MMA fans are so fickle.

I swear MMA has the most fickle fan base, than any other sport. One minute your hopping on band wagons, and sympathizing with a socially awkward guy, next your complaining relentlessly how you wasted money on a $10 card and how you hate Diaz now, despite getting to see Kyra Gracie's ass and a bunch of awesome BJJ fights Am I disappointed I didn't get to see Diaz fight? Hell yea! Am I pissed off at Diaz? Yes! Am I pissed off I spent $10 on the fight? Fuck yea But your turning MMA and BJJ into some weird Wrestling soap opera. Your forgetting why you like MMA, and the fighters that participate in them. You like them because you like how they fight...not because of their behavior. Thats all secondary. I think Nick Diaz is abrasive and unpredictable, but dammit, do I love how he fights. You like MMA because of the fights and the fighters behind them. You want a nice story, and some drama, MMA isn't the sport for you, go watch WWE. Second off, none of you know the entire story! We're getting reports Diaz missed weight, as well as reports that Braulio missed weight. Theres also reports that the promotional company was trying to screw Diaz and he wasn't going to play ball. It's all speculation! So lets hold off on jumping on the "Fuck Diaz" bandwagon, if not for this reason alone. Overall, you got to enjoy a good night of fights. I for one have never seen a BJJ PPV, and thought it was awesome, and I bet most of you haven't either. So get over it. I for one, will continue to be a Nick Diaz fan, despite some of his BS. Bring on the downvotes. submitted by AntiHer0z [link] [12 comments]

Cameras go backstage at UFC on Fuel 2 for Dana White’s latest video blog

It’s been awhile since UFC President Dana White pulled back a card’s curtain by giving fans intimate access behind the scenes with one of his video blogs. Then again, until UFC on Fuel 2 last weekend it had been awhile since the organization had put on an event for White and crew to document. Now, with the Swedish show in the books, White has delivered a vlog featuring glimpses of the fallout from some of the evening’s most memorable bouts. A palate-cleanser of sorts before UFC 145, one of the clip’s best moments comes when an animated Brian Stann talks about his scrap with Alessio Sakara. “That was actually the first fight, no sh*t, that I enjoyed none of the process…the training, nothing,” said Stann while getting his wraps cut off, mentioning his family’s struggles after the untimely death of his brother-in-law. “That guy brings it, man. I thought he was gonna be conservative? F*ck that! I love that guy. That was gonna be either one of us, the way we were chucking,” Stann continued on his match-up with Sakara, impressed by his opponent’s ability to stay in the UFC for as long as he has. Rashad Evans UFC 145 video promo: To live is to fight

"We all fight in different arenas in our life. And I think that's what draws so many people to fighting. It's because it's the actual physical manifestation of the way they feel inside. To me, to live is to fight. It's about perservering. It's about testing yourself. It's about not becoming complacent. It's about feeling alive in the moment because when you're adrenaline is going, you're thinking about that present moment. You're not somewhere else, you're not thinking about what's going to happen 10 minutes from now and that's the reason why I love fighting. When I'm in there, I feel free." Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) keeps bringing the hits with its promo video packages for the upcoming UFC 145: "Jones vs. Evans" event set to take place on Sat., April 21, 2012, at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. It's a good thing, too, considering the major drought of pay-per-view shows we've been suffering through. But that comes to an end soon enough and the marketing and promotional push is heating up considerably. Are we ready to see "Suga" Rashad Evans challenge Jonny "Bones" Jones for the light heavyweight championship or what?

A Lesson in Street MMA: Don't pick on Mark Hunt Jr's buddy

Oh wow! This latest Lesson in Street MMA just made us jump out of our chairs at the MiddleEasy office, exchange high fives and howl in the air like a victorious Rampage Jackson! We've watched this video no less than eight times now and it only keeps getting better. We can't even attempt to keep working now. Day's ruined. The whole staff is tearing apart the office out of shear Street MMA ecstasy. This is the definition of rawesome. This is the definition of baller. This is like baller and rawesome had sex and made the word 'rawbler'. This kid clearly has Super Samoan DNA in him. My god. I can't even write this article in a timely fashion I just keep pressing play on the video and join in with the best Street MMA crowd ever in blowing the lid off the arena. I'm sweating. My hands are shaking. Watch what happens when a kid is birthed onto this planet who will not require six months sprawl training. Future K-1 champ here dropping the one-two in honor of his bullied pal. Yes! I LOVE the contrast between the video still and the banner shot. [Source]

John Cena: “April 1 is truly a clash of two different people.”

