The name Jody Shelley is a common sight around these parts as the left wing is no stranger to his share of scraps on the ice. For this entry we’ll take a look back at some of Shelley’s early work in this brawl with the San Jose Sharks’ Scott Parker from 2004.
Once again we’re taking a look at the rivalry between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils, this time with Randy McKay and Jeff Beukeboom receiving the spotlight from this game in 1995.
The rivalry between the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers is one of the most documented in NHL history and for good reason. Take, for example, this brawl between the Devils’ Mike Peluso and Rangers’ Shane Churla from 1996 where it seems 50 punches are thrown in about 15 seconds of action.
And yes, someone ends up facedown on the ice.
Ah, 2000 – it was a simpler time where names like Justin Bieber and Jersey Shore meant very little outside of their respective circles. However, the action on the ice was just as evolved as it is more than a decade later as evident in this solid little scrap between the Phoenix Coyotes Landon Wilson and L.A. Kings’ Ian LaPerriere!
Occasionally a hockey fight will feature more than two players going at it on the ice with certain instances even seeing full squads duking it out. While today’s entry may not quite go that far, this 1995 meeting between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils does feature a nice tag-team tussle between Reid Simpson-Darren Langdon and Joey Kocur-Randy McKay.
In 2006 a respectable rumble between the Minnesota Wild’s Alex Henry and Colorado Avalanche’s Bob Boughner unfolded on the ice in a game between the teams. Possibly as entertaining as the series of blows exchanged is Henry’s eagerness to keep things going even after each man ends up belly-down.
Today’s fight might be half as long as those normally found on these pages but rest assured it contains twice the action! Watch as the New Jersey Devils’ Ken Daneyko and New York Rangers’ Kris King go at it in a game from 1990, reminding all exactly how little these two teams like each other and how long the rivalry has been going on.
Helmets? We don’t need no stinkin helmets! Well, at least the Phoenix Coyotes’ Gilbert Brule and Anaheim Ducks’ Corey Perry didn’t when it comes to this entertaining clash from earlier in the season.
There’s not a lot of set-up necessary for this clip because, let’s face it, the viewer gets thrown into the fire right off the bat! All you need to know is this fight from a game in 1985 between the New York Rangers’ Steve Richmond and New Jersey Devils’ Kirk Muller shows exactly how fierce the rivalry between the region-sharing teams truly is!
With fights dwindling given the decreasing number of games remaining in the season we’re going back in time once again to look at a great bout from seasons’ past.
When it comes to ex-Columbus Blue Jackets’ player Jody Shelley, the fact his first/last name have a feminine ring to them may not have anything to do with his toughness, but the tenacity with which he takes out the Minnesota Wild’s Jesse Boulerice in this clip seems to lend credit to the message behind the classic Johnny Cash tune Boy Named Sue.
We’re going back in time again today, stopping in 1979 to see how hockey players used to throw down on the ice in the era of bellbottoms and big hair. In the brawl the Washington Capitals Greg Polis pummels the New York Rangers Carol Vadnais though at times the scrap seems more like a tag-team bout than a one-v-one affair.
For today’s look back at some of the beautiful brawls of NHL-yesteryear the time machine is only set to 2006.
In this clip, the New York Rangers’ Colton Orr and Ottawa Senators’ Brian McGrattan mix it up. However, in the sequence, Orr is actually the aggressor while McGrattan doesn’t seem to want to drop his gloves at first. Apparently, based on the end result, his hesitance was not a matter of fear but rather concern for Orr’s health.
The New York Rangers and Washington Capitals have been dishing out damage to each other on the ice for years. While the rivalry is as intense today as it ever has been the actual on-ice action would be hard-pressed to match the melees players from the teams have had in the past. Case in point, this dandy between the Rangers’ George McPhee and Capitals’ Timo Blomqvist from 1984.
Once again we’re hopping in our tricked-out Delorean to take a journey back in time!
Today’s submission comes from 1981 and features the Washington Capitals’ Alan Hangsleben colliding with the New York Rangers’ Chris Kotsopoulos. The quality of the video may be a bit gritty but then again so is the scrap!
The playoff push continues this week as do the playoff punches. In today’s clip, the St. Louis Blues’ Chris Stewart shows the Los Angeles Kings’ Jordan Nolan that just because his team is done in the playoffs doesn’t mean they lose every exchange on the ice.
We’re back to classics today, this time going back more than 30 years to check out a clash involving the Washington Capitals’ Yvon Labre locked up with the New York Rangers’ Mario Marois. The quality of the video may not be HD but the action definitely holds up to anything fans see on their screens today.
As the number of games remaining in the 2011-2012 NHL season wind down the intensity has amped up as evident in a brawl last night between the Phoenix Coyotes’ Kyle Chipchura and Nashville Predators’ Paul Gaustad. While a solid scrap is nothing new for either man, the thing separating their fight from last night’s game from most unfolding on the ice happens to be the starting position featuring Chipchura on the ground.
After checking out a few more classics we’re back to checking out a recent rumble from the playoff series between the St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings. In this clip, the Blues’ Jamie Langenbrunner and Kings’ Mike Richards decide to give it a go after “fencing” with their hockey sticks for a few ticks.
If there’s one player who has been synonymous with delivering damage on the ice over the past decade it’s Donald Brashear, a veteran who never shies away from physical confrontation and has even tested his fighting skills as a Mixed Martial Artist.
In today’s clip Brashear shows off his passion for violence and ability to deliver on it when he faces off with the Florida Panthers’ Jamie Allison in a game from 2006.
With the number of hockey fights dwindling these days due to the reduced amount of games in the playoffs we’re once again taking a look back at some memorable fights from yesteryear.
In this clip, Cam Janssen and Eric Boulton go at it in a game from 2006 with Janssen dictating the pace early on despite only using one arm to do so!
The next round of the playoffs have started and with it come a batch of fresh, new fights. In today’s entry, the L.A. Kings’ appropriately named Dwight King and the St. Louis Blues’ B.J. Crombeen decide to drop gloves and exchange blows within a second of a face off. It may not be a bloody, brutal brawl but it sure is a fun one!
Continuing with classics, this entertaining showdown between the Chicago Blackhawks’ Matt Barnaby and Vancouver Canucks’ Wade Brookbank comes from 2006. While the bout is pretty much standard fare make sure you stick around for the end when even the referees can’t stop a punch or two from flying in despite being in the middle of the scrum.
Today we’re back again with another classic collision from 2006, this time featuring the New York Rangers’ Colton Orr battling the Ottawa Senators’ Brian McGrattan. There’s not much set-up involved, just one helluva scrap between the two!
We’ve got another classic clash today featuring two fairly popular players in the form of the Dallas Stars’ Brenden Morrow and Los Angeles Kings’ Sean Avery. While Avery may have a reputation for being the tougher of the two, Morrow apparently wasn’t aware of it or simply didn’t care as he’s clearly the aggressor at the start. How he finishes…well…watch the video and find out!
