The Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix tournament is finally over.
It started back on Feb. 12, 2011, when Antonio Silva shocked the world by beating Fedor Emelianenko into a pulp to force a stoppage in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the evening, Sergei Kharitonov knocked out Andrei Arlovski in the first round to advance on the other side of the bracket.
Then on June 18, 2011, Alistair Overeem won a bizarre fight against Fabricio Werdum while Josh Barnett ran through Brett Rogers to set up the semifinals. Sadly, "The Reem" was cut from Strikeforce not long after this and headed for the UFC in the winter.
All was well, because his replacement, Daniel Cormier, would go on to become the tournament champion.
He knocked out "Bigfoot" Silva in the first round of their semifinal contest on Sept. 10, 2011, while Barnett submitted his second straight opponent to lead to their showdown that went down earlier tonight (Sat., May 19, 2012) at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
Cormier dominated the fight, showing off his wide range of skills and silencing any and all remaining doubters. Despite his age and relative lack of experience, this man is a beast who can seriously go once the cage door closes. The future holds one last fight under the Strikeforce banner before a move to the Octagon and the greener pastures of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Allow me to channel Bart Scott while also speaking for everyone when I say -- can't wait.

Want to become M-1 Global's Light Heavyweight Champion, but not have to get punched in the face or submitted by former titleholder Vinny Magalhaes in the process?
No problem! Just buy his belt on Ebay.
That's right, the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Champion, who continues his war of words with M-1 Global Director of Operations Evgeni Kogan, says he's done with the overseas promotion after they failed to give him a title defense while under contract.
That means he's got no reason to hold on to the strap and has offered it to the highest bidder, which as of Monday morning (May 14, 2012) is right around $2,600. Not bad for a guy that was one fight away from winning The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 Finale.
The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt, who is also training Chael Sonnen in his spare time, is the winner of five straight, finishing all five of his opponents in the process en route to capturing M-1's 205-pound title. And that didn't stop him from packing on a few pounds to win the 99 kilogram division of the 2011 ADCC submission grappling world championships by defeating Fabricio Werdum.
Now you can own a piece of mixed martial arts (MMA) history for a few thousand bucks. Just don't be surprised if the M-1 mafia shows up at your house, asking to have it back.

The UFC sent out a press release today confirming the “Mineirinho” stadium (Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond) in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil as the official site of the UFC 147 fight card.
UFC 147 was initially scheduled for a stadium in Rio de Janeiro and would have featured the highly-anticipated rematch between UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. Conflict with the United Nations’ Rio+20 conference saw the title fight bumped up to UFC 148 and the card’s location change.
Now, UFC 147 is to be headlined by a middleweight match up between Brazilian MMA icons Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort. The two seasoned vets fought each other at UFC Brazil in 1998, with Belfort earning a quick TKO win over Silva that’s been immortalized in highlight videos since. The two fighters recently coached opposing teams on the first international edition of The Ultimate Fighter, TUF: Brazil.
The last episode of the previously taped show will air a week before UFC 147, with the show’s finals matches also set to take place at the event. A heavyweight match up between Fabricio Werdum and Mike Russow is also expected for the card, which is scheduled to take place on June 23.

It has been a tumultuous week of scheduling for UFC 147 but the dust finally appears to be settling as UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo is likely to face Erik Koch in the main event. According to MMAWeekly, the bout has not been officially signed but it has been confirmed by sources close to both parties.
Aldo had been expected to fight the winner of the “UFC on Fuel TV 3″ main event between Dustin Poirier and Chan Sung Jung at UFC 149. That changed when the UFC moved an anticipated middleweight title rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen was moved from UFC 147 to UFC 148 in Las Vegas.
With Aldo’s fight date being moved up, it was difficult to expect that either Poirier or Jung would be able to be medically cleared, much less ready for a title fight, in little over a month.
Koch had originally been expected to face Poirier in February to decide to the number one contender until Koch suffered an injury. Now healed, the dynamic Duke Rufous product will look to take the title in the champion’s home nation.
UFC 147 is set for June 23 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and is expected to co-headlined by a middleweight bout between Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva. The event is also expected to have both the middleweight and featherweight finals of TUF Brazil, as well as a heavyweight bout between Fabricio Werdum and Mike Russow. No venue has currently been set as this post.

