Nick Diaz suspended for a year, fined $60,000 for failed drug test

Any hopes of UFC welterweight Nick Diaz beating the rap for a failed drug test and returning to the ring rather than remain retired were dashed earlier today when the Nevada State Athletic Commission reviewed his case, shrugged off his team’s arguments, and threw the book at him for their trouble. Diaz, who has been at outspoken proponent of marijuana use and receives it legally in California, was popped for “marijuana metabolites” in his system after a February fight with Carlos Condit. As a result of the NSAC’s findings Diaz will be suspended from competition for a year and was fined 30% of his purse from the bout (equating to $60,000). A Look at Diaz’s Case Against Suspension Diaz tested positive for marijuana use five years ago after a match-up with Takanori Gomi, also in Nevada, and was handed a six-month suspension in that instance. The 28-year old has not commented publicly on the matter but, at least for the time being, it appears his MMA career is officially over (or at least until 2013). PHOTO CREDIT – UFC Tweet

NSAC issues one-year suspension, fine to Nick Diaz

In a hearing that stretched over three hours and two rooms within the Grant Sawyer Office Building in Las Vegas, the Nevada State Athletic Commission unanimously voted today to suspend Nick Diaz for his failed drug test at UFC 143. Diaz's suspension runs 12 months from the date of the event, which took place Feb. 4. Additionally, he has been fined $60,000, or 30 percent of his $200,000 show purse. Diaz, who was present at hearing, must also submit a clean drug test in order to be licensed again in Nevada.

Nick Diaz suspended 12 months by NSAC for failed drug test, fined 30-percent of purse for Carlos Condit fight

After a hearing that dragged on for what felt like hours and hours, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) brought the hammer down earlier today (Mon., May 21, 2012) on Nick Diaz for his failed drug test for marijuana metabolites at UFC 143 back on Feb. 4, 2012, in Las Vegas. And they didn't hold back one bit. That's because Diaz was suspended for 12 months retroactive to the date of his fight against Carlos Condit, which means he'll be out of action until at least February 2013. On top of that, he was fined 30-percent of his entire fight purse. If that seems harsh, well, that's because it is. Remember, Alistair Overeem was suspended for nine months after he tested with a T/E ratio of 14:1 and reportedly attempted to duck out on tests. Then again, this was Diaz's second drug test failure for marijuana in the state of Nevada, the first coming all the way back in 2007 after his thrilling submission victory over Takanori Gomi. He was suspended six months and fined 20-percent of his purse for that first offense. Cristiane Santos coming back as a bantamweight

When former featherweight champion Cristiane Santos makes her way back into the Strikeforce cage it seems she’ll be focused on an eventual face-off with current bantamweight title-holder Ronda Rousey rather than reclaiming the belt she once held at 145 pounds. Santos was stripped of her strap after testing positive for steroid use and is currently serving a suspension until December. However, when her time on the sidelines expires she’ll be ready to go again but at 135 pounds this time around. Santos revealed her intention on Twitter when asked about the slimmed-down physique she exhibited on a few pictures she’d posted. “Cyborg” Explains Her Side of Failed Drug Test The Strikeforce bantamweight division is relatively solid as is the weight-class in general, especially by comparison to the talent pool at featherweight. Among the notable 135ers available for Santos outside of Rousey, Sarah Kaufman and Miesha Tate also both currently call the promotion home. PHOTO CREDIT – STRIKEFORCE Tweet

'King' Mo Lawal Signs With Bellator, TNA Wrestling

"King" Muhammed Lawal has had a rough go of it lately. First came word that he failed a drug test after beating Lorenz Larkin in his last Strikeforce event, then Mo went through a major health scare. Still dealing with the aftereffects of the staph infection that left him weakened and forced to deal with multiple medical procedures, Mo went to his Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing and picked up a nine month suspension. Following the suspension, Mo went on Twitter and called one of the commission representatives a "racist bitch" for asking if he read and understood English after it was established that he just signed his forms (which did not list the supplement Mo's camp claim caused him to fail his drug test) after his manager filled them out. Following that whole situation, Zuffa released Mo from his contract. At the time my theory was that they'd allow him to serve his suspension and then re-sign him. But now it looks like Bellator will be the light heavyweight's home and he'll add a pro-wrestling career to the mix also. Via Sherdog: Sherdog.com confirmed with sources close to the situation on Wednesday that "King Mo" is expected to sign with both Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and the Bellator Fighting Championships in the near future. According to Sherdog's sources, the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion will likely perform simultaneously for the professional wrestling organization and the Chicago-based MMA promoter. Details surrounding the deals were not revealed. Of course, Mo is going to have to finish recovering from his health situation before he can fight or wrestle. Once he recovers and his suspension is up, he'll still have to get re-licensed. Given that he did issue an apology for the "racist bitch" comment and was up front about the situation during his hearing, there's no reason he won't be granted his license without much trouble. Every time I've ever tried to watch TNA Impact Wrestling I've found it flat out horrible. Between the awful crowd and the terrible storylines, it's just awful. At the same time, Mo could make some decent money between the two careers, so best of luck to him with his future. It's just a little unfortunate that we won't get to see him tested very much in professional MMA with as bad as the Bellator light heavyweight division is.

Hector Lombard requests random drug test prior to UFC debut against Brian Stann

Though it's not exactly "random" if you call the commission and ask, "Hey, can you guys come test me?' Nevertheless, the former Bellator Middleweight Champion wants to prove to the world that his muscular physique came the old-fashioned way: through proper diet and hard work inside the gym. "Lightning" took to his Twitter account on Sunday night (April 29, 2012) to respond to MMAmania.com Brazilian correspondent Eduardo Cruz, who simply asked the Cuban-born Australian what his testosterone levels were. Lombard's response: You guys are going to know the levels soon! Can we make a random drug test before my fight??? UFC's Newest Fighter Hector Lombard Asks For A 'Random Drug Test'

Bellator Middleweight champion Hector Lombard, newly signed to the UFC as of last week, has tweeted an unusual request: "Can we make a random drug test before my fight???" Lombard, an extremely well-muscled 185 pounder, is apparently responding to the controversy surrounding UFC Heavyweight and former Strikeforce, Dream and K-1 champ Alistair Overeem who has struggled with drug testing since joining the UFC. Overeem first drew the ire of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) when he left the country and missed a surprise urine test before his UFC 141 bout with Brock Lesnar. He was eventually able to secure a conditional license to fight after passing a urine test and enduring a hearing a few weeks later. But Overeem's luck ran out when he failed a drug test on March 27 after a press conference to promote his Heavyweight title fight at UFC 146. After trying to leave the press conference untested, Overeem pissed hot with a 14:1 testosterone:epitestosterone ratio. The limit in Nevada is 6:1. The NSAC has refused to license Overeem for 9 months and he is missing UFC 146. Lombard is expected to face Brian Stann in his UFC debut. Randy Couture talks TRT

There are a lot of black and white issues in MMA. However, one area of gray pertains to the use of testosterone replacement therapy by fighters hoping to extend their careers. Though it’s a natural substance and prescribed by doctors, it’s also a performance enhancing process based on replenishing testosterone otherwise lost by the aging process. A fighter who knows a thing or two about competing at a high level despite coming into the sport at a late age is Randy Couture, the former double-divisional champion who fought well into his 40s. Couture recently weighed in on the topic of TRT in an interview with MMAFrenzy where he had some interesting insight into the matter. “There is such fine line with all of the anti-aging stuff that’s out there now,” began Couture on the topic. “TRT is generally something a guy does in their 40’s and 50’s when their natural production of testosterone drops off. There are other natural ways to boost your own body’s production without replacing it and it’s safer as well, but it still should be under the care of a physician. It’s a very fine and a very personal thing and there is no easy answer.” “An athlete is using his body to earn a living and entertain the fans, they want to get the most out of themselves, but sometimes they go too far with it,” Couture concluded, showing both understanding and concern. Recent examples of both situations include Quinton Jackson, who used testosterone to heal his knee faster than normal to be able to compete at an event in February, and Alistair Overeem, whose recent failed drug test for testosterone abuse cost him a title-fight and nine months of his career. Frank Mir expected Alistair Overeem’s spot at UFC 146

Former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir jumped at the opportunity presented to him when Alistair Overeem was removed from the main event at UFC 146. Now, Mir will seek the place the gold belt back around his waist again when he squares off with Junior dos Santos at the May 26 show. Overeem’s troubles with a failed drug test pushed the UFC to make a decision on the fight even before he was denied his license on Tuesday. Mir was installed as the next contender, being moved out of a planned #1 contender match with Cain Velasquez. “I just kind of did the math in my own mind,” said Mir, during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour. “My team around me, we all pretty much felt that if dos Santos were to stay on the card, and Overeem was not able to challenge for the title, then I was the most logical person to step in.” Mir added that he never stopped training for Velasquez but Dos Santos remained in the back of his mind. Mir has won four of his last five fights, including wins over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Roy Nelson, and Mirko Filipovic. Mir broke the arm of Nogueira who is the mentor and a training partner of Dos Santos. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC

Dana White Thought the NSAC Would Give Alistair Overeem a Stiffer Penalty

Dana White isn't happy with Alistair Overeem, but he hasn't decided whether the former No. 1 contender still has a job with the UFC. The UFC president was informed by popular radio host Jim Rome on Wednesday of the nine-month punishment Overeem received on Tuesday after the Nevada State Athletic Commission denied his request for a license. And upon hearing the news, White said that he expected the NSAC to come down harder on Overeem. "Nine months? Nine months isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be," White said. "I thought he would get a year. Easily a year." White is clearly upset with Overeem, who he has said repeatedly told him and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta multiple times that he was "the most tested man in sports." At Tuesday's NSAC hearing, Overeem said that he received an anti-inflammatory shot for an injured rib from a doctor in January, which unbeknownst to him, contained testosterone. He gave himself another shot right before he was asked to take a random drug test following a March 27 press conference in Las Vegas. He ended up failing the drug test when his testosterone to epitestosterone ratio came back at 14:1, which is more than double the NSAC's limit of 6:1. "I'm not a fan," White said. "I'm not a fan at all. You're not going to hear me today on your radio show defending Alistair Overeem. Believe me." White said on the radio show that he believes Overeem lied to the UFC, but considering his hectic travel schedule lately, he hasn't been able to get the full story of what transpired at Tuesday's hearing in Nevada. "We'll see what happens," White said when asked about Overeem's future in the UFC. "We'll see what happens, man." Listen to a portion of White's appearance on The Jim Rome Show below.

