During a pre-UFC 161 media scrum, UFC president Dana White had some big news. First he stated that Jon Jones will be defending his UFC light heavyweight title against Alexander Gustafsson in the main event of UFC 165 in Toronto. Then he stated that the heavyweight title will be up for grabs in October in Houston. Joe Ferraro tweeted what White had to say:
Dana stated Cowboy stadium is not in the plans for October. Cain vs Jds in October in Houston arena.
— Joe Ferraro (@ShowdownJoe) June 13, 2013
It was clarified that the fight would probably be taking place in an arena. Velasquez (12-1) and Dos Santos (16-2) have traded the title back and forth in their previous two meetings. JDS earned another shot by defeating Mark Hunt in the co-main event of UFC 160, while Velasquez successfully defended by stopping Antonio Silva in the main event of the same card.
No date or venue for the bout is set as of right now, though I'd assume we'll hear something soon.

Dana White confirms the next fight for the heavyweight title, and not too surprising it’ll be the third fight between Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez. This will be the third time these guys have fought since November of 2011.
UFC 160: Velasquez Vs Silva II is in the books, and it was UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez who defended his title against Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva. Silva was doing very good at defending the takedowns of Velasquez, when Velasquez landed an uppercut that crumpled Silva to the floor. Velasquez scrambled to his back, and pounded him out from back mount in under two minutes of the very first round.
Silva immediately began complaining the fight was stopped too early, and even brought it up multiple times at the post fight press conference. However, even UFC President Dana White said that he had seen worse stoppages, but agreed with Silva that the referees should be punished when they make big mistakes in fights. White didn’t object to the stoppage himself and said the ref was just looking out for Bigfoot.
Velasquez’s win sets up a trilogy fight former UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos. White said at the post fight press conference that the bout will happen before December if everyone stays healthy.

UFC heavyweight contender Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva has the opportunity for redemption in the rematch with Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight title at UFC 160 on May 25, and feels he's one punch away from victory.
All signs pointed to a showdown between Alistair Overeem and Cain Valesquez for the heavyweight title, but Antonio Silva changed that with a flurry of power punches right to Oveereem’s head. That leaves us wondering who will fight the newly re-crowned heavyweight champ next. Velasquez doesn’t say who he wants to fight, but he does [...]

Reports have it that the UFC is looking to make a return to Anaheim, California for their February 23 event. The card is likely to serve as UFC 157 and is currently targeting the Honda Center as a venue.
The promotion has taken Anaheim six times hitherto, with the last offering being UFC on Fox 1 last November, where Junior Dos Santos rested the heavyweight title from Cain Velasquez.
UFC 157 would be the second UFC pay per-view of 2013 after the Super Bowl weekend show, which takes place on February 2.

LAS VEGAS - At 25 years old, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is already among the greatest fighters to have competed for the world's largest MMA promotion.
He's beaten five former UFC champions in the past 20 months, and recently signed a deal to become the global MMA face for Nike.
But Jones believes those accomplishments are the beginning. Plenty of records are left to be broken, and there also may be another belt in his future: the UFC heavyweight title.
UFC featherweights Leonard Garcia and Cody McKenzie are both the type of fighters who care as much about entertaining fans as they do earning a win inside the Octagon. As such, perhaps it’s fitting the two talented competitors have been pegged to face off on December 29 at UFC 155 in a classic clash between striker/submission specialist.
UFC officials recently confirmed the match-up had been added to a lineup featuring Junior dos Santos defending his heavyweight title against Cain Velasquez in the headlining slot.
The 15-9-1 Garcia has been in a few “Fight of the Year” candidates throughout his career including those against Roger Huerta, Nam Phan, and Chan Sung Jung. Comparably, McKenzie holds an overall record of 13-3 with twelve wins by way of submission.

