Months after being stabbed in a Bulgarian night club, it appears that Blagoi Ivanov will finally be released from Pirogov hospital in Sofia, Bulgaria. Sofia News Agency site novinite.com reported the news earlier today.
In his first appearance since being stabbed, Ivanov stated that he is determined to return to MMA after he leaves the hospital.
Ivanov has only been able to speak for about a week but doctors believe he will reach a full recovery in six months to a year.
Ivanov and two of his friends were attacked by a group of 8 armed men after a disagreement at a bar in downtown Sofia. When police arrived Ivanov had a critical stab wound under his armpit.
The main suspect in the stabbing, a 23 year old known as Dampela, is being held under permanent detention.
Ivanov is perhaps best known as the man who dethroned Fedor Emelianenko in Combat SAMBO. Ivanov had been a semifinalist in the Bellator heavyweight tournament before having to exit due to injury. Ivanov last fought in December, where he beat Ricco Rodriguez via TKO.

Pat Barry hospital pic after losing to Lavar Johnson at UFC on FOX 3 earlier this evening at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. "HD" took too many "Big" shots and eventually fell down toward the tail end of the first round. Johnson nailed him with about "55 bombs" along the fence, so Barry might consider himself a little lucky. That hospital gown, though, literally adds insult to injury.
Strikeforce light heavyweight Muhammed Lawal has faced some stiff opposition in his career as both a Mixed Martial Artist and collegiate wrestler but none of those fights compare to the one he fought a few weeks ago inside a hospital. Lawal, who intentionally kept his situation on the down-low, found himself in the midst of a serious medical situation due to a staph infection.
While the 31-year old former champion had dealt with staph infection before, this particular case involved a knee he had recently undergone an operation on.
“I had an ACL replacement again, but that wasn’t a big deal. I think what got me was the micro-fracture surgery. The micro-fractures got infected with staph, and I ended up in the hospital for about twelve days,” said Lawal in an interview with CagePotato. “I didn’t want people to know I was in the hospital, so if people texted me, I didn’t tell them. I was in pain and damned near dying. They gave me morphine. It was crazy. I was trying to keep it normal, and get back to the people that were texting me, telling them that I was okay, so that it wouldn’t get out that I was in the hospital.”
Lawal Responds to Allegations of Steroid Use
He said he first noticed things were wrong during the UFC on FOX 2 weekend when his leg felt “hot” and he had developed a number of lumps in his knee. Lawal spoke to his doctor who drained the knee, tested the “Ghostbusters ectoplasm” out, and discovered the infection. Lawal was then rushed to the hospital where he underwent five separate procedures before things were finally resolved.

We here at Fightlinker haven't always been the biggest fans of King Mo. He thinks too highly of himself! He dares soil the sacred cage canvas with energy drinks! Basic bitchy fan gripes. So while we might take a little bit more enjoyment than we should when he gets starched like he did by Rafael Cavalcante, recent news that Mo had some crazy flesh eating staph had us concerned for his health. Hey, we're still humans here at Fightlinker. Except Grappo, he is a hologram. Anyways, here's the rumor that was going around two days ago on twitter:
Pretty scary sounding jazz right there. Luke Thomas got Mo on his SirusXM radio show to find out if the dill really was as pickle as it sammiched. Sorry, I'm eating lunch right now. POUR THAT MUSTARD ON US, MO:
All this happened like three weeks ago but I didn't tell nobody. I was in the hospital with people texting me and I was trying to keep it like nothing was going on so there wouldn't be any red flags. But what happened was I had surgery after the fight. I had ACL and microfracture. The ACL wasn't a big deal but the microfracture was a bigger deal in my cartilage. One of the sutures got infected and I had to go to the hospital the day after the Rashad Evans/Phil Davis fight. I got blood taken out of my knee and taken to a lab. I was at my manager's crib...Mike Kogan's crib and all of the sudden my doctor's like 'hey, you've gotta come to the hospital right now'. And this is right after Chael won. So I went to the hospital before the Rashad Evans/Phil Davis fight and I watched the fight at the hospital. Then went into the surgery spot and woke up with the PICC line in my arm and they were telling me I would be in there till Monday. I figured I'd go in there and clear my knee out and I'd be out the same night or the next night but I was in there till Monday. Then they checked out my knee again and took the temperature and the knee was still hot and swelling up. They decided to take me back into surgery to do another flush procedure to get the staph infection out. In twelve days I had five procedures to remove the staph and I'm staph free now. But now they've pushed IV medicine through my PICC line that's connected to my heart through my arm every day for six weeks. This is the toughest thing I've ever experienced in my life. The harded that I've experienced in my life. Spiritually and emotionally, man I'll put it like this. I'm not religious at all. I was born to a Muslim family. Man this had me thinking I had to purchase the Quran and get back to my faith and start having more talks with Allah. Seeing my teammates come see me, it broke me down a few times man. Coach Mendez came and saw me a lot. Coach Bob, Paul Buentello, Dan Cormier...people on the team. Jermain Ramsey and Jenna...Phil. I just had so many people contact me and come through it was tough man. It pushed me. Mentally I'll be a stronger person. I know I'll be stronger and I'll be a better fighter.
