Jim Miller Says Ben Henderson Loss Forced Him to Take Personal Health Seriously

NEW YORK -- Ahead of his bout with Nate Diaz at UFC on Fox 3, lightweight contender Jim Miller spoke to the media at today's open workouts. The AMA trained-fighter discussed dealing with media responsibilities, his dislike of the weight cut but love of the 'process', why the loss to Ben Henderson told him he needed to train smarter, if moving on from that loss was hard to do and why improving cardio is the most important priority ahead of Saturday night.

Despite UFC 149 Rumors, Jon Jones' Return Unlikely Until August or September

In the immediate aftermath of Jon Jones' recent win over Rashad Evans, we quickly learned that his next title defense would come against decorated veteran Dan Henderson. While no timetable was cemented for the bout, UFC president Dana White said that the upcoming UFC 149 event in Calgary could be a possibility. One week later, though, we can rule out the July 21 event. Jones' manager Malki Kawa told MMA Fighting on Monday that the UFC light-heavyweight champion would not be available for the show, which is scheduled exactly three months to the day after Jones' five-round unanimous decision win over Rashad Evans at UFC 145."He will not be fighting in July," Kawa said. "It's just probably a little too soon. There's been no timetable yet but July probably isn't going to happen."An August or September return is much more likely. Judging from the schedule, September seems like a more logical fit, since August's 11 UFC 150 card will probably host the lightweight title rematch between Ben Henderson and Frank Edgar. The UFC rarely puts two championship fights on one card.Meanwhile, a September 22 show has already been announced for Toronto's Air Canada Centre. That event has no announced or rumored fights.Jones has kept a busy schedule since the start of 2011 He's fought five top 10 contenders in the last 14 months, beating all of them, including four by stoppage.Kawa said that Jones intends to fight three times in 2012, but for now, the grinding schedule has understandably caused him to take a bit of a breather before preparing for Henderson, who may turn 42 before the fight takes place. His birthday is on August 24."Jon's going to take a little time to himself, and then he'll get back into it," Kawa said.

Clay Guida Vs. Gray Maynard Announced For UFC On FX 4

It looks like Gray Maynard will make his much-discussed return to the octagon on June 22nd in Atlantic City, and his opponent will be a tough, grinding wrestler like himself. And it will be a five-rounder. Here's what the UFC had to say: Two compelling matchups will get the Summer of 2012 off to a rousing start as the June 22nd UFC on FX event will see a five round lightweight main event battle between Clay Guida and Gray Maynard. Maynard is coming off a loss to Frankie Edgar at UFC 136 in the third bout between the two. The loss was the first of Maynard's career, and he has significantly changed up his training since then by going to Brazil and working with UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo in addition to joining American Kickboxing Academy. Guida is coming off a loss as well, dropping a tough decision to Ben Henderson at UFC on Fox in November. The bout will serve as the main event of the night. SBN coverage of UFC on FX 4

Jose Aldo vs Anthony Pettis? 'Showtime' considering a drop to featherweight

The last man to hold the World Extreme Championship (WEC) lightweight title, Anthony Pettis, wanted to prove that beating Ben Henderson to earn that distinction was not a fluke. In order to do that, he required a "Smooth" rematch against "Bendo," who took over the 155-pound throne under the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) banner by outpointing Frankie Edgar last month in Japan. "Showtime" held up his end of the bargain by cleaning the clock of Boston grappler Joe Lauzon, also at UFC 144, and put himself in prime position to make it two in a row against Henderson. Unfortunately nobody cleared it with Edgar. His "Answer" to UFC President Dana White, who urged the Jersey Shore native to drop a few pounds and challenge Jose Aldo for the featherweight crown in the promotion's desolate 145-pound division, was an emphatic "No." Edgar instead wanted a Henderson rematch based on the (mildly) controversial finish from their championship tilt at the Saitama Super Arena. Wish granted. That means Pettis will have to fend off another round of lightweight hopefuls to keep his spot in line. Or he can do what Edgar wouldn't, and shed some skin to give "Junior" the fits in a featherweight title fight. A move his manager tells Ariel Helwani (via UFC Tonight) is currently under consideration. "I spoke to Anthony's manager just a few hours ago and he told me that he was really disappointed, but he respects the decision. He would consider going down to 145 to fight Aldo. This is definitely something to monitor." Pettis (15-2) is currently 2-1 as a ZUFFA employee and already coughed up one lightweight title shot after getting mugged by Clay Guida in June 2011. Does he stick around and risk another possible loss to a decorated wrestler like Gray Maynard, or see what kind of impact he can make against Aldo? Thoughts?

Ben Henderson was submitted last weekend, is this real life?!