Alistair Overeem denied license by NSAC, out until late December

Earlier today heavyweight Alistair Overeem and his team did their best to convince the NSAC to issue a continuance relating to his hit for testosterone use, allowing them to further build their case, but were unanimously denied by the regulatory board and thus forced to address the issue in the hearing. As expected, Overeem explained his T:E ratio was thrown off by a doctor prescribed medication he ingested as an anti-inflammatory to deal with an injury, not knowing the substance contained testosterone. The physician was also on hand at the proceedings and did not dispute Overeem’s story though did state he recalled having told Overeem what was in the mixture he used. Overeem Issues Apology for Drug Testing Flub After all sides had spoken the NSAC ruled to deny Overeem a conditional license and will not approve him for competition in the State until December 27 (nine months from the date of the drug test). While Overeem could still get licensed elsewhere, athletic commissions have historically worked together when it comes to issues regarding fighters being punished. No comment has come from the UFC or Dana White on Overeem’s status since the NSAC’s decision. PHOTO CREDIT – STRIKEFORCE Tweet

NSAC denies Alistair Overeem fight license for period of nine months

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Alistair Overeem appeared in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today (April 24, 2012) to answer for a failed drug test administered back on March 27 in advance of the UFC 146 pay-per-view (PPV) event on May 26 in Las Vegas. "Demolition Man" returned a testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) level of 14:1, which he subsequently blamed on anti-inflammatory medication -- not performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) -- but it didn't stop the UFC from pulling him from his upcoming bout against Junior dos Santos and replacing him with former 265-pound champion Frank Mir. It turned out to be the right call. Overeem came into today's hearing saddled with the burden of proving that he was indeed the victim of bad medicine -- not bad intentions -- and requested a continuance from the NSAC to help his team prepare its case and "demonstrate Alistair's intent." Request denied. After a brief deliberation, the commission determined they had all the information they needed to proceed, and Overeem's doctor, who was also in attendance (and the mad scientist behind his recovery medication) only reinforced its decision to move forward. The crux of the Dutchman's defense was his failure to understand the contents in the injections of anti-inflammatory medication (mixed with testosterone) he was receiving -- and injecting himself -- to help expedite the healing process for an injured rib. Unfortunately his doctor, who is a male performance-enhancement expert, was popped in 2004 for dealing controlled substances over the Internet. Not a lot of due diligence performed by Team Reem, or so it would seem. Ultimately, the commission did not believe Overeem was trying to gain a competitive advantage inside the combat sports arena, but his ignorance of what he was putting into his body, regardless of how it was administered or by who, was simply too great to overlook, thus forcing a ruling against him. Overeem is now ineligible to apply for a license to fight in the state of Nevada for a period of nine months, retroactive to March 27, the date of his failed drug test. And he is expected to honor that ruling in any other state or International territory. What do you think Maniacs, are you satisfied with the result? Too harsh? Too lenient? Let's get some initial reactions in the comments section below and be sure to stay tuned to MMAmania.com for ongoing updates to this story as they develop. See how it all went down right here.

Frankie Edgar, Benson Henderson, and six others pass UFC 144 drug test

It may be sad to say, but in this current day and age,  it is actually a story in the world of MMA when competitors take a drug test and come back clean. As such, eight fighters from February’s UFC 144 card in Japan were tested and the entire lot came out spotless. All of the tests were negative for drugs of abuse (street drugs) along with PEDs. Based on the lack of regulatory board in the region UFC Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner helped lead the screenings. Benson Henderson, who became the new lightweight champion at the show, and opponent Frankie Edgar were among those tested. The other six fighters’ names were not disclosed to MMAJunkie which first reported the matter. Results from UFC on Fuel 2 are expected in the near future with the UFC also handling those tests as well based on it taking place in Sweden. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC

Nick Diaz vs Braulio Estima booked for World Jiu-Jitsu Expo on May 12

Nick Diaz may be on the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) sidelines awaiting punishment for his failed drug test following his UFC 143 loss to Carlos Condit but that doesn't mean he has to sit out altogether. No, the Stockton slugger and noted Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner will keep himself busy by competing in a superfight against Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Champion Braulio Estima at the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo (WJJE) on May 12, 2012, in Long Beach, California, according to a report from MMAFighting.com. Gracie also revealed that Diaz wanted to go all out and enter a tournament. However, at the behest of the WJJE, he will only compete in a superfight next month. The UFC is okay with Diaz competing because he doesn't currently have a fight lined up. The reason for that, of course, is that he's still awaiting his hearing in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) to determine his punishment for failing the aforementioned drug test at UFC 143. To read more on that click here. The good news, for MMA fans at least, is that Diaz likely isn't retiring from the fight game anytime soon. Not if Gracie has his way. As a clean fighter, the whole issue of performance enhancing drugs in MMA really pisses me off. This sport is about honor, technique and discipline. As a fighter, if you use PEDs, how does it feel good knowing that you won using them? Don’t do it, dummies! Alistair Overeem, the current No. 1 contender to the UFC heavyweight title, has come under fire for failing a drug test for elevated levels of testosterone. Overeem, however, isn’t the only fighter to receive a suspension for failing a drug test, as the whole situation seems to be causing a dark cloud to form over MMA as a whole. Hopefully, fighters will realize that they are hurting themselves, their friends and their profession by doing these illegal things and start taking better care of the situation by not doing it. What do you guys think? Should there be stiffer punishments for those that test positive?

Chael Sonnen-Jason “Mayhem” Miller take aim at each other on Twitter

Chael Sonnen doesn’t tend to let a fight – physical or verbal – go without getting in his fair share of blows. After making some remarks concerning Alistair Overeem and his failed drug test for elevated levels of testosterone over the weekend, Sonnen was verbally attacked by Jason “Mayhem” Miller. Apparently, like many fans, Miller seems to remember a certain contender failing a drug test following his loss to Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title in 2010. “Chael berating someone on their test level is like me making fun of someone’s bad haircut,” Miller posted on his Twitter account. The words struck a chord with Sonnen who quickly replied back on his own Twitter page with, “MayHem: Due to time constraints I am currently confining my Twitter wars to active, relevant, fighters ONLY. Buy a T-shirt on your way out.” The host of MTV’s Bully Beatdown and ex-Ultimate Fighter coach didn’t let it end there, replying back, “Don’t worry – you’re a beatdown away from obscurity. I’ll be happy to beat your head in – that’s if it’s not still on a pike in Rio.” Despite their conflict, Sonnen and Miller are not likely to meet up anytime soon inside the Octagon, as Sonnen has a title match set with Silva at UFC 147 in Brazil, while Miller is taking on C.B. Dollaway at UFC 146. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC

CSAC upholds Cristiane Santos’ twelve-month suspension

Though the public’s attention may be currently directed at Alistair Overeem pertaining to his recently failed drug test, the status surrounding another former Strikeforce champion with PED-related problems was addressed earlier today when Cristiane Santos failed to have her yearlong suspension reduced to six months after appealing the CSAC’s mandated punishment. As such she will be unable to apply to for a license until her sentence runs out in mid-December. “I want to thank all my fans, friends, coaches, Legal Counsel, sponsors, who are with me. Unfortunately we could not reduce my penalty. I’m sad … But after a storm in the morning see the sun shine,” wrote Santos on her Facebook page shortly after word came down from the California State Athletic Commission. The featherweight tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol after her successful title-defense against Hiroko Yamanaka in late 2011. As a result, the California State Athletic Commission changed the sixteen-second TKO victory to a No Contest and fined/suspended the 26-year old Brazilian. “Cyborg” claimed the banned substance was the result of using a dietary supplement she was told was legal. However, she ultimately accepted responsibility for putting it in her body without first-hand knowledge of the contents’ legitimacy. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC

Alistair Overeem officially applies for fighter's license in state of Nevada

According to report on MMAMania.com, current #1 contender for the UFC Heavyweight title, Alistair Overeem, has officially applied for a fighter's license in Nevada. This means Overeem will appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission on April 24th, trying to explain his failed drug test at last month's UFC 146 pre-fight press conference. In light of Dana White's recent statements about still having Cain Velasquez vs. Frank Mir on the card, it seems like the UFC have their "Plan B" ready, if NSAC