John Cena and The Rock may have a handful of things in common but it is their differences that are most prevalent, specifically regarding the grip with which they embrace life as a professional wrestler. While The Rock rocketed to stardom and has blazed a successful Hollywood career in the process, Cena’s popularity afforded him similar opportunities he hasn’t necessarily capitalized on. Cena recently revealed his decision to remain focused on his work in WWE rather than attempting to establish himself as a movie star stems from his love for both his job and the people he’s surrounded by, implying he has no plans to ever leave the squared-circle no matter who might come calling. “I think the day of reckoning for me is when somebody says, ‘Alright, that was your last match.’ And they’re gonna have to say that, you know? Because I don’t ever want to go,” said Cena in an interview set to be featured Monday night on a special documenting the road to Wrestlemania for both stars. “I love the people I work for, I love the company, I love seeing new guys be successful, I love great stories and there so many stories here all the time.” “April 1 is truly a clash of two different people, but I think that’s the attention grabber for (Wrestlemania),” he continued. “It’s because you have someone who exemplifies about this type of person and someone who exemplifies everything about that type of person.” Footage from Cena-Rock Facing Off on RAW Watch the full interview below: PHOTO CREDIT – WWE Tweet

Video profiles rise of UFC on FX 2 flyweights Benavidez, Johnson, and McCall

Call it a Napoleon Complex if you must but UFC flyweights Demetrious Johnson, Ian McCall, and Joseph Benavidez have always enjoyed upsetting their detractors. The adversity the 125ers faced throughout their lives has in part led them to tonight’s UFC tournament in Australia where they’ll compete for the right to land a spot in the organization’s first flyweight title-fight. All three spoke some about their backgrounds, as well as the road they’ve travelled to arrive at UFC on FX 2, in a recent video from the UFC profiling the trio. “A lot of people would tell me that (I) was too small to do certain things. People would be like, ‘You’re too small! Give it up!’ I was like, ‘Whatever…,’ said Johnson, while opponent McCall explained, “I was a tiny little kid. I always wanted to fight, I love fighting. I love beating people up. I love beating up everyone who is bigger than me.” While Benavidez may not have directly been told he was too small to be a professional athlete, he’d never realized it was an avenue he could pursue and actually gave up wrestling during his first year in college. After taking a regular job back home, Benavidez soon discovered Mixed Martial Arts and the rest is history. “I saw people doing this sport around my city of Las Cruces and I was like, ‘I can beat these guys up. Why are these guys fighting?’ Took up MMA and I just love this sport, it became a passion of mine. I was doing it at as a hobby, doing a regular job and doing that after work,” revealed the Team Alpha Male fighter. Before long Benavidez decided he’d found his calling, packed his bags, and headed out West where a chance encounter with Urijah Faber changed his life. UFC on FX 2 starts tonight at 9:00 PM EST and features a main event between welterweights Martin Kampmann-Thiago Alves. Prelims begin at approximately 5:00 PM EST on Facebook/Fuel TV. UFC Quick Quote: Stupid fighters want wars, intelligent fighters want a quick finish

"I love how so many fighter say, I just want a war.. I just listened to a guy who got a quick knockout and then said, I would have rather had a long war. Are you stupid??? I like short fights. If every fight could be quick, Im more than happy with that, but unfortunately its rare. "I just want a war", or "I love getting hit" Really stupid?? Because I dont. Thats why I train, to not get hit & not take damage. This sport is no longer a "tough-man" competition, its a stratigic equation, and most of the time, the more intelligent fighter wins. I don't know about you, but I don't want my brain to be used as a speed bag." UFC welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger, who punched his ticket to bigger and better things within the 170-pound division with a convincing unanimous decision win over Diego Sanchez earlier this month, tells his Facebook fans he's not interested in seeing how many shots he can take, or how long he can stand and bang against his opponents. "The Juggernaut" would much rather implement an effective gameplan, avoid damage and finish the fight as early as possible. Anyone think Ellenberger has the right approach? Or is the "war" mentality why we love so many of the sport's scrappy fighters?