There was a time in the WEC days when Ben Henderson followed MiddleEasy on Twitter. He used to RT our stories, but for some reason we never followed him back. Perhaps it was the influx of Christian-centric tweets which emerged from his timeline that got us in the end. If we wanted to be inundated with religious tweets, we would have just followed @Scientology on Twitter. Those guys have Tom Cruise and they believe in intergalactic aliens. If you're going to believe in any religion, you might as well go for the one with the most space ships. Now that Ben Henderson is the UFC lightweight champion, it would be entirely too bandwagonish if we started following him on Twitter now. So to maintain our integrity, we will pretend like Ben Henderson is still that guy in WEC with the long hair and continue to not follow him on Twitter. We still love the guy, but we're caught in a conundrum of 'keeping it real' in the Twitterverse. However, our decision will not stop us from publishing a newly acquired Ben Henderson video on MiddleEasy. Last weekend at the 7th Arizona Brazilian Jiu JItsu International Open, the UFC lightweight champion competed in the Brown Open Division and was submitted by Daniel Grippaudo -- marking the first time anyone in combat sports has ever successfully slapped a submission on Ben Henderson. Sorry Diaz/Miller, Frankie Edgar will get his rematch against Ben Henderson first

Props to the UFC for the impromptu continental breakfast at Radio City Music Hall this morning. Your bagels were delicious and your coffee erased any sign of me coming home at 3:00 am from the gym last night. Also, I apologize for my thumb bleeding on the tablecloth. I didn’t know it was going to start bleeding or I would have left my gloves on. My bad. If you guys want, I’ll totally lend you some OxiClean. It worked well on my carpet a few months ago when I accidentally tripped over my bicycle and spilled some cranberry juice. It was a big mess, but that OxiClean stuff worked like a charm. On a side note, Billy Mays was the greatest pitchman in the history of television. RIP Billy, I will forever appreciate you helping me make this tablecloth situation right again. Luckily I made it up the stairs to the press conference without any additional injuries or mishaps. As always, UFC holding a press conference or any media-based event in NYC draws a lot of attention. Today was no exception. NYC’s MMA fans were out in force to welcome the UFC on FOX 3 fighters to the Empire State; and we finally got answers to the question we’ve all been itching to find out. Despite Anthony Pettis’ amazing performance at UFC 144 in Japan, Dana White has confirmed that the Frankie Edgar will be given a rematch against Benson Henderson and the winner of Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller will fight for the next title shot. Bummer for Showtime Pettis, dude looks like he’ll have to wait until well after May/June for his shot at the belt. Upon receiving this news, somewhere on the West Coast, LayzieTheSavage has probably knocked some miscellaneous paraphernalia on his coffee table while jumping up and down in frustration; while the remainder of the UFC’s lightweight division hurt some part of their body hitting the closest stationary object in site. We’re happy the mystery is over and we’ll finally have a definitive champion (baring another controversial outcome) and new number one contender. The presser continued with Dana's enthusiasm for Ronda Rousey's performance at Strikeforce this past weekend, Josh Koscheck calling Johny Hendricks’s KO of Jon Fitch a 'lucky punch' and the usual entertaining fan questions. Oh, and Pat Barry said he loves pizza too much to cut down to light heavyweight. That's it. You guys are all filled in. Below are some additional photos from the presser for your amusement.

Ben Henderson's TUF 9 audition video tape: 'You're looking at the future lightweight champion of the UFC'

Here's a newsflash for all the keyboard warriors who yelled "I called it!" when Ben Henderson won the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight title by defeating former champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 144 back on Feb. 25 in Japan. No, no you didn't. You know who did call it? Ben Henderson. In fact, he went on record in the above audition tape to tell the ZUFFA brass that he was going to win The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 9, then go on to claim the promotion's 155-pound strap. They weren't convinced. He might have even won TUF 9 -- had the promotion felt he was a right fit for the former Spike TV reality show. Instead, he was passed over for the likes of Santino DeFranco, Jason Dent, Cameron Dollar and Richie Whitson. It should be noted that being rejected for TUF isn't always an indication of how the promotion perceives a fighter's talent. Edgar was also turned down in his quest to join the cast of season five. Still it's hard not to wonder how things would have unfolded with a "Smooth" run in the TUF house. Ben Henderson vs. Ross Pearson? Or Andre Winner? We'll never know. See how far "Bendo" has come by clicking here.

FightMetric Scores UFC 144 Main Event For Ben Henderson

Let me get this out of the way first. I thought Ben Henderson beat Frankie Edgar tonight. That said, it was a fairly close fight at points and some people did narrowly score it Edgar. It’s not the end all be all, but in close fights like this it’s always interesting to see what the stats say and according to FightMetric’s, the judges got it right. They scored it 49-46 for Henderson, giving him rounds 2-5. On the feet, Henderson outstruck Edgar in significant strikes (87-68), total strikes (100-81), head strikes (59-40) and body strikes (28-23). The only place Edgar got the best of Bendo was in leg kicks (18-13) and takedowns (5-1). Really though, the defining factor in this fight was the damage. Edgar hit Henderson plenty of times, but he hardly did any damage outside of the knockdown he scored in the fifth round. Bendo didn’t have a scratch on his face when the fight was over. Edgar, meanwhile, looked a lot like Rocky Balboa who had just been in a 15-round war except this wasn’t a movie and his opponent didn’t look worse than him. His left eye was swollen shut and his nose appeared to be broken. That upkick Bendo nailed him was pretty much the defining moment of the fight. Props to Edgar for fighting like a warrior after eating Henderson’s heel, but he never came close to hurting Henderson like Henderson hurt him at any point. Moving forward, it’s looking like Anthony Pettis’ crushing head kick KO victory earlier in the night has earned him the right to be Ben Henderson’s first challenger, which is pretty fitting if you’ve followed the pair since their epic fight at the final WEC event over a year ago. Dana White wouldn’t outright confirm that Pettis is a lock, but said he “thinks” Showtime will get the nod. Considering it was a close fight tonight though and one Edgar believes he won, many have suggested that Edgar should get an immediate rematch. After all, he did have to give BJ Penn and Gray Maynard immediate rematches. When asked if thought it was unfair that he probably wasn’t, Edgar said he didn’t want to take a shot away from anyone who deserves it, but yeah he did give those guys rematches. He’s too nice to make a big deal out of it, but it was pretty clear that it irritates him. Which fight do you think should be next? Henderson vs. Edgar 2? Or Henderson vs. Pettis 2?