Alistair Overeem officially files for UFC 146 fight license in Nevada

As mentioned earlier here, Alistair Overeem has officially filed an application to obtain his fighter's license in Nevada, according to BleacherReport.com. His hearing is set for April 24 and Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) Executive Director Keith Kizer noted to B/R that he thinks "The Reem" will be in attendance on that day. Overeem recently failed a drug test for elevated levels of testosterone, creating doubt that he will be able to go ahead with his scheduled heavyweight championship fight at UFC 146 on May 26 in Las Vegas against Junior dos Santos. Also revealed in the report is that Overeem still isn't requesting for his "B" sample to be tested to confirm the result of his "A" sample. Seem like an admission of guilt? It's not, technically, but it certainly doesn't look good. Then again, "Demolition Man" must be confident in whatever explanation he has for failing his drug test. After all, if he's denied his license thanks to said failure, he would likely be sitting on the sidelines until this time next year. Unless, of course, the UFC decided to go against the Commission's ruling, which is doubtful. The promotion could also cut Overeem outright, something that seems entirely possibly considering how upset UFC President Dana White seemed to be once he was alerted to the situation. All told, there's still a lot left to happen in this bizarre case. Overeem still has yet to speak on the matter and it's entirely possible he'll keep quiet until he gets his day in court. That's the smart play, too. The UFC is also staying patient, having declared that a decision on the UFC 146 main event will not be made until after April 24 and Overeem's hearing. That gives more time to rally for Mark Hunt, or pine for Fedor Emelianenko, or hope Dan Henderson really does want to move up and fight for the heavyweight strap. As always, the only thing we can all do is stay tuned.

Junior Dos Santos Releases Statement via Twitter on Alistair Overeem Situation

It’s been an interesting period of time in the UFC as of late. Following Alistair Overeem’s positive drug test, many have pondered just who UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos will meet at UFC 146 – or if he will even compete on the card. For the most part, dos Santos has let everything take care of itself. However, “Cigano” finally posted a statement via his Twitter account in regards to the Overeem situation. I am professional and I’m champion without ever having used anything for better performance when you guys see me fighting that’s really me. About what happened to Overeem I don’t know anything more than you guys know and for me it’s between him and the Nevada Athletic Commission. I know a lot about me that’s it! Dos Santos and Overeem were set to headline the May 26 card from Las Vegas. It is possible that “The Reem” still receives his fight license if he provides a clean sample and is issued the license by the NSAC. However, we don’t even know if the UFC will want Overeem fighting for the title after all of this. UPDATE: In a release by the Associated Press, UFC president Dana White confirmed that dos Santos will still be fighting on the May card. White, however, did not go into detail about who “Cigano” would be defending his title against. Photo credit: Esther Lin/MMA Fighting

Medical Beat: What are T/E ratios? Any why do cutoff limits vary for testosterone?

Following UFC 146 headliner Alistair Overeem's failed drug test, my inbox is full of questions regarding T/E ratios and the like. So maybe it's time for a quick physiology primer for you fight junkies. Testosterone (T) is the naturally occurring male hormone produced primarily in the testes. Epitestosterone (E) is an inactive form of testosterone that may serve as a storage substance or precursor that gets converted to active T.

Junior Dos Santos’ Camp Posts Statement On Alistair Overeem’s Failed Drug Test Prior To UFC 146 Bout

Junior dos Santos has kept quiet in regards to word that his opponent for the UFC heavyweight title, Alistair Overeem, has failed a pre-fight drug test for elevated levels of testosterone. Dos Santos and Overeem were set to meet in the main event of May’s UFC 146 card from Las Vegas, but if Overeem is unable to provide a positive test sample, he’ll likely not get licensed to fight on the card. In a statement posted on Twitter, dos Santos’ management team wrote, “The UFC has made no announcement regarding (dos Santos’) fight. We have no comment, this matter falls solely to (Nevada) Commission & UFC.” Rumors of a possible replacement for Overeem have been floating around since news of the test was released on Wednesday. Frank Mir is a likely candidate, as he has a planned No. 1 contender bout with Cain Velasquez set for the same night. Dos Santos won the title from Velasquez, so there is always a chance he is given a rematch, as well.

Alistair Overeem has yet to respond to NSAC following failed drug test

Speak now or forever hold your peace. It's been a rough couple of months for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight number one contender Alistair Overeem, who was sued by his former management team, charged for bitch-slapping a casino patron and popped for elevated testosterone levels. The lone bright spot for the embattled Dutch striker was his technical knockout victory at UFC 141 last December, one that sent former division champion Brock Lesnar into retirement back to the WWE. His latest transgression, which came on the heels of a surprise drug test administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) -- and targeted a handful of competitors expected to compete at the UFC 146 pay-per-view (PPV) event on May 26 in Las Vegas -- flunked him for elevated levels of testosterone. But there's still hope, as NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer explains to MMA Fighting, but Overeem must first respond to the commission's findings in order to go to "Plan B." "Like with any drug test, if the B-sample comes back negative, then that trumps the A-sample, and he'd be eligible for licensure immediately. But if it comes back positive, or if he doesn't ask for it to be tested, that's something that can be used for grounds for denial. But that will be up to the commissioners." It's been said that "no news is good news," but that doesn't apply here. Until "Demolition Man" responds to the NSAC, his UFC 146 title fight against Junior dos Santos is on hold. That means UFC President Dana White and promotion matchmaker Joe Silva must now scramble to find a replacement should the worst-case scenario unfold. Most of the usual suspects are getting their names thrown into the hat, including Frank Mir, who already competes on the "Sin City" card this May, as well as Fabricio Werdum and Shane Carwin. One writer (with a long history of head trauma) has suggested a surprise addition of famed Russian "Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko. Until "The Reem" comes forward and asks to see his "B" sample, all we can do is speculate, but time is not on his side, as the UFC 146 card is just around the corner. Tick...tick...tick...

Overeem-JDS fight in jeopardy after Overeem drug test

Heavy MMA reports that Alistair Overeem has tested positive for increased levels of testosterone.  The test was taken after a press conference to hype Overeem’s title shot against JDS Memorial Day weekend. Several fighters were tested March 27th with Overeem being the only positive test.  The test puts Overeem’s fight May 26th against Junior dos Santos all but off as he’d have to appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission to obtain a license.  The positive drug test has angered Dana White and we will now see what Overeem and the UFC do to fix this situation. Payout Perspective: The pre-fight drug tests were a surprise to the fighters and the positive result really jeopardizes the main event. Suffice it to say, it will be interesting to see what Overeem will do.  Will he appear before the commission to offer some reasoning behind the test?  He also has the option of taking a second test.  If the second test comes back negative, then he’d have a better chance of receiving a license although it would not explain the first test.  From another side, it would be interesting to see what the UFC will do.  White was not happy about Overeem testing positive and it hurts what was to be a huge PPV.  The positive test may also force White’s hand with what to do with Overeem. He was in recent legal trouble and now testing positive on a drug test may put Overeem’s time with Zuffa on thin ice.  Also, what should the UFC do, if anything, to stress to its fighters about testing positive for drug tests.

Overeem Busted For Elevated Testosterone Levels

Wwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll. Something sure got real all of a sudden. And it hit the fan, too. And a bunch of other mixed metaphors. You may recall a few weeks ago at the press conference for UFC 146, the Nevada State Athletic Commission did a random drug test of the six fighters that showed up, Reem, Junior Dos Santos, Roy Nelson, Antonio Silva, Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir. Well, our breaking news on this otherwise slow Wednesday is that the guy most of us all kind of thought was taking stuff (cough, horse meat, cough) actually was. In about the least surprising positive test since "Cyborg" Cristiane Santos, Alistair Overeem has popped hot. To quote ESPN's Brett Okamoto: Overeem's levels were > 10:1. NSAC limit is 6:1. The fallout from this is enormous. Not only will 'Reem most likely not get licensed for his title bout with JDS at 146, his win over Brock Lesnar might get overturned and there's a really good chance he gets suspended, cut, and EVERYTHING THAT IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD IS OVEREEM'S FAULT. Alright, maybe not the last bit. Everything else is on the table, though. More updates as this story continues. There's a press conference coming up very shortly, so stay tuned.