Staying with yesterday’s theme of classic clashes, today’s entry comes from 2006 and features fan-favorite Darcy Hordichuk (Nashville Predators) locking horns with the St. Louis Blues’ Barret Jackman.
With the number of fights decreasing in conjunction with the number of teams/games remaining in the 2012 season it’s time to take a look back at some memorable bouts from yesteryear. In fact, today’s clip features black-and-white footage from a match-up more than 45 years old! In it, the Chicago Blackhawks’ Doug Mohns goes at it with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Kent Douglas with one uber-tough referee getting in the way to try and settle things down.
Today’s entry isn’t a marathon or even a sprint. In fact, blink and you may miss it. However, for those attentive enough, watch what happens when one well-placed punch lands square in this bout between the St. Louis Blues’ Matt D’Agostini and Phoenix Coyotes’ Raffi Torres (who has since been suspended for 25 games after a cheap-shot to a Chicago Blackhawks player).
Perhaps the best brawl of this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs went down last night between the New York Rangers’ Brandon Prust and Ottawa Senators’ Chris Neil where the two not only went at each other for more than a solid minute but action unfolded all over the rink. Also, in a rarely seen gesture, Neil even takes a break from punching Prust to hype the crowd up before going back to throwing blows!
Hockey players are tough in general but there are a few souls who set themselves apart from the bunch by being downright nasty. One of those men is Shawn Thornton, a Boston Bruins’ “enforcer” who has dished out his fair share of beatdowns over the years. While not a bloodbath by any means, this recent throwdown between Thornton and the Buffalo Sabres’ Robyn Regehr is a good example of exactly why you don’t want any of the veteran’s punches connecting.
You may be familiar with hockey players dropping their gloves before a fight but have you ever seen one player rip another’s helmet off in hopes of delivering even more damage with the shots to come? If not, today’s clip is the one for you after the St. Louis Blues’ Chris Stewart gets a hold of the San Jose Sharks’ Tommy Wingels‘ gear and not-so-politely removes it for him.
Today’s entry is one of the more-unique offerings you’ll find here as things unfold in almost a domino-like pattern with a few minor scuffles evolving into a bigger brawl between the St. Louis Blues’ Kris Russell and San Jose Sharks’ Joe Pavelski.
Just because it’s playoff time doesn’t mean opposing teams are going to handle their adversaries with kiddie gloves. In fact, as evident from this clip, they prefer to use no gloves at all as seen when the Phoenix Coyotes’ Paul Bissonnette and Chicago Blackhawks’ Brandon Bollig decided to mix it up on the ice in last night’s game.
In hockey it’s rare to see a player back down from the challenge of another regardless of the individual or situation. The Stanley Cup playoffs are no exception to the rule as evident in a recent bout between the Detroit Red Wings’ Todd Bertuzzi and Nashville Predators Shea Weber.
There may be an official statistic out there showing otherwise but it seems there are as many hockey fights involving a player coming to a teammate’s defense as much as those where a player is simply sticking up for himself. In today’s example, the former was in play after a minor scrum featuring Pittsburgh Penguins’ star Sidney Crosby influenced Kris Letang to go after the Philadelphia Flyers’ Kimmo Timonen.
Playoff-pugilism seems to be at an all-time high this NHL season with numerous players going after each other on the ice including a few brawls involving multiple opposing players. Today’s example featuring the Vancouver Canucks’ Alexandre Burrows and Los Angeles Kings’ Anze Kopitar starts out in a similar vein before the two separate and start swinging at each other.
Today’s entry could have been labeled as being the Philadelphia Flyers vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins based on the number of players involved but ultimately the one true brawl in last night’s team-on-team tussle came from the Flyers’ Scott Hartnell and Peguins’ Craig Adams. The end of the match-up also sees Adams’ pull Hartnell’s hair, a rarely seen cheap-trick from Pittsburgh’s wing.
Just because the NHL is in the midst of the Stanley Cup playoffs doesn’t mean players are any less likely to express their displeasure physically in certain instances. One of those situations occurred yesterday at the end of the game between the St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks when multiple players from each squad decided to go at it at the expiration of the third period.
It’s playoff time and tensions are at an all-time high, at least where 2012 is concerned. As might be expected, the stakes left a number of players on edge including the Detroit Red Wings’ Todd Bertuzzi and Nashville Predators’ Shea Webber. Though the action was short-lived, the intensity of the bout was prevalent.
It’s rare we feature back-to-back fights from the same game let alone bouts with the same player but in the case of the San Jose Sharks’ Ryane Clowe we’re making an exception. Yesterday Clowe impressed with his brawl against the Los Angeles Kings’ Kyle Clifford. This time around Clowe clashes with Clifford’s teammate, Matt Greene.
The NHL teams in California may not have the same notorious rivalry as those on the East Coast or in Canada but rest assured there’s still a ton of regional pride on the line when they meet up as indicated when the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings met for a recent game. In the match there were a handful of fights, including this dandy between the Sharks’ Ryane Clowe and Kings’ Kyle Clifford.
Not every hockey fight involves 45-60 seconds of jersey-grabbing jabs. In fact, occasionally you run into a beatdown or two as was the case when the Philadelphia Flyers’ Harry Zolnierczyk got his helmet caved in by the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Joe Vitale.
Though this bout may feature the Los Angeles Kings’ Drew Doughty against the San Jose Sharks’ Joe Thornton but it might as well have been David vs. Goliath considering the size-difference between the two. However, as valiant an effort as the undersized Doughty makes, from the looks of it he may actually need a rock-filled sling to come away with a win the next time he crosses paths with Thornton.
You might not think of the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Islanders as being heated rivals but if a recent game between the two squads was any indicator the teams not only dislike each other but should have some bad blood for the foreseeable future. Today’s entry is just one of the multiple fights that broke out during the contest with this particular affair featuring Columbus’ Jared Boll mixing it up with the Islanders’ Micheal Haley.
There’s no doubt hitting an opponent on the ground is a “no no” in hockey. However, that didn’t stop the St. Louis Blues’ Barret Jackman from giving the Dallas Stars’ Ryan Garbutt a love tap despite being on his backside. Needless to say, Garbutt didn’t take kindly to the contact and as a result helped contribute to today’s submission.
To get the full scope on how frenzied this fight is, make sure to start out watching the bottom right-hand corner of the video to get the initial clash between the Buffalo Sabres’ Marcus Foligno and Toronto Maple Leafs’ Matt Frattin. Their brawl may not last long but it definitely possesses the same level of violence as bouts taking twice as much time to unfold.
Normally an epic clash on the ice involves a slobberknocker between two players going at it for a solid chunk of time. However, when the Edmonton Oilers’ Darcy Hordichuk and Anaheim Ducks’ George Parros get together on the ice it seems fans are guaranteed something magical whether it lasts two minutes or two seconds. Last night’s clash between the two was no different with each displaying some of the most vicious strikes you’re likely to see in any hockey fight.