UFC 144 Results: Dana White Says Anthony Pettis Will 'Likely' Get Next UFC Lightweight Title Shot

EX-WEC lightweights had a good night at UFC 144 in Japan, and it appears that the last WEC fight ever might be re-created in the UFC octagon. As we all know by now, Ben Henderson claimed the UFC lightweight title with a unanimous decision win over Frankie Edgar in the main event tonight. Anthony Pettis led off the card with a highlight-reel head kick knockout of Joe Lauzon, and made it clear that he thinks he deserves a title shot. And UFC president Dana White agreed with that when he spoke at the post-fight press conference: "I think he's gonna get it." The two met the first time at WEC 53, where Pettis claimed the win and the WEC lightweight title and made the term "Showtime Kick" popular. White did temper his enthusiasm somewhat by saying that he doesn't like making those kinds of decisions on fight night and "we'll see what happens", but it'd be hard to deny Pettis his shot at this point. Many would like to see the winner of UFC on Fox 3's main event, Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller, get a shot, but that fight is three months from now and this seems to make more sense. Dana has been known to change his mind on these things all the time, but as of tonight, it looks like Ben Henderson will be making his first UFC lightweight title defense against a familiar foe. UFC Undisputed 3 just came out in stores this week and while I'm seeing lots of glowing reviews on all the gamer sites I haven't seen a whole lot of gushing from the fan community. Despite the Rocky comparisons and "Fight of the Year" awards, Frankie Edgar isn't looking for a repeat performance in Japan. At least, not exactly. After staging an amazing comeback from a heavy first-round deficit in both his second and third encounters with Gray Maynard, Edgar says he'll be looking to get off to a strong start when he meets Ben Henderson at UFC 144.

It's pretty cool how Ben Henderson went from cleaning his gym to owning it

It has to be hard being so smooth. There Dethrone, I just gave you a new slogan to put on all of your consistently awesome Ben Henderson shirts. You can thank me whenever you want. According to this interview by MMAWeekly, before Ben Henderson was draped in some of the best designed shirts in MMA he was scraping by and paying his dues by cleaning toilets and working non stop for years. That sounds almost exactly like Zeus' life story, just in a completely different context. Damon Martin just sat down with Ben Henderson a few weeks before his title shot against Frankie Edgar in Japan and reflected on his past and how far he's come. “It’s a pretty big difference from five years ago cleaning out the toilets, taking out the garbage, and going on Starbucks runs for the owner and his wife. Pretty big difference, and I’m happy for it,”   “I was pretty blessed with my situation when I came out here to Arizona. The old owner whose name was Jason Beck, he asked John Crouch, who he was friends with from back in the old school Gracie Academy days, he knew John had some fighters in Denver and he asked if he and some of his fighters would like to move to Arizona and just train and fight full time. So early on in my career I was able to move out here to Arizona and just train full time,” “I was sponsored from The Lab. I got like a couple hundred dollars a month, just barely enough to survive, but I cleaned toilets, mopped mats, do all the odd ends sort of jobs. So I was able to train full time, so I’d train in the mornings, train in the afternoons, but in between I’d clean up, I’d teach the kids’ classes, clean up at night also.” “Going from that to gym owner to fighting for the title, it’s something I am very excited for. I can't think of a more clear FOTY candidate than Frankie/Bendo that's coming to us in the near future. February 25th can't come soon enough. [Source]

Nate Diaz vs Jim Miller odds for UFC on FOX 3: Who opened as the -250 favorite?

His brother, Nick, may be dominating headlines thanks to a positive drug test and looming suspension but Nate Diaz has a big fight coming up against Jim Miller in the main event of UFC on Fox 3 on May 5 in New Jersey. And he's the underdog. According to noted oddsmaker Nick Kalikas on his MMAOddsbreaker show, Diaz is the +190 dog to Miller, who opens as the -250 favorite for their lightweight bout that should serve as a number one contender match. Diaz has won his last two bouts since making his return to the 155-pound waters, besting both Takanori Gomi and the streaking Donald Cerrone. The latter victory put him in title contention and a win over Miller could very well push him over the top. It won't be easy, of course, considering the New Jersey native's track record. Though he recently dropped a hard-fought decision to Ben Henderson in a bout he was dealing with sickness for, Miller is still 8-1 in his last nine bouts, including a first round submission over Melvin Guillard just last month. Considering the platform, it being the third network televised event and these two occupying the headlining slot, the winner could have a title shot awaiting him on the other side. Stay tuned. In the meantime, let's hear your initial reactions to these early odds. Too high? Too low? Let's talk turkey in the comments section below.