Anyone who's seen pictures of Kevin Randleman's staph scarred body knows how crazy staph can get, especially the super staph floating around the MMA world. I remember a few years ago there were creepy breakouts at all the major gyms and fights getting cancelled left and right (or worse, still being allowed to happen with gaping wounds exposed). Here's hoping Mo fully recovers ... I want him to be the same fighter he was before so I can continue to hate on him and cheer for him to lose.
Recently on twitter there has been a discussion of the recent health issues of former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion "King" Muhammed Lawal. Following his fight with Lorenz Larkin at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs Jardine, Lawal removed himself from twitter and the public eye due to a positive test for a substance called Drostanolone. It was on Sunday that several people on twitter started to talk about the whereabouts of Lawal and the rumored health issues he was dealing with prior to his fight with Larkin.
Luke Thomas and R.J. Clifford of SiriusXM's Fight Club had the opportunity to speak with Lawal on their show on Monday to try and get the Strikeforce star to open up about his medical issues. Lawal addressed the rumors and confirmed that he had been dealing with not just another ACL tear but a dangerous bout with staph. The staph had spread to a point that it was amputation was discussed as a way to treat the infection.
Below is a transcript:
Alright here's the thing. All this happened like three weeks ago but I didn't tell nobody. King Mo has experienced one of the scariest moments of his life when he could have lost much more than just his career. Listening to him speak, his voice and words were that of a man with a different outlook on life and one that recognizes how fragile life truly is. I hope that he uses this as a way to motivated himself to be the best person that he could possibly be, not just as a fighter, but also as a man. He has an opportunity to become something much more than an entertaining fighter and hopefully he realizes his potential.
I know I speak for the staff at Bloody Elbow when I say that I hope that Lawal has a speedy recovery.
Junie Browning is still on the run.
In a follow-up to last week’s news that he managed to become the target of the Thai police and mafia following a bar and hospital brawl, Browning has sent The Phuckett Gazette a detailed account of his story along with an update on his whereabouts.
The story is far too long to re-post here, but the gist is Browning claims he was jumped by the bar owner and several other attackers for unknown reasons which resulted in Junie taking a vicious beating and getting a thick glass beer mug broken over his head (Junie included the above pic for proof). Another altercation erupted at the hospital when the bar owner and the man that struck him with the mug were placed in hospital beds next to him (it’s unclear why they were in the hospital though since Junie claims earlier in his story that all his attackers remained unharmed at the bar). Things settled down after the fight was broken up and the men were separated, but then Junie says he received several calls from “reliable sources” claiming that the Thai mafia “put a price on his head” and were on there way to the hospital. Browning took the threat seriously and decided to run which leads us to this next part that sounds like it was taken out of a movie:
Our first thought was to get a hold of the police for protection, but were told that it was corrupt and that they would be of no assistance. My girlfriend pulled out my IV and jumped a fence to find a taxi to come pick me up.
…
Being US citizens in a foreign country we were terrified and had to act quickly. With these threats in mind we made a plan. I went to hide while my girlfriend stayed behind to pack and arrange travel out of the city. Keep in mind, we left behind a house we have rented through May, a dog we left in a friend’s care, and numerous personal belongings. Approximately one hour later I was picked up by taxi and we headed out of Phuket. Four hours later we arrived in Krabi to stay the night in a hotel and figure out what to do.