Forget the daily distinction – we’ve got a “Hockey Fight of the Year” candidate in today’s offering!
Things always get heated when teams in the New York area get together and this week’s game between the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils was no different. In the clip, Michael Haley from the Islanders doesn’t take kindly to a hit dished out to one of his teammates by the Devils’ Cam Janssen and lets him know about it with a few well-placed punches.
With the NHL playoffs rapidly approaching things have been a little tenser than normal on the ice, though fans certainly aren’t complaining after some of the exchanges the final run towards the Stanley Cup has produced. A good example came in last night’s game when a solid scrap between the Boston Bruins’ Andrew Ference and Pittsburgh Penguins’ James Neal unfolded from the arena with little more than a shove inciting things.
There’s an unwritten rule in hockey when it comes to fighting on the ice stating that bouts end as soon as one man hits the ice. However, in today’s post Edmonton Oiler Ben Eager lives up to his last name by getting a little too friendly with his shots, even blasting opponent Jordan Nolan a few times after the L.A. Kings’ player goes down to his knees.
This feature normally involves one-on-one contests but in the case of yesterday’s game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins an exception had to be made. With the contest out of reach, one of the Penguins decided to lay a stiff open-ice check on a Flyer and needless to say the Philly players didn’t take kindly to the action. As a result, both teams ended up throwing down with coaches nearly getting involved as well.
You can count on there being fireworks anytime a team from Boston meets one from New York. Last night’s game between the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins was no different with a number of tense moments and instances on-ice action unrelated to the actual game being played. One such example came in this throwdown between the Islanders’ Michael Haley and Bruins’ Gregory Campbell.
Not every hockey fight needs to be an all-out war to be entertaining. For example, take this scuffle between the Anaheim Ducks’ George Parros and San Jose Sharks’ Brad Winchester. Though the fight lasts less than a minute plenty of punches are landed including one that puts one of the two players on his backside.
Though this fight may not last as long as fans may have wanted to see, the brawl between the Ottawa Senators’ Chris Neil and Montreal Canadiens’ Ryan White is certainly an entertaining one made even better by the fact a number of their teammates decide to go at it as well during the minute-long melee.
Today’s entry is nothing over-the-top but rather a good ol’ fashioned scrap featuring the Colorado Avalanche’s Mark Olver and Vancouver Canucks’ David Booth. Another highlight on the clip outside of the actual fight is a third player from the Canucks racing in to get a shot in on Olver only to get grabbed and pummeled himself before he gets a chance.
Folks in Canada have been playing hockey for a lot longer at a lot higher level than those in Florida. However, both regions have been fighting for a comparable amount of time as evident when the Floria Panthers’ Erik Gudbranson went toe to toe with Montreal Canadiens’ Ryan White with the rookie landing some of the stiffest shots you’re likely to have seen on the ice for some time.
This fight somehow slipped through the cracks earlier this week but, as they say, eventually the cream rises to the top.
In it, the Winnipeg Jets’ Jim Slater and Washington Capitols’ Brooks Laich decide to go at it full force with their initial clash resembling two rams charging forward and butting each other head-on. It may be fast but it’s also awfully furious too!
Today’s clip may not involve one of the knock-down, drag-out brawls you typically see in this feature but it does happen to feature one of the cleanest punches you’re likely to have seen in some time on the ice. The involved participants are none other than the Nashville Predators’ Jordin Tootoo and Chicago Blackhawks’ Brandon Bollig, two familiar faces inside the penalty box for their propensity to turn from players into pugilists.
In this clip not even the goal is safe from the ensuring scrum after the Buffalo Sabres’ Travis Turnbull and Minnesota Wild’s Nick Johnson decided to go at it in front of the net. The fight even carries over to other players who go at it as well.
One of the increasingly familiar faces around this feature is Brad Staubitz, the Montreal Canadiens’ 27-year old wing. This time around he’s decided to take on the Ottawa Senators’ Zenon Konopka, also no stranger to the penalty box, and as you might imagine their brawl was one worth checking out.
There’s never been any doubt regarding how tough hockey players are, but the Vancouver Canucks’ Dale Weise offered up a reminder of such being the case for fans needing a reminder. Weise threw down last night against the Dallas Stars’ Jake Dowell where he ate a number of hard shots but battled back multiple times to earn not only a “draw” but the respect of any onlookers too.
Not every fight has to last a full 60-90 seconds to count as an entertaining clash. Case in point, this little dandy between the Buffalo Sabres’ Cody McCormick and Montreal Canadiens’ Brad Staubitz. The two go at it for a short period of time before one gets the advantage and throws the other one down on the ice for good measure.
Since yesterday’s segment featured multiple players getting down on the ice it seems only natural today’s should feature the same as well given the rarity of multiple-man melees. This time the key players are the Phoenix Coyotes’ Shane Doan and Dallas Stars’ Brenden Morrow with action being brought on due to a cheap elbow-shot from the latter resulting in blood, brawling, and more!
Typically this daily feature mentions a player vs. player encounter but when it came to last night’s game between the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers the notion of individual battles went out the door from the opening bell when multiple fights broke out. Watch below as Ryan Carter-Stu Bickel, Cam Janssen-Brandon Prust, and Eric Boulton-Michael Rupp all show why hockey is a TEAM game.
Hockey is a cool sport to accidentally spill your beer over a person sitting next to you and immediately get kicked out of whatever place you were in. This is all from experience, which is the sole reason why I'm no longer a hockey fan. I don't need to get removed from any more places. Perhaps I need to, but I just don't want to. In fact, I don't want to get punched in the face and increase my probability of directly face planting on ice. I'm staying off ice for the rest of the day to ensure this. I won't even get a Slurpee.
I'm sure you're guilty of salivating in front of your television as a hockey fight went down on national television. Now just imagine three separate fights, all occurring at the same time in the same state that bans MMA. You can almost taste the irony in this one, yet check out the brawl between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils that occurred last night -- and props to Rangers for clinching a playoff spot with their win. [Source]
If there’s one word to describe today’s entry it’s “fun”, at least if you aren’t one of the two men involved in the clip. The Columbus Blue Jackets’ Jared Boll and Calgary Flames’ Guillaume Desbiens decided to get fans going over the weekend by engaging in a back-and-forth brawl with blood being drawn and clean shots being landed. While one man exits with a slim advantage they both get respect after the gutsy effort each turns in.
There are a handful of players opponents should be wary of crossing paths with on the ice when it comes to throwing down in a hockey game. One of those individuals is unquestionably the Philadelphia Flyers’ Zac Rinaldo who shows exactly why in this clash with Gregory Campbell from last night’s game against the Boston Bruins.