Lorenzo Fertitta pays $1.1 million to buy Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves and hear Bob Arum say 'I love the UFC'

How much did it cost ZUFFA co-owner and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) CEO Lorenzo Fertitta to hear fossilized fight promoter Bob Arum say "I love the UFC?" Around $1.1 million. The whopping payout also scored him a pair of Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves. Not just any old pair, either, but the same ones he used to defeat Floyd Patterson in their 1965 heavyweight title fight in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to ESPN.com. Fertitta was on hand for the red carpet fundraiser, held at "Sin City's" MGM Grand Resort and Casino, to honor Ali's 70th birthday, as well as raise money for brain research, including the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky. "The Greatest" has been fighting Parkinson's disease for almost 30 years. So, how does Arum factor into the equation? "Bigot Bob," who in the past referred to UFC fighters as juiced-up homosexual skinheads, was forced to drop his usual anti-MMA tirade and play nice during the auction, because Fertitta would only raise his bid for the famous gloves, which at the time was approaching $750,000, if Arum openly admitted he loved the UFC. He did, and Fertitta immediately tweeted his moral and financial victory. The star-studded affair, which attracted over 2,000 attendees along with a who's-who of celebrities and sports stars, will air this Saturday night (Feb. 25, 2012) on ABC and ESPN.

Demian Maia: “If you think like a white belt, you can keep getting better.”

While Demian Maia may be primarily known for his elite-level submission skills there’s no question the 34-year old grappler has shown marked improvement as a striker in his last few fights, the most recent of which involved a decision win over Jorge Santiago at UFC 136. Maia credits his mindset and love of boxing with the evolution in his game, an increasingly balanced attack he hopes to display against Chris Weidman on Saturday night at UFC on FOX 2. The 15-3 BJJ blackbelt discussed the situation where he explained he often removes ego from the equation and embraces challenges head on. “For me, it’s not hard because I love what I do and I love to fight,” revealed Maia in a conversation with the UFC’s website. “I love boxing also, and not just jiu-jitsu, so whenever you do something that you love, it’s never hard work. Of course the training and everything is tough, but what I do I like very much and when you’re like that I think you develop very well.” The Brazilian feels his attitude towards striking is one some of his peers could benefit from as well. “I see some guys that are standup fighters and they’ve been doing jiu-jitsu for many years and they’re still not so good, and there are some jiu-jitsu guys that do standup for many years and they’re not so good, and the key is that they don’t like the other style,” said Maia. “Sometimes they don’t like to train other styles and sometimes they don’t like to go from being the best at what they do to learning something else and there’s an ego involved there. If you think like a white belt, you can keep getting better. And when I decide to do something, I know that I will do it hard and I will get it.” See how his humility pays off this weekend when he meets Weidman in the opener of the 8:00 PM EST broadcast on FOX. UFC Sweden Sells Out In Three Hours

The UFC has been mulling going to Sweden for a long time, and after hearing about this, they must be wondering why they put this off for so long. They put out a release over the weekend stating that tickets for UFC on Fuel 2, which will take place in the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden (which is awesome, by the way) sold out in three hours. "People have been telling me how big of a market Sweden was for the UFC and today, the fans went out and proved it," UFC President Dana White said. "I love taking the UFC to new markets. I can’t wait to get to Stockholm in April because we’re going to put on a great event!" The card will see top Swedish light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson take on Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the main event, and will feature a variety of other Scandinavian fighters. MMA Fighters Sound Off on Rio Fans