The heavyweight shuffle continues.
Gabriel Gonzaga has been removed from his UFC 146 match-up against Shane del Rosario and is now slated to face TUF 10 winner Roy Nelson at the May 26 event. UFC President Dana White confirmed the switch on Monday afternoon via Twitter.
As of this writing, it's unknown if del Rosario will remain on the card.
Nelson (16-7) was originally booked to fight Strikeforce veteran Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, however that match-up fell apart after Silva was tapped as Frank Mir's replacement against Cain Velasquez. Mir, of course, replaced Alistair Overeem in UFC 146's main event after Overeem failed a random drug test earlier this month.
"Big Country" now hopes to rebound after dropping three of his past four fights, including a bloody decision loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143.
Gonzaga (13-6), meanwhile, looks to continue his recent career resurgence since returning from retirement and defeating Edinaldo Oliveira via unanimous decision at UFC 142.
If you think Vinny Magalhaes is "that guy who got knocked out by Ryan Bader" in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 Finale, then you better ask somebody.
The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt is the winner of five straight, finishing all five of his opponents in the process en route to capturing the M-1 Global Light Heavyweight Championship. And in his spare time, he packed on a few pounds to win the 99 kilogram division of the 2011 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) submission grappling world championships by defeating Fabricio Werdum.
Not too shabby.
Those are the kind of credentials that keep you employed, and Magalhaes' next paying gig will take place in Oregon, where he'll lend his grappling expertise to current UFC middleweight number one contender Chael Sonnen, who unfortunately has a long history of tapping to Brazilians.
That includes a heartbreaking loss he suffered to Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 117 back in 2010, where he brutalized "The Spider" for four-and-a-half rounds prior to getting caught in a fight-ending triangle choke.
Will history repeat itself in their UFC 147 rematch on June 23 in Brazil? Not if Magalhaes, who Renzo Gracie says has the best jiu-jitsu in the heavyweight division, has anything to say about it.
But what about the critics who question his motivation behind training Sonnen, widely perceived as Brazil's number one enemy in all of mixed martial arts (MMA)?
Vinny says, "Shut the F--- Up."
From his official Twitter account:
I do have all these responsibilities, so If you're going to question why I'm going to train with Chael, why don't you just pay me to sit at home and not go to Oregon, I will do that for you without a problem, but if you are not willing to do that, sometimes is just better not give your opinion and shut the fuck up before you get all your facts straight.
Fedor wanted me to go there train with him, when the rumors were that he was going to have a rematch against Fabricio Werdum (A brazilian), did I go to Russia to train with him? No... Why I didn't? Because there was not going to be any pay for my services. I will always put my family in first place, I don't know if that's how you guys think, but with me If my family depends on me, I will do whatever I can to provide them the best I can.
Also, I'm Not sure if it was noticed, but on the title of the thread it clearly says "HIRES", I guess that makes it pretty clear that I'm not going there as a favor. And I guarantee that neither was Chael expecting me to leave my job and family just to help him as a favor.
Nothing personal, just business.
Let's get some feedback here, Maniacs. Sonnen is clearly making every possible effort to correct the mistakes that have plagued him throughout his career and has already proven he's got the juice to hang with Silva across five rounds.
But will it make a difference?

UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos was a massive underdog in his UFC debut against Fabricio Werdum. But his life changed with one giant right uppercut. Check out the video of Cigano's breakthrough moment ahead of the full episode at UFC.com in May.
UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos was a massive underdog in his UFC debut against Fabricio Werdum. But his life changed with one giant right uppercut. Check out the video of Cigano's...
That uppercut is a work of art.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gives fans a sneak peek of its 'Breakthrough" special on May 14, 2012, to help promote the UFC 146 pay-per-view (PPV) event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 26 in Las Vegas, Nevada. That's where reigning heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos will put his title on the line against feared Dutch striker Alistair Overeem.
But how did it all begin for "Cigano?"
Ask Fabricio Werdum, who had the unfortunate task of welcoming his fellow Brazilian into the ZUFFA family at UFC 90 way back in October 2008. Following the first-round knockout victory, Dos Santos was asked by reporters, "What did Werdum say to you when he entered the cage?" The soft-spoken rookie replied, "He said, 'I'm gonna smash you.' The follow-up question, was, naturally, "How did you respond?"
He replied, "We'll see."

Size does matter.
Strikeforce heavyweight import Antonio Silva will make his Octagon debut at the upcoming UFC 146: "Dos Santos vs. Overeem" pay-per-view (PPV) event scheduled for May 26, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
And he'll do it as the -225 favorite, according to our fiscal friends over at Best Fight Odds.
Silva (16-3) followed up the biggest win of his career, a technical knockout victory over Fedor Emelianenko, with his most crushing defeat, a knockout loss to Strikeforce 265-pound phenom Daniel Cormier.
Can he get back to his winning ways in his new home against another undersized heavyweight over the Memorial Day Weekend? The oddsmakers have indicated as much, pegging the bastion of Burger King a +175 underdog.
Nelson (16-7) is a mediocre 3-3 inside the Octagon. After retiring a debilitated Mirko Filipovic at last year's UFC 137, he was battered and bruised across three rounds by Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143 just over a month ago, prompting promotion president Dana White to once again ask him to lose some weight.
Not happening.
UFC 146 will be headlined by the biggest fight of the year (literally), when heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos puts his strap on the line for the very first time against division number one contender and famed Dutch striker Alistair Overeem.
Middleweight TUF guy Jason Miller is also back in action taking on the venerable C.B. Dollaway while Edson Barboza goes to war against Evan Dunham.