Nick Diaz returns to active competition with Brazilian jiu-jitsu superfight on May 12

Nick Diaz may be on the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) sidelines awaiting punishment for his failed drug test following his UFC 143 loss to Carlos Condit but that doesn't mean he has to sit out altogether. No, the Stockton slugger and noted Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner will keep himself busy by competing in a superfight at the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo (WJJE) on May 12, 2012, in Long Beach, California. That's according to MMAFighting.com, who got word from both the WJJE and Cesar Gracie, Diaz's trainer and manager. No opponent has been named. But until he can come back to the Octagon where he belongs, why not stay sharp in jiu-jitsu competition? ‘King Mo’ Lawal Issues Apology To NSAC Official Pat Lundvall

It’s been a crazy past few weeks for former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal. First, Lawal has been battling a deadly staph infection that nearly cost him his life. After that, Lawal was forced to go in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission and plea his case for a positive drug test. Well, as you all know by now, that didn’t go in Lawal’s favor. Along with being fined and suspended, his actions after the ruling led to his release from Strikeforce. Lawal took to social media and ripped the NSAC, specifically Pat Sundvall, who “King Mo” felt made some disparaging remarks against him during the hearing. Recently, Lawal gave a formal apology in an interview with CSN Bay Area. The thing is, when it comes down to it, I’m gonna be real; I was out of line for calling the woman the b-word. I was wrong for that. I was kinda mad by the comments, I was offended by the comments made towards me, and I was outta line. I was too emotional. But, you know, I apologize for that. With that being said, I still feel that I was offended, but I’m in the wrong for what I said. The comments that upset Lawal came courtesy of Sundvall, who asked if he could read and understand the English language. It remains to be seen if the UFC, Strikeforce and Zuffa will allow Lawal back, as maybe they just want to let things settle. Lawal is out for nine months regardless due to the suspension, so there is plenty of time before anything official needs to happen. Photo credit: Esther Linn/All Elbows

NSAC Surprises UFC 146 Heavyweights With On-Site Drug Test

The six fighters who showed up to help promote UFC 146 on Tuesday were surprised by the Nevada State Athletic Commission with an on-site drug test. News of the testing was first reported by Ron Kruck of “Inside MMA.” Heavyweights Junior dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, Cain Velasquez, Frank Mir, Antonio Silva and Roy Nelson were also given tests by NSAC executive director Keith Kizer following the press conference. Kizer explained the decision to MMA Fighting’s Mike Chiappetta. We brought the drug test to them instead of making them go to the drug test. If they were not in Las Vegas, I would need to find them a lab, which is of course, much more of a hassle. This was the first time NSAC has performed such a test in MMA, though they did do the same thing to boxers Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko last August. UFC 146 is set for May 26. Kizer added that the results may not become available to the public before that date. However, if someone tested positive, that likely would become public knowledge.

Alistair Overeem and other select UFC 146 fighters undergo surprise drug test post press conference

The Heavyweight fighters who participated at today's (March 27, 2012) UFC 146 press conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, got a little bit more than they bargained for at the conclusion of the promotional festivities. According to MMA Fighting, Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) director, Keith Kizer, administered a random drug test on all fighters in attendance, which included Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, Cain Velasquez, Frank Mir, Roy Nelson and Antonio Silva. "We brought the drug test to them instead of making them go to the drug test. If they were not in Las Vegas, I would need to find them a lab, which is of course, much more of a hassle." Random indeed. The report also states that the results may not be made available until well after UFC 146, which is set to go down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 26, 2012. However, in the unfortunate case that results come back positive for any competitor, it could change the landscape of the first-ever UFC heavyweight pay-per-view (PPV) main card. Oddly enough, one of the headliners, Overeem, was the centerpiece of a drug test fiasco prior to UFC 141 in which he was given a conditional license to fight, but had to follow strict guidelines handed down by the NSAC. Ultimately, "The Reem" passed all testing and went on to defeat Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 late last year via technical knockout and send him into mixed martial arts (MMA) retirement. "Bigfoot," meanwhile, was popped for using steroids back in 2008, a finding that he vehemently denied. No excuses this time, which is perhaps the true reason for the sneak attack. As always, keep it tuned to MMAmania.com as more details become available. For a complete recap of the UFC 146 fight press conference click here. NSAC suspends Strikeforce light heavyweight Mo Lawal for nine months

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has ruled on the case of Muhammed Lawal, suspending the Strikeforce light heavyweight for nine months in addition to wiping a win off his record and fining him nearly $40,000. The punishment was a result of Lawal testing positive for steroid use after a January fight against Lorenz Larkin. While many fighters would deny the possibility of a banned substance being in their system, Lawal was very upfront about the cause of his hit, saying it stemmed from an over-the-counter supplement he’d purchased that has since been associated with Drostanolone. However, in the eyes of the NSAC his transparency apparently meant very little. Lawal Details Source of Positive Drug Test In terms of specifics, “King Mo” was forced to pay back his $15,000 win bonus (as the strike-based stoppage was changed to a No Contest based on the infraction) as well as 30% of his $80,000 purse for showing. His suspension is retroactive to January meaning he will be eligible to reapply for a license in September though it is unlikely Lawal will be ready to fight by then based on his ongoing recovery from a life-threatening bout of staph infection. Lawal holds an 8-1 overall record with impressive wins over Roger Gracie and Gegard Mousasi. Unfortunately he has been plagued with health issues, specifically regarding his knees, and has only fought three times since January 2010. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC Tweet

UFC 146 Combatants Face Surprise Drug Tests Following Press Conference

The Nevada state athletic commission took advantage of a Tuesday pre-fight press conference held within state lines, electing to order surprise drug tests for all six fighters who appeared at the UFC 146 event. The testing was done following its conclusion, NSAC executive director Keith Kizer told MMA Fighting, confirming a tweet by Ron Kruck of "Inside MMA." Kizer said it was the first time the commission had screened multiple participants of a mixed martial arts event during a press conference so far ahead of time, though they had done the same in July for a championship boxing match scheduled to take place in August between Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko. "We brought the drug test to them instead of making them go to the drug test," Kizer said. "If they were not in Las Vegas, I would need to find them a lab, which is of course, much more of a hassle." The six fighters tested were UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos, challenger Alistair Overeem, former champs Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir, and Roy Nelson and Antonio Silva. The test counts as one of the two random draws Overeem must submit himself to after a hearing with the commission last December. That meeting was necessary after Overeem took six days to submit to a requested drug test while moving from Nevada to Holland, and Overeem agreed to the stipulation in order to go forward with his fight against Brock Lesnar, which he won via first-round TKO. NSAC has long had the ability to test fighters out of competition, but only recently gained extra funding to implement it after a bill was signed into law by Gov. Brian Sandoval to increase its revenue. According to Kizer, the commission currently has a deal in place with Quest Diagnostics which allows the lab to send testers to obtain samples. After the conclusion of the UFC 146 press conference, the fighters were taken in groups of two to a VIP lounge to submit their sample. Kizer could not say when the results would be made available, saying they may not be publicly released until after the event's May 26 completion. Of course, that would likely change if any of the tests came back positive and put one of the night's big fights into jeopardy.

King Mo Lawal Suspended for 9 Months, Along with Fine and January Win Overturned to a No-Contest

Months after news broke that Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal failed a post-fight drug test after his win against Lorenz Larkin at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine in January, the Nevada Athletic Commission has now made its ruling on the matter, with Lawal being suspended for 9 months, along with a $39,000 fine, and his win over Larkin being overturned to a no-contest. Lawal (now 8-1-1NC) tested positive for the steroid Drostanolone, which is commonly used by bodybuilders for cutting weight. Lawal denied knowingly taking the drug, stating that a nutritional supplement he took, S-Mass Lean Gainer by Rock Solid, must have contained the drug. Lawal stated that he used the supplement nearly a year prior to the failed test, specifically in April of 2010. Even though he denies knowingly taking the drug, Lawal made it clear he understood if he were to be punished, stating “Whatever punishment you all took for me, I’m a man, and I’ll take it like a man”. That punishment is similar to other suspensions and fines handed out by the commission in the past. The $39,000 fine comes as a result of Lawal’s $15,000 win bonus being revoked, along with 30% of his fight purse, which was $24,000. After Lawal’s suspension ends in September, he can then submit a drug test to the athletic commission to re-apply for a fighter’s license. That drug test will be mandatory prior to fighting again in Nevada if he is to ever compete in the state again. Stay tuned to MMAFrenzy.com for news regarding the development of Lawal’s suspension.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission today voted unanimously to suspend and fine former Strikeforce champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal for a failed drug test following his appearance at "Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine." Lawal was suspended nine months from the date of the fight, fined 30 percent of an $80,000 "show" purse, and he must surrender his $15,000 win bonus. Cesar Gracie Claims Nick Diaz Will Eventually Return To MMA

Trainer Cesar Gracie has a pretty good insight into the workings of Nick Diaz. Gracie has helped mold the mind and body of Diaz for several years at his gym in Stockton, California. Following his most recent fight – a loss to Carlos Condit – Diaz told those listening that he was finished with fighting, effectively announcing his retirement from the sport. Many thought it was just Diaz being Diaz, but so far, he has stayed true to his word. Of course, his positive drug test for marijuana following the fight might also have something to do with that. Well, Gracie is coming out in defense of Diaz and declaring that he feels like his fighter will return, as he told Sherdog.com in a recent interview. He’s sick of politics, the whole marijuana thing, the judges….it’s kind of a weird thing, but let’s face it, I’m not going to let that guy quit. I just don’t see it happening. He’s too good and he’s too important in this sport, I think. If it’s up to me, there’s no way that’s going to happen. The loss to Condit really bothered Diaz, as was evident by the post-fight interview and video released of Diaz after. The idea that he would never compete again in MMA seemed strange, but Diaz has hinted at a boxing career previously, so there is always that option, as well. Photo credit: Tracy Lee/Yahoo! Sports

UFC Quick Quote: Cesar Gracie is not going to let Nick Diaz quit MMA

"He's sick of the politics, the whole marijuana thing, the judges ... . It's kind of a weird thing, but let's face it: I'm not going to let that guy quit. I just don't see that happening. He's too good and he's too important in this sport, I think. If it's up to me, there's no way that's going to happen." -- Nick Diaz's mixed martial arts (MMA) trainer, coach, and mentor, Cesar Gracie, tells Sherdog.com that he knows his star pupil won't be retiring from the sport if only because he just won't let him. Diaz famously declared he was walking away from the fight game following a close unanimous decision defeat to Carlos Condit at UFC 143 this past Feb. 4, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada. In that fight, the Stockton, Calif., native was the aggressor, walking down his foe for five full rounds. But "The Natural Born Killer" was precise in his strikes while circling away from danger and by the end of the 25-minute contest, the judges decided they felt aggressiveness was secondary to the damage done by a smart game plan. This, of course, angered Diaz to the point of quitting during the post-fight interview. It was later revealed it would have all been for naught anyway, as he failed his drug test for marijuana metabolites. He's yet to have his hearing but he's facing a long suspension, seeing as this is the second time he's been popped for drugs in Nevada. Even if he does take an extended vacation, Gracie assures us Diaz won't be gone for good. And, really, the former Strikeforce champion has far too much to offer the sport to walk away at the age of 28 and in the prime of his career. Right?