The UFC was greeted back to Brazil with open arms, as the Brazilian fans enthusiastically showed why the UFC should return more often. UFC heavyweight champion Junir Dos Santos’ statements regarding the Brazilian fans: “It feels so great to be with the fans in Rio. I’ve only been champion for a short time, but this feeling (of support) will never get old. I love it. This is the first big UFC event of the year and it’s very important for us in Brazil, the fans in America and people everywhere.” Featherweight champion Aldo also only had great things to say about his fellow country men. “Wow! The way the fans were chanting my name, cheering, trying to get pictures with me, it was incredible. Everyone knows my story, how I grew up, and to make it to this type of stage feels great. Chad Mendes is a tough challenger, but this is the fight I’ve wanted for a long time. He’s the number one contender and I love the challenge.” Even Mendes, an American fighter facing off against the beloved featherweight champion, received good fan support: “I was surprised by how supportive the fans were. I didn’t expect to receive the cheers and I appreciated it. I think the fans realize how important this fight is for the featherweight division, for the UFC and for the sport. I’m ready to go and I know Jose is. I can’t wait to do this.” The UFC has a long list of high-caliber Brazilian fighters — and a dedicated MMA fan base that is only growing — so it’s not a surprise to see the No. 1 MMA promotion again saw such a high turn out of Brazilian fans.

There’s no reason why War Machine vs. Karl Amoussou shouldn’t be a violent bloodfest

It seems as if the MMA world is coming up on an entire generation of viewers that have not even dived down the War Machine vortex, so let me give you TUF n00bs a small preface. War Machine. Not that War Machine, but this War Machine. The War Machine formally known as Jonathan Koppenhaver. You may remember seeing him on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra in which he depressed half of America by telling a story of how when he was 14, War Machine tried to give CPR to his dad, was unsuccessful, and pretty much watched his father die. After getting cut from the show due to a somewhat controversial decision, War Machine went on to sign a 10-fight contract with the UFC. After getting offered names like Brandon Wolff, Mr.Machine (we're serious, that's his legal last name) told Joe Silva that he needed better competition and he wasn't going to fight until he could bang against the big namers. After War Machine's blog post in which he wished someone would place a bullet between Barack Obama's head things started to get pretty hectic. He was dropped from the UFC and was somehow cut from Bellator before he even fought. Seeing that his MMA career was somewhat in shambles, War Machine did the only logical thing to make financial ends meet: Become a porn star. In fact, here's a direct quote from an interview we conducted with War Machine a couple years ago. I think from now on I'll be focusing on the porn. I'm still going to fight because that's my passion. I love to fight and I realized that I've probably blew my chances of ever going back to the UFC. But I can still main event all medium sized shows all across the country and the world. But I'm still going to fight, two or three times a year. That's what I love to do, I love beating people up, I want to fight, I want to train, I want to get better. I'm still going to be training. Everything seemed to be going fantastic until War Machine flipped the 'Kill Mode' switch on at a porn industry party and made his 'pimp hand' apparent to every guy there. War fled the scene, and a couple days later the police issued a notice that he became a fugitive and should be considered 'armed and dangerous.' He eventually settled whatever problems he had, then War Machine told us he was in the process of 'cleaning up his life.' Exactly 48 hours after our second interview with War Machine, the guy was back in prison for assaulting a man outside a San Diego night club. The incident resulted in War Machine being locked up inside a San Diego county jail for a year, and now eighteen months later, War announced he's facing Karl Amoussou on a Bellator event slated for March 30th. Whew, what a voyage down MMA nostalgia.

Rousimar Palhares: “What I love is to fight.”