I still can’t believe Frank Mir snapped Nogueria’s arm like a wishbone at Thanksgiving. Because of him, I can’t play the wishbone game with my cousins whenever our family gathers for dinner. Just the thought of it makes me visualize Mir sending a vibration through his Nogueria’s torso and I become as squeamish as Paula Dean at a glance from a treadmill. Luckily for Big Nog, he has the regenerative ability of the vampires in True Blood and he’s already back at the gym training. In fact, if anyone is reluctant about fighting again, it’s Frank Mir, who turned down a fight with Fabricio Werdum because he doesn’t feel comfortable fighting in Brazil after dismembering one of their MMA heroes. Here he is talking about all the hate mail written in Portuguese that he has received in this video courtesy of CraveOnline.
After Fabricio Werdum made his successful return to the UFC last month, outpointing Roy Nelson in what was named Fight of the Night, it appears he now has an opponent lined up for his follow-up appearance inside the Octagon. While Werdum was thought to be in line for another big name given his past accomplishments and win over Nelson, he has instead been paired with red-hot Mike Russow.
Though not confirmed by the UFC, the match-up was reported by MMAFighting with both sides confirming the fight, as was the likely date/location involving the organization’s rumored June card in Brazil.
The 15-1 Russow has won eleven straight fights including four in the UFC, the most recent of which came at UFC on FOX 2 where he beat Jon Olav Einemo via decision. However, Werdum will mark a major step up in competition for the active-duty Chicago police officer compared to past adversaries the 35-year old has faced.
Werdum is an accomplished BJJer with brutal Muay Thai developed as part of the Chute Boxe Academy. He holds an overall record of 15-5 with wins over some of the division’s best including Gabriel Gonzaga, Antonio Silva, and Fedor Emelianenko.
The UFC has not formally announced a Brazilian show in June though have spoken publicly about the likelihood of one taking place with Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II in the headlining slot.

Roy Nelson probably didn't need to prove his toughness any more after he survived the beating he took from Fabricio Werdum in their heavyweight match on Feb. 4 at UFC 143 in Las Vegas. In video from Dana White's video … Continue reading →
The latest in a series of video blogs from UFC President Dana White has followed the lead of his previous entries by providing a “behind the scenes” glimpse at what goes on during an event.
In his first submission for this weekend’s show in Japan, White takes a look back at the fallout from UFC 143 including a solid portion of time in the locker-room of Nick Diaz moments after his controversial loss to Carlos Condit and impromptu retirement from MMA.
“He didn’t have nothing on those kicks. I’ve felt leg kicks before. Those were no leg kicks,” said Diaz, later admitting he could have possibly lost the third or fourth round but felt confident he’d earned the first, second, and fifth frames.