MMA Mania reports that Dana White estimates UFC 148 on July 7th to hit “UFC 100” levels including 1 million PPV buys. It appears that The Spider is doing his part with some uncharacteristic strong trash talk for the challenger.
Payout Perspective:
The UFC has not hit 1 million PPV buys since Brock Lesnar lost the Heavyweight title to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 on October 21, 2010. For those wondering, UFC 100 received 1.6 million buys on July 11, 2009.
The first Silva-Sonnen bout at UFC 117 in Oakland received 600 PPV buys. If you recall, Sonnen did most of the talking in hyping the fight as Silva was coming off of an embarrassing title defense in Abu Dhabi.
It seems like we’re getting a huge push for UFC 148 as this PPV may be the only one currently set that may hit 1M PPV buys. The UFC may get another shot with Jones-Hendo on September 1st but it happens Labor Day weekend and no other fights of note have been set. Certainly for 148, Silva’s trash talk should spur the venom between the two. As a result, many fans will definitely be interested in tuning in.
It took fewer than 90 seconds for Fedor Emelianenko to dispatch Pedro Rizzo in what might be the last stop on his retirement tour.
The former PRIDE heavyweight champion earned a first-round knockout to cap a brief night of fights at "M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Rizzo," which took place Thursday at Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Additionally, Kenny Garner unified the M-1 Global heavyweight title with a third-round TKO victory over Guram Gugenishvili.
The UFC 146 dominoes continue to fall following Friday night's announcement that Frank Mir, not Alistair Overeem, would fight Junior dos Santos for the heavyweight title at UFC 146. On Sunday, UFC president Dana White announced via Twitter that Cain Velasquez, Frank Mir's original opponent, will now meet Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva on May 26. White did not say who Roy Nelson, Silva's original opponent, will now face, but "Big Country" is expected to remain on the Memorial Day card. This fight will mark Silva's UFC debut and his first fight since getting knocked out by Daniel Cormier in Strikeforce last September. Velasquez hasn't fought since losing his heavyweight title to Junior dos Santos last November at UFC on FOX 1. As for Overeem, he has yet to fully address why his testosterone to epitestosterone ratio came back at an above-limit 14:1 following a March 27 drug test in Las Vegas. and he hasn't said anything since Friday's announcement that he would not be fighting dos Santos after all. According to a source close to Overeem's camp, the heavyweight is expected to release a written statement tomorrow morning at approximately 9 a.m. ET. to explain the situation from his perspective.
UFC 146's main card will air live on pay-per-view from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
It appears that Frank Mir is going to get another shot at championship gold a little sooner than expected, as he will lock horns with reigning champion Junior dos Santos in the UFC 146 main event.
Bellator Fighting Championships announced Wednesday that its sixth-season finale will feature Cole Konrad’s first defense of his heavyweight title, as “The Polar Bear” takes on Season 5 tournament winner Eric Prindle on May 25.

UFC 146′s recent trend of scheduling big heavyweight fights has continued as a bout between Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir has been verbally agreed to. Fox Sports reported the news earlier today, adding that the bout will determine the next challenger for the heavyweight title according to UFC President Dana White.
Velasquez last fought against UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos at UFC on Fox 1. Velazquez, reportedly struggling with a knee injury, was unable to get anything going in the short fight and lost his title via TKO.
Mir last fought at UFC 140, where he achieved a historic and gruesome submission victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Mir will be looking to extend his current three-fight win streak to four.
UFC 146 takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 26. The card will be headlined by a heavyweight title fight between champion Junior Dos Santos and former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem.

It's been rumored for a month, but on Tuesday it became official. Junior dos Santos will defend the heavyweight title against Alistair Overeem on May 26 at UFC 146 in Las Vegas.
All that was left was the formality of it, and that came Tuesday. The UFC made official Junior dos Santos' first defense of the heavyweight title. The Brazilian champion will defend the belt in the main event of UFC 146 on May 26 in Las Vegas against top contender Alistair
Junior dos Santos will defend his heavyweight title for the first time when he meets Alistair Overeem at UFC 146 on May 26 in Las Vegas, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta announced.
Last night UFC executive Lorenzo Fertitta appears to have potentially spilled the beans regarding the date/location of Junior dos Santos‘ upcoming defense of his heavyweight title against Alistair Overeem.
While talking with fans on his Twitter account, Fertitta said that the UFC was looking at JDS-Overeem for UFC 146 on May 26 from Las Vegas, Nevada. The Memorial Day Weekend tag would make sense considering the show’s annual standing as one of the organization’s biggest.
Dos Santos (14-1) won the heavyweight title by defeating Cain Velasquez late in 2011, scoring a first round knockout of the former undefeated champion. He has been on the sidelines since recovering from knee surgery.
Overeem (36-11) made an impact in his UFC debut, knocking out ex-champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 to secure the #1 position in the division. “The Reem” is a former Strikeforce heavyweight champ, along with holding titles in several other organizations, and has finished 34 of the 36 opponents he’s beaten.

