decision to a No Contest and they may not. In all honesty, this loss for Erick Silva will most likely end up being his version of Jon Jones DQ loss to Matt Hamill. He will not lose any steam and will continue his ascension. Joe Rogan has a job to do and it is not to reprimand officials on PPV. He has never berated the judges like that or any other referee and to do that to Mario is just flat out embarrassing for everyone involved. Poll Was Joe Rogan Out Of Line? Ronda Rousey says she has no problem fighting Miesha Tate AND her boyfriend

Imagine the amount of malpractice lawsuits Ronda Rousey would accumulate if she was a chiropractor. Ronda fights like she spent her entire childhood angrily ripping off the limbs of every G.I. Joe action figure she's owned. That's right, G.I. Joes because I can't imagine a young Rousey playing the role of caretaker to a miniature plastic female. I've never met her, but I'm fairly certain that's not her style. It's also important to note that while I haven't met Rousey, LayzieTheSavage has on numerous occasions and the majority of times it ends up with Layzie being injured in some capacity. For those of you who resided under a rock for the past year, Ronda Rousey is dangerous. So dangerous in fact that in this outtake clip from the Joe Rogan Experience, Rousey says she has no problem fighting Miesha Tate and her boyfriend.

We could watch these G.I. Joe UFC 141 paraodies all day

Where were you when your friend broke the arm off your Road Pig G.I. Joe collectible action figure? If you said 'trapped in a vortex of emotional distress' then we shared the same elementary childhood trauma. Everyone had that friend who had an incredible habit of breaking your possessions and not even telling you they destroyed them. The infamous 'I'll put that broken toy back, be quiet and pretend like it didn't happen' tactic was always utilized, and I'll be damned if it didn't have a 100% success ratio. Later that day, you would find your action figure mangled beyond recognition -- and the only thing you could do? Cry. Cry like the little snotty kid you were. We didn't have any control over our emotions back then. The ending to Labyrinth made us sob (and don't pretend like it didn't). That's why no one will blame you for getting teary eyed after watching this G.I. Joe UFC 141 parody. Don't worry, let the tears flow. No one is watching. Well, except all of those hidden creatures from The Goblin City.