After losing to Junior dos Santos in 2008, Fabricio Werdum embarked on a career outside the UFC, signing with Strikeforce and earning the biggest victory of his life against heavyweight legend Fedor Emelianenko.
The UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit medical suspensions were released on Monday with Fabricio Werdum leading the list of those facing lengthy stints on the sidelines.
Roy Nelson shows off what happens when you take half a dozen knees directly to the face. While his matchup with Fabricio Werdum won FOTN honors, Roy is now 1-3 over his last four fights. He may not be long for the UFC if matchmakers don't put him up against opposition a bit closer to the gate.
Ouch.
Roy Nelson was bleeding like a stuck pig in his heavyweight fight against Fabricio Werdum last Saturday night (Feb. 4, 2012) in the co-main event of UFC 143: "Diac vs. Condit" from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Not hard to see why.
Nelson was battered across three rounds by the much larger "Vai Cavalo," eating several knees in the clinch and taking an inordinate amount of abuse en route to a unanimous decision loss.
"Big Country" summarizes:
"Here is the cut from me head butting Werdum's knee in the 1st. My face is fine, forehead is a little sore.gym monday, pissed and it's not the happy Roy, stitches total I want to say about 16-20 two cuts. As [an] entertainer I always must put on show to give it drama and suspense, and maybe a little horror (blood)."
The defeat to Werdum drops Nelson to 2-3 over his last five and 16-7 overall. Catch a complete recap of their fight plus all the action from UFC 143 right here.
MMAFrenzy’s coverage of Saturday’s main card continues with our preview of a heavyweight battle between Fabricio Werdum and Roy Nelson. Stay tuned to MMAFrenzy as we break down each fight on the main card and conclude with the main event interim welterweight championship bout between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit.
Keys for Fabricio Werdum (Chris Leslie)-
I have long believed that Fabricio Werdum is one of the best heavyweights in the world and it is hard to argue that he is not. His only losses since 2008 have been to former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem and UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos. He’s a large heavyweight with solid muay thai and some of the best BJJ in the business.
With Nelson, Werdum is facing a very strong BJJ practitioner who has a lot of power in his hands. Werdum can take advantage of this on his feet and he should. Werdum has both a reach and height advantage on Nelson, and while that didn’t mean much in Nelson vs. Struve, Werdum can take advantage of this by utilizing his reach and circling away with a stiff jab to stop Nelson’s haymakers. Werdum can win this on his feet and it makes sense to keep it there. One of the biggest parts of keeping this fight standing is to control the fence, Werdum cannot allow himself to get pinned against the fence for long periods of time. If he can keep this fight in the center, he can pick Nelson apart with counterstrikes and possibly secure takedowns as well.
One key thing to keep an eye on though is Werdum’s health, there were conflicting reports of his knee’s health during and following the Overeem fight. Once the knee starts to go bad, it usually doesn’t stop. So Werdum’s health is something to watch.
Keys for Roy Nelson (Bryan Robison)-
It seems Roy Nelson finds his way onto every UFC card in Las Vegas. Well, here he is again. He has taken on a gauntlet of opponents during his UFC career, with Junios dos Santos, Frank Mir, and Mirko Cro Cop as his last three opponents. That streak continues on Saturday with Nelson welcoming Fabricio Werdum back to the UFC.
Regarding Nelson, he has high confidence in his striking, specifically the power in his right hand. While he does not possess the overall striking of Werdum’s most recent opponent, Alistair Overeem, he has a better knockout ratio during his MMA career, with 40% of his fights ending in knockout. Meanwhile, Overeem has just a 31% knockout ratio during his career.
Nelson will look to do what he has always done, get inside his opponent’s range, and slam him with hard hooks. At 6’0, he knows he will rarely have a reach advantage, so he has always had a solid ability to make his way inside. Even though Werdum’s ability on the feet has come a long way over the last five years, he will still have to deal with Nelson’s power.
Plus, Nelson is one of the few guys that can hold his own against arguably the top heavyweight grappler in MMA in Werdum. While Nelson can be overpowered with wrestling, as seen in the bout with Frank Mir, Werdum does not possess that controlling strength.
In order to win, Nelson will have to make the fight look similar to Overeem’s gameplan, which is to keep it standing as long as he can. He will have to resist underestimating Werdum’s striking, which Overeem did not, which nearly cost him the decision.
In 2008, Fabricio Werdum was unceremoniously released from the UFC following a shocking TKO upset loss to then debuting heavyweight Junior Dos Santos. Heading into that fight there was talks that Werdum was not only close to a title shot but was also attempting to get more money from the UFC as well. Fans were stunned when it was reported that Werdum was released after a 2-2 run in the promotion. Adding to the confusion, Werdum initially denied that he was released from the promotion as he was not contacted directly from UFC brass.
At UFC 143 on Saturday, February 4th, Fabricio Werdum will make his long awaited return to the octagon. Matthew Roth of Bloody Elbow had a chance to catch up with the former ADCC champion to get his thoughts on the fight with Roy Nelson as well as the incredible win over Fedor Emelianenko in Strikeforce.
Regarding his return, he said "It feels good. I am very happy because this is my goal. I have campaigned on twitter. I have campaigned on Facebook. I put it on my mind that I wanted to return to the UFC." He added, "I didn't like my last fight in the UFC. It was the first knockout of my life -- of my career. But things have changed now. I'm more professional now. I'm training everyday. This time my body and my mind are good."
Werdum also spoke about his win over Fedor Emelianenko and how it compares to his wins at the ADCC in both 2007 and 2009. He stated "the only thing that could compare to my feeling I had when I beat Fedor is the day that my daughter was born. There is no other competition that could compare to that victory. The victory over Fedor is very special to me."
Fabricio Werdum faces Roy Nelson in the co-main event of the evening. UFC President Dana White was unable to commit to the winner of this fight being in line for a title shot but with the state of the heavyweight division, it is likely that the victor will be on the fast track.
SBN coverage of UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit
Ultimate Fighting Championship returns this weekend with UFC 143: Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit in Las Vegas, Nevada. Main event of the night will determine the identity of the Interim UFC Welterweight Champ, while rest of the card entertains with fighters such as Josh Koscheck, Roy Nelson and Fabricio Werdum.
This post will include all the pre-fight interviews, open workouts and weigh-ins footage. Also, make sure you don't miss the Heavy.com Fight Day this Saturday at 6PM
Frank Mir and Fabricio Werdum each own one of heavyweight MMA's greatest submission wins ever. For Mir it was his arm shattering kimura victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira while Werdum scored a quick triangle over Fedor Emelianenko.
With Werdum set to make his return to the UFC at tomorrow's UFC 143, Mir spoke to Tatame and gave some significant props to Fabricio:
Frank Mir talked exclusively to TATAME Magazine said he's not the best grappler in MMA's heavyweight division.
The American, who in last December submitted Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, said this "title" belongs to a Brazilian. "When people compliment my Jiu-Jitsu I also say (Fabricio) Werdum's is better than mine", Mir said, who through his career defeated names like Brock Lesnar, Tim Sylvia and Roberto Traven using the gentle art.
Werdum will face another talented grappler tomorrow night when he faces Roy Nelson.
SBN coverage of UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit
Saturday night, from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, two Welterweights known for rarely taking a step backwards, Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit, will collide in the UFC 143 headlining bout. Also featured will be TUF 10 winner Roy Nelson taking on Fabricio Werdum in the co-main event and former 170-pound title challenger Josh Koscheck meets Mike Pierce.
When it comes down to it, if I'm going to have a renowned actor to celebrate with post fight I don't want Steven Seagal, that guy is always wearing shooting range glasses that shade his dead eyes, and that creeps me out for some reason. I want to party with the Ghost Dog himself; Forest Whitaker. Roy Nelson may have the power of the Dwarven forge in his beard, but no one Roy knows has starred in a movie scored entirely by The RZA and directed by Jim Jarmusch of Fishing with John fame. Does this give Werdum some sort an edge come Saturday night? Maybe. Probably not. Definitely maybe though.
LayzieThe Savage caught up with Fabricio Werdum at the open workouts and discussed the implications of Saturday's fight with Roy Nelson. How many wins will it take for Werdum to get 'in the mix', does he like Roy and does he think the TUF winner and moon bellied Renzo Gracie black belt has anything for Vai Cavalo on the ground? All will be answered if you press the sideways triangle button in the bottom left of the box below these words.
As I'm sure you've heard by now, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 143 held a pre-fight press conference for the upcoming "Diaz vs. Condit" pay-per-view (PPV) event scheduled for the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sat., Feb. 4, 2012.
In attendance were headlining fighters Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit, as well as main card fighters Josh Koscheck, Mike Pierce, Roy Nelson and Fabricio Werdum.
You can check it out in the above video (starts at the 22:00 mark) or just skip to the cliff notes courtesy of our own UFC 143 press conference live blog right here.
Roy Nelson knows he's got a game-changing fight on his hands in facing Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143, but he knows how to win, punch him in the face more times than he punches back.
LAS VEGAS -- Watch below as Roy Nelson discusses his upcoming fight against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143, his thoughts on the new Werdum, Werdum's improved striking, why he thinks he's a better MMA grappler than Werdum, and his improved physique.
Fabricio Werdum won't look past Roy Nelson, whom he faces in his Octagon return at UFC 143 on Saturday night, but he does want another shot at Alistair Overeem as well.