When middleweight Rousimar Palhares enters the Octagon next weekend at UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes he will do so as a relative mystery to American fans, at least outside of his reputation as a powerful grappler with a penchant for procuring devastating submissions. However, the UFC has released a video documenting some of Palhares’ preparation for his bout against Mike Massenzio, giving a revealing look at the enigmatic Brazilian’s life and mindset. “I always had to do things against my will. Now, when I’m in the Octagon, I’m doing what I love. What I love is to fight,” Palhares explains in the clip. “Everything I went through helped me a lot. Back in the day I was forced to do all kinds of hard labor. Pick beans, clean the cows, cut the tall grass. I’ve had so many hard times and I thought it was bad. But I had to do it. Now I fight, it’s what I like, I love doing it, (and) I’ve dedicated my life to it. You can see when I am in there, for me there is nothing is better.” “I can’t tell you how great it is and how grateful I am to be fighting here in Brazil,” Palhares continued before expressing his belief he’s improved as both a fighter and human being since the last tiem fans saw him. “I’m to present the best show I can present. Do you know why? Because I want people to believe what I believe. If I have made it, and few have, it takes a lot of character. Everyone can change for the better. That’s what you’ll see on the 14th.” A Look at Palhares Confusing-at-Times but Ultimately Victorious Performance at UFC 134 Palhares-Massenzio will take part on the main card alongside PPV headliner Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes. Whoops, Spike accidentally used UFC's graphics for Bellator

In my attempt to obtain my Bellator fix before anyone else on the planet, my laptop traversed to Spike.com in order to watch the prelims for tonight's card and I was greeted to a UFC 'Event will begin shortly' screen. A few minutes later, the guys at Spike changed the graphical placeholder to represent the actual promotion in which the prelim fights were being held, but I managed to grab a screen capture of the mishap before it was fixed. Now, on to finishing this bowl of acai berry. Ah, who am I kidding -- I'm wrist deep in pork rinds, and I love it.

Matt Hughes unsure about future beyond UFC 135

When the curtain drops this weekend on Matt Hughes’ co-headlining clash with Josh Koscheck it may mark the final time the iconic UFC welterweight steps foot inside the Octagon. Though the 37-year Hughes hasn’t said he’ll retire with a loss to Koscheck, he certainly hasn’t committed to fighting beyond UFC 135 even with a win in Denver. The UFC Hall of Fame member elaborated on his plans yesterday in a conference call with media where he also made it a point to mention the match-up was the last on his current UFC contract. Hughes also explained that his wife was urging him to hang his gloves up but regardless he planned on re-evaluating the situation after facing Koscheck, as well as getting the opinion of “D-Dubya” and his other bosses in the UFC, before making a final decision. If the 45-8 Hughes does retire it will certainly be a difficult decision no matter how the fight with Koscheck turns out. “I consider myself a lucky man. I love going to the gym twice every day. I love traveling with my buddies,” he said while adding he is still driven by the desire to compete. The admission of uncertainty where his fighting future is concerned is no doubt music to Koscheck’s ears in the sense he could potentially retire an opponent he’s already amped to humble. Koscheck Ready to Put Hughes in his Place Saturday night will be the 24th appearance in the Octagon in Hughes’ decade-long stint in the UFC. Among his eighteen instances of success inside the famous eight-sided cage are wins over Renzo Gracie, Sean Sherk, Georges St. Pierre, Matt Serra, Chris Lytle, and BJ Penn. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC Tweet

Matt Hughes Unsure of Future Ahead of Final Fight on Contract at UFC 135

Matt Hughes will complete his current contract with the UFC when he faces Josh Koscheck at UFC 135, but the former welterweight champion said Monday that the result of Saturday’s co-main event won’t determine whether he keeps fighting. “The outcome of this fight doesn’t really matter, to be honest,” Hughes said during a UFC 135 media call. “After this fight, win or lose, I’ll talk to the UFC and we’ll figure out what we’re gonna do. My wife tells me I’m done fighting.” Hughes (46-8) scored three-straight wins before suffering a 21-second knockout to BJ Penn in November, but is taking it one fight at a time as the competition has kept him from calling it a career. “It’s competition. That’s what drives the top athletes in the UFC. They love getting in there against one other person and mixing it up,” Hughes said. “The fact that it’s just me and one other person competing in there, that’s my drive. I love going to the gym every day, twice a day. I love traveling with my buddies. All in all, it’s a great lifestyle.” Hughes will face a late-replacement, but top-level opponent in Koscheck, who replaced an injured Diego Sanchez to make his return to the Octagon nine months after suffering a broken orbital in a loss to welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