Chris Leben Calls Positive Drug Test 'Best Thing to Ever Happen to Me'

Speaking publicly for the first time since the UFC suspended him for testing positive for painkillers at UFC 138, Chris Leben said that the suspension forced him into rehab and forced him to turn his life around. "I've battled drugs and alcohol," Leben said on The MMA Hour. "I've battled with those for my entire life. I've had an issue with being addicted to painkillers for years now. I had some issues with my camp and it was almost a cry for help. I knew I was going to get caught and I just didn't care at the time. I'm extremely embarrassed, I feel like I let down the UFC, but at the same time I think getting caught is probably the best thing to ever happen to me. The UFC has been unbelievable, they sent me to a rehab facility and they really took care of me." Leben said he knew he had the oxycodone and oxymorphone pills with him at the UFC event in England knowing he would be drug tested, and that while he hoped he could force himself off the pills just long enough to get through the fight and start taking them again afterward, as the fight approached he just couldn't stop. "My wife had brought them to me for after the fight, and I had tapered off them for the fight, but there were some issues, a lot of stress, and I cracked," Leben said. "It was as simple as that. I knew they were there and I cracked. I couldn't hold out." That was five months ago, and when the positive drug test came back the UFC suspended him for a year. Leben said that he's taking that year to get his life back on track, and that he hasn't taken a pain pill since he went to rehab. However, he did admit to "a slip" in which he "had a drink -- more than one." Since then Leben has been taking Antabuse, which will make him sick if he has a drink. Leben said that slip, however, is not a fall. "Right now life is actually going well for me -- it's going great, considering," Leben said. "Life's going really good, better than it has in a long, long time." If Leben can keep his life moving in the right direction, he says, "I hope to God" he'll be back in the Octagon late this year.

Live Video: California State Athletic Commission Review Josh Barnett's Licensing Issues

<other/> Live video from your Android device on Ustream The California State Athletic Commission is meeting today at 11:30 a.m. PT to review the licensing situation of Strikeforce heavyweight Josh Barnett. Barnett has not been licensed in California since failing a drug test in 2009. It was Barnett's third failure of a drug test for steroids and forced the cancellation of his planned bout with Fedor Emelianenko. The live video feed is above. Barnett applied to be licensed again after a year had passed since his test failure but was declined due to a series of miscues including missed meetings and showing up without his attorney and refusing to answer questions. Barnett is scheduled to fight Daniel Cormier in the finals of Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix. That fight is expected to take place on May 5th, hopefully in California. Barnett and Cormier are the last fighters standing from a tournament field that included Alistair Overeem, Fedor Emelianenko, Andrei Arlovski, Antonio Silva and Sergei Kharitonov.

Nick Diaz Temporarily Suspended By Nevada Athletic Commission

Following a failed drug test after UFC 143 on February 4th, Nick Diaz has been temporarily suspended by Nevada Athletic Commission. The suspension was issued on Wednesday, and will be in place until a follow-up meeting takes place, which is where the long-term future of Diaz will be decided. That meeting is expected to take place in April. The commission will look over all information related to Diaz’s drug test for UFC 143, along with a failed drug test from February 2007, after Diaz’s fight with Takanori Gomi at Pride 33, which also took place in Nevada. Diaz was suspended for six months following the failed drug test, and his submission victory over Gomi was overturned and ruled a no contest. Because of his previous suspension by the same commission, it is likely that a second suspension will be more severe. A one year suspension is expected, along with possibly facing a fine. The commission requested information concerning Diaz’s full fight purse from UFC 143, in which he earned $200,000 for the fight, per his contract. Additional bonuses that Diaz received will also be looked at by the commission. Since Diaz is licensed for medical marijuana in the state of California, the commission will also look over the defense by Diaz that he is legally allowed to use the Nevada prohibited drug.

Fighters sound off on the enigma that is Nick Diaz

Nick Diaz, as far as the public knows, is retired from MMA. Following his loss to Carlos Condit for the interim UFC welterweight title, Diaz announced his retirement after bitter disappointment in the way the judges scored the fight. In the days following he was named as failing a drug test from the Nevada State Athletic Commission due to traces of marijuana metabolites in his system. As a result few outside of Diaz’s inner-circle have any real idea on what the enigmatic scrapper will do next. On a recent edition of SportsNet’s UFC Central, several fighters were asked to give their opinion on Diaz. Among those interviewed include Georges St-Pierre, who has been itching at the opportunity to face Diaz after the Stockton-native went off on GSP over the last year, Roy Nelson, frequent training partner Ronda Rousey, Condit, and Josh Koscheck. “He’s just a different breed,” said Koscheck on the subject. “He’s got a chip on his shoulder. I respect that. I think that he comes to fight. The guy just likes to fight and that’s pretty good, I like that.” Hear what the others have to say about Diaz in the video below: PHOTO CREDIT – UFC

Nick Diaz drug test failure makes its way to the Times Square Ticker in New York

This is what it means to be (kind of) mainstream, y'all. The folks at MiddleEasy.com snapped the above photo of the Times Square Ticker in New York announcing the fact that Nick Diaz failed his drug test for his main event fight against Carlos Condit at UFC 143 this past Sat., Feb. 4, 2012, in Las Vegas. And, as noted by Middle Easy, the ticker ran with no real context. It simply said Diaz tested positive for marijuana. That's it. Nothing about Condit or UFC 143 or the fight itself. Just the message you see above. That's big timing it. Unfortunately, it's more bad press for MMA in New York at a time when that's the last thing it needs. Nonetheless, there it is, in all its glory. Or shame. Whatever. For more on Diaz failing his drug test and all the fallout click here, here and here.

UFC 143 drug test results return with one positive for 'Diaz vs Condit' event

Uh-oh. With all the controversy surrounding the UFC 143: "Diaz vs. Condit" event, and most of it swirling around the Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit headlining bout, this just puts the cherry on top. Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer sent out an e-mail today confirming that one fighter who competed on the card returned a positive result on their drug test: Thank you for the many email and phone calls. I am still waiting for all the steroid and drug test results to come back. We did have at least one positive test. I will send out an email later today on that matter. Naturally, assumptions are going to be made and at this point, it's difficult to refute them. The Diaz camp had been lobbying for a rematch with Condit and apparently got their way, as UFC President Dana White all but confirmed the two were going to be set up for another date later this year. Then, suddenly, everything changed course and Cesar Gracie, head of the Diaz band of rebels, changed his tune. Seemingly out of nowhere, Gracie told multiple media outlets that the rematch would NOT be happening. He refused to go into specifics, though, and left us all to wonder just what the heck is going on. But then Josh Gross straight out asked Gracie about the rumor floating around that Diaz had failed his drug test and his response was rather interesting, to say the least: I asked Cesar Gracie yesterday re: rumor about an issue w/ Nick Diaz's drug test. His answer: "I have been told not to comment on anything." And the plot thickens. To be clear, we cannot confirm at this time that Diaz failed his drug test, even if all signs are pointing in that direction. Kizer noted that he will notify everyone once all results are in and then -- and only then -- can speculation be laid to rest. In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts on all this madness, Maniacs.

Strikeforce's 'King Mo' maintains innocence, looks for cause of failed drug test

In hopes of finding the cause of a positive test for an anabolic steroid, Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal's manager, Mike Kogan, today sent to the Nevada attorney general's office a full list of the supplements and medications the fighter took. After reviewing the list, the attorney general may ask Lawal to appear before the NSAC in March. UFC announces pre-contract drug testing for performance enhancing drugs

This is certainly interesting timing. On the heels of Strikeforce light heavyweight Muhammed Lawa failing a drug test for anabolic steroids for his Jan. 7 bout against Lorenz Larkin, the UFC has issued a press release today announcing a new policy effective immediately that dictates pre-contract drug testing for all newcomers to Zuffa promotions. From the release: Continuing a commitment to the health and safety of its athletes, the Ultimate Fighting Championship® announced today that all potential UFC® and STRIKEFORCE® signees will be subject to a mandatory pre-contract screening for performance-enhancing drugs. Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, all incoming athletes will be tested prior to finalizing a contract with the world's premier mixed martial arts organization. UFC and STRIKEFORCE already work closely with the most prestigious regulators and athletic commissions to ensure the healthy and safety of athletes prior to competition. This includes contestants on The Ultimate Fighter®, all of whom are pre-screened for performance-enhancing drugs prior to participating on the longest-running sports reality show on television. All current UFC and STRIKEFORCE athletes will continue to be screened for performance-enhancing drugs, both prior to competition and at random, in accordance with athletic commission rules and regulations. This is, of course, a necessary step for the world's largest fight promotion and frankly, something it should have been doing all along. Then again, it's fair to question to what point and purpose there is to giving away the fact that if the UFC comes calling with a contract offer, a drug test is coming right alongside it. After all, only a truly random drug test is going to turn up offenders. With Lawal and Cristiane Santos, two prominent Strikeforce fighters, both having failed drug tests within the span of a month, the need to do something about steroid use in MMA is obvious. The UFC will undoubtedly garner some solid PR with this press release but will it truly help weed out those who are looking to gain a competitive edge? Maniacs, what's your take on the matter?