UFC 140 Press Pass: Notes on Strikeforce, Flyweights, and More from Toronto

Filed under: UFCIf only Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira could have gotten himself caught in a choke. As long as he was going to be obstinate about refusing to tap, at least a choke would have allowed him the dignity of his choice without demanding that he pay for it with bone. Alas, he had to go and get himself kimura'd by Frank Mir at UFC 140, which resulted in him lying on his back, looking at his ruined arm like it was some strange appendage that must have belonged to someone else. It was hard enough to watch when it happened live. It only got more stomach-churning as the snap replayed over and over on the big screen afterward. One person who definitely did not have a problem with the gruesome ending was Mir. In the post-fight press conference he explained that he had a little experience with this sort of thing (by the way, you think Tim Sylvia's arm still aches on cold mornings?), though he declined to explain what it felt like to snap another man's appendage because, "I'll probably get in trouble if I describe it too much; you'll probably think I'm disturbed." He then erupted into a super-villain laugh that made us all think that anyway. But hey, if you have to be the creepy dude at the post-fight presser, it's better to be the creepy dude with two working arms. Other notes and news from fight night in Toronto: - Dana White is pretty sure he made his point about rape tweets. Though the UFC prez said he was "happy with the statement" Miguel Torres released, apologizing for the ill-advised tweet that got him fired, he said "nothing's changed" regarding the UFC's attitude to the newly unemployed bantamweight. It doesn't sound like he's totally ruled out a potential reconciliation, and White acknowledged that the decision to fire Torres was unpopular with many fans, saying, "I've been getting my head kicked in for two days on Twitter, but the bottom line is, nobody has any business making jokes about rape." Asked if he might consider some sort of official policy that would help maintain consistency when it comes to fighter punishment in the future, White said, "You want to see consistency? Let's see if anybody does that again. Let's see if anybody does it again. I double-dare you. I double-dare you to send another tweet like that again." - Dennis Hallman's weight cut was an issue that he should have, and probably did see coming. I know because I tried to schedule an interview with Hallman on Thursday morning and was told he'd be cutting weight then, which struck me as a little odd. If you're doing it right, Thursday morning usually isn't the time for actively shedding a bunch of pounds for a Friday afternoon weigh-in, especially if you're an undercard fighter who doesn't have to attend open workouts or the press conference. Basically, your only job that week is to make weight, and Hallman didn't do it. He didn't even come all that close, which makes you wonder if he really has a future at lightweight. Good thing for him he won so convincingly, and did so in a pair of modest shorts rather than speedos. At least now he'll get another chance to make 155 pounds. - Joe Rogan might appear to have the perfect gig now, but there was a time when he was working pro bono. White told members of the media that when he first approached Rogan about being a color commentator for UFC broadcasts, the comedian was the host of network TV hit Fear Factor. While White didn't say what kind of deal Rogan had with NBC for that show, it had to be better than what the UFC offered him right off the bat: nothing. "He did the first 15 UFCs for free," White said. "We didn't pay Joe Rogan a dime for the first 15 UFC's. So, Joe Rogan gets paid now." - Remember the fan from our preview video who made his own 'Tito Ortiz Blocked Me on Twitter' t-shirt? Well, seems like he bought a family pack of those white t-shirts, and he's using them all to promote his MMA agenda with the help of a black sharpie. Our friend was spotted at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday night, this time with a shirt that read, 'I Hacked Miguel Torres's Twitter.' As you can see, he put about as much time into making this t-shirt as most of us put into folding one, but at least it's an MMA-themed t-shirt that doesn't feature skulls or chains. We're moving in the right direction, people. - For a man who has this Strikeforce stuff all figured out now, White doesn't seem all that enthusiastic about it. He kept teasing an announcement, and said he'd hoped to get something done in time to make it official at the post-fight presser, but instead White had to settle for assuring us once again that "Strikeforce lives," and the fighters under contract to the organization will stay there. Guys like lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez might not be happy to hear that, but White insisted, "Gilbert Melendez and all the guys that are in the Strikeforce show and with Showtime, I will make this right, they will be happy to be there. Believe me. I've got this thing worked out. It's going to be good for everybody." Asked if White's involvement in negotiating the deal would also mean he'd take a more hands-on role in running the organization, the boss man let out a beleaguered sigh and said simply, "Yes." You could practically hear the added travel fatigue piling up on him. - Excited about the flyweight tournament? Thank Joe Silva and Sean Shelby. Zuffa's dueling matchmakers were behind the four-man throwdown to crown a 125-pound champ in 2012, according to White, who might have botched the announcement just a tad by not specifying that it was an actual tournament, which he's historically stayed away from. "I had nothing to do with it," he said later. "That's why I got yelled at for screwing it up. Joe and Sean put that together." White didn't even seem totally comfortable branding it a tournament, insisting that having four guys fight on the same card, then pitting the winners against one another for the title is something the UFC has done before. "I guess that's a tournament," he added. It is. And it's a great idea, courtesy of Shelby and Silva. - Speaking of Silva, there was an awful lot of grinning and whispering between the UFC matchmaker and White at the post-fight presser. They went back and forth several times as other people were answering questions, and at one point they even shook hands as if congratulating one another, and then White stood smiling to himself at the podium for several seconds. Our own Ariel Helwani asked White to let us in on the secret, but White wouldn't spill it. Whatever it is, the UFC brass seemed very pleased. Unsolicited travel tip of the week: No trip to Canada is complete without stocking up on those delicious, though sometimes bizarrely named candy bars they have up there. My favorite is Coffee Crisp, but I've been know to buy a Big Turk just to give one to a baffled friend back home. Overheard on the road: From a woman boarding a plane while holding an infant and talking to her husband on a cell phone. "What am I going to read? I don't know. How about the angry expressions on other people's faces?" Score one for self-awareness. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

LayzieTheSavage catches the world up with Joe Lauzon

Ah, very nice J-Lau. There's nothing quite like the relative silence of a lan party where all participants are wearing headsets, clicking and grunting. Every once and a while you will hear the cheer of joy or the low muttering of a shameful defeat. Man, I love lan parties. I would regularly blow fuses around the turn of the century with a massive group of people playing the original CoD, so it's cool to see J-Lau continue that tradition in what looks like his comfortable household. It's also worth mentioning the four pairs of Turtle Beach X31's and Joe's headset that looks really hardcore. He's the alpha, you can tell. Penn State graduate Phil Davis 'sad' over his alma mater's sex abuse scandal