Roy Nelson and steroids aren't something you usually read about in the same sentence. Unlike Alistair Overeem or Junior dos Santos , Nelson doesn't exactly come across as a body builder. But he knows that he has fought guys that have were on PED's before, and he knows that they're prevalent in the sport. He spoke to MMA Fighting about the subject, and doesn't seem too concerned about it:
"If I can compete with them, and they’re using, it just means I’m a better athlete," Nelson said. "That’s all it means to me."
Nelson also states that he's actually had fighters admit to using before he competed against them:
"You just know," he said. "You know by straight-out asking them. You can do it that way. Or you can go through their coaches or training partners. It’s a very small world."
...
"There’s some verbal combat involved," he explained. "You have to trick them into coming clean, but it does happen."
Apparently Roy isn't competing against MENSA members. While it looks obvious to all the world that Roy isn't someone who uses PED's, he does mention that his body type actually leads him to getting tested more. Why? Because the people doing the testing want it to look effective:
"I’ve probably been tested for steroids probably more than any other fighter that’s ever fought," he said. "...It’s like a football program. There’s always going to be some guys where it’s like, yeah, you’re the one we’ve got to test, because then the program looks clean."
That is something I never even considered before he said it, and is quite a valid point. Big Country squares off with Fabricio Werdum this weekend in the co-main event of UFC 143.
SBN coverage of UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit
"I started a campaign on Twitter and Facebook. I always ran after my dreams. I always went after everything I wanted. I always set my goals in my mind, and went to achieve them. I set the goal to fight again in the UFC. Because my motivation is to fight the best fighters. And I succeeded through my efforts, my training. My friends and my team helping me. Werdum Combat Team, Kings MMA. Everybody helped me a lot. Seven thousand people tweeted Dana White asking him to bring me back to the UFC. The fans want to see me back in there."
This whole social media thing is getting ridiculous, right? Not only can fighters campaign for bouts they want to get made and actually get their wish, now they're doing the same just to get back inside the Octagon. And if Fabricio Werdum is to be believed, that's what we can thank for his return bout against Roy Nelson this coming Sat., Feb. 4, 2012, at UFC 143 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The lesson here? Go tweet Dana White, Maniacs. You might end up inside the Octagon one day.
Fabricio Werdum was promptly let go by the UFC after Junior dos Santos knocked him out at UFC 90. Now that he’s back, he’s gunning for a rematch with the heavyweight champ as he states in this training video for UFC 143. It’s a tough road to get there though and it starts this weekend when he meets Roy Nelson at UFC 143.
Top Heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum, who will make his octagon return against Roy Nelson at UFC 143, talks about being back with the promotion after a three and a half year hiatus, and gives viewers an inside look at his training and preparation at Kings MMA. Werdum also discusses UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos, explaining that a rematch with "Cigano" would be the peak of his career.
A highly anticipated Welterweight showdown between "The Stockton Bad Boy" Nick Diaz and "The Natural Born Killer" Carlos Condit will headline the stacked UFC 143 fight card, set to take place February 4th from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also featured will be a Heavyweight clash pitting Roy Nelson against Fabricio Werdum, and former 170-pound title challenger, Josh Koscheck, takes on Mike Pierce.

The last time fans saw Fabricio Werdum inside the ring it resulted in a lackluster, at times confusing, performance against Alistair Overeem in the semifinal round of the Strikeforce World Grand Prix. During the bout Werdum repeatedly pulled guard rather than engage the hard-hitting Dutchman and never truly tried to force the issue through grappling.
When Werdum steps into the Octagon at UFC 143 against Roy Nelson he will attempt to erase memories of the match-up from the public’s conscience by turning in a far better showing. And, according to the 34-year old submission-specialist, he’s confident in his ability to do so based on some adjustments to his training schedule since then.
Werdum Lobbies for UFC Return
“Back then I was training too much and I suffered from overtraining,” Werdum revealed in a conversation with TATAME. “The fight was cancelled twice. I don’t give excuses when I lose, but it was different this time. I went through the line. Now I got in my mind I gotta speak less and do more. UFC and the fans want shows. I’ll get in the ring to knockout or be knocked out, there’s no other way. I’ll do my best in there.”
“After my last defeat I focused on weight lifting and conditioning trainings because I guess I lacked strength against Overeem,” he continued. “I’m training Jiu-Jitsu with the gi again, which is very important. Joao Assis is helping me a lot.”
Werdum also explained he understand putting away a tricky opponent like Nelson is easier said than done, stating, “There’s no easy fight anymore. Everybody knows a little bit of everything: Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai. It’s a different time we’re living in. Nelson knocked Mirko Filipovic out, he has a very strong right hand, sharp Boxing, but I’ll impose my rhythm and play by my game plan until I tire him out. Knocking out or submitting, I want to make it a good show.”
Fans can catch the two big men battle it out on February 4 as part of a card featuring Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit in the main event with an interim welterweight title on the line.