As the saying goes, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” Unfortunately for the Montreal Canadiens’ Brad Staubitz, hockey happens to be played on ice and he ran into an angry Chris Neil who didn’t take kindly to a hit Staubitz laid on one of his Ottawa Senators’ teammates.
Though the subjects of today’s clip may have names most folks would butcher when it comes to pronunciation, one thing much easier to understand is the effort turned in last night by the Calgary Flames Guillaume Desbiens and Phoenix Coyotes Paul Bissonnette when their teams met on the ice (or more specifically when the two of them faced off and spoke the universal language of fisticuffs).
Not every fight on the ice is a competitive clash. While there’s no question every individual in the NHL is tough, some are more hardened than others as you’ll see in this clip from last night’s game between the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens where Jared Cowan made a clear statement to future challengers by pummeling Petteri Nokelainen until the refs were forced to intervene.
Climate-wise the homes of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers couldn’t be much more different, but when it comes to the players’ willingness to lock horns and throw down on the ice the teams couldn’t be more similar. Such was put on display last night when the squads met and former teammates Carter Ashton and Shawn Matthias turned in this entertaining affair.
Whether you identify more with the sunny disposition of Los Angeles or Midwest sensibilities of Chicago, when it comes to hockey chances are you appreciate what both cities have accomplished on the ice. Not only historically good squads, the Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks continue to be two of the top franchises in the sport fueled by players like Kyle Clifford and Brandon Bollig who did their fans proud over the weekend by turning in this fine little fist-based dandy.
In hockey the terms “forgive” and “forget” are not typically found in players’ vocabulary, at least when it comes to past fights or hard hits. Evidence of that attitude surfaced over the weekend when the New York Islanders met with crosstown rivals the New York Rangers and players Micheal Haley-Stu Bickel picked right back up where they left on when the teams met in late December, going right after each other and fighting furiously until split up by the refs.
Today’s entry will feature one of the season’s better comebacks after the St. Louis Blues’ B.J. Crombeen battles back from being dropped to show the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Dane Byers why he’s one of the toughest draws on the ice.
It seems the bulk of hockey fights end with either the referee breaking things up or action hitting the ground where it’s then stopped. While the latter may apply to today’s selection, prior to the ending there is one of the cleanest strikes you’ll see on the ice with one of the two players being de-boned as a result. Will it be the Philadelphia Flyers’ Zac Rinaldo or Florida Panthers’ Erik Gudbranson? Watch and find out…
Tweet
As expected, more than a few brawls broke out this week when the New York Rangers faced the New Jersey Devils. One of the more memorable match-ups came between the Rangers’ Brandon Dubinsky and Devils’ Ryan Carter who threw caution to the wind (and their helmets) in this entertaining tilt.
In hockey it’s important to keep one’s head on a swivel. Not just during action on the ice, mind you, but in-between breaks in the game as well. This clip from a recent game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Phoenix Coyotes shows exactly why, as the Lightning’s Keith Aulie didn’t take too kindly to a hit from the Coyotes’ Colin Greening and made his distaste known with a sucker-shove to the face to kick off a decent little dance between the two.
Typically when a hockey player hails from a particular region there’s a homecoming of sorts involving a mutual respect between the individual and the area he grew up in. However, when the Chicago Blackhawks’ Brandon Bollig (who is from St. Louis) crossed paths with the St. Louis Blues he decided to show his town just how tough he is, picking a fight with Ryan Reaves and delivering an entertaining scrap from fans to enjoy regardless of where they’re from.
Anytime a Boston team meets up with a New York team, regardless of sport, the recipe for fireworks is in place. The two towns with a notorious amount of hate for one another have produced some of the greatest rivalries in history including of course the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins. Over the weekend those teams put the theory to the test and didn’t disappoint with the Rangers’ Michael Rupp and Bruins’ Lane MacDermid playing the roles of regional representatives.
Just because a player may be a rookie in the NHL doesn’t mean he’s unfamiliar with the prospect of throwing down against an opponent. Two of the league’s newest members proved that over the weekend when the Detroit Red Wings’ Brendan Smith and Chicago Blackhawks’ Andrew Shaw decided to go skate-to-skate and scrap it out to the raucous approval of fans.
Though this clip may lack Vin Diesel or any high-end Japanese cars it could still be subtitled Fast and Furious based on the pace and energy the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Mike Brown and Montreal Canadiens’ Brad Staubitz.
There’s certainly no love between the Calgary Flames’ Jarome Iginla and Anaheim Ducks’ Francois Beauchemin based on some previous encounters. Once again the two of them got into it on the ice when the teams met up last night and, as expected, fistic fireworks were soon on display.
Anytime the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins get together you can bet your bottom dollar there will be more than one brawl on the ice. Both teams, known for their history as well as tough-nosed players, are close enough regionally to make the Devils-Bruins one of the best rivalries in sports and last night’s game between the two teams did not disappoint. Also not surprising, two of the men who decided to tussle happen to be familiar faces around the penalty box – Shawn Thornton and Eric Boulton.
Though the header of this article may list two players, when it comes to this fight from last night’s game between the Buffalo Sabres and Anaheim Ducks it was only a single component of what could be called a “team effort” as multiple players started mixing it up on the ice at the same time. Watch how the melee unfolds with Tyler Myers and Sheldon Brookbank at the center of it…
Tweet
It’s not easy being a 22-year old NHL rookie in a sport filled with seasoned veterans but the Los Angeles Kings’ Jordan Nolan seems to be adjusting just fine since recently getting called up. Not only has he already found the back of the net but, if this match-up with fellow youngster Marco Scandella is any indicator, Nolan is quite the scrapper as well.
Hockey fans are undoubtedly familiar with the abilities of Eric Boulton and Brandon Prust, two talented players in the NHL who have skills on the ice as well as a passion for pugilism. As might be expected two two went at it when their respective teams met last night with the clear-cut winner being none other than the average fan tuning in to watch them tussle.
When a game gets out of hand it isn’t uncommon for the losing squad to pick a fight with the team in front as a means of venting frustration or attempting to at least score some sort of success on the ice. Unfortunately that strategy backfired on the Detroit Red Wings’ Justin Abdelkader who went after the Colorado Avalanche’s Ryan Wilson when he found his team down by three goals in the third period. Needless to say, the Avalanche won more than just the game that night…
Tweet
When the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers get together on the ice there’s no question at least a few entertaining brawls are bound to break out given the regional proximity of the teams to one another. As such, last night’s game did not disappoint, thanks in part to this nice little ditty between Paul Gaustad and Brandon Prust where each man literally punches himself out based on the length/ferocity of their exchange.
Though it may not have been a knockdown, drag-out brawl, a recent scrap between the San Jose Sharks’ Jim Vandermeer and Toronto Maple Leafs’ Mike Brown hit on all cylinders where turning in an entertaining brawl is concerned. It also features a veteran move from Vandermeer who shucks his sweater off an arm to free it up for doing even more damage.