Penn State graduate Phil Davis knows a thing or two about the Nittany Lions. That's because the UFC light heavyweight racked up a 116-17 record during his collegiate wrestling career, capped off by an NCAA Division I title in 2008. Oh, and he also delivered fruits and veggies to former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. Not surprisingly, Davis hasn't felt very "wonderful" in the wake of his alma mater's sex abuse scandal, which made national headlines following a grand jury report that indicted former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky on 40 counts of child sexual abuse. Davis shares his feelings with MMA Weekly (after the jump): "At the end of the day it’s just sad for the children involved and I hate to see Joe Pa (Joe Paterno) removed because of this, he’s had such a long career and to have someone like him, ultimately, I suspect he’s going to be remembered for the way he left, under these circumstances and that’s really not fair. I think he did what he could. In jobs, we have protocol, and I think he followed protocol. Whether he agreed with decisions that were made, especially in a university job, you really don’t have control over what goes on. If you’re in a law enforcement position and your superior says let so and so go, you’ve got to follow your protocol. You can’t just go ‘this is the law and I want to play this the way I want to play it.’ I feel sorry because justice was not done. Was it at the hands of Joe Paterno? No. Some of the other parties involved, I know them, and they’ve always been good to me, and it’s a shame that they were involved in whatever their involvement was. I feel bad for that situation, but whatever happens kind of happens. I would hate for Joe Paterno to be remembered in such a bad way." Paterno, who is not expected to face criminal charges for his role in the Sandusky scandal, was fired by the Penn State board of trustees for failing to go above and beyond the call of duty. The winningest coach in college football history reported the wrongdoing to his superiors, but failed to alert police and took no action when Sandusky was seen on campus following his initial removal. In short, Penn State is a mess, both from an athletics perspective and from a moral perspective. Heads have started to roll as the University tries desperately to right the ship. Anyone out there agree with Davis? Or did Penn State finally do the right thing? Thoughts?

Boxing legend Joe Frazier dead at 67

Down goes Frazier. Two-time world heavyweight boxing champion "Smokin'" Joe Frazier passed away on Monday night (Nov. 7, 2011) after a battle with liver cancer. He was just 67 years old. The Philadelphia pugilist, who won a gold medal at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, is perhaps best known for his epic trilogy against Muhammad Ali. Our friends at Bad Left Hook break down their rivalry: In February 1970, Frazier picked up the WBC and WBA belts with a win over Jimmy Ellis. And 13 months later, he fought Muhammad Ali for the first time. Frazier and Ali had an epic rivalry that makes today's worst media wars look tame in comparison. Ali's level of trash talk was at times well over the line, in the opinion of many, but Frazier made him pay in their first fight, winning a clear fifteen round decision at Madison Square Garden on March 8, 1971. It was the pinnacle of his career. The two would meet twice more, with Ali winning a 1974 rematch at Madison Square Garden (UD-12), and then arguably the most grueling fight in boxing history in 1975, the famed "Thrilla in Manila." A closer look at the career of "Smokin'" Joe, after the jump. Any Maniacs out there old enough to remember his impact on the "sweet science?"

Smokin' Joe Frazier Passes Away At Age 67

"I don't want to knock my opponent out. I want to hit him, step away and watch him hurt" - Joe Frazier Smokin' Joe Frazier passed away this evening after a battle with liver cancer. Born on January 12, 1944, Frazier would win an Olympic gold medal in 1964 and would win the world heavyweight championship during his spectacular professional career. Smokin' Joe is likely best remembered for his trilogy of fights with Muhammad Ali. It's hard to write one of these articles on a site like this and not speak with any personal feelings. Frazier was always something of a larger than life figure in my head. One of the reasons I got into combat sports was my great grandfather telling me stories of the greats. Specifically he loved to talk about Muhammad Ali, including the stories of the Ali/Frazier battles. It built Frazier into a titan in a young man's mind. As I grew up and actually saw footage of Frazier boxing, it was clear what a monster he was in the ring. His skills as a boxer often get overlooked, and it's not hard to understand why. Frazier had a left hook that melted his foes when it landed. Frazier was one of the best the sport of boxing has ever seen and rather than be depressed over his passing, I suggest we all take a few minutes to remember him on top of the world: Rest in peace, Smokin' Joe.