The next day I received two separate phone calls from MJ Castro (which I was informed is not her real name) and Simon Menzies saying that we needed to pay several hundred thousand baht or they would continue to hunt us. In addition, Facebook messages and phone calls flooded in from friends and acquaintances telling us we were in big trouble and needed to get back to the US quickly and, again, to speak to no one.
They instructed us to attempt to cross the Malaysian border and get on the first flight home. At this point we packed again and boarded a mini van to Hatyai. We booked a hotel and paid for two tickets on the 9am bus to Kuala Lumpur, still unsure of what we should do. While in Hatyai, we contacted the US Embassy, still afraid to tell anyone of our location. We did not want to flee the situation, but needed to confide in people we could trust. We were told not to use our phones or internet to avoid any chance of the wrong people discovering our location. I was contacted by a friend from the United States who had previously lived in Bangkok and was able to arrange transport from friends of his with protection to the US Embassy.
To this point I have been unable to seek the medical attention that I desperately need. My vision in my right eye is impaired, I am in severe pain, I am going through fainting and dizzy spells, and have severe head trauma. We had to use the internet to try to figure out how to deal with it on our own. My girlfriend has been dressing my wounds and at night sets an alarm every two hours to wake me up. She asks me simple questions and checks my eyes to make sure I am coherent and stable.
All we are asking for is help from people we can trust which brings us here now. We are victims of a viscous assault and attempt on our lives. We are seeking the assistance of the US Embassy and I want to clear my name of the wrong-doing I was accused of.
I don’t really have anything to add here other than this story is just absolutely nuts and I’m sure this isn’t the end of it.

Junie Browning has been in the MMA news for a week now after his involvement in a brawl in Phuket. The initial report accused him of beating up a woman earlier in the day then then getting in a brawl in a bar and a second brawl in the hospital.
Browning now gave his full account of the story to the Phuket Gazette. It's lengthy but a lot of it is important to get an overall layout of the situation.
Junie's description of the brawl:
I could tell from the moment he stepped in front of me, he was looking for a fight. At this point, it just involved me and Simon, my girlfriend was standing next to us. In only a few seconds, my girlfriend was thrown across the street and I had been hit from behind in the back of the head by a glass beer bottle.
I stood up looking for my attacker and found myself surrounded by a mob of people. It was no longer a man on man "bar brawl" but a fight for my survival. I was trying to defend myself in the street when at some point I fell back to the ground.
They [dragged] me back into the bar where they pummeled me with punches and kicks. It was me against everyone. For a second time I received a massive blow over the head with a thick glass mug that split my head open and made me fall to the floor.
I curled up in the fetal position, submissive, and I continued to be kicked and hit. My arms up covering my face I felt a slice to my forearm and another stab to my neck.
A Thai girl had a knife and was attacking my head with it. I must have lost consciousness from blood loss because the next thing I knew, my girlfriend had sprawled her body on top of mine to protect me from any more blows. She was screaming that it was "enough" and that the fight was over.
Browning says he had to be revived twice in the ambulance and was taken to the hospital where the next part of the story and the "fight in the hospital took place." That and the tale of Junie going into hiding after the jump...
Once at the hospital:
They began to assess my wounds and stitch up the three large gashes on my head. Without any consideration to my safety or the events that had just occurred, they placed both Menzies accompanied by MJ Castro, and the man who had attacked me with a mug, in the beds right beside me.
Needless to say, I became furious and again words were exchanged. As it escalated a second time into a physical fight, MJ attempted to intervene and was struck in the rumble. Security and Patong Police arrived and restrained all parties. I was taken into the waiting lobby on a stretcher in handcuffs in front of numerous people to finish giving me medical attention.
Now, to interject for a moment here. This is one of the inconsistencies in Browning's story. Not that I don't believe him and I fully believe that the evening was probably an insane blur if his account is true. But earlier in the article, Browning says "All of my attackers remained standing in the bar unharmed" so I'm curious why two of them were suddenly brought to the hospital and placed in beds.
Anyway, continuing:
My intentions were to file a police report in the morning and deal with this in a civil manner. Hours later, my phone began to ring with numerous reliable sources stating that we were not safe and we needed to leave now! They said that local Thais and mafia had a price on my head and were headed to the hospital and both my girlfriend's and my life were at risk.