Video: UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar gets 'Blindsided' by Akira Corassani

Get out of here, bro! Before Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar can defend his strap against Ben Henderson at UFC 144 in Saitama, Japan on Feb. 26, 2012, he fell victim to a hidden camera prank show called "Blindsided." The prank was master planned by former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) participant Akira Corassani, who made a habit of ticking off his housemates in the TUF house during filming of season 14, Team Bisping vs.Team Mayhem. The setup is simple: After a training session, Edgar comes out to the parking lot to see a tow truck trying to repo "The Answer's" wheels in the form of his beautiful BMW. Luckily for the brave actor, the calm, cool and collected Edgar, didn't seem to get too heated, but still a nice try on the part of his training partners.

Frankie Edgar latest victim to get "blindsided" by prank show

UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar may be virtually unbeatable inside the Octagon but it appears the 14-1-1 “Answer” does have a few weaknesses, one of which happens to be his brand new BMW. Unfortunately for Edgar, but fortunately for MMA fans, training partner, renowned prankster, and fellow UFC fighter Akira Corassani is well-aware of the 30-year old’s affection for his automobile and decided to exploit it while cameras caught the fallout. In this clip from Yahoo Sports’ Blindsided, a show making athletes the victims of various pranks, Edgar exits his gym only to find out his car is about to be towed. UFC cameras were also on the scene, presumably filming Edgar for a Countdown show related to his upcoming title-defense against Ben Henderson at UFC 144. Check Out a Preview for Edgar’s February 26 Fight in Japan Watch below as Edgar starts to flip out over the possibility of his car being hauled away and repossessed despite having made all of his payments: PHOTO CREDIT – UFC Tweet

Jim Miller vs Melvin Guillard fight video preview for UFC on FX 1

Jim Miller vs. Melvin Guillard is all set to headline UFC on FX 1 this Friday night (Jan. 20, 2012) from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Both men were battling it out for the number one lightweight contender position in 2011; however, setbacks late in the year to Ben Henderson and Joe Lauzon, respectively, momentarily delayed their ascent. Nonetheless, the "Young Assassin" feels that this fight will determine the next 155-pound title challenger, even though the winner of the showdown is still a win or two more away from earning that distinction. It's the classic wrestler vs. striker match up that doesn't scare Miller one bit: "I don't want to get hit by him, but I'm not afraid to get hit by him." Guillard counters: "I will do my best to take him out -- I'm going for the knockout." For more on UFC on FX 1: "Guillard vs Miller" be sure to hit up our event archive right here. Matt Hughes is a God lovin' bobcat blastin sumbitch, deal with it

It’s an established fact that in order to be a REAL MAN, it's totally necessary to kill animals and use their body parts as attractive clothing and decorations for our homes. Equally obvious to everyone is the fact that if we don’t eat the flesh of these same animals, we will break out in what appear to be sores, but are actually tiny vaginas, and painful transfusions of beef blood will be required. Therefore, we are forced for the sake of our own well being to kill animals. However, there is one caveat to this: We are only allowed to kill things that are ugly. Cute animals are worth more and are therefore entitled to live out their natural lives in a state of bliss, licking their own balls in front of adults and children alike whenever they so please. We are willing to spend millions to save ecologically useless polar bears even as we ask for another delicious slice of pig holocaust. The only reason why Ben Henderson and the rest of his Korean flock eat dogs is because they have no souls (and because they are so delicious, especially when Henderson both barbecues and fries them). So naturally, it enrages us when someone like that stupid redneck Matt Hughes kills a bobcat seemingly for his own amusement. I mean, how would he feel if we shot him? And when we complain about his callousness in destroying a life that could have ended up producing funny lolcat pictures or inspirational nature posters, stinky Matt Hughes calls us idiots: Boo-urns, Matt Hughes. Even though your tweet was retweeted over 100 times, those people are all smellyfaces. I hope that whatever shelf Dana White put you on is both uncomfortable and dusty.