Lauzon signs sponsorship deal with Gamma Labs

UFC Lightweight Joe Lauzon has signed a sponsorship deal with Gamma Labs. Coming off of winning one of the UFC’s first twitter bonuses, the supplement company is looking to capitalize on Lauzon’s rising popularity and social media saviness. The sponsorship deal will go beyond the normal fight short placement and focus on viral videos, social media and Lauzon’s interest of video games. According to Lauzon’s manager, Oren Hodak, Gamma Labs will do some cross promotional gaming spots with Punch Drunk Gamer, another one of Lauzon’s sponsors. Via Gamma Labs press release: This partnership will utilize Lauzon’s rapidly growing fan-base through new media platforms and will support Gamma Labs’ new Pre-Training Formula through special appearances, making an immediate impact with new consumers. “Working with an athlete like Joe who is very active on social media brings incredible value to a sponsor. As a top ranked fighter and video game competitor Joe is a perfect fit for Gamma Labs,” said Lauzon’s manager Oren Hodak of Knock Out Representation. Hodak continues saying, “Joe’s been using Gamma Labs’ products for several months and is benefiting from the increased focus and energy that he gets from PTF.” A number of unique viral videos, social media and online gaming contests will feature Joe in 2012. Lauzon boasts a twitter following that just surpassed 44,000 followers. Payout Perspective: This is a win-win for fighter and sponsor. The deal includes Lauzon’s interest of being a gamer which helps his personal brand. It also goes beyond the normal one-off sponsorship on fight nights. We’ve seen a rise of more fighters and sponsors engaging in promotions outside of the octagon which is key for the growth of the athlete-sponsor dynamic in MMA. While it may not be the lucrative endorsement contracts of other sports such as the NFL or major league baseball, its a start. We’ll see how many more of this will happen as the UFC-Fox partnership evolves.

Joe Lauzon tells us he loves being the official ‘spoiler’ in the lightweight division

Sure Joe Lauzon dropped and subbed Melvin Guillard, a fighter who was literally a step away from competing for the UFC lightweight belt, but let's just hope Joe Lauzon made the wise decision to choose Battlefield 3 over Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for his military first person shooters. Technically, he could purchase both games, but if he's not a direct decedent of Goro, he's incapable of simultaneously playing each game. Over the weekend, LayzieTheSavage caught up with Joe to see how life was after ruining 95% of every parlay bet at UFC 136. Joe Rogan: "If someone's smart...they buy K-1"

[div class="notice" class2="icon"]The following is from an article on LiverKick.com, part of the MiddleEasy Network.[/div] This is just an interesting tidbit we ran across today from Joe Rogan's podcast where he discusses a lot of fight-related stuff. He talks about how UFC is under investigation with the FTC for being a possible monopoly and that leads into how random it was that MMA caught on like it did. This leads the discussion to sports that have had a hard time of late and Joe Rogan starts talking about K-1 and how if someone like Mark Cuban were to step up to the plate and purchase K-1 that it would be a goldmine. His line of thinking is not in any way far off from how we've been talking and it is a worth a quick listen to hear how passionate he is about it. Read More...

UFC 137 Results: B.J. Penn Retires After Loss to Nick Diaz

B.J. Penn is one of the best fighters the UFC has ever seen and after his UFC 137 loss to Nick Diaz it appears that we will never see him compete again. Penn looked very good in the opening round against Diaz but faded as Nick turned up the pressure in the second and third round. In the post fight interview with Joe Rogan, Penn said that he is ready to retire. Penn told Rogan "Hats off to Nick Diaz. He's the man. Joe, this was probably the last time you'll see me in here. I can't keep performing at the top level. That's it Joe. I got a daughter and another daughter on the way, I don't want to go home looking like this. I'm done." Penn remains one of only two men, along with Randy Couture, to win UFC titles in multiple weight classes. Penn made his professional MMA debut at UFC 31 and became one of the sport's biggest stars, capturing the welterweight title from Matt Hughes in a shocking fight at UFC 46. He would never actually lose that title, instead leaving the UFC for two years. At UFC 80 he captured the UFC lightweight title with a win over Joe Stevenson, a title he would defend three times before losing it to Frankie Edgar. After tonight, Penn had only won one of his previous five bouts and decided it was time to step away from the sport. Bloody Elbow will have much more on the card and the great career of B.J. Pen in the coming days. SBN coverage of UFC 137 Results: Penn vs. Diaz

Alright, so Joe Son may have killed his cellmate...