Two hip surgeries and a knee surgery behind him, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is finally healthy and ready to get back to his championship form from just a few years ago.
Wow, Junior Dos Santos has had an awesome week. Red carpet treatment in Hollywood, wins the heavyweight title, gets mobbed at an airport by rabid fans with trumpets, and to top it all off he gets to ride in a fire truck? To the victor go the spoils, indeed. He probably stood upright on top of that fire truck as it drove him home too. Bum knee or not, JDS just leaned forward into the wind and dipped with the turns. That's how 'on' this guy is right now. Watch this video of JDS doing his best rockstar impression below.
OK, so we didn't actually see him ride away on top of the truck...But I bet he did.

Dana White’s first UFC 139 video blog was released today ahead of Saturday’s event, but featured a recap of this past weekend’s UFC on Fox debut, which saw Junior dos Santos claim the heavyweight title with a 64-second knockout of champion Cain Velasquez.
UFC 139 is headlined by light heavyweight contenders Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and also features Wanderlei Silva vs. Cung Le and Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles.

After the heavyweight title changed hands at the weekend UFC president Dana White himself admitted that Junior Dos Santos struggles in the later stages...
The UFC is putting its best foot forward tonight (Sat., Nov. 12, 2011) with its landmark UFC on FOX 1: "Velasquez vs. Dos Santos" event airing live and free on network television. The big boys will be out to play, as Cain Velasquez defends his heavyweight title against Junior dos Santos.
But there's an even bigger (figuratively) match-up going down later in the evening.
That's because pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is back in action tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, against formidable foe and longtime rival, Juan Manuel Marquez.
These two have fought twice before, once in 2004 (read all about it right here) and again in 2008 (get up to date on that one right here).
So how does "Pacman" prepare for a man he's fought twice already? The HBO 24/7 crew followed both fighters and found out in the lead-up to tonight's explosive showdown. Watch every episode to catch yourself up after the jump.
Filed under: UFC, UFC on FOXROSEMEAD, Calif. -- If it feels like we've been here before, that's because we have. Just a little over a year ago, in fact, and in this same exact place. That was a very different fight week -- big for different reasons. It was the Brock Lesnar show, and that show went where it pleased and performed on its own terms.
Back then, when it was time for the main card fighters at UFC 121 to go through the plodding PR paces of the open workout, Lesnar was nowhere to be found. But Cain Velasquez, then the challenger for the heavyweight title, still had to show up at the UFC gym in Rosemead and be a good soldier, which is exactly what he did.
Nearly 13 months later, Velasquez is back here against a very different opponent in a very different fight, but some things haven't changed.
At around noon on Thursday afternoon the UFC heavyweight champ strolls into the same exact gym with the same unassuming air that he had last year. And, just like last year, he had his fans there waiting for him, waving Mexican flags and cheering him on as he stepped in the cage to throw a few perfunctory punches and kicks at the air for the sake of the cameras.
But this time it's not about the celebrity of one of the participants. Bizarrely, it's not even really about the heavyweight title. Sure, it's there. It's a part of the package, but it feels more like an accessory than the real prize. How can you tell? Just listen to the questions he's peppered with as he moves down the seemingly endless media assembly line.
Are you nervous about representing the UFC and the sport of MMA itself on network TV? Are you feeling the pressure from your boss, from the fans? In other words, are you freaking out yet, or are you going to wait until later?
And for whatever reason -- maybe because it's true, or maybe just because his fighter's instinct is to resist pressure rather than succumb to it -- the champ refuses to play along. He's not especially nervous, he says. It's just another fight. He doesn't think about the stakes involved or the millions who'll be watching. He won't even admit to feeling the pressure of the champion or the betting favorite.
"I feel like every time I go out to fight, I'm always the underdog," he insists.
His trainer, Javier Mendez, stands nearby chatting with reporters and looking up with genuine surprise when nearby fans want their pictures taken with them.
"This is all your guys' fault," he grumbles to the reporters before going over to fulfill his obligations as a newfound semi-celebrity. This didn't happen back before he was known as the champ's trainer, but such is the brave new world he finds himself in, for better or worse.
Velasquez's opponent, Junior dos Santos, who shows up for his workout more than an hour later, also won't admit to feeling the heat. If anything, he does an even better job of selling his media tormenters on how relaxed he is, smiling through the multitude of interviews as if he's actually having an okay time.
"When you are nice, nice things happen to you," he explains, as if it's the simplest, most obvious philosophy in the world. Like, haven't you guys figured that out by now?
When asked how he managed to go from MMA neophyte to heavyweight title challenger on live network TV in just six years, he answers quickly: "Work. And be nice."
You want outsized egos and superstar personalities? You want guys at each others' throats? Too bad. Regardless of what you want, this is what you're getting. It'll have to be good enough, at least for now. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