Gilbert Melendez Says He has Done More Than Ben Henderson to Earn Title Shot

For all the talk of how "thrilled" Gilbert Melendez is to remain in Strikeforce, there are still plenty of moments where he indicates otherwise. Most recently in an interview he did with Famous TV. ESPN has a transcript of Melendez's statements: "I don't feel like I shouldn't be in this position, I'm not crying about my position but I think I've done more than Ben Henderson," told Fighting Famous TV. "You know, these guys were on The Ultimate Fighter - I was already fighting in PRIDE and ranked top three in the world but some people just don't understand that. "I'm not trying to be a cry baby again, but I just know my history and I've been there. I've already hit these bumps in the road and come back. Some of these guys haven't hit that bump in the road where they have to reinvent themselves and I've already hit that and they're still going to hit that." This is the ultimate problem with Melendez in Strikeforce. Yes, he's a professional, but when a man feels that he isn't getting the opportunities that he deserves, it can lead to complacency through a sense of dissatisfaction. For Melendez, his future is fights with men he has already defeated or men who aren't truly on his level. When you've spent your career establishing that you're one of the best in the world, get to the #2 spot and now are relegated to fighting fringe talents while you watch men you feel haven't "earned it" as much as you get bigger opportunities, it is bound to create some level of animosity. For Melendez, what's the end game here? I'm holding firm to the idea that Zuffa must send some fighters to Strikeforce to challenge Melendez. Yes, it may result in payouts that somewhat outpace the cash generated by the events, but that's what it takes to build up a promotion and fighters. There's a lot of talk that a UFC fighter may see a temporary move to Strikeforce as some sort of horrible demotion, but it's an opportunity to fight the number two lightweight on the planet. For a man like Kenny Florian, unlikely to ever get another shot at a UFC title, that may be something tempting as a mark on his resume. A title run (yes, a secondary title) and the marquee win in his career. Or even a Sean Sherk, unlikely to ever get to the top of the UFC heap at this point in his caeer but a fully legitimate test for Melendez. An option like these is something that has to happen for the good of Melendez and Strikeforce as a whole. SBN coverage of Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal

This video of Ben Henderson sparring with The Korean Zombie will be the coolest thing you will see today

Prior to attending this week's press conference for UFC in Japan, Ben Henderson was in Korea visiting a few family members and getting some work in at Korean Top Team with their residential zombie. Korea's MFight decided to video tape the entire ordeal, and now we have this nifty video to grace your orbital sockets. Just further proof that technology dominates any gift Prometheus could ever give humanity. Eventually, technology will replace religion and Ben Henderson will be giving a shout out to Tony Jimenez instead of Jesus Christ. If that scenario plays out, you could spend your Sunday mornings playing Xbox 360 and nibbling on hot pockets instead of going to church and munching on the body of Christ as represented by a flavorless cracker. To praise God would be the equivalent of obtaining every achievement award in a game. Now check out this video of Ben Henderson and The Korean Zombie sparring and be transfixed in awe. [Source]

Gray Maynard rooting for Frankie Edgar at UFC 144

For some reason people tend to think in terms of trilogies when it comes to a series of events. The same is true in Mixed Martial Arts where three-fight series are fairly common if need for a “rubber match” comes into play after the competitors’  first two encounters. However, as far as UFC lightweight Gray Maynard is concerned, he’s looking to meet Frankie Edgar for a fourth time to truly break their 1-1-1 tie, and, after the quality involved in their highly competitive 2011 offerings, it’s not hard to understand why. As such, Maynard is hoping Edgar retains his title this February when he faces Ben Henderson in the main event at UFC 144 and even beyond if necessary in order to set up a fitting finale to their fantastic run of rumbles. “Hopefully he holds on to the belt, because there’s got to be a part four, I think, to make it a true ‘trilogy’. Now he has one and I do too, so that’s a draw. So, we gotta do it again,” said Maynard in a conversation with Tatame. “Hopefully, he holds on the belt and I can work back up there.” As far as what might be next up for the 32-year old Ultimate Fighter alumnus, Maynard was unsure with many of the division’s top names already booked for upcoming fights. “Well, that’s a lot of stuff up in the air. I know Melvin Guillard got (put) up against Jim Miller. I know Donald Cerrone is going to go up against Nate Diaz, so there’s a lot of interesting stuff that you kinda have to wait to see what happens.” Maynard Confident He Can Beat Any Opponent Maynard holds an overall record of 10-1-1 with the only flaws involving Edgar (as well as one of the victories). In addition to Edgar, “The Bully” also holds past wins over top 155ers like Miller, Diaz, Dennis Siver, Roger Huerta, and Kenny Florian. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC Tweet

Frankie Edgar admits he has his work cut out for him against Ben Henderson

As 2011 began Ben Henderson was little more than a lightweight trying to secure his place on the Zuffa roster after losing his final fight in WEC before the organization was absorbed by the UFC. Now, eleven months filled with “Bendo” taking out top contenders and seeing other 155ers above him on the contendership ladder fall have led to February 26, 2012 where the 28-year old will face divisional champion Frankie Edgar in headlining action at UFC 144. The 15-2 Henderson’s meteoric rise from relative obscurity to legitimate title threat hasn’t been lost on Edgar who understands what type of challenge he’s in for rather than sees his scheduled opponent as being an inferior competitor who lucked his way into a go at gold. Edgar shined some light on his opinion of Henderson in a press conference related to UFC 144 where the 14-1-1 champ showed nothing but respect for his adversary. “He’s been on a tear since he came over from the WEC. He’s beat all the top contenders, so he’s more deserving of a title shot. He’s real exciting,” Edgar explained while alluding to Henderson’s wins over Jim Miller and Clay Guida, both of whom were in line for an opportunity to fight for the belt had they beaten Henderson. Based on those performances, as well as some intangibles, Edgar put it plainly as far as what he expects to see in the ring at UFC 144. “He’s young and hungry, so I know I‘ve got my hands full.” Lightweight Champion Edgar Excited to Fight in Japan Edgar vs. Henderson is only one of the many marvelous match-ups set for Japan with others including Quinton Jackson vs. Ryan Bader, Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon, and Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Jake Shields. Frankie Edgar expects to have "his hands full" when he meets Ben Henderson in Japan