We were told to trust or talk to no one and to just leave. We are aware that the mafia is a real thing and took this very seriously. We panicked and decided that our best option was to escape in the middle of the night and hope we could make it home.
Our first thought was to get a hold of the police for protection, but were told that it was corrupt and that they would be of no assistance. My girlfriend pulled out my IV and jumped a fence to find a taxi to come pick me up.
Browning ends his explanation by saying that they've been on the run from the attackers and the mafia, attempting to get the assistance from the US Embassy while still suffering badly from his injuries. It's a wild tale and at this point all you can hope is that, regardless of who started what, Browning is able to get medical help and the involvement of the Embassy to ensure safe and fair handling of the situation.
Remember Junie Browning? How could you not? He was TUF 8′s resident troublemaker who nearly got kicked off the show for throwing a glass at fellow cast member Shane Primm, then ultimately got kicked out of the UFC for going on a rampage in a hospital after a failed suicide attempt.
We haven’t heard much from Junie since then. Well, at least not until today. It seems Browning hasn’t mellowed out because PhucketWan.com reported today that Browning is the subject of manhunt in Phucket, Thailand for allegedly starting a brawl in a Phucket bar and continuing it in the hospital before fleeing the scene.
Police have named the suspect they wish to interview as Allen Browning, 26, a Thai boxer who fled into the night on Sunday in Patong and has not bee seen since.
Earlier in the night, Mr Browning allegedly was seen beating up on an expat woman in a bar in Patak Road, Karon. He also lashed out at Thai female bar staff when they tried to intervene, police said.
Four other tourists from Australia and the US also attempted to intervene but Mr Browning lashed out at them, too, police said.
The brawling continued when all the participants were taken for treatment at Patong Hospital.
The post seems to have been deleted since, but according to ProMMANow.com, Junie posted his side of the story on Facebook earlier today.
Wow, what a helluva weekend?!.. Some [expletive] named Sie Menzies and about 10 of his friends started a fight with me, I guess just to test a “UFC fighter guy” at his [expletive] little bar in Karan Thailand. Had a beer bottle and glass mug shattered on my head then to make everything better, stabbed severely by some crazy Thai [expletive]. On a positive note I managed to break a few orbital bones, at least a couple jaws and some unconscious bodies laying on the ground before I blacked out from loss of blood and apparently had to be resuscitated in the ambulance. So, how was your weekend?
Browning’s whereabouts are currently unknown.

The Junie Browning saga continues. After a stint on The Ultimate Fighter and a win on the Finale show of that season, Browning lost to Cole Miller and then, later in the year, was involved in a situation where he appeared to take several pills, was taken to a hospital where he ended up hitting some of the nursing staff. He was released from the UFC following the incident.
Now Junie has gotten into quite the issue in Phuket. From PhuketWan.com:
Police have mounted a Phuket-wide hunt for an American man who started one brawl in a Phuket bar then continued it in the emergency treatment ward at Patong Hospital.
Authorities at Phuket International Airport are on the alert for the man.
Police have named the suspect they wish to interview as Allen Browning, 26, a Thai boxer who fled into the night on Sunday in Patong and has not bee seen since.
Earlier in the night, Mr Browning allegedly was seen beating up on an expat woman in a bar in Patak Road Karon. He also lashed out at Thai female staff when they tried to intervene, police said.
Four other tourists from Australia and the US also attempted to intervene but Mr Browning lashed out at them, too, police said. The brawling continued when all the participants were taken for treatment at Patong Hospital.
Browning took to his Facebook attempting to explain:
Junie sounds a little too proud of the situation, doesn't he?
I try my hardest everyday to 'like' Junie Browning. Every day he doesn’t end up in the news is another day I feel closer to that goal. It’s been a long time, almost long enough for me to feel comfortable enough to hit the “Like” button on his fan page, but then he drops this in his Facebook status and we’re right back to where we started:
“Wow what a helluva weekend, Some (expletive) named Sie Menzies and about 10 of his friends started a fight with me. I guess just to test a ‘UFC fighter guy’ at his (expletive) little bar in Karon Thailand. According to police reports, the former TUF hopeful was seen beating up on a woman at the bar. He also allegedly attacked Thai female staff when they tried to stop him. Tourists who tried to contain Junie apparently also caught punches & kicks, but that’s only how the drama started. It continued in the hospital where Junie allegedly resumed fighting with the same people in the emergency ward of Patong Hospital in Phuket, Thailand.