Everyone at MiddleEasy has been avoiding this story like some horrible and incurable sexual disease. This morning, someone on The Underground posted a rumor that Joe Son killed his cellmate. We caught it on the first page, but it seemed like such an obvious troll attempt that we just decided to follow it and see if it went anywhere throughout the day. At first, the story seemed to be confined to the thread, yet the person who broke the news insisted that it was true. We continued to do whatever everyone at MiddleEasy does during the day, and then Sherdog issued a 'report' that used The Underground thread as a legit 'source.' It seemed somewhat naive at the time, a news leader like Sherdog using the testimony of a poster on The Underground as evidence, but we should have taken more notice. Now it appears that they were right all along. Joe Son is suspected of murdering his cell mate -- and the story just continues to get even more nuttier. The LA Times is now reporting (from a press release issued by The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation) that Joe Son is suspected of murdering his 50-year-old cellmate, who was found dead inside the Wasco State Prison Reception Center in Kern County on Monday night. The victim was a convicted sex offender that received two years in prison for failing to register as a sexual offender. Currently, prison officials are investigating the murder, and it's rumored the victim met his demise through a modified blade smuggled into the area. Once the investigation is complete, we should know more about the killing, but at the moment, all signs point to Joe Son. My, oh my -- how the Mighty Joe Young has fallen. That's a movie reference, and if I didn't inform you of that, the statement would have just seemed ridiculous and highly ill-placed. [Source]

Jailed UFC veteran 'Joe Son' suspected of killing prison inmate

Rape, torture, homicide ... is there anything this guy can't do? Former UFC punching bag Joseph Hyungmin Son, who is serving a life sentence after being convicted of torture in a brutal gang rape case, is now under suspicion for killing his cellmate at California's Wasco State Prison on Oct. 10, 2011. The story first surfaced earlier today on The Underground with a chilling account from "SoCal PriznGard:" Ex UFC fighter, Joe Son has murdered his cellmate. While serving a life sentence for gang rape, Joe Son has been attacked several times by other inmates who do not tolerate rapists in prison. It has not yet been determined why he killed his cellmate or how ... Joe and dead guy only ones in cell together. Guard doing count, sees celly is unresponsive, medical arrives. CPR performed. Celly has trauma to chest area. Pronounced dead. Innocent until proven guilty but looks like he did it. These are the only facts that I have right now. Investigation still in progress since it just happened on Monday around 5:00 pm. Now the Wasco Litigation Department has sent out a press release (via Cage Potato) confirming the inital report, which you can view after the jump. Officials from Wasco State Prison-Reception Center (WSP-RC) and the Kern County District Attorney's Office are investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide. The inmate, whose name is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin, was found dead in his cell about 5:50 p.m. October 10, 2011. The 50-year-old inmate was received at WSP-RC from San Luis Obispo County on June 23, 2011, as a parole violator with a new term for failure to register as a sex offender. He received a 2-year sentence. Joseph Son, 40, has been identified as a suspect in the case. Son was received at WSP-RC from Orange County on September 16, 2011, on a life sentence with the possibility of parole for torture. "Joe Son" (0-4), also known to non-MMA fans as "Random Task" from Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, is probably best known in the fight community for having his balls demolished by Keith Hackney back at UFC 4 en route to a first round submission loss. C'mon, Son. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for future updates to this still-developing story.