Frankie Edgar's reign at the top of the 155-pound division has been a tough one, and according to him, he's not expecting things to get any easier in Japan. That's because he'll find himself staring across the octagon at former WEC Champion Ben Henderson. Since debuting with the UFC in April, Henderson has derailed the title hopes of three straight top contenders, knocking off Mark Bocek, Jim Miller, and, most recently, Clay Guida to earn a crack at Edgar's Lightweight strap. Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon latest fight scheduled for UFC’s return to Japan

There appeared to be little doubt lightweights Anthony Pettis and Joe Lauzon were destined to collide in early 2012 after both fighters openly, albeit respectfully, requested they be matched up as a means of propelling one into title-hunt based on successful showings in recent performances. Possible became probable Tuesday night when the UFC announced both sides had officially agreed to the encounter. However, rather than face off over Super Bowl Weekend as expected, Lauzon and Pettis will join headlining peers Frankie Edgar and Ben Henderson in Japan on February 26 for UFC 144. Lauzon is on the heels of one of his biggest wins to date, submitting the streaking Melvin Guillard less than a minute into their melee at UFC 136 to pick up his sixth straight event-specific bonus. The 27-year old self-labeled “computer nerd” has finished all twenty-one of the opponents he’s beaten, an extraordinary feat considering some of triumphs including victories over Mike Brown and Jeremy Stephens. Lauzon Not One to Be Bullied or Intimidated The latter is an adversary the 14-2 Pettis knows well, having fought Stephens last month on the same card where Lauzon picked up his victory over Guillard. Pettis came away with a Split Decision win after opting to play it somewhat safe in comparison to a few of his previous pairings including a superb scrap with Henderson where he landed his infamous “Showtime Kick”. In addition to Edgar’s title-defense against “Bendo”, UFC 144 is also scheduled to feature Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Jake Shields and Yushin Okami vs. Tim Boetsch. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC Tweet

Clay Guida’s clash with Ben Henderson earns “Fight of the Night” distinction

Occasionally MMA match-ups look great on paper but don’t play out as perfectly as they should. Last night’s battle between Ben Henderson and Clay Guida was not among that group, a lightweight rumble reading like a masterpiece in the making that fully delivered on fans’ high expectations. Guida and Henderson, who went at it full speed for fifteen minutes, were both awarded for their efforts with $65,000 each and “Fight of the Night” honors. Henderson will now move on to a title-shot in February after picking up the decision win while Guida will head back to the drawing board in hopes of returning to the contendership picture. Full UFC on FOX 1 Results On the subject of divisional gold, newly-crowned heavyweight king Junior dos Santos received an extra layer of icing an already sweet cake when his strike-based stoppage of formerly undefeated champion Cain Velasquez was named “Knockout of the Night”, yet another chapter in the fairy tale story of what “Cigano” has accomplished since coming from abject poverty. Finally, “Submission of the Night” and the attached cash went to Ricardo Lamas who tapped out Cub Swanson with an Arm-Triangle Choke in the second round of a hotly-contested affair. The win was the second for Lamas in the UFC after a solid run in WEC highlighted by wins over Dave Jansen and Bart Palaszewski. PHOTO CREDIT – UFC Tweet

Junior dos Santos wins Knockout of the Night along with UFC title

A historic night was capped off by a “Knockout of the Night” performance by NEW champion Junior dos Santos who stopped Cain Velasquez in the opening round of their UFC on FOX headliner around a minute into their bout. The loss was the first of Velasquez’s career and marked the ninth straight victory for the humble Brazilian. JDS won $65,000 for the award. Surprising few, “Fight of the Night” and the money were awarded to Ben Henderson and Clay Guida after an expectedly epic encounter. The opening round featured both lightweights getting rocked with Henderson edging “The Carpenter” out with a closer-than-scored Unanimous Decision victory. UFC on Fox Results: Ben Henderson Earns Shot At Frankie Edgar In Japan

Yesterday at the UFC on Fox weigh ins Joe Rogan announced that the winner of Clay Guida and Ben Henderson would be the number one contender for Frankie Edgar's lightweight belt. With the fight of the year candidate in the books and Henderson as the victor, the fight was made official at the post fight press conference. It was rumored that the next Frankie Edgar fight would be at Zuffa's first attempt to break into the Japanese market in January. Dana White confirmed this rumor tonight.  The Guida/Henderson fight did not disappoint tonight, going all three rounds to a Unanimous decision. It was the kind of fight that has fans begging for two more rounds. It was the kind of fight that had fans questioning why the UFC decided not to air it on television. Henderson was the aggressor the whole time and walked away as the new challenger. It was almost a year ago that he lost his shot at the title when Anthony Pettis upset him at WEC 53. What difference a year makes. Pettis is fighting on prelims and Ben Henderson is getting a title shot.  SBN coverage of UFC on Fox 1: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos

UFC champ Frankie Edgar faces Ben Henderson at Feburary's UFC Japan event

ANAHEIM, Calif. - As MMAjunkie.com first reported, UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar will defend his belt and Japan. UFC Japan: Ben Henderson vs Frankie Edgar title fight official for Feb. 25