Typically it takes a solid chunk of time for a hockey fight to be considered one of the season’s best but in the case of the Philadelphia Flyers’ Jody Shelley and Edmonton Oilers’ Darcy Hordichuk it’s worth making an exception. The two players faced off last night and packed as much action into a 30-45 second period as could be imagined.
One of the more-familiar faces around these parts, the Boston Bruins’ Adam McQuaid is known for not backing down from a challenge as is the St. Louis Blues’ BJ Crombeen. Fortunately for fans their teams met last night on the ice and, as expected, Crombeen-McQuaid butted heads in the game leading to this fantastic fight between two of the NHL’s toughest draws.
The New Jersey Devils’ David Clarkson is the type of teammate every hockey player loves to have based on his willingness to stand up to opponents when necessary even if over-matched. Clarkson’s latest example of machismo came last night when the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Dion Phaneuf roughed up one of his fellow Devils. Clarkson wasted no time going down ice to instigate a fight with Phaneuf and, as you might have already guessed, he gets his wish.
One of the remarkable things about high-level hockey is the ability of players to remain graceful despite the constant movement brought on by the playing surface’s lack of friction. Such a skill is not only useful when it comes to playing offense or defense but also during fights as displayed by the Anaheim Ducks’ George Parros and Florida Panthers’ Krys Barch who keep throwing hands/elbows despite being stuck it what seems like an endless spin likely to even make a few viewers dizzy.
Today’s entry should serve as a word of warning to all hockey players to make sure they don’t bite off more than they can chew. In this short, but entertaining, fight between the Chicago Blackhawks’ John Scott and Columbus Blue Jackets’ Derek Dorsett. In it Dorsett decides he wants a piece of Scott, going over to challenge him and even throwing a few punches. Unfortunately for him the tide quickly turns as soon as Scott decides to engage him back…

Today’s entry may not be the most technical or lengthy of fights but it’s definitely one of the bloodier affairs you’re likely to see go down on the ice. The scrap occurred last night between the New Jersey Devils’ Eric Boulton and Anaheim Ducks’ George Parros where evidence is offered of how much more dangerous a helmet can be than a fist…
Tweet
It’s often said an individual player still represents his entire team. Last night the Winnipeg Jets’ Tanner Glass put that concept on display after the squad’s entire line nearly got into it against the Minnesota Wild’s group. While the referees calmed things down in the beginning, apparently that wasn’t enough for Glass who sought out Darroll Powe and put on this fun little fight…
Tweet
Typically hockey fights are broken up when one (or both) players hit the ice. However, in this little dandy from the Montreal Canadiens’ Ryan White and Boston Bruins’ Adam McQuaid, things get to a point where referees feel the need to split them up while still standing.
It may have been Valentine’s Day yesterday but that doesn’t mean the dynamic athletes of the NHL decided to trade in their fists and dish out flowers instead. Case in point, this little dandy between the Anaheim Ducks’ George Parros and Minnesota Wild’s Matt Kassian.
With it being Valentine’s Day we thought we’d show a little love to the hate between the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames by plucking another fight from their recent game. In this go-round the Flames’ Tim Jackman and Canucks’ Andrew Alberts represent their provinces with pride, locking horns and going at it for a solid chunk of time.
As even a non-fan might assume, some of the fiercest rivalries in hockey involve Canadian teams based on both national pride and the sport’s history in the region. Over the weekend the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks got together, showing exactly how Canadian teams feel about each other by getting in multiple fights with haymakers being thrown left and right. Here’s one between the Flames’ Lance Bouma and Canucks’ Mike Duco.
When the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers meet on the ice it essentially guarantees at least a few fights will take place during the game given the teams proximity and hard-nosed reputation. Last night’s match-up was no different with a handful of brawls including this beauty from Brandon Dubinsky and Zac Rinaldo…
Tweet
The Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks have never been known as having any sort of real rivalry given where each is located on the map but that doesn’t mean the two teams don’t fight like it when they DO get together. Last night’s game between the two teams featured a number of nice exchanges between players, one of which involved the Sharks’ Jamie McGinn and Blackhawks’ Bryan Bickell.
In what may be the best match-up of names thus far in our Hockey Fight of the Day series, this entry features a nice bout between the Minnesota Wild’s Cal Clutterbuck and Vancouver Canucks’ Maxim Lapierre where Clutterbuck apparently bites off a little more than he can chew in facing the veteran scrapper.
If you were ever wondering exactly how tough hockey players are you’ll want to make sure you watch today’s entry, as the San Jose Sharks’ Andrew Desjardins duked it for a good block of time with the Calgary Flames’ Cory Sarich when the two teams met last night. While that in itself may seem standard, Desjardins never wavered from his attempt to land strikes despite Sarich wearing a visor on his helmet that blocked a good portion of them.
Typically when both participants in a hockey fight hit the ice the action ends and the referees split the pair of pugilists up. However, when it came to a bout last night between the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Derek Dorsett and Minnesota Wild’s Nate Prosser, not only did the two keep going at it while down but then got back up to continue things before a big slam ends their combined efforts.
If you’re a fan of hockey fights you no doubt know Tom Sestito, the Philadelphia Flyers’ enforcer who seems to spend nearly as much time in the penalty box as he does on the ice. If you needed any evidence of this, just look at the game on Sunday between the Flyers and the New York Rangers where Sestito found himself in THREE brawls! Here’s the latter one involving Brandon Prust where you might even catch a little hair-pulling if you look closely…
Tweet
The two players featured in today’s entry may not be familiar faces around these parts but, at least based on the way they went at it over the weekend, the St. Louis Blues’ Ryan Reaves and Nashville Predators’ Brian McGrattan should change that in 2012 after a terrific tilt. The only clear winner emerging from the clash is you, the fan.
This is an early entry for “Hockey Fight of the Year” after an incident between two men results in multiple melees including one between the Philadelphia Flyers’ Brayden Schenn and New Jersey Devils’ Ilya Kovalchuk where the latter rag-dolls Schenn a few times before putting him away with a stiff right.
Today’s entry features a battle between a pair of similarly named, similarly scrappy players with the Florida Panthers’ Krys Barch and Winnipeg Jets’ Chris Thorburn deciding to mix it up last night on the ice. Thorburn is a familiar face around these parts based on some of his past brawls but he may have met his match in Barch…
Tweet
With the hockey season back in full swing so are the sport’s scraps. Today’s entry comes from a bout between the Philadelphia Flyers’ Tom Sesito and Winnipeg Jets’ Chris Thorburn start out strong with each landing a number of clean blows to the other and one ends up with his arm trapped inside his jersey with the entire thing resulting in an evenly matched, entertaining affair!
The HP Pavilion, a.k.a. The Shark Tank, has hosted plenty of fights before as the arena is not only known as a home-base for the NHL’s San Jose Sharks but also the Strikeforce MMA organization. In honor of the venue, last night’s game between the Sharks and Columbus Blue Jackets resulted in a number of entertaining brawls including two between Jared Boll and Jim Vandermeer. Check out round one of their double-header!