Muhammed Lawal popped for PED use

With Strikeforce still reeling from the steroid-based suspension of ferocious featherweight champion Cristiane Santos it looks like the organization is not out of the woods yet, as the NSAC has confirmed former light heavyweight title-holder Muhammed Lawal tested positive for PED use as well and will probably be sidelined for the rest of 2012 as a result. According to a statement from NSAC chief executive Keith Kizer, an anabolic steroid called Drostanolone was found in Lawal’s system. While no official sentence has been issued yet, and “King Mo” reserves the right to appeal, it is likely he will be suspended for 9-12 months, fined up to 50% of his purse, and have his win over Lorenz Larkin changed to a “No Contest”. Lawal Doesn’t Care About Popularity, Only Pay Lawal’s performance against Larkin at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine could very well be his final appearance under the organization’s banner based on the positive drug test, as he is not only a free agent in February but the company is limping towards 2013 when its deal with broadcaster Showtime runs out. The outspoken 32-year old Lawal has not commented on the commission’s findings. No word has surfaced from Zuffa executives either, though it’s likely all will have something to say as the story continues to develop. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC Tweet

With or without Cyborg: Scott Coker on future of Strikeforce women's 145-pound division

If you're a mixed martial arts (MMA) fan and haven't been living under a rock, you've surely heard the news regarding the failed drug test by Strikeforce women's 145-pound champion "Cyborg" Cristiane Santos. After years of looking of looking invincible while mowing down her opposition, a fairly major hit was taken by the former champion when it was revealed that she had tested positive for steroids. According to Santos, she was taking some kind of dietary supplement and was unaware of any illegal substances therein. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker joined the guys at "Inside MMA" (via telephone interview) this evening to react to all of the events of the past few days. Hear what he had to say after the jump: "She's (Santos is) gonna be stripped of her belt and her title. And, you know we're gonna let the California State Athletic Commission do their due process. But you know, like, when little situations like that happen, when fighters were caught using steroids, they're (usually) gonna be out for a year. In that time, we're gonna be looking for another 145-pound title holder, and I think we're gonna move on. If she's out for a year, it might mean she's out for a year and four months. It might mean she's out for a year and six months before she can come back and fight. She will lose her belt. It's a penalty you pay and she's gotta be held accountable. I think she feels bad about what happened, and most likely, the situation that she's saying, she took the supplements and she didn't know she was taking (steroids), but at this point, you have to look at what the California State or Nevada State Athletic Commission says is not legal and a fighter has to abide by those rules and regulations like everybody else." Coker was asked by "Inside MMA's" Bas Rutten about whether or not he felt the penalty for a failed drug test was stiff enough. Though he didn't directly answer the question, he voiced his opinion that fighters who do get busted for steroids certainly are punished for their misdeeds. "If it's the first time and you didn't know, well, it's a one-year penalty. Not fighting for a year. You guys know: That means a lot of money in the MMA world. 'Cyborg' is gonna be without pay for a year. By the time she comes back, it could be a year and six months before she can fight again. That's gonna cost her a lot of money. Who knows, in endorsements, what that might cost the athlete. I think a year is good, but maybe there should be a bigger fine. If you get caught again, I think the situation would be a ban for a while. I'm not sure what that ruling is, but I'm pretty sure it's hefty to get caught one more time. It's why I always encourage the fighters to stay off the supplements." One thing Coker did not equivocate on was the fact that Santos should have known better. While he feels bad for his former champion, he's puzzled as to how she could have made the mistake: "That's the way I understand it and they're very clear. I think you can even go on the website and you can look up every supplement and see what's illegal. I don't think you can even take caffeine, before your fight. They're very tricky about their rules and supplements and anything that's a stimulant. They consider ephedrine or anything that's a fat burner or weight loss product -- they consider that a stimulant." Directly after Santos' positive drug test, there was immediate speculation of a possible dissolution of the women's featherweight division. Coker went on record as saying that he disagrees with this move and that he believes the division can successfully go on without her: "You know what? We're gonna talk to Sean (Shelby) and the guys and talk this whole thing over. This all happened so quickly over the weekend. We were focused on our event. I think by the end of the week, we'll probably have some gameplan of what we're gonna do. I do know there's some fighters at that weight class, at 145, that can compete at a very high level. Finding girls to compete at 145 from all over the world, that's not gonna be a problem. I think it's just gonna be a conversation with the guys from Vegas and just see what they wanna do." Should the Strikeforce 145-pound division keep on trucking without "Cyborg?" At this point, does it even matter to you? Opinions, please.

Ask the Fight Doc: What do you make of Cris Santos' failed drug test?

This past week, the California State Athletic Commission issued a one-year suspension and $2,500 fine to Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos for failing a Dec. 17 drug test. Santos is denying she knowingly took the banned substance stanozolol and blames it on a dietary supplement she used. In our latest "Ask the Fight Doc" segment, MMAjunkie.com medical columnist and consultant Dr. Johnny Benjamin examines the excuse and explains why the drug is a popular choice among female weight-restricted athletes.

Cristiane Santos accepts responsibility for failed drug test

Fallen featherweight Cristiane Santos has come forward to face allegations of steroid use and, as it turns out, express complete accountability for her actions. Last week Santos’ name came up in connection with a failed drug test attached to her December destruction of Hiroko Yamanaka at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal. As a result she was not only suspended by the CSAC for a year but fined $2,500, handed a “No Contest” instead of a win, and ultimately stripped of her Strikeforce belt. Strikeforce/UFC Bosses Comment on Santos’ Failed Drug Test “While I was preparing myself for my last fight I was having a difficult time cutting weight and used a dietary supplement that I was assured was safe and not prohibited from use in sports competition,” wrote Santos in a statement through MMAPrime. “It was never my intention to obtain an unfair advantage over Hiroko, mislead Strikeforce, the Commission or my fans. I train harder than any fighter in MMA and do not need drugs to win in the cage, and I have proven this time and time again! My only mistake is not verifying the diet aid with my doctor beforehand, and understanding that it was not approved for use in the ring.” “I am ultimately responsible for everything I put in my body, and at the end of the day, there is no excuse for having a prohibited substance in my system,” the disgraced fighter continued. “I do not condone the use of any performance enhancing drugs by myself or any other professional athlete, and willingly accept the penalties and fines that have been handed down to me by the California State Athletic Commission and those of the Strikeforce/Zuffa organization.” Santos closed by vowing to come back and prove it was a one-time error and not habitual use, saying, “I will do everything I can to show my fans that I can still compete at the professional level without the use of any prohibited substances, and ask God’s forgiveness for my mistake.” “Cyborg” holds an overall record of 10-1 with 8 TKOs. Due to the suspension she will now spend another year on the sidelines after already missing seventeen months prior to last month’s match-up with the break stemming from contractual issues and an overall lack of challengers for Santos’ featherweight belt. Could Santos' failed test actually save Strikeforce's women's 145-pound division?

LAS VEGAS - In MMA, especially with smaller promotions, an entire division can be propped up by a single dominant fighter. However, with Strikeforce's women's 145-pound division, could the loss of its champion and pound-for-pound queenpin actually save it? On Saturday Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos' yearlong suspension for a failed drug test could actually result in an influx of talent and perhaps event a brighter future for the division.