MMAWeekly.com's Erik Fontanez caught up with Fabricio Werdum at his gym in Southern California to get his feelings on his return and pending fight with Roy Nelson.
As expected, Fabricio Werdum is leaving Strikeforce and returning to the UFC for an upcoming fight with fellow heavyweight Roy Nelson.
MMAjunkie.com passed along news of the bout this past week, and the fighters recently tweeted confirmation of the matchup.
UFC 143 takes place on the eve of the NFL's Super Bowl, Feb. 4, at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
In the not too distant past Fabricio Werdum went on record as saying he expected his next fight to take place in the UFC, even going so far as to call out Brendan Schaub as the opponent he hoped to face. It now appears as though the UFC was listening and has granted the bulk of his wish, booking the 34-year old Brazilian in a bout at UFC 143 against a competitor from TUF 10. However, it won’t be “The Hybrid”.
According to a report from MMAWeekly that has since been confirmed by other outlets, Werdum will take on Roy Nelson at the February 4 event as part of a PPV card already headlined by Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit in an interim title-fight.
The match-up will mark the second run for Werdum after going 2-2 in his first stint with wins over Brandon Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga. The 14-5-1 “Vai Cavalo” then went on to rack up a 3-1 record in Strikeforce after parting ways with the UFC including his fantastic finish of then-unbeatable Fedor Emelianenko.
Werdum Discusses his Interest in UFC Return
Nelson, who beat Schaub at the Ultimate Fighter Season 10 Finale to become the season’s champ, is coming off a victory over Mirko Filipovic to snap a two-fight skid, losing a pair of decisions to Frank Mir and current heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos.
Other offerings slated for UFC 143 include Amir Sadollah vs. Jorge Lopez, Renan Barao vs. Scott Jorgensen, Erik Koch vs. Dustin Poirier, and Mike Pierce vs. Josh Koscheck.

It looks like Fabricio Werdum made the jump back to the UFC just in time before Dana White shuts down the Strikeforce → UFC talent pipeline.
MMA Weekly is reporting that Werdum has re-signed with the UFC and will take on Roy Nelson at UFC 143.
A UFC 143 heavyweight showdown between Roy Nelson and Fabricio Werdum is in tap for Super Bowl weekend, according to MMAWeekly.com sources.
MMA Junkie has since confirmed the report.
It’s kind of a late addition for a higher-profile fight, but after Georges St. Pierre withdrew from UFC 143 and the co-main event went from Josh Koscheck vs. Carlos Condit to Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce, the card was in a need of a little boost. Werdum vs. Nelson definitely fills that void.

A heavyweight bout between Roy Nelson and the returning Fabricio Werdum has been slotted for February's UFC 143 event.
Werdum will jump from Strikeforce to the UFC, where he fought from 2007 to 2008, as part of the long-rumored move.
MMAjunkie.com today confirmed the bout with event sources. MMAWeekly.com first reported it.
Just days after UFC President Dana White said that the fighters that are in Strikeforce would be staying in Strikeforce, MMAWeekly.com broke the news that Fabricio Werdum would be facing Roy Nelson at UFC 143.
Werdum is coming off a lackluster performance against Alistair Overeem in the quarterfinal round of the Strikeforce heavyweight World Grand Prix in June of this year. During the three round bout, Werdum was very reluctant to engage Overeem, the end result being a fight that contained very little
Many great battles that the MMA public will never see go down in training camps and workout sessions. Fans imagine the wars waged behind closed doors they may have witnessed if they had access to some of the top gyms in the sport.
Now a video has surfaced featuring two two competitors in fine form despite a significant difference in size, as Wanderlei Silva, while preparing for his fight with Cung Le at UFC 139, hooked up with Fabricio Werdum for a sparring session.
Though Werdum was the much larger opponent, “The Axe Murderer” seemed to be in rare form, displaying quick strikes and the aggressive style leading to so many memorable victories in the ring.
Silva went on to defeat Le via second round TKO, improving his career record to 34-11-1 and also taking home “Fight of the Night” honors.

The winner of the UFC 141 main event between former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem will be crowned the number one contender and challenge the winner of tomorrow’s UFC on Fox main event between current champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos next year, the UFC officially announced yesterday.
Lesnar (5-2) dropped the title to Velasquez just over one year ago to snap a four-fight win streak and hasn’t fought since as he recovered from colon surgery that forced him out of a June fight with dos Santos. Overeem (35-11) topped Fabricio Werdum in June in what would be his final Strikeforce fight before moving to the UFC on a 10-fight win streak.
UFC 141, which takes place on Friday, Dec. 30 in Las Vegas, also features lightweight contender Donald Cerrone vs. Nate Diaz and welterweight contender Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks.