I assure you, this is not the same story we posted 2 years ago of when Junie Browning was attacking nurses at the hospital, an incident which ultimately cost him his job with the UFC. He even apologized for it. This is an entirely new tale in the ‘chronicles of Junie Browning’. Currently, Junie is on the run from police in what has turned into a citywide manhunt in Phuket – a place tourists and Muay Thai fighters from around the world come to enjoy year-round. Not sure what the ramifications of this incident will be just yet, but we’ll keep you posted as details arise. [Source]
Remember when Brock Lesnar slammed the "Third World" health care system in Canada? He probably didn't know just how good he actually had it.
Especially when compared to the hospital for "everyday folks" in Russia, where stocky submission specialist Jeff Monson wound up after breaking his leg against Fedor Emelianenko back on Nov. 20 in Moscow.
From "The Snowman" (via MMA Connection):
"After the fight I had a choice of two hospitals. One for everyday folks and one for visitors and government officials. I picked the local everyday folk hospital as I was told it was closer to the arena. I’m obviously not a big fan of the medical industrial complex in the US as it is profit driven however, the experience at this hospital did make me appreciate the comfort of health care in this country. Upon arrival there were ER staff smoking in the lobby. The hallways were full of wandering patients that looked like they were just out of a civil war battle. I had to fight with one of the doctors to avoid having my skull x-rayed. Eventually I got an x-ray for my leg which showed it was broken (something I already knew) and had it casted. I got 16 stitches on the inside and outside of my lip with a material that could of passed for chicken wire. It was so sharp it was making my gums bleed so I took them out myself. Saying that, the doctors were very kind and despite the inadequate medical equipment/supplies they knew what they were doing."
Monson lost a unanimous decision in the main event of M-1 Global: "Battle of the Legends," which took place at the grand Olympic Arena in Moscow, Russia, earlier this month. The win snapped a three-fight losing streak for "The Last Emperor" and sent Monson to just his second defeat in ten fights.

“He’s underestimating me, just like all opponents, the same run of events, the same things get said in every fight. ‘Oh Bisping he’s not good at this, he’s not good at that’ and they have a different opinion by the time they’re checking out of the hospital after the fight. Six of my last seven opponents, that’s where they went to the hospital, and Jason Miller’s going to be no different. I hope he hasn’t booked an after party for after the fight cause if he does, he’s going to be spending it with a couple of nurses. I saw an interview he did recently where he said he’s going to knock me out and submit me in the first round. I’ve got to say I did laugh quite heartily when I read that. That’s what I said on the show when he said ‘I’m going to knock you out’, I said when have you knocked anyone out? When’s the last time I got submitted? Never. I’m looking forward to kicking his ass, can’t wait… I’m not underestimating Jason; I never do. He’s got some things I’ve got to be careful of, obviously the ground work, he’s going to want to take me down and submit me. I don’t think he’s going to be able to do that, but I’ve addressed that problem and I’ve trained very, very hard. But I’ll be honest the way I feel about it, I could have laid on my couch for six months eating pizza and got off my ass and kicked the (expletive) out of him. Unfortunately for him, I’ve just done a 10-week training camp as if I was facing Anderson Silva. This guy’s got nothing on me. I’m looking forward to proving it.”
— Michael Bisping on MMA Weekly Radio talking about his upcoming fight against Jason “Mayhem” Miller this weekend at the TUF 14 Finale
Strong words from Michael Bisping. I’m not sure he’ll put him in the hospital, but I think the smart money’s on Bisping in this TUF 14 coaches battle. Mayhem’s going to want to put Bisping on the ground where he can work his submission game, but Bisping’s usually pretty good at staying on his feet. If Bisping can keep it standing, he should be able to work from range and outpoint Mayhem like he’s done to many other opponents in the past. I don’t think Bisping will finish him, but he should be able to pick up a decision.

Michael Bisping believes that Jason "Mayhem" Miller is underestimating him ahead of their fight at the TUF 14 finale, so his reward will be spending his after party in the hospital.