UFC 136 results recap: Joe Lauzon vs Melvin Guillard fight review and analysis

47 seconds. That's how long it took for Melvin Guillard's hype train to get completely derailed last night (October 8, 2011) and for a potential title shot to slip through his fingers.  Nearly everyone and their momma picked Guillard to not only win that fight, but to win via knockout in the first round. So how did Joe Lauzon pull off the upset at UFC 136 despite being a 3-1 underdog according to most gambling sites? What glaring mistake did Guillard make that "J-Lau" took advantage of to help him seize victory? And what in the world do we do with both fighters now? From the way he talked about getting the fastest knockout in UFC history, how he stated Lauzon wilts under pressure, it was apparent that Guillard fully expected to steamroll Joe Lauzon last night. He exploded out of the gate throwing heavy power strikes with every punch attempted, even throwing a flying knee early and then dropping both hands to flex and taunt the Bostonian on the way out. When Guillard dropped both hands to throw another heavy lead left hook that seemed to be so looping that it started from below his belt line, Lauzon simply beat him to the punch with a short left hand right to the nose that temporarily stunned him. You can see how completely exposed Guillard was in this position, giving up all his defense in an effort to put everything he had into his punch. Guillard is absolutely stunned when Lauzon hit him, even though it wasn't the most powerful strike in the world.  Joe Lauzon is the type of fighter that does everything at 100 miles an hour. When he staggered Guillard with that left hand, he immediately went in for the kill, chasing "The Young Assassin" down.  When Guillard left himself exposed in a sprawl attempt, Lauzon immediately took advantage and spun to his back, getting both hooks in within seconds.  Notice how quickly Lauzon transitions to take advantage of his opponent's weakened state, latching on a rear naked choke, rolling Guillard over and putting his hips into the submission to make it even tighter. Before Guillard even realizes what is happening, he's finding himself tapping out to a man that he was absolutely certain he would be rendering unconscious that night. For Melvin Guillard, things couldn't get much worse. Many were talking about him being next in line for a title shot but that's completely out the window now. He had all the tools to keep this fight standing against Lauzon and blast him with his superior power but he blew it by not taking his opponent seriously. Perhaps the hype got to his head but Guillard had no respect for Joe Lauzon's striking last night and it cost him dearly. You can't drop your defenses against anyone, especially a man like Joe Lauzon who's famous for blitzing people in the first round. If the UFC brass still see Guillard as a viable title contender, he'll get a tough fight next against someone like Gray Maynard or perhaps Jim Miller. If they want to rebuild him again, he could get someone like the loser of the upcoming Donald Cerrone vs. Dennis Siver fight or Ross Pearson. Either way, he hurt his chances for contending in 2012 dearly last night. Give all the credit in the world to Joe Lauzon. He remained composed early when Guillard was throwing heavy power strikes in his direction and not only weathered the storm but fired back and connected. Lauzon didn't waste any time either. When he had Guillard hurt, he swarmed him and took care of business. That's how a fighter is supposed to handle themselves in the cage. It was the biggest victory in his career, by far, much bigger than the Jens Pulver upset in his UFC debut.  The next logical opponent for "J-Lau" would be someone who's also coming off a win who's working their way back to the top of the division, someone like Anthony Pettis or fellow Ultimate Fighter season five castmate Matt Wiman. If the UFC is really high on him, they could throw him in against the winner of the upcoming Donald Cerrone vs. Dennis Siver fight. Either way, Lauzon has officially arrived. So what did you think, Maniacs? Was Lauzon the better fighter? Or did Guillard let a golden opportunity slip through his fingers by taking a fighter lightly? Sound off! Joe Lauzon just shocked the entire friggin’ MMA world

Before Joe Lauzon vs. Melvin Guillard went down at UFC 136, I mentioned that according to 'Demolition Man,' the last murder in California happened on September 25, 2010. If Melvin Guillard is MMA's equivalent of Simon Phoenix, then tonight was Joe Lauzon was undoubtedly Sly Stalonne -- but with enlarged ears. Seriously, if some sage decended to earth and told you that Joe Lauzon would outstrike Melvin Guillard so much that he would get rocked, then effortlessly rear naked choke him in the first round -- then you would obviously have to believe whatever that guy says for the rest of your life. You would most likely get that guy's phone number and ask him what the lottery numbers are for tonight. Props to Reddit's own Joe Lauzon on jumbling up the lightweight picture even more than what it already is. Now that Melvin Guillard's potential title shot has been delayed, this can only pave the way for Gilbert Melendez to get a shot against the winner of Edgar vs. Maynard. Or at least LayzieTheSavage hopes it will.

UFC 136: Joe Lauzon Submits Melvin Guillard in 47 Seconds

Filed under: UFCIn a significant upset in the UFC's lightweight division, Joe Lauzon stunned Melvin Guillard on Saturday night at UFC 136, needing just 47 seconds to force him to tap. Guillard came out swinging hard as he usually does, but it was Lauzon who surprised Guillard by landing a hard left hand of his own to Guillard's chin, sending Guillard staggering backward. From there it was Lauzon's fight: He pounced on him, sunk in the rear-naked choke and forced Guillard to tap the canvas. It was the biggest win of Lauzon's career. More Coverage: UFC 136 Results | Joe Lauzon vs. Melvin Guillard Live Blog The victory improves Lauzon's record to 21-6, with 17 of his wins coming by submission. The loss drops Guillard to 29-9-2, with eight of his losses coming by submission. There had been a great deal of talk leading up to the fight that Guillard was closing in on a lightweight title shot. Now it may be time to wonder if Lauzon is getting close to a crack at the title. Lauzon puts on good shows, finishes fights, and now he has a victory over a Top 10 opponent. This was a big-time win for Lauzon. %VIRTUAL-Gallery-136100% Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Joe Lauzon says submissions are Guillard's kryptonite