The first time I met Daniel Cormier, he was showing Ariel Helwani an iPhone app he just downloaded. It was called 'iTranslate' and he was communicating to Fabricio Werdum in Portuguese via text. He thought it was one of the greatest cellular inventions in this decade, and it's pretty hard not to agree with him. I remember when the most prolific lyric in hip-hop was 'Switched from Motorola to a Primeco phone'. In the 1990s, people judged your status in society by the probability of you owning a Primeco phone. Remarkable. The determination of whether you were a 'baller' was directly influenced by your cellular provider. That company doesn't even exist anymore. I think it's safe to say that when archeologists unearth all the relics from the 21st century, scientists will credit Lil Troy for the decline of civilization. Hopefully these same archeologists will also discover this video of Daniel Cormier talking about potentially coming to UFC and fighting Shane Carwin for his first bout within the organization.
Don't be scared, Finky.
M-1 Global’s majority owner and Fedor Emelianenko’s longtime manager, Vadim Finklelstein, isn't pulling any punches this time around. Not after the former PRIDE Heavyweight Champion suffered three consecutive losses.
His star fighter will try to get himself back into the win column when he takes on Jeff Monson at M-1 Global: "Fedor vs. Monson" on Nov. 20 from the Olympic Arena in Moscow, Russia, live on pay-per-view.
Fink tells Loretta Hunt at SI.com he's hoping Fedor's "luck" will return and that he will be free of any "psychological pressure" on fight night:
"Prior to his last fight (against Henderson), Fedor’s wife was giving birth right as he was flying over. He actually found out about the birth of his (third) daughter as he made a connecting flight in Germany on his way to Chicago. There were some medical complications with the birth and he was extremely worried. It was a difficult time and there was a lot of psychological pressure, so maybe he wasn’t all there in his mind. All I can do is hope is Fedor’s luck will return to him again. I’m always worried, though. I’m worried before this fight in November."
Emelianenko was recently released from his contract with Strikeforce after a first round technical knockout loss to Dan Henderson in late July. It marked the third consecutive defeat for "The Last Emperor," who amassed one of the most impressive career resumes in the history of organized fighting under the Pride FC banner prior to the slump.
The Russian cyborg, who has called five different promotions home during his decade-long career, refused to hang up the gloves after his most recent loss to Henderson, which he felt was perhaps stopped too soon.
He'll get his chance for redemption when he takes on the "Snowman," a 54-fight veteran, who has won eight of his last nine bouts against no one really that noteworthy.
Monson most recently dropped a unanimous decision to Daniel Cormier at Strikeforce: "Overeem vs. Werdum" on June 18, 2011. The American Top Team (ATT)-trained fighter looked every one of his 40 years, getting battered and bruised by the much quicker, and younger, heavyweight prospect.
Despite his lackluster performance, Monson, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and a two-time ADCC champion, remains a significant threat to submit anyone if he can get the fight to the floor. Emelianenko, however, has been tapped just once (Fabricio Werdum) in 36 career fights.
Anyone think that M-1 Global is afraid the gravy train will no longer leave the station? Or is Finkelstein genuinely concerned about the welfare of his prize thoroughbred?
Anyone care to speculate?
It looks like Fabricio Werdum already has another opponent in mind for his second stint in the UFC after rumored foe Shane Carwin withdrew his name from the remainder of 2011 after announcing he’d undergone surgery to repair an injury he sustained while training for a possible December 30 dance with the Brazilian.
Werdum, the first man to ever definitively defeat Fedor Emelianenko, wants Brendan Schaub in the Octagon and expressed his interest in fighting him publicly late last night through Twitter. Schaub has also recently expressed his desire to scrap with Werdum giving even more substance to the likelihood of the two heavyweights giving it a go before year’s end.
“I’m ready for you, anytime, anywhere,” Werdum wrote in reference to Schaub.
Though no date is set given the far-from-official nature of the bout, chances are it could take place at UFC 141 given some statements from his management team regarding Werdum’s return to the UFC.
Werdum Could Be Back in UFC by New Year’s Eve
Schaub is coming off a knockout loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 133 but had picked up four straight wins prior to the stumble including a brutal finish of Mirko Filipovic this past March.
Comparably, “Vai Cavalo” holds an overall record of 14-5-1 with twelve stoppages including eight through his bread-and-butter, BJJ. In addition to Emelianenko, Werdum holds past victories over Brandon Vera, Gabriel Gonzaga, Antonio Silva, and Alistair Overeem.

Following UFC on Versus 6, UFC President Dana White said that the promotion was interested in possibly bring Fabricio Werdum back into the UFC. That card took place on October 1, since then there has not been a great deal of talk on the subject. However, if Werdum does sign with the UFC it looks like the promotion has a fighter more than willing to meet him in the Octagon.
Yesterday Werdum tweeted, “Brendan Schaub, I’m ready for you. Anytime, anywhere.”
Today, Schaub responded
A fight between Fabricio Werdum and Brendan Schaub seems all but inevitable in the near future.Werdum is widely believed to have negotiated, or be negotiating,...
Rumor has it that Fabricio Werdum is in talks to return to the UFC. Other rumors even suggested that Werdum may have been Shane Carwin’s targeted opponent at UFC 141 until Carwin injured his back and decided to have surgery.
However, when Fight Hub caught up with Werdum and asked him about the rumors, Werdum pretty much shot them down, saying that he hasn’t spoken with anybody at the UFC. Of course, Werdum added that he couldn’t say anything even if he was talking to them, so it’s possible he’s just playing coy for now.
Despite many rumors to the contrary, Fabricio Werdum tells FightHubTV.com he has had no contact with the UFC. He has stated, though, that he would love to make the jump back to the world's largest fight promotion. It seems it's just a matter of time.