UFC on FOX: "Velasquez vs. Dos Santos," which emanated from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, is officially in the books. So too, is the hunt for a new lightweight title contender. That's because Ben Henderson staked his claim as division number one contender with a three round unanimous decision win over Clay Guida on the preliminary portion of the promotion's network television debut. UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, during the UFC on FOX post-fight wrap-up show on Fuel TV, confirmed that "Smooth" will fight reigning champion Frankie Edgar when the UFC returns to Japan at the Saitama Super Arena on Feb. 25, 2012. Henderson (15-2) sawed his way through "The Carpenter" to win his third straight win since transitioning to the UFC and while they've all been won on the judge's scorecards, his performances have been impressive. They've also been against some of the best lightweights in the division. "Bendo" will need every ounce of that momentum to dethrone Edgar (14-1-1), who's fresh off a technical knockout win over 155-pound "Bully" Gray Maynard back at UFC 136. And if Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez is victorious over Jorge Masvidal in December, expect him to be waiting in the wings for the winner of of this upcoming match-up. How about it Maniacs, early predictions for this 155-pound title fight? Can Henderson find "The Answer" to beating Edgar and reclaim the lightweight belt -- something he held back in the WEC? Opinions, please. For complete UFC on FOX results and play-by-play click here.

UFC on FOX's Clay Guida: 'I'm more determined' and more experienced

ROSEMEAD, Calif. - Has Clay Guida fought better competition than Ben Henderson? The question, according to Guida, is how could he not? He's literally fought almost all of the lightweight division, save for two-time title challenger Gray Maynard and, of course, champ Frankie Edgar. That's why Guida is pretty confident he's got the best argument for a title shot if he beats Ben Henderson on Saturday at UFC on FOX.

Clay Guida: I've fought numerous opponents better than Ben Henderson

Confident "Carpenter" is confident. UFC lightweight tornado Clay Guida is feeling pretty good about his chances against Ben Henderson when they throw down on the preliminary card of UFC on FOX tomorrow (Nov. 12, 2011) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The winner is expected to challenge Frankie Edgar for "The Answer's" lightweight title in early 2012. Henderson recently derailed the Jim Miller hype train and spoiled his title plans by dominating him at UFC on Versus 5 to secure a lopsided unanimous decision victory. Guida was not impressed. That's because he's already fought "numerous opponents" that are better than "Bendo," according to comments he made during this week's UFC on FOX pre-fight press conference (via USA Today): "I believe I've fought numerous opponents that are better. I believe Nate Diaz is better on the ground. I believe (Takanori) Gomi is a more well-rounded fighter; maybe I caught him on the end of his career. I believe we've got an up-and-comer in Rafael Dos Anjos, who's starting to surprise people; (he's) got great stand-up, great grappling (with) his ground game. We've seen his knockout power now. We'll see how he does against Gleison Tibau. I can't go over every name I've fought. I think I've got 50 fights; I'll be sitting here until Saturday morning. But I know that I have the confidence and the experience to take him down." Guida recently played spoilsport to Anthony Pettis, who had actually earned himself a chance at the lightweight championship, but chose to fight in lieu of waiting around. Unfortunately for "Showtime," that meant a war against the energetic caveman and "The Carpenter" used his superior wrestling to send him to the back of the line, catapulting himself to the front of it in the process. He's ripped off four wins in a row and if he makes it five at the expense of Henderson, it will become increasingly more difficult to justify not giving him a title shot. Especially with Melvin Guillard no longer "in the mix." Do we wait for the winner of Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal before committing to anything? Or is it pointless to even have this conversation because Henderson will win? Thoughts?

UFC on FOX: Clay Guida's wrestling against Ben Henderson is going to be exciting (Video)

"We're always out there to put a show on. Have fun first, put a show on for the fans and win. But, if you look at the champions in five out out of the seven weight classes, five of them are wrestlers or have wrestling backgrounds. And I don't think there is too much hate for Cain Velasquez. It didn't sound like it today. Every one loves him, loves St. Pierre. Dominick Cruz, Jon Jones. You know what I mean? Wrestling wins championships. It's about buying into the system. What got these guys here? Wrestling…. Wrestlers can still be exciting. And you're going to see it on Saturday night between me and Ben Henderson, two of the most exciting fighters out there." -- "Sticky" Clay Guida defends his approach to winning fights inside the Octagon, which is rooted in relentless takedowns and constant pressure. He rarely gives his opponents a moment to breath; in fact, his aggressive wrestling and top control wears down opponents and pushes them to the brink of utter exhaustion. It's not always the prettiest strategy to watch, however, as "The Carpenter" suggests, it has proven effective. Guida is currently on a four-fight win streak, during which time he has stopped three opponents -- Shannon Gugerty, Rafael dos Anjos and Takanori Gomi -- via submission. In his most recent win over former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, Guida completely schooled "Showtime" on the ground to earn a spot in a number one division contender eliminator bout against Ben Henderson at UFC on FOX 1 this weekend. Will Guida's wrestling lead him to division champion Frankie Edgar's front doorstep when the dust settles? Perhaps more important, will it be exciting to watch?