As a self proclaimed gamer, I was distressed to hear that J-Lau was dedicated to CoD as his shooter of choice. Today relief washed over me in a wave over pure nerdiness when Sherdog reported that Joe Lauzon will be purchasing both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 this fall. Nice. When Battlefield 3 drops on October 25th, Joe will have two full weeks of Battlefield goodness to steer him to the light side of the force before COD hits November 8th. More than likely he will claim that BF3 was fun, but he will convert back to CoD. Then, slowly but surely he will realize how far superior of a shooter BF3 is and will yearn to get behind the flightstick of an F-16, and it will be good. Before Joe worries about his first person shooters he has a Young Assassin to focus on. Tonight at UFC 136 Joe will face the biggest test of his career in the Jackson trained lightweight contender Melvin Guillard. The fact that everyone expects J-Lau to lose doesn't worry him, Joe thinks Melvin's kyptonite is something he has plenty of: submissions. “All the pressure is on him from the start,” Lauzon said. “Going into this fight, he’s the betting favorite, he’s the favorite in this fight.  He’s the guy coming off five-to-six wins; he’s the guy pining away for a title shot, the guy calling himself the champ.  All the pressure is on him. “If I go out there and lose the fight, well you know what, Melvin was supposed to beat me, but there is a huge upside in the fact that I could go out there and win.  For him, it’s all downside.  He’s supposed to beat me, but I think I’m always dangerous, I’m always a submission threat, so it’s a tough fight for him too, especially when his kryptonite has always been submissions.” “There’s no better way to get knocked out than to be scared to punch and just shoot from too far away.  It’s how close can you put the hand to the flame before you get burned and that’s going to be thing with Melvin. We’re not going to shoot from a mile away; we’re going to have to make our way in and deal with him like that. “The last time that, that was the game plan was back at the Pulver fight.  A guy that was thought to have much better stand-up than me and we’re going to look to throw a couple of punches and get inside because we’re worried about the power and then we ended up knocking him out.  I did a lot of boxing, I did a lot of wrestling, and I did a lot of jiu-jitsu, so wherever the fight goes, I’m going to be ready to go.” [source]

If Joe Palooka found the Infinity Gauntlet in the comic book universe he resides in, this entire series would be over in three pages. It's the most powerful item ever created in any work of fiction, and despite what you may have seen in the new Captain America movie, the fact still remains the Infinity Gauntlet's power far surpasses the Cosmic Cube. It's not even comparable. Unfortunately, Joe Palooka does not possess the device. The only thing he has is his undying desire to knock other people out. Joe Palooka is the world's first MMA comic book and the first two issues launched this morning. The official site is offering a free preview of the first fifteen pages and a deal on the online issues. However, we've posted two pages if you're too lazy to redirect your cursor to their site and check it out for yourself.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney Breaks Down Bellator 51 Bantamweight Tournament