The NHL fired back up last night after a brief break for All-Star Weekend. Fortunately it appears none of the league’s players forgot how to fight as indicated by this lovely little scrap between the Boston Bruins’ Adam McQuaid and Ottawa Senators’ Zenon Konopka!
As the NHL is still on break for All-Star Weekend reasons we continue our tour around the minors, this time stopping for a nice little bout between the Kelowna Rockets’ Carter Rigby and Seattle Thunderbirds’ Dave Sutter who show that they’re both ready for the big time – at least when it comes to mid-game fighting.
Just because the NHLers are taking a minor break during the All-Star Weekend festivities doesn’t mean hockey isn’t being played somewhere in North America and, as such, at least two players threw down on the ice. Today’s example comes from the minors despite some major action, as the San Antonio Rampage’s Michal Repik and Houston Aeros’ Casey Wellman went toe-to-toe after Repik laid a brutal check into the glass on one of Wellman’s teammates.
Phoenix and Ottawa couldn’t be much more different in terms of landscape or history where hockey is concerned but that doesn’t mean the Phoenix Coyotes are anything close to suiting up a bunch of players opposing teams can push around. Were there any doubt, the Coyotes’ Kyle Chipchura sunk his teeth into the Ottawa Senators’ Zack Smith during a game last week and instead of twirling around in a circle while picking out big shots the two locked up in a clinch and went from there.
Yesterday we looked as the Winnipeg Jets’ Chris Thornburn put a beating on the New York Rangers’ Michael Rupp. While there was no question Thornburn got the best of Rupp in the exchange, the 32-year old Rupp came looking for revenge later in the game and got into it a second time with Thornburn. Did he even the score or flounder just as badly as before? Watch and find out…
Tweet
The Winnipeg Jets’ Chris Thornburn was out to send a message last night when his team met the New York Rangers on the ice, getting into a pair of brawls with 6’5″ Michael Rupp including today’s entry where he delivers a one-sided beatdown despite Rupp’s best efforts to defend.
It appears the Nashville Predators’ Brandon Yip must have been in attendance last Friday night when the UFC rolled into town and felt inspired by what he saw, at least based on this brawl between Yip and the Chicago Blackhawks’ Steve Montador during last night’s game. Both men go at it furiously, working for a takedown from the clinch until Yip takes it a step further and implements a little judo action to secure the victory.
This battle between the St. Louis Blues’ Chris Stewart and the Detroit Red Wings’ Brad Stuart isn’t just notable because two men with similar variations of the same last name happen to go at it but rather because of the aftermath. While fights on the ice tend to calm down once one man goes down in the case of Stewart vs. Stuart more than one punch gets thrown and landed to the fallen player.
The Philadelphia Flyers are fast-becoming one of the most popular teams around these parts based on what seems to be a continuous stream of games involving some on-ice enforcement. This time around the Flyers’ Tom Sestito locks horns with the Boston Bruins’ Milan Lucic. However, bear in mind that just because your team fights a lot does not mean you win them all. Practice makes perfect, eh?
Two of the hardest-nosed teams in the NHL have always been the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils, each squad consistently representing their traditionally tough regions with pride. Last night the Flyers’ Jody Shelley and Devils’ Eric Boulton undoubtedly made their fans proud when they went at it last night in one of the more entertaining match-ups from the past few weeks. Lefts are thrown, rights are exchanged, and ultimately a high dose of entertainment is to be had!
Not all hockey fights end with a knockdown or involve a bunch of bad blood. In fact, sometimes they can be downright civil as evident when Pierre-Cedric Labrie locked horns with Eric Nystrom at last night’s game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars. The two started out fast and furious but before long they appeared to start smiling and whispering sweet nothings to one another. Seriously!
Two of the most decorated, yet notoriously toughest, teams in the NHL are unquestionably the Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils. Both squads hooked up last night on the ice and, as might be expected, a handful of brawls broke out. One in particular that stood out came courtesy of the Devils’ Brad Mills and Bruins’ Greg Campbell where not only their punching skills on display but also some fantastic balance.
There weren’t many hockey games yesterday but there was at least one quality brawl featuring the Montreal Canadiens Rene Borque and Washington Capitals Matt Hendricks where the two not only went toe-to-toe for a solid block of time but one (no spoilers here!) actually executes a textbook hip-toss technique straight out of a judo handbook. Who says every hockey fight has to be rock ‘em, sock em’ robots?

Who says every hockey fight has to be rock ‘em, sock em’ robots?

As today’s clip demonstrates a fight in hockey doesn’t always have to last for more than a minute to be highly entertaining. In fact, when the Ottawa Senators’ Nick Foligno and Toronto Maple Leafs’ Dion Phaneuf mix it up, they likely cover more ground while exchanging crisp crosses and jaw-jarring jabs than some players do in an entire game!
As even a non-fan might guess, occasionally hockey players take exception to being checked by an opposing player. Such was certainly the case in this battle last night between the St. Louis Blues’ Scott Nichol and Dallas Stars’ Jake Dowell, as Nichol was none too pleased with Dowell after hitting him with what he thought was a cheap shot.
Yesterday we looked at a one-sided affair on the ice while today’s entry is a far more even brawl between the New York Rangers Stu Bickel and Montreal Canadiens Travis Moen. Better yet, not only do the men scrap but do so as soon as the puck is dropped!
There’s something commendable about a teammate coming over to stick up for a fallen friend after an opposing player levels him on the ice. However, typically the individual who comes to the rescue should know how to fight if opting to go that route. Case in point, this brawl from last night’s game between the Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues featuring Brad Staubitz and Ryan Reaves.
Typically when two men lock horns on the ice the one who absorbs the most damage ends up going down before the other. However, in the case of the Florida Panthers’ Krys Barch and Pittsburgh Penguins’ Arron Asham it turns out the player who dishes out the night’s biggest shot finds himself face-down on the ice rather than the man who ate the strike.
Though the match-up may sound straight out of a WWE ring with names like Maxim LaPierre and Roman Polak involved, but this scrap last night between both NHL players in the Vancouver Canucks vs. St. Louis Blues game serves as evidence of a rarity in hockey – a fight where one man doesn’t even appear to land a single shot before absorbing multiple blows on his own. Not only that, one of the two is smart enough to push his opponent up against the wall to neutralize his attack. It’s short and sweet but worth watching all the same…
Tweet
Like most competitive sports, friendships past and present typically get put aside in hockey when two individual players face off on opposite teams. Such was recently the case when former teammates Shawn Thornton and Mark Stuart met on the ice in a recent game between the Boston Bruins and Winnipeg Jets where they not only played against each other but brawled!