"I don't have nothing. I just have my contract with Strikeforce. But for sure, I want to come back to UFC for sure because UFC is the best event in the world. The guys give me a chance, for sure I'll come back."
A financial dispute combined with a crushing knockout loss to Junior dos Santos sent Fabricio Werdum packing from the UFC back in 2008. He immediately jumped to Strikeforce and ripped off three wins, including a first round submission win over Fedor Emelianenko. He may have recently lost an uninspired decision to Alistair Overeem just this past June but he's still a fairly high ranked heavyweight with plenty to offer the UFC. Anyone hoping he shows back up in the world's largest fight promotion sooner rather than later?
It appears Heavyweight jiu-jitsu phenom Fabricio Werdum could be on his way back to the octagon. The Brazilian parted ways with the organization back in 2008 following a 2-2 stint that was punctuated by a vicious first-round knockout loss to a debuting Junior dos Santos. In the time since Werdum has strung together a respectable 3-1 mark under the Strikeforce banner, which includes a shock submission victory over then undefeated Fedor Emelianenko.
"He’s back to the trainings, he’s making everybody laugh. He’ll probably fight in December… He’s talking to the UFC, and maybe they come up with something for December. I like the idea, he deserves it. In case it actually happens, UFC is the place he should’ve never left. The bests are there, and there’s where Werdum belongs."
Sounds like Rafael Cordeiro has this thing locked down. The King's MMA coach tells Tatame.com that Strikeforce heavyweight grappling stud Fabricio Werdum, who was bounced out of the promotion's grand prix tournament after stinking up the American Airlines Center against Alistair Overeem back on June 18 in Dallas, could be back inside the cage by December. But will it be under the UFC banner? Cordeiro seems to think it's a place "Vai Cavalo" should have never left. Do you agree? Can the Brazilian be competitive in today's heavyweight landscape? Or will the UFC power-punchers (hello, Junior dos Santos) send him back to Abu Dhabi with his gi between his legs?
The strange journey of Fabricio Werdum has a familiar port in sight where the 34-year old Brazilian may be landing sooner than many fans think – the UFC.
Werdum’s previous stint in the Octagon came between 2007-2008 where he split four fights with his final appearance involving a strike-based stoppage to a debuting Junior dos Santos where “Vai Cavalo” appeared to be in lackluster shape. The defeat cost him an expected title-shot and ultimately his employment in the organization.
The Chute Boxe competitor then joined Strikeforce, stringing together three wins including the first definitive defeat of Fedor Emelianenko before his strange, guard-pulling performance against Alistair Overeem in the promotion’s Grand Prix this past June.
Now it appears he could be slated to return to the ring in December but not at Strikeforce’s show on the 17th. Rather, according to trainer Rafael Cordeiro, Werdum’s next stop could be in the UFC.
“He’s back to (training), he’s making everybody laugh. He’ll probably fight in December… He’s talking to the UFC, and maybe they come up with something for December,” said Cordeiro in an interview with Tatame.
December options include the Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale (12/3), UFC 140 (12/10), and UFC 141 (12/30), the latter of which is the most logical spot given the other card’s current line-ups and the notion Shane Carwin recently expressed he’d been training for a top-level opponent relating to the event before succumbing to injury.
Carwin Talks Potential UFC 141 Fight
Cordeiro went on to say he liked the idea of a second shot at gold in the world’s foremost MMA organization, adding, “UFC is the place he should’ve never left. The best (fighters) are there, and (that’s) where Werdum belongs.”
The 14-5-1 Werdum has only won two fights in his career via decision, racking up eight submissions and four TKOs including those in wins over Emelianenko, Overeem (earlier in PRIDE), Brandon Vera, and Gabriel Gonzaga.

Few weeks ago, former TUF 8 contestant Vinny Magalhaes added another title to his endless list of grappling achievements, this time defeating the legendary Fabricio Werdum by points at the ADCC +99kg Final event in Nottingham, England. The contest was highlighted by Magalhaes' incredible display of flexibility, as Fabricio Werdum locked a super tight armbar that twisted-the-twist out of Pezao's elbow. Still, reigning M-1 Challenge Light Heavyweight Champion refused to tap and eventually found his way out
Fabricio Werdum will soon be ready to return to the cage now that the ADCC's are over, and he doesn't seem to care where it's going to be. Werdum is coming off a loss in the quarter-finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix to Alistair Overeem in June, and apparently knows what he needs to improve upon. He spoke to Sherdog about it:
"I still have some fights under my Strikeforce contract and I don’t know yet if my fight in December will be for them or for UFC," Werdum told Sherdog.com. "What I can say is that I learned a lot after the Overeem fight and I saw some things I needed to fix. I had a lot of strength and brutal power training, and I’m feeling much stronger. I'm sure I’ll have a great victory and I’ll dominate in 2012."
Werdum has been working with King's MMA in California, and has a lot of nice things to say about his camp:
"Can you imagine all the motivation from having these guys in the camp?" asked Werdum. "Shogun, Wanderlei, Munoz, Andre ‘Dida’ [Amado], Babalu, Jake Ellenberger... not to mention Rafael Cordeiro’s investments in expansion which made Kings MMA a great facility. With all those guys fighting so close to each other, I just can predict a great end of the year and an even better 2012."
It is not yet known who Werdum would possibly face if he did return in December, but you'd have to think it would be in Strikeforce considering they do have a big show planned for that month in San Diego.
Fabricio Werdum earned a new level of respect in the MMA world when he became the man to end Fedor Emelianenko’s 10-year dynasty. However, one year later, a poor performance against Alistair Overeem in the quarterfinals of Strikeforce’s 2011 heavyweight grand prix took away all hype and even turned many fans against him.