Filed under: MMA Fighting Exclusive, BellatorUFC 135 might be taking all the attention away from Bellator 51, but Saturday's Bantamweight Tournament opening round lineup is arguably one of Bellator's strongest main cards on paper. I recently caught up with Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney to talk about the storylines heading into Saturday's card. Check out the Q&A below. Quarterfinal #1: Alexis Vila vs. Joe Warren RH: Both men hold world-class wrestling credentials. Do you see one outwrestling the other or do you think the fight ends up being determined on the feet? BR: You'd be hard pressed to think one of these two guys will outwrestle the other. Warren is a two-time world champion; Vila's got an Olympic bronze medal. My natural assumption would be that their wrestling will cancel each other out and it's going to be a striking battle. I think it's going to be the question of the evolution of Joe Warren's striking. RH: There are certain variables, though, that could potentially give Warren the edge. Warren, the 145-pound champ, is looking for a two-division reign, while Vila arguably belongs in the 125-pound weight class. Another factor is that Vila is 40 years old, an age where fighters tend to be far removed from their explosive peak. BR: Man, that's a tough call. If you've watched Vila's fights, he has been wildly explosive. The funny thing is that a lot of wrestlers rely on their takedowns to set up their punches. He hasn't. He's looked like a wickedly great in-shape puncher with a ton of gas. I don't know. It's an interesting question. He's an interesting specimen. None of these guys are young by any stretch of the imagination, but on the scale of not being young, Vila is a little bit more north of young than Joe Warren, but who knows? I wouldn't want to bet on any specific direction in this fight. We could both be wrong. Warren could be too big and too powerful and could he utilize his relentless style to take Vila down? Quarterfinal #2: Eduardo Dantas vs. Wilson Reis RH: At 22, the Shooto South American champion Dantas could be one of the hottest prospects, but he hasn't really faced top flight competition under Shooto Brazil. With an always gamer in Reis, I think this fight is Dantas' first big league test. Would you agree with that assessment? BR: I would except for the long sitdown I had with Marlon Sandro talking about this and what Jose Aldo had to say about him. Sandro and Aldo are two of the greatest featherweights in the earth and both said this kid is absolutely a phenom. I asked Sandro, "Where do you think he matches up?" And Sandro's answer was, "I don't know anyone in the world right now who could beat him." The confidence his team has in him is at an elite, elite level. Now, has he faced world-class competition yet? No, he hasn't and Wilson dropping back down to 135 where he was at an elite level and this is the weight where he's enjoyed the vast majority of his success as a jiu-jitsu player. It's be a great test for Dantas and it'll be a real eye-opener for us in terms of where Dantas matches up. If Dantas can beat Reis at this weight, it speaks to the fact that all of the accolcates that have been bestowed on Dantas are accurate. If Reis can beat Dantas, then Reis has found his right weight and perhaps can accomplish all that which he hasn't been able to accomplish under the Bellator banner at 145. The Future of Joe Soto RH: Wilson Reis stepped in for Joe Soto, originally slated to fight in this tournament. I know Soto is coming off losses, but since it was on a short notice fight on a lesser known show and after a serious eye injury. Still, I figured with his name value, he would still be an intriguing name in the bracket. Can you talk about the decision-making process to ultimately replace Soto with Reis? BR: The fight that Joe took out of Tachi [Palace Fights] wasn't short notice. Tom called his manager and said to me, "Look, Joe is coming off of a serious eye injury, he hasn't been in the cage in a long time, I want to get him a fight before he comes in the tournament," and really handpicked the guy he wanted to fight, really hand-picked. He wanted Joe to get comfortable back in the cage. And unfortunately, because I'm a huge Joe Soto fan, Joe got dominated in that fight. For whatever reason, it was a very bad night for Joe. And given the amount of time he had to prep and given that his management really handpicked his opponent, we talked. It was kind of a team decision between Joe's management and us; it's not the right time to put him in this tournament. RH: Do you have any current plans for Soto? Perhaps as an alternate? BR: Right now, what we got to do with Soto is determine where his head is and what he wants to do with his career. If his decision is to press forward at 135, we'll get him some off-TV fights and get his feet back under him and not force him into deep waters. Quarterfinal #3: Luiz Nogueira vs. Ed West RH: Of the four fights, I found this one the most ambiguous. I don't really know at what level these guys are at and I'm curious to see how the winner performs in the semfinals. Do you have any inkling how this fight might transpire? BR: I think ambigous is a very good way to put it. There's no one way to look at this fight and say, "If this happens then this will be the result." From the day we signed Ed West, he's been amazingly athletic. He's constantly moving for submission, he has no lay-and-pray in him at all. He's a very exciting fighter. We haven't seen an awful lot of striking out of Ed except Ed seems to be able to seamlessly move from one aspect of the game to the other. Ed West prides as a true martial artist. Maybe striking Nogueira would have a little edge on Ed, but I don't know. Ed's never been forced to strike because everybody we've had in the other 135-pound tournament, Ed mowed down until he ran up against Zach (Makovsky]. Quarterfinal #4: Chase Beebe vs. Marcos Galvao RH: Galvao looked tremendous against Warren and many feel he should have won the decision at Bellator 41 in April. Fighting another wrestling-based opponent, what do you think Galvao needs to do this time around to ensure a victory? BR: I would do very little from the last time he fought. The flying knees, the strikes, the grappling, the ground and pound, everything looked good. There was no part of his game that didn't look great when he last fought under our banner and it was up against our 145 pound champion. In terms of doing anything differently, I wouldn't do too much differently if I were him. Chase comes from a wrestling background, I don't know if I would suggest that Marcos change anything much different. Bellator's Quiet Champion RH: Out of all the Bellator champions, the least recognized would have to be Zach Makovsky. As a promoter, how do you handle the challenge of making him a "name" alongside guys like Eddie Alvarez and Hector Lombard. BR: I think what we've got to do as a company is we've got to provide him with the kind of platform and the kind of fighters that he's deserving of and that's what we're doing here. When this tournament ends, if Zach can beat the guy that comes out of this tournament and retains his title, then we'll be able to complement that with the support mechanism for Zach we've got: Putting him on Impact Wrestling on Spike, get him out there and really try to powerfully support Zach. Just the qualitative level of the guys that are in the tournament will justify a top 3 or 4 ranking on earth and then we'll be able to put the entire power of the machine behind him so that people can go, "Whoa! That's Zach." And it couldn't happen to a better guy. It'll be a pleasure to put that power behind him. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