Casual fans may feel hockey players are down to fight no matter what. However, as it turns out, many can be selective in their scraps as evident in a bout between the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Jared Boll and Chicago Blackhawks’ Steve Montador. Boll’s name is no stranger around these parts and, as appears to be the case in this particular pairing, Montador will probably think twice before confronting him again down the road.
Contrary to popular belief not all hockey fights start as an immediate response to action on the ice. In fact, in many cases the two participants will discuss the likelihood of throwing down before the game even starts. Case in point, the Philadelphia Flyers’ Zac Rinaldo and Ottawa Senators’ Zenon Konopka are caught talking to each other in a civilized manner before the game starts, then throw down right away after things actually begin.
When it comes to fighting on the ice it seems Columbus may want to re-name their franchise the “Black and Blue Jackets” after the pure beatdown Jared Boll put on the Anaheim Ducks’ Sheldon Brookbank last night. The fight may only go for 5-10 seconds, but lots of damage is dished out and though it ain’t pretty it sure is entertaining!
Typically a hockey fight involves one man versus another. However, occasionally things will escalate into multiple brawls at the same time. Case in point, last night’s brouhaha between the Vancouver Canucks’ Dale Weise and Boston Bruins’ Nathan Horton where one punch spilled over into a mini riot on the ice…
Tweet
Not all hockey fights are purely punching. In fact, fans who tune in to enough will occasionally come across a bit of grappling mixed in as well. Such was the case recently when the Nashville Predators’ Jordin Tootoo (one of the best names in hockey by the way) locked horns with the Dallas Stars’ Mark Fistric. Without giving anything away let’s just say one of the two men ends up on the wrong side of a body slam to the ice…
Tweet
It’s time to start your weekend off right with a quick clash between the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Adam Hall and Ottawa Senators’ Matt Carkner where one of the two gets dropped and turtles up rather than attempting to get back to his feet to keep things going. Turns out not every hockey fight is a solid minute of players getting blasted in the face without any actual damage done. Take notes, boxing!
The Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils have earned reputations for not only being championship-winning squads but also two of the toughest teams in the NHL. While yesterday’s video may have shown a one-sided beatdown, today’s is a far more competitive clash featuring the Bruins’ Shawn Thornton and Devils’ Cam Janssen where it’s hard to say who wins other than of course the fans who got to sit back and watch them go at it…
Tweet
Not every hockey fight is a back-and-forth fracas resulting in a borderline draw. Case in point, last night’s brawl between the Toronto Maple Leaf’s Luke Schenn and Tampa Bay Lightning’s’ Nate Thompson where Thompson ate about ten shots before even getting an opportunity to fire one back. In fact, Schenn was in such control he actually removed Thompson’s helmet mid-fight to make his shots extra effective.
Today’s entry featuring the New Jersey Devils’ Eric Boulton vs. the Ottawa Senators’ Chris Neil is akin to a first date, as things start off slowly and even a bit awkwardly but before you know it the action is hot-and-heavy towards the end. Ultimately things unfold into an extremely close match-up with no clear-cut winner other than the fans, without question the best type of hockey fight out there.
Every hockey player loves to have a teammate like the New York Rangers’ Michael Rupp. If you’re wondering why, all you need to do is check out today’s clip as Rupp goes after the Florida Panthers’ Tomas Kopecky who sucker-punches one of Rupp’s teammates. Needless to say revenge is dished out quite adequately…
Tweet
Not every hockey fight is a minute-plus brawl with a minimal number of clean shots landed before the two participants wrestle to the ground, giving the officials an opportunity to step in and separate things. However, in today’s submission, the Detroit Red Wings’ Mike Commodore and St. Louis Blues’ B.J. Crombreen don’t throw down for long before one of the two eats a stiff shot and gets dropped to the ice cleanly…
Tweet
Yesterday we offered up the Minnesota Wild’s Matt Kassian clashing with the Edmonton Oilers’ Darcy Hordichuk. While Kassian came out ahead in that brawl, Hordichuk apparently hadn’t had enough and went looking for trouble again later in the game. Needless to say it did NOT go how he planned…
Tweet
St. Paul can be an awfully cold place come late December. Fortunately, hockey fans in the area were able to warm themselves by the heat between the Minnesota Wild’s Matt Kassian and Edmonton Oilers’ Darcy Hordichuk who decided to square off twice in last night’s game between the two teams. As you’ll see from one of their exchanges no rubber-match will be required…
Tweet
Boston and Phoenix are two vastly different cities in terms of culture and climate. And, after watching this battle between the Boston Bruins’ Adam McQuaid and Phoenix Coyotes’ Raffi Torres, it’s not hard to tell which of the two towns embraces the concept of fighting as McQuaid puts an absolute beatdown on Torres leaving the Bruins’ fans howling rather than any Coyotes in the building.
Plenty of hockey fights end in a draw or without a definitive winner. Today’s entry is NOT one of those, as the Philadelphia Flyers’ Wayne Simmonds not only drops the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Eric Brewer with a sweet hook-uppercut combo but even opens up a pretty decent gash on his face as a result. The Flyers may have been down 3-1 in the game but Simmonds definitely walked away with a 10-9 round…
Tweet
The holidays are about the spirit of giving, an attitude taken to heart last night by the St. Louis Blues’ Barret Jackman and Dallas Stars’ Steve Ott who decided to exchange punches after Jackman was kind enough to hand-wrap a face-washing. For those who aren’t familiar with the terminology, as you’ll see on today’s video, Jackman scoops up a handful of ice from the rink and blasts a downed Ott in the mug with it…
Tweet
Some hockey fights occur in the spur of the moment while others are the product of built-up animosity between the players. Today’s entry is of the latter variety, as the Calgary Flames’ Tom Kostopoulos and Vancouver Canucks’ Kevin Bieska carry on their feud from last season and waste little time locking horns after a face-off, essentially shedding their gloves before the puck hits the ice.
In every hockey fight there is a winner whether it be winner or fan. In this case it’s the latter, as the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Arron Asham and Winnipeg Jets’ Tanner Glass throw down with neither getting the edge but both turning in an extremely entertaining affair.
Some hockey fights are technical, others are straight-up brawls. And then sometimes, as in the case with the New York Rangers’ Brandon Prust and Philadelphia Flyers’ Marc-Andre Bourdon, it’s plain magical. While the actual fisticuffs is entertaining, watch as these two lock hold of each other and spin around the ice in tandem like a violence-ridden Disney on Ice performance…
Tweet
New York-New York! No, it’s not the line from Frank Sinatra‘s famous tune or a geographical reference but rather the match-up mixing it up last night on the ice as the New York Rangers faced the New York Islanders. As even a non-hockey fan might guess the bad blood between two teams in such close proximity boiled over and resulted in this nice little scrap between Matt Martin and Stu Bickell…
Tweet
Start spreading the news, a hockey fight is coming today. And who is a part of it? New York, New Jersey…
There has never been any love lost between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils given the teams’ close proximity to one another and shared success on the ice. In this fight between Brandon Dubinsky and David Clarkson, watch as a referee tries to intervene like a zebra trying to break up a fight between two lions and, as you may have guessed, fail miserably.