Cris Cyborg responds to her failed drug test, blames it on supplements

I find it hilarious that people feel the need to make the statement of 'Sure, I'll date Cyborg.' As if that option will ever be on the table for the rest of your life. If you were to combine every parallel universe that has ever existed since the beginning of time, at no point will Cris Cyborg choose to ditch her husband, Evangelista Cyborg in order to try her shots with you. Don't worry, folks. You will never be in a situation to decide if you would like to be with Cris Cyborg. Let the debate end. Cris Cyborg killed the protector of Asgard in the movie Thor. Just kidding, but it does not negate the fact she effectively killed the entire Strikeforce 145 lb female division with her recent drug test returning with banned substances. Now Cris has issued a response via Facebook regarding her failed drug test, and is now blaming it on supplements. I would like to sincerely apologize to StrikeForce, the Zuffa organization, Hioko Yamanaka and my fans for my failed drug test. I am ultimately responsible for everything I put in my body, and at the end of the day, there is no excuse for having a prohibited substance in my system. I do not condone the use of any performance enhancing drugs by myself or any other professional athlete, and willingly accept the penalties and fines that have been handed down to me by the California State Athletic Commission and those of the StrikeForce/Zuffa organization. While I was preparing myself for my last fight I was having a difficult time cutting weight and used a dietary supplement that I was assured was safe and not prohibited from use in sports competition. It was never my intention to obtain an unfair advantage over Hiroko, mislead StrikeForce, the Commission or my fans. I train harder than any fighter in MMA and do not need drugs to win in the cage, and I have proven this time and time again! My only mistake is not verifying the diet aid with my doctor beforehand, and understanding that it was not approved for use in the ring. Unfortunately in the end I suffer the consequences and must accept the responsibility for my actions. I will do everything I can to show my fans that I can still compete at the professional level without the use of any prohibited substances, and ask God's forgiveness for my mistake. Cris Cyborg Blames Dietary Supplement for Positive Steroid Test

Filed under: StrikeforceA day after the California State Athletic Commission announced that she failed a steroid test at her most recent fight, Cris Cyborg released a statement in which she blamed the positive test on a dietary supplement. Cyborg said through her web site that she does not use performance-enhancing drugs and that the only thing she did wrong was fail to properly inspect the ingredients in the supplement she took, which she did not identify by name. "While I was preparing myself for my last fight I was having a difficult time cutting weight and used a dietary supplement that I was assured was safe and not prohibited from use in sports competition," Cyborg said. "It was never my intention to obtain an unfair advantage over Hiroko, mislead StrikeForce, the Commission or my fans. I train harder than any fighter in MMA and do not need drugs to win in the cage, and I have proven this time and time again! My only mistake is not verifying the diet aid with my doctor beforehand, and understanding that it was not approved for use in the ring. Unfortunately in the end I suffer the consequences and must accept the responsibility for my actions." Cyborg is far from the first athlete to blame a positive drug test on a supplement, and she surely won't be the last. It's probably the most common reason given for positive tests. But the bottom line is that athletes have to know what they're taking or suffer the consequences, and Cyborg said she knows that. "I would like to sincerely apologize to StrikeForce, the Zuffa organization, Hiroko Yamanaka and my fans for my failed drug test," she said. "I am ultimately responsible for everything I put in my body, and at the end of the day, there is no excuse for having a prohibited substance in my system." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Alistair Overeem Passes First Drug Test For UFC 141

Overeem is ready to go!!! Lesnar vs Overeem is on!about 1 hour ago via Twitter for iPhoneReplyRetweetFavorite@danawhiteDana White Alistair Overeem vs. Brock Lesnar is one drug test closer to actually happening next week. Dana White hinted that Overeem passed the first urine test mandated by the NSAC last week in the tweet seen above. Bloody Elbow’s Brent Brookhouse confirmed it shortly thereafter. Overeem will still have to take another test when he arrives in the US for the fight next week, but it’s my understanding that it will be the same test he just took in the UK late last week. So unless he takes something between now and then, which is extremely unlikely considering he knows the test is coming, there shouldn’t be any reason why he won’t pass that one too.

Everyone relax, Overeem vs. Lesnar is STILL on, but under these conditions...

I think we all need to give a giant congratulatory dinner plate to LayzieTheSavage for smuggling his phone inside the Nevada State Athletic Commission courtroom and live streaming the entire process until his cellular device died. At the peak, I counted 2684 people simultaneously viewing his UStream of the NSAC hearing just before his phone battery went into the after life. So we learned that a few members of the NSAC panel were under the impression that Alistair Overeem's fight against Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 is his heavyweight debut. We also learned that if you tweet LayzieTheSavage while he's on his phone, you hear a disturbing buzzing noise, reminiscent of two robots climaxing while having intercourse. Most importantly, we discovered that Alistair Overeem has been granted a license to participate in UFC 141, but under a few nagging conditions. First, Alistair Overeem must submit a clean drug test within 72 hours of tonight and when he lands in the US for UFC 141. The previous drug test that Overeem submitted on December 7th must also come back sparkling clear. The NSAC also enforced two random drug test to be conducted within six months after UFC 141. Aside from forcing Overeem to urinate in a plastic cup multiple times in the next few days, everything seems to be on track for UFC 141. However, it's rumored that Frank Mir is patiently waiting to replace Overeem in case something happens between now and December 30th. The drama, you can cut it with a dull butter knife.

Dave Herman's latest drug test comes back clean, already has next UFC fight booked

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight Dave Herman may finally have some vindication in his failed pre-fight drug test fiasco for UFC 136. On Sept. 28, 2011, it was reported that officials from the The Texas State Athletic Commission had misplaced "Pee Wee's" initial drug test. Upon taking another test, the initial urine sample was found and tested positive for marijuana. Commission official tested the second test, which tested positive for steroids, forcing UFC officials to cancel his scheduled bout against Mike Russow that was scheduled for UFC 136 in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 8, 2011. Throughout the whole messy ordeal, Herman maintained his innocence and was adamant that he had ever taken any banned substance. Now, it seems that he may finally have cleared his name and the commission may have some explaining to do. According to a post on Facebook by his management team, Suckerpunch Entertainment, Herman took another test and the results all came back negative.Check it out: "He took the drug test again, and as expected, the result came back all negative! Therefore, his next fight is now confirmed! Yes I am talking about SP fighter Dave Herman!! Official from UFC: Ultimate Fighting Championship coming soon!!" Very good news indeed for Herman, but not so much for the Texas commission officials, whose double whammy boo-boo cost Herman a payday at UFC 136. According to his management, Herman already has a fight lined up, but no word was given as to who the heavyweight will face next. Herman was last seen in action at UFC 131 in a "Fight of the Night" performance against Jon Olav Einemo on June 11, 2011. The back-and-forth brawl ended in a second round technical knockout victory for Herman. "Pee Wee" got off to an impressive 15-0 start to his mixed martial arts (MMA) career and only has two losses to date courtesy of Choi Mu Bae and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. Herman holds victories over UFC and PRIDE legend Don Frye and Ron Waterman, among others. Now that "Pee Wee" has cleared his name and is back in the UFC's heavyweight mix, care to guess who will welcome back the Team Quest member?

Chris Leben receives yearlong suspension after failed drug test

Popular middleweight Chris Leben has failed his second drug test while serving as a member of the UFC roster and will be suspended from competition for a year based on the transgression. According to the UFC, Leben tested positive for opiates (Oxycodone/Oxymorphone) after his loss to Mark Munoz earlier this month in headlining action at UFC 138. “The Crippler” previously tested positive for PEDs (Stanozolol) in 2008 after a bout also held in England as was the match-up with Munoz. The UFC oversees drug testing when stopping in the U.K. due to the region’s lack of an athletic commission. Leben’s Emotional Reaction to UFC 138 Loss Caught in Video Blog “I like Chris and I want him to do well, but based on his actions, he’s been suspended for one year,” said Dana White in a public statement through the UFC’s website. “If he needs professional help, we are going to be there for him. We want to see him succeed not only in the Octagon but in his personal life.” Leben also spoke out, apologizing for letting his fans, friends, family, and employers down, adding, “I’m learning that I’m my own worst enemy sometimes. I can’t succeed in the Octagon or in life behaving this way. I’ve got to make some real changes over the next year and I’m going to focus on getting my life and career back on track. Again, I’m sorry to the UFC and fans that’ve supported me since my days on The Ultimate Fighter.” All twenty competitors taking to the cage on the November 5 event with Leben marking the card’s lone positive result. Chris Leben suspended one year after failing drug test following UFC 138 loss to Mark Munoz

Oops, he did it again. Chris Leben has been suspended for one year by the UFC for failing his drug test following his loss to Mark Munoz at UFC 138 this past Nov. 5, 2011, in Birmingham, England. Leben tested positive for Oxycodone and Oxymorphine, two subscription painkillers.  Here's what UFC President Dana White had to say about the personal demons that have plagued Leben throughout his mixed martial arts career: "I like Chris and I want him to do well, but based on his actions, he's been suspended for one year. If he needs professional help, we are going to be there for him. We want to see him succeed not only in the Octagon, but in his personal life." This is the second time Leben has failed a drug test, the first coming after his unanimous decision loss to Michael Bisping following UFC 89 back in Oct. 2008. That event, perhaps coincidentally, was also held in Birmingham, England. Included in the UFC report announcing the drug test failure is a statement from Leben himself, who takes responsibility for his actions and accepts the punishment handed down to him. "I would like to make it known that I fully accept this suspension and apologize for embarrassing the UFC, my friends and family, and sport of mixed martial arts. I'm learning that I'm my own worst enemy sometimes. I can't succeed in the Octagon or in life behaving this way. I've got to make some real changes over the next year and I'm going to focus on getting my life and career back on track. Again, I'm sorry to the UFC and fans that've supported me since my days on The Ultimate Fighter." Because there is no drug testing overseas due to a lack of sanctions from athletic commissions, the UFC typically takes the matter in its own hands, both in testing and any and all ensuing punishment. This being his second offense, the powers that be felt an entire year away from the sport was in order. In the days leading up to UFC 138, Leben had trouble cutting weight for the contest, reportedly dropping 21 pounds in just 24 hours in order to go ahead with the bout. He eventually lost via second round technical knockout following a doctor stoppage via cut. The 19 other fighters who competed on the card and were tested all passed with flying colors, according to the UFC.