UFC on FOX: Clay Guida wants the best Ben Henderson on Nov. 12

Now that Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard finally settled their differences at UFC 136 this past Oct. 8 in Houston, the lightweight logjam is no more.  Not only that, but Melvin Guillard got rocked and submitted, dropping him out of contention for the time being. With the list of contenders dwindling and top 155-pound fighters falling away, that leaves a few very important match-ups in the near future. Perhaps no one being more important than the clash between Clay Guida and Ben Henderson at UFC on FOX 1 on Nov. 12 in Anaheim, California. And seeing as the stakes are so high, "The Carpenter" says he wants the best "Bendo" possible: "Ben Henderson is the next guy in front of me that's keeping me from my title shot. Very well spoken opponent, very humble young man and just a great competitor, so I'm really looking forward to the challenge. We always rise to the top for the toughest occasions. This is going to be my most important fight, my toughest fight. I know Ben is going to be on his top conditioning and his best camp, so that's all we're looking for. ... We want to fight the best conditioned, best camp he's had and that's going to tell the tale of maybe who's next in line." Henderson's conditioning is likely the last thing Guida will have to worry about. In fact, considering the reputation of both competitors, this may very well go down as the most frenetic, fast-paced bout in UFC history. Wouldn't have it any other way. Hear more from Guida in the full entry, including the possibility of his finally fighting for the lightweight title after being in the game for so long.

Time for another UFC Lightweight Title hunt discussion?

Champion: Frankie Edgar Top Contenders (1 fight or less away from title shot): Gilbert Melendez, current Strikeforce LW Champion and scheduled to fight Jorge Masdival in December but the talk is that he will be signing with the UFC instead. Says he wants the UFC belt and many speculate he will be given an immediate title shot. Ben Henderson, coming off a very impressive win over Jim Miller in August, set to fight Clay Guida next month on Fox, a fight that many speculate will decide the number one contender. Clay Guida won a decision over Anthony Pettis in June and is on a four-fight win streak including a Submission of the Night win over PRIDE legend Takanori Gomi. He will face Ben Henderson on Fox Nov. 12. On the Brink (approx. 2 fights away from title shot, listed in no particular order): Gray Maynard may not get another shot against Frankie Edgar in the near future, but he still presents a massive hurdle for anyone looking to rise to the top in this stacked division. Joe Lauzon has catapulted himself into upper echelons of the LW rankings with his dominant upset victory over former title prospect Melvin Guillard. Jim Miller will be looking for another path toward the title conversation after a loss to Ben Henderson halted his momentum in August. Nate Diaz has returned to the 155-lb division with an outstanding submission win over Takanori Gomi, and showed superb boxing and BJJ in that fight. Dennis Siver, riding a four-fight win streak including solid wins over George Sotiropoulous and Matt Wiman, will have an interesting bout against fellow up-and-comer Donald Cerrone (who is replacing Sam Stout) at UFC 137. Others: Sam Stout, Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, Melvin Guillard, Gleison Tibau, Rafael Dos Anjos. Lots of tough dudes on their way up here... Who do you place at the top of your rankings and what matchups do you make to line up the next few contenders? submitted by lumbugg [link] [15 comments]

UFC Quick Quote: Get people down, hold them down and you win fights

"I'm happy that I got the victory but for me it was like a mental loss because I know I can perform much better than that. I really wanted to focus on my wrestling and my top game against Jeremy and show everyone that I am well-rounded and that I do have wrestling. I think I did that, but I also think I could have done better. When you go to the UFC it's not all about 'showtime' kicking or knocking everybody out. Get people down, hold them down and you win fights." An interesting observation (via UFC.com) from former WEC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis, who was immortalized for his "Showtime" kick against Ben Henderson prior to joining the ranks of ZUFFA. When the brands eventually did merge, Pettis found his flashy offense stymied by the frenetic pace and suffocating mat work from Clay Guida -- yet employed a similar tactic against Jeremy Stephens at UFC 136 last night (Oct. 8) in Houston, Texas. Has wrestling's "get them down, hold them down and win" mentality corrupted the dynamic striker? Or was this a specific gameplan designed to get the "W" and preserve his standing within the promotion's very crowded 155-pound division? Thoughts?

Gilbert Melendez Expected to Join UFC’s Ranks

Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez is reportedly closer to entering the UFC’s stacked lightweight division, according to UFC President Dana White. “We do want to bring Gilbert Melendez over and we’re looking at it right now… We’re going to bring Melendez over ASAP. We’re looking to bring him over now,” White told MMAWeekly. “Getting an immediate title shot is) a possibility. The thing is, that division is so stacked. And usually timing has a lot to do with (who gets the next shot).” Bringing Melendez over to the UFC’s ranks, where he’ll join teammates Jake Shields and Nick and Nate Diaz, seems to make the most sense. Since a decision loss to Josh Thomson in 2008 — which Melendez avenged one year later — the San Francisco native has been on a five-fight win streak. Melendez is one of the top-ranked lightweights, and is the best lightweight currently outside the UFC’s ranks. Matchups between Melendez and Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard, Clay Guida, Ben Henderson, and Melvin Guillard all seem appealing — along with a handful of other current UFC lightweights.