When a guy who is 6’8″ comes looking for a fight the odds are likely stacked against whomever he’s after. Such was true in last night’s game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins when Deryk Engelland, no slouch himself at 6’2″, had John Scott after him based on a stiff check one of his teammates had just taken. You don’t pull on Superman’s cape, you don’t spit into the wind, you don’t pull the mask off the ol’ Lone Ranger, and you don’t mess with Scott and his friends…
Tweet
It’s not uncommon to see blood in a hockey game with the occasional crimson mask being worn by a player who accidentally catches a puck or stick to the face. However, when it came to last night’s rumble between the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Jay Rosehill and the L.A. Kings’ Kyle Clifford it was their exchange of blows that got the red flowing…
Tweet
Most hockey fights end as soon as action hits the ice. However, in this battle between the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Dane Byers and St. Louis Blues’ Roman Polak (which also features a chain-link fence of opposing players and referees headlocking each other) the scrum continues on the ground with Byers even employing a little ground-and-pound before a ref tackles him to separate the players…
Tweet
Boston and Philadelphia are two towns more-than familiar with fighting whether action takes place in boxing ring, street corner, or (as the case may be here) a hockey rink. As such, last night’s game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins had more than it’s share of smackdowns. Here’s one of them featuring the Flyers’ Zac Rinaldo roughing up the Bruins’ Nathan Horton…
Tweet
Last night marked the “Battle of the Birds” as the Anaheim Ducks met the Chicago Blackhawks in what turned out to be a lopsided game in the latter’s favor. Along similar lines, the Blackhawks’ John Scott put a convincing smackdown on the Ducks’ Sheldon Brookbank during the contest who, like his team, had little offense to offer in return.
Most hockey fights are nearly over before they’ve begun, lasting long enough for one or two punches to be landed before referees step in to split the two off. However, when it came to the Colorado Avalanche’s Daniel Winnik throwing down with the San Jose Sharks’ Ryane Clowe, the two men mixed it up for more than a minute leaving a few bruises and a torn-up jersey in their wake…
Tweet
Some hockey fights take place as a split-second reaction to an opposing player’s behavior, some simmer throughout a game before boiling over in a brawl. Today’s submission featuring the Minnesota Wild’s Brad Staubitz scrapping with the Chicago Blackhawks’ Daniel Carcillo is one of the latter. After jawing at each other early in the game the two decided it was time to settle the score with fists…
Tweet
Usually hockey fights involved two men with one hand firmly on the others’ jersey in order to maintain balance while the other hand is tightly clinched into a ball, then aimed at the opposing player’s face. However, when it came to a recent brawl between the Boston Bruins’ Shawn Thornton and Columbus Blue Jackets’ Jared Boll, the result was a bit more technical with each man circling the other at the start and picking shots rather than taking the typical route…
Tweet
Sometimes a hockey fight will seemingly spring up out of nowhere, leaving viewers wondering what may have fueled the two players to drop their sticks and raise their fists. However, in the case of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Steve Downie and New Jersey Devils’ Alexander Urbom the source of their conflict is clear in the moments prior to their pugilistic endeavors…
Tweet
Occasionally hockey teams will go out and sign an “enforcer” to add a bit of toughness to their squad. Such was the case with the Florida Panthers’ Krys Barch who was brought over to bring the sort of physicality exhibited in a scrap last night against the New York Rangers’ Brandon Prust. Based on the result, Florida definitely did their due diligence in finding someone more than happy to be be part of some fisticuffs…
Tweet
Anaheim may be known for Disneyland and Nashville may be known for country music but both cities, as different as they may be in layout and lifestyle, also play some damn fine hockey too. Were there any doubt, two of the respective clubs’ players, the Anaheim Ducks’ George Parros and Nashville Predators’ Brian McGrattan, threw down in last night’s game to show exactly how well each team represents the NHL and sport of hockey in general…
Tweet
Hockey fights may occasionally end as a the result of the damage being landed but far more typically action ceases as soon as one of the two involved individuals hits the ice. However, in the case of a recent clash between the Carolina Hurricanes’ Tim Gleason and the Winnipeg Jets’ Chris Thornburn even being dropped wasn’t enough to stop the furious fisticuffs between the two…
Tweet
Like most sports, the NHL has a number of interstate rivalries, and few are fiercer than that between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers. Were there any doubt about the intensity involved, all someone needs to do is check out this fight from last night’s game featuring the Penguins’ Tyler Kennedy clashing with the Flyers’ Harry Zolnierczyk where gloves are throw and a Judo-esque takedown is employed…
Tweet
Buffalo and Philadelphia are two of the toughest cities in the Northeastern United States and apparently the attitude carries over to players on each area’s NHL team as exhibited by the Philadelphia Flyers’ Zac Rinaldo and Buffa Sabres’ Corey Tropp in a scrap from last night’s game between the two. It’s fast, it’s furious, and it doesn’t even have any bad acting to water the action down with…
Tweet
People are used to duking it out over policy on Capitol Hill when it comes to policy but Washington, D.C. hosts frequent fisticuffs of a more literal kind as well as demonstrated by the Washington Capitols’ Bracken Kearns who squares off against the Florida Panthers’ John Erskine in a brawl from this week’s NHL action…
Tweet
MMA may be outlawed in New York but it’s a different story when you strap on a pair of ice skates, throw on some pads, and remove technique from the equation. That point was put on display by the New York Rangers’ Brandon Prust against the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Jay Rosehill in last night’s game between the two. Of course, considering one of the two decides to shed his gear before throwing down, there’s little question as to whose city welcomes all types of fighting with open arms…

Today we’ll be paying homage to one of the sport’s true hotbeds – Canada. In this clip Maxim LaPierre of the Vancouver Canucks and Matt Stajan of the Calgary Flames take their frustrations out on each other as only hockey players can. Enjoy!

This clip shows folks in the Garden State do more than pump fists in the club as the New Jersey Devils’ Tim Sestito throws down against the Winnipeg Jets’ Jason Jaffray like he’s Ronnie from Jersey Shore taking on a trash-talking bar patron.
Check it out as two familiar foes – the Edmonton Oilers’ Darcy Hordichuk and Columbus Blue Jackets’ Jared Boll – get into it at last night’s game between the teams. These two have faced off numerous times before both on the ice as opposing players as well as locked in each others’ grasp while pummeling one another.

There are hockey fights and then there are HOCKEY FIGHTS!!! This is one of the latter, as it not only involves multiple participants (including player-turned-Mixed-Martial Artist Donald Brashear) but is scored to Metallica’s Enter Sandman, adding yet another layer of epic-ness to the clip.
It’s got blood, a referee trapped in the middle of a scrum, and a ton of other subtleties so enjoy!