Dave Herman yanked off UFC 136 due to failed drug test

What was originally thought to be a standard, injury-related withdrawal had a bit of intrigue thrown into the mix earlier today when Dave Herman revealed he had been pulled from a UFC 136 bout against Mike Russow after testing positive for marijuana use. However, “Pee Wee” also defended himself saying he doesn’t smoke weed and explained that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation had originally told him they’d lost his sample only for it to mysteriously reappear with traces of THC. “I went in to get my drug test and a week later they called and said they lost my urine specimen and I had to come in and redo it. That was last week and I went back in that day. Then today they said I failed. I’m like, uh, that’s impossible,” the 26-year old stated on ClinchGear Radio. “It’s disappointing,” he continued. “I’ve been training really hard, and I feel like I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in for a fight, but stuff happens. Maybe it’s for the best, (to) give me some more time to get even better and give an even better show in my next fight. No official word has surfaced from the UFC on how they plan to handle the situation. In the past similar incidents have been handled internally by Zuffa while respecting the standard six-month (or longer) suspension doled out by athletic commissions. Herman is 21-2 with twenty finishes including fifteen TKOs and five submissions. He is 1-0 in the UFC with a second stanza stoppage of Jon Olav Einemo at UFC 131. “Pee Wee” Herman Doesn’t Think BJJ Works in MMA UFC 136 takes place next weekend and features Frank Edgar defending his lightweight title against rival Gray Maynard as well as Jose Aldo putting his belt on the line against longtime UFC veteran Ken Florian. Dave Herman out of UFC 136 due to failed drug test

UFC heavyweight Dave Herman was pulled from UFC 136 earlier this week for undisclosed reasons. Herman has stated that the reason he was pulled from UFC 136 was due to a failed drug test. Dave Herman recently spoke about the incident with Clinch Gear Radio: “Basically, I failed my drug test. I went in to get in my drug test (on Sept. 15), and a week later, [they] called me and told me they lost my urine specimen. I had to come in and redo it. That was last week. I went back in that day. And [on Wednesday], they said I failed. I said, ‘That’s impossible.’” Herman, who has never failed a drug test, has apparently recieved conflicting information from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in regards to the tests. The Department apparently alleges they never lost the sample, stating that they just required two tests, one for drugs of abuse and one for PEDs. Which would be a standard procedure for pre-fight testing. Herman went on to say ”Texas said they never lost it and the first one [for] drugs and the second was for steroids, I don’t even smoke… I haven’t even had a beer in two month.” The UFC 136 main card bout between Herman and Mike Russow was scrapped and replaced by an anticipated rematch between Leonard Garcia and Nam Phan. UFC 136 takes place next weekend in Houston, Texas. The event is headlined by a pair of title fights with lightweight champion Frankie Edgar rematching Gray Maynard and featherweight champion Jose Aldo facing Kenny Florian. Failed Drug Test Forces Dave Herman Off UFC 136

Dave Herman was unexpectedly yanked from the UFC 136 card yesterday without explanation. Injuries are typically to blame for last-minute withdrawals, but as it turns out, that’s not the case here. Dave Herman went on Clinch Gear Radio and revealed that a failed drug test for marijuana forced him off the card, but completely denied any wrongdoing. He also claims that the Texas commission told him two different stories about losing one of his samples. It’s sorta confusing, but here’s the transcription via 5thRound: “Basically, I failed my drug test. It was September 15th, I went in and submitted the first test, and then a week later [the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation] emailed me and called me and said they lost the sample and said I had to go in and do it again. I went in again that day and then [yesterday] they got the results back and they said I failed. I said, ‘That’s impossible.’ “Texas [then] said that they never lost [the initial sample], and the first one was for drugs and the second one was for steroids. They didn’t say it was for performance-enhancing drugs, they said I had marijuana. And I don’t even smoke. I haven’t even had a beer in two months.” It’s unclear if Herman is going to appeal the results or what the Texas commission’s side of the story is, but we’ll keep you posted. As for UFC 136, the Nam Phan vs. Leonard Garcia rematch has been promoted to the main card to fill the void Dave Herman’s bout with Mike Russow left. It’s unclear if Russow will remain on the card. Dave Herman Says UFC 136 Removal Due to Failed Drug Test

Word came yesterday that the UFC 136 heavyweight fight between Dave Herman and Mike Russow had been pulled from the card. Now, Dave is saying that there is more to the story than a simple injury. Yesterday, Herman was on Clinch Gear Radio where he explained that he was removed from the card for a failed drug test. Here's a transcription of the relevant parts of the interview: I went in to give my drug test, right? And a week later they called me and said they lost my urine speciman and I had to come in and re-do it. That was last week. Like, I went back in that day and today they said I failed. And I said 'uh, that's impossible.' It was September 15, I went in and took the first test. And then a week later they e-mailed me and called me and said they lost the sample and I had to come in and do it again. So I went in to do it again that day and then today they just got the results I guess. But then I called because I've been trying to figure this out. I was like how did they lose it? What happened? I don't know. But then Texas said that they never lost it and said that they never lost it and the first test was for drugs and the second was steroids. ... They didn't say I had performance enhancing drugs, they said I had marijuana. And I don't even smoke, so yeah. Although I think the Diaz brothers do claim it is performance enhancing somehow. What is actually said here has been misreported several places. Many people have said that Herman tested positive for steroids, but he makes it clear that it was for marijuana, not any sort of PED. The confusion seems to stem from the line where Herman says that Texas told him test one was for drugs and test two for steroids, but listening to the interview makes it very clear that he is saying they were testing for different things with each test but that it was marijuana that he was popped for. I'm sure there will be more on this story over the coming days.

Dave Herman says marijuana and steroids are to blame for his pre-fight drug test fail

Dave 'PeeWee' Herman has been removed from the UFC 136 fight with Mike Russow due to what appears to be a failed drug test. In a recent statement on Clinch Gear Radio Herman claims that he failed the test thanks to Marijuana and steroids, but in an unexpected inducing statement he vehemently denies smoking the marijuana. I can visualize the shock and awe oozing out of all of your faces right now. "Basically, I failed my drug test. I went in to get in my drug test (on Sept. 15), and a week later, they called me and told me they lost my urine specimen. I had to come in and redo it. That was last week. I went back in that day. And [on Wednesday], they told me I failed. I said, 'That's impossible.' "Texas said they never lost it and the first one [tested positive] for drugs and the second was for steroids. I don't even smoke. I haven't even had a beer in two months." Look we all believe that Micheal Jackson was not doing Billie Jean and she was not his lover, so it might be possible for us to believe Dave Herman was not doing Mary Jane. Then again it's easy to question the sobriety of anyone willing to publicly wear a shirt like the one above, go by the nickname of PeeWee and endure the speculation as to what the meaning behind that nickname really is. The UFC still has not released an official statement as to the reason behind Herman's removal from the fight with Russow, nor have they announced a replacement for the October 8th fight. Dave Herman Out of UFC 136; Says Positive Marijuana Test to Blame, but Denies Use

Filed under: UFC, NewsA heavyweight tussle at UFC 136 next week has been scrapped from the main card, and a featherweight rematch has been bumped up to take its place. The UFC announced Wednesday that a bout between Dave "Pee Wee" Herman and Mike Russow is off because Herman had to withdraw, and Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan has moved up from the preliminary card to the pay-per-view slot. But later Wednesday, Herman told Clinch Gear Radio that it was a failed preliminary drug test that knocked him out of the bout, saying he tested positive for marijuana - but denying any use of the banned substance. Additionally, a source close to Russow's camp told MMA Fighting that marijuana was indeed the culprit. "I'm still trying to figure it out myself," Herman told hosts Jeff Dotseth and Stephen Quadros. "Basically, they said I failed my drug test. I went in to get my drug test. A week later, they called and said they lost my urine specimen and I had to come back in and redo it. And I came back in and they said I failed it. It's impossible." Herman (21-2, 1-0 UFC) denied any use of marijuana: "I don't even smoke. I haven't even had a beer in two months." Herman told the show the Texas State Athletic Commission initially said he failed a first test, then failed a second for steroids. He also said the commission asked him to take a second test because it lost his first sample. Herman won his UFC debut in June with a comeback win over Jon Olav Einemo that won Fight of the Night honors. The Indiana native has been training with Team Quest. Herman started his MMA career 15-0 with 15 stoppages - 14 in the first round, including a 3-0 stint in EliteXC. Russow (14-1, 1 NC, 3-0 UFC) beat Jon Madsen in March after a long injury layoff. A source close to Russow's camp told MMA Fighting the heavyweight does not yet have another fight booked. Garcia and Phan's rematch moves from the prelims up to the pay-per-view. The two fought at the TUF 12 Finale last December with Garcia winning a controversial split decision and Fight of the Night honors. Garcia was unsuccessful in March in another rematch from a controversial split decision win when he was submitted by Chan Sung Jung. Phan is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Mike Brown at UFC 133 in August. UFC 136 takes place Oct. 8 at the Toyota Center in Houston. It will be the promotion's first trip to Houston since UFC 69. The show, which will be preceded by a UFC Fan Expo on Oct. 7-8, features a pair of title fights - the rematch between lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, plus a featherweight title bout between champ Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian.  Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
